The Ground Rules (read 1st)

Hi and welcome to Sidhe Shells.

Before you get started, I need to point out a few ground rules.

1) This is not going to be a vanilla game of D&D. Forget any assumptions you might have about setting, monsters and NPC's; Some of them may be correct, but many will not. It is not set in Greyhawk, the Forgotten Realms or any other published D&D setting, though it may bear some resemblance to some of them. Likewise, while I have also borrowed some themes, ideas and names from other fantasy intellectual properties, forget your assumptions; this is an original setting and while similarities exist, most of them are surface at best.

1a) Knowledge, lore and (most of all) learning from your experiences in the game will stand you in good stead; they will be your primary weapons! You will know what your character knows; I'll see to that, but I encourage you to take notes, read between the lines and generally use your head. Do not expect a hack'n'slash or pure adventure style game.

1b) Be sure to read any and all (Lore) subtitled threads, including (but not limited to);
- (Common Lore) : Things that most people know.
- (Cultural Lore) : Things most members of your Race or Background know, but those outside it won't.
- (Specialised Lore) : Things known only to scholars or people with extensive experience in a field.

Reading all the background materials presented in (Lore) threads is not mandatory, only advisory, but be warned; you may find information there that could save your characters life!

2) Spelling, punctuation and grammar. Please get them right or as near to correct as possible. If you're in doubt such as, for instance, if English is not your first language then please use a word processor to check and correct your work; they're not perfect, but it's better than the alternative! It just bugs me having to work out the discrepancies between "there", "their" and "they're", for example.

I reserve the right to get pedantic and correct posts that bug me.

3) Be nice. Abide by the RPoL rules of use, of course, but please keep it friendly. Anyone that gets out of line or who I suspect is being a douche-bag will get booted and replaced. I will not tolerate uncivilised behaviour (from players...feel free to be uncivilised in-character, within reason, of course!).

3a) If you have any concerns about another player, a course of action you think might be close to the line, or anything else, please don't hesitate to send me a PM to discuss it.

3b) This game is rated Mature. Please refamiliarise yourself with what that means before submitting an RTJ.

4) Please abide by the following posting conventions:

- Third person, past tense. e.g.
Ash:
Ash walked across the street and clouted the fool using first person present tense. "Get it right, idiot" he said scathingly.

- Pick a colour for your speech text and stick to it. I will post a table in Player Resources with colours that have been taken; please don't duplicate.

- Orange is reserved for out of character text; all dice rolls, OOC queries or statements of action.
- Red is reserved for GM notifications.
- Green and Aqua are both reserved for NPCs.
(see The Rules of Engagement)

- Italicize your characters thoughts in your chosen speech colour.

- No novels. I like a good read, but if your post is hitting its fourth paragraph, it might be time to stop for breath. You can always continue your soliloquay after others have had a chance to respond or interrupt. I reserve the right, as GM, to ignore this convention!

5) Post Rate: Please try to post at least every other day or so (3-4 times a week is ideal, more is fine, less is, er, less than ideal). I won't be strict about this because I appreciate that playing PbP often means waiting for another player and sometimes it's hard not to get carried away with a conversation before waiting for others, but if you haven't posted in-character for three days, at least give a little wave in the OOC thread Whispers in the Wind to let us know you're still alive!

5a) Any player that hasn't posted in more than a week, without prior notice, will be NPC'd for a further week and then dropped from the game. In combat, please please please keep things moving; a post a day or more would be great.

6) As mentioned above, this game is not vanilla D&D. As such, we will be using some house rules to fit the setting. These changes will be described where relevant, but for a collected list please check the Rules of Engagement thread. I will try to provide hypertext links wherever necessary.

7) Theater of the Mind : I don't have the facility or the time to upload maps for everything, so this game will be played entirely in TotM. If that's a problem, this game isn't for you. I will endeavour to provide as detailed a description of things as possible but if there's any confusion or doubt, as always, please don't hesitate to ask.
