In Search of Something Known

It was a fitting ceremony, none were untouched. The boy had turned into a man, self-assured, positive, in the days that followed their retreat from the inn all those days ago.

"Saved our bacon a few times, he did," Bruknar noted sadly. "Was a wizard with locks, too."

Party actions, please?

In the top room, the dining area, Gildan's search for secret doors proves fruitless. However, in the far left corner, about 15' from the door, he takes note of a medium sized chest. Other than that, everything remains as described when the party first enters.

Without touching the chest, Gildan will do a visual inspection of the chest. Does it have a lock? Could it be broken open?

Kullonar watches this newcomer roam around the room as if he owns the place.
"Not very grateful for saving his life, is he?" murmurs the half-orc to Bruno. "He hasn't even given us his name."

Gildan limps around the room. Spying the chest, he approaches to find it in pretty poor repair. A clasp is rusted through and the wood looks to be dry and brittle. The ranger thinks on that for a moment: why would wood be dry, but the metal clasp be rusted? A riddle, no doubt, one that he ponders as he continues his inspection.

From what he can tell, it appears that the lid can simply be opened.

As Gildan does his expression, there are low murmurs from the others as they process what's happened to Weasel.

External points:

The door to the dining area is closed, but not secured. The door do the lounge is still open - Zan, Kullonar and Bruno recall that there was a door in there as well.

House Rule: Everyone other than Gildan, make an idea roll please: add wisdom and intelligence together, than roll percentile (d100) - if you roll below the sum of your int & wis, you have an idea.

The party's search has yet to yield much of anything at this point, though the fact that there are portals in both chambers might suggest a cunning strategy by the ghast and its followers.

Of course, the chest is still unopened as Gildan looks to the others for confirmation to open it. The time for introductions are near.

OOC: I have two, but still waiting on idea rolls from other party members (excepting Gildan). Wisdom + Intelligence = x where x is below the roll.

ooc2: ugh, algebra...

While his comrades begin checking the rooms Bruno considers Zan's words, "Yes... You make a good observation, my friend.

Pausing he sighs conveying the fatigue he feels, "By the Soul Forger's Hammer I can't recall whether any that we frightened away are still about or we've dealt with them all.

"That means that others may already be laying an ambush for us now that they know we're present."

Myrrick nodded with Zan's assessment, "Clever undead does not bode well, we definitely need to be more aware of our surroundings, I will start to help search for secret doors, I may not find them, but more eyes looking give us a better chance. Cleris, when you are able, can you examine my weapon. I want to make sure the halberd is being used to its fullest potential."

At this point, some information about the tactics used by the ghouls sinks in leaving all of you worried. Myrrick and Zan spend time studying Weasel's corpse. And Gildan looks an awful lot like he wants to open the chest he's currently crouching beside.

Party's move, please.

Gildan steps away from the chest and turns to Zan. There is no awkwardness in his silence. It seems that maybe he simply has no understanding of politeness.

Zan:

"Gildan," he responds, then nods at the chest, "Any of you good with checking traps and all that?"

"Well our lost friend Weasle was our best at finding traps and such, I happen to know a thing or two as well."  Zan will go over and examine the chest.  Doing much of the things that Weasle would normally do.  Taking out his sword he gives the chest a poke with his sword, "Never can be to sure"

Bruno sat quietly on the floor seemingly to meditate holding his shield before him with his hands atop it.

When proper movement began he pulls himself together and stands. He knows that he is of know use when it comes to dealing with any traps on the chest let alone its lock. That said, he knows that a hammer and spike are tools enough to get through most such items, if nothing else.

Still, he also knows that Zan has some skills that are more subtle, so he speaks little as he watches him to what he does.

Zan finds no traps, however he is successful identifying and picking the lock mechanism that's built into the chest.

Closing his eyes and offering a quick prayer to fortune, he pops the lock. Nothing happens (happily) so he continues forward and opens the chest. As if expecting any number of calamities, his face is turned from the front of the chest. When nothing happens, he finds several vials filled with liquid, a scroll tube and a small velvet bag.

Zan let out an audible sigh, "Always seemed much easier to me when I was helping Weasle". He said down beside the chest and started removing the items in the chest and handing them to the others.
