Zan is now -8 HP
Kullonar smacks a skeleton, it disintegrates, but he takes 2 points damage in the process.
Uthecar smacks another skeleton into the next intermission. In return he takes 5pts dmg.

Re: Chapter 3: The Valley of Sleeping Jarls

Bruno grabs his shield as he stands back up and grabbing a vial of Holy Water from a bag of them slung acrossed his back chucks it into the crowd of skeletons.

OOC:
Throwing Holy Water:

19:55, Today: Bruno Rhunthane rolled 10 using 1d20+1 ((9))

If this roll actually hits, I do not know what damage Holy Water would do to these undead and I'm also not sure how to determine what the vial's AOE is.

Re: Chapter 3: The Valley of Sleeping Jarls

Area of effect is 1' diameter. Damage given is 2hp for a splash or 2d4 for a direct hit.

I'm going to say that you splashed the nearest skeleton and it disintegrated. Down to 20 skeletons and that's your attack. Skeletons number 20 at this point, 7 zombies, 1 monster zombie.

Re: Chapter 3: The Valley of Sleeping Jarls

OOC: I know for a fact that you guys had healing potions - I set that up when you guys set sail. I was banking on that when you went into this tomb. So, by divine right of kings, I am going to say that each of you still standing have a healing potion that you've forgotten about in your pack. Furthermore, the potion is so effective that it gives you 10 HP back.

There's a cost to it. I think I've been a generous and fair DM. I'm going to play it straight now and what happens, happens.

Uthecar continues his attacking noticing his comrades are falling.

16:10, Today: Uthecar Hornskin II rolled 7 to hit with the perfect time for a natural 1 roll.

So is there enough time to drink this potion or is it assumed it was already consumed?  I'm seeing Uthecar surrounded by undead and stopping to drink something isn't something he'd do.

Re: Chapter 3: The Valley of Sleeping Jarls

The cleric of Moradin and former soldier of the ArchBaron's Dwarven Heavies is feeling the thrusts and bites he has received from the skeletons and zombies they stumbled upon. He is woozy and realizes that he has never been quite this hurt in all of his years. Still, he hears his his mother, The Sergeant's, voice in his head, If you know you're hurt, you're still alive, so fight until you can either get to a medic or you can't feel the pain any more!

His resolve stiffened, he thrusts his hand back into his satchel to grab another vial over holy water thinking, If we can get rid of these cursed things before us we can finally get to Zan, withdraw from this sit...

As he is doing so three of the skeletons before him thrust their spears, one slipping under  the Elemental Shield of Moradin and bruising his left side, one coming from the other side through the opening between the shield and the arm reaching into the satchel gouging his right side, and the third coming over the shield penetrating the slight space between his helm and neck.

And without completing the thought Bruno Rhunthane falls.

OOC: Bruno is now at -5.

I went back and confirmed (I really need to get a fulltime job) that back in June in message #65 of OOC2: Where the Fallen Jarls Sleep there was a discussion of the Healing Potions we had purchased or somehow gained before setting out and I suggested that...

Uthecar, Zan, Gliden, and Myrrick should each take one.

The rest of us can heal ourselves, if necessary.

There's no other pick up or discussion beyond that. Indeed, I can't recall or find here where the potions came from, etc.

It also occurs to me that the reason I haven't yet suggested a strategic withdrawal is that we've still got the skeletons that brought me down on us. I keep forgetting that in AD&D there is no such thing as Attacks of Opportunity and that since the enemy happens to have first Initiative we might have withdrawn at any point up to now. (It's almost as if I was thinking about this last week, which is funny, because I was and I still didn't think it through completely.)

SO, here's to being slightly younger and even more slightly dummer!

Re: Chapter 3: The Valley of Sleeping Jarls

Gildan will provide cover for the retreat, loosing two arrows as he retreats.

OOC:
15:19, Today: Gildan Stalker rolled 5 using 1d6+4.  Damage 2.
15:19, Today: Gildan Stalker rolled 7 using 1d6+4.  Damage 1.
15:19, Today: Gildan Stalker rolled 26 using 1d20+7.  Bow attack 2.
15:19, Today: Gildan Stalker rolled 24 using 1d20+7.  Bow attack 1.
I assume attacking means I can't help drag Bruno. I'll focus my attacks on whatever is closest to Bruno and Ulrich, which will hopefully give them a few seconds.

Re: Chapter 3: The Valley of Sleeping Jarls

Seeing the situation and that it's going to take a monumental effort to save everyone Uthecar plows into the skeletons and zombie in total disregard for his own safety, or maybe just totally believing in his ability to vanquish the undead.

He is looking to create a circle of annihilation to allow those that can still stand a chance to grab the fallen and withdraw.

"SAVE THE FALLEN," he bellows as he throws himself upon the enemy.

08:41, Today: Uthecar Hornskin II rolled 19 and 14 to hit and 21 and 22hp of damage.  That's the last berserk for the day I believe.

Re: Chapter 3: The Valley of Sleeping Jarls

I don't think so, Ulrich? I'll give it to you.

At this point Zan is dead.
Bruno is bleeding out, unconscious, but not dead yet.
Myrrick is in similar but better straits at 0 HP.

Gildan, Kullonar, Uthecar, Ulgrim are what's left of the party.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tell me what you want to do, fellas. I've got three players dead or dying. Four critically wounded, but having found a stash of healing potions, they can drag fallen comrades out. Only Zan is completely dead.

I suspect a few more of you will fall if you continue to fight. Again, I point out that there might be a bit of healing to be had with Nimea, at least enough to add to the potions.

Re: Chapter 3: The Valley of Sleeping Jarls

Despite massive damage brought to legion of undead, the party finds itself outnumbered. Zan is dead, his spirit gone to rest in the realm of Ehlonna. Bruno, almost fled to Moradin's realm, has been awakened by the lost potions of healing and Ulrich's gentle touch. Gildan and Kullonar take hold of Myrrick's arms and drag him toward the light outside Ingolf's tomb. Still inside the tomb, Uthecar is valiant, destroying 5 skeletons and two zombies. Unfortunately, he finally succumbs to the deaders and falls.

A bright light shines upon his sacrifice. An avatar of Moradin carries the brave warrior to his resting place where he finds his mother and father and all his kin waiting for him. His toils are behind him now.

Re: Chapter 3: The Valley of Sleeping Jarls

The party finds itself gravitating toward Nimae's hill. Once within, she greets you with a bit of surprise. Then, she notes two who are missing. Seeing that those who survived are not without many wounds, she takes charge: Each person gets a cure moderate wound for maximum healing (16 points each). She hovers over Myrrick and Bruno in particular, adding an additional 8 points as well to both. Then she said, "You are brave, but I have no more healing to give you this day. You may stay here, but I would caution you: They know of my shrine. Better, I think, that you should go back to the keep and rest for a day or two. Then you can return and regain your strength before continuing your quest.

I'm going to take a pause and dole out some XP. We'll get started again in the next day or two.
