Re: Chapter 3: The Valley of Sleeping Jarls

Round ONE

Initiative:  Zombies & Monstrous Zombies (Giant &  Bugbear) 1

Myrrick: 8 flame brand short spear/Gildan 8

Zan: 6 Magic Missile dude/Kullonar 6

Uthecar: 5 Brawn/Axe

Ulrich: 4 Holy/sword

Bruno: 3 Blessings, Short sword

Ulrich, you are outraged at the sight of a great destrier brought low: +1 to hit and damage during this melee.

Attention Dwarves: You get a +1 bonus to hit half-orcs and orcs, Hobgoblins and Goblins. Also, Giants suffer -4 to hit when attacking dwarves.

Uthecar swings into action, the blade of his axe whistling through the air as he moves to meet the oncoming undead.  If possible he'll head towards the giant, the only logical choice for a fighting dwarf.

OOC:  Will it be at -4 to hit Uthecar given he is a dwarf like any other sort of giant?  If so AC will be -3

16:08, Today: Uthecar Hornskin II rolled 5 using 1d6.  Initiative.

16:10, Today: Uthecar Hornskin II rolled 17 to hit and 16hp damage.

Re: Chapter 3: The Valley of Sleeping Jarls

On seeing the giant Bruno's eyes get big, and unusual for him at these times, hungry.

He hears Uthecar's words, though, and knows that at this moment it is best tactically to attempt to Turn and delay these abomination. This is why Wisdom is such an important stat for clerics.

Accordingly he presents the Elemental Shield of Moradin and attempts to Turn the creatures.

OOC:
10:33, Today: Bruno Rhunthane rolled 3 using 1d6+1.  Initiative.

14:06, Today: Bruno Rhunthane rolled 4 using 1d20.  Turn Undead. I suspect I've got a better chance at success than Uthecar, but don't think this roll is sufficient.

I didn't mention this and should have: In lieu of a normal (albeit undead) head, the giant wears a Warhorse's head in it's place:

Ulrich, you are outraged at the sight of a great destrier brought low: +1 to hit and damage during this melee.

Carry on!

Re: Chapter 3: The Valley of Sleeping Jarls

Trying to back away from the skeletons to give himself space to fire, Gildan fires two more shots at the giant zombie, hoping to take it down. He looks badly injured.

OOC: 09:10, Today: Gildan Stalker rolled 6 using 1d6+4.  Damage 2.
09:10, Today: Gildan Stalker rolled 10 using 1d6+4.
09:10, Today: Gildan Stalker rolled 19 using 1d20+7.  Bow attack 2.
09:10, Today: Gildan Stalker rolled 18 using 1d20+7.  Bow attack 1.
09:09, Today: Gildan Stalker rolled 7 using 1d6+2.
These are based on firing while not engaged in melee. If the skellies are still in his face, the attack rolls are 15 and 16, respectively (I think).

Re: Chapter 3: The Valley of Sleeping Jarls

To give you some perspective, you are completely surrounded by a horde of skeletons, Zombies and 2 Monster Zombies. Not that you are counting, but with 13 zombies left & 34 skeletons plus the two baddies, you guys are knee deep in trouble. And that doesn't include the strange scaled critter that zapped Zan.

This is critical mass. You guys gotta pull a rabbit out of the hat.

As I always say, good luck!

As an aside: playing multi class sounds really good, up until the point that you have 6 levels and still can't sling a fireball to get you out of trouble.

I have this argument with another DM that plays on RPol. He seems to thing that having three classes at once checks all the boxes. I think it just slows progression down. Especially in AD&D which is made for specialists.

That's end of my lecture. :)

Re: Chapter 3: The Valley of Sleeping Jarls

Things are slowing down now for the party, you kind of see the ebb and flow. Good news: The giant is down, a splattered mess having taken wounds from Gildan's bow and Uthecar's sword. Ulrich engaged the bugbear boar's head, scored a nifty hit. Myrrick's fire took down another skeleton, though he is more than a bit wobbly. Only one zombie landed a blow against Bruno: 6pts of damage to doughty dwarf. And the bugbear failed to land a hit with it's Bardiche.

There were 3 natty 20s from the undead on their initiative, along with a 19 which scored max damage and only one zombie hit with a fist.

Total updated damage to the party:

Gildan: -15
Myrrick: -13
Zan (<-7 hp)
Kullonar: -16
Uthecar: -17
Ulrich: -15
Bruno: -16

The horde is still there, but they're taking tremendous casualties. You feel like this next round is critically important. If you can weather the storm of skeletons, you might have a shot at survival.

After the giant goes down Uthecar keeps swinging away at whatever foe is unlucky enough to get in front of him.

06:00, Today: Uthecar Hornskin II rolled 13 to hit (AC 5) for 11hp damage.

I've got Uthecar having taken 19hp in total so far after cures which means he's on 16hp left.  He's also using a battle axe rather than a sword Seer, so I'm not sure if that counts as a sword does against skeletons since it is more a slashing-smashing type weapon.

Re: Chapter 3: The Valley of Sleeping Jarls

Realizing that piercing arrows were pointless against skeletons, Gildan drops the bow and pulls out his longsword, attacking the closest and most injured unturned skeleton he sees. His attempt is pathetic, however, and his sword whiffs the air.

OOC: 13:05, Today: Gildan Stalker rolled 8 using 1d20+1.  Sword attack.

Re: Chapter 3: The Valley of Sleeping Jarls

RULES CLARIFICATION: THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!

SKELETONS TAKE HALF DAMAGE ON POINTED WEAPONS SUCH AS SWORDS, SPEARS AND ARROWS. A BATTLE AXE CAN BE USED TO BLUDGEON SKELETONS FOR FULL DAMAGE. FIRE EARNS 2X THE DAMAGE FOR LOW LEVEL UNDEAD LIKE SKELETONS AND ZOMBIES (INCLUDING MONSTER ZOMBIES).

DON'T FORGET THE SPLASH AFFECT OF HOLY WATER AS WELL. YOU CAN HIT MORE THAN ONE.

Specific to skeletons: There's no reason not to attack them normally as they are 1 Hit Die monsters with not a lot of HP. FYI.
