Chapter Four: Lessons Learned

It is a long slog back to Gregor's rest. As the party funnels into the henchman's hidey hole, he notes two are missing and mutters a prayer to Kord for the deliverance of their souls to the Happy Hunting Grounds.

At first he's reticent to say anything, and starts working on a full meal for the survivors. As the somber quiet descends, the food is finished and he goes about ladling a beefy stew into dishes. Once everyone is served, he asks, "What happened, m'lords?"

Chapter Four: Lessons Learned

Once his service to the party is done, Gregor casts the hood of his cloak over his head and quietly prays. Later in the evening, as the party prepares for bed, Gregor asks, "Milords, what's our next step? You are all wounded, some gravely. Shall we hole up here for a few days."

Chapter Four: Lessons Learned

Bruno has been solemn since they escaped the barrow and thankfully accepted Gordo's meal and the comfort of their camp. He gives the lad a rough outline of their discoveries both in terms of the barrows themselves and the information gained from Nimae about Mogens and his return.

After they ate he had out a brush and in a meditative, comfortable manner began to give his beard a much needed cleaning. When Gordo asks about next moves he both nods and shrugs in response to Ulrich's reply, "I would rest here for only this night and then return to avenge our fallen comrades in case the vileness within that barrow is able to regenerate itself over time. Kullonar and I can also create some more holy water tonight."

He looks around fire at each of the party as he continues, "Despite the loss of our dear comrades, we have the advantage of knowledge that we did not previously have... And if our enemy is conscious of us, I suspect he will not expect we would return so quickly."

Everyone's healed: between potions & Nimea's healing you guys are in good shape. My rationale is this: you lost 2 members so there was more healing to go around.

Chapter Four: Lessons Learned

Myrrick thanks Gregor for the food and the prayers for his friends. As well as thanking Nimea for healing them.

When the others begin talking about returning he pauses, “we number two less, one a mighty warrior and one our most skilled trap finder. You want to go right back in the tomb and face the same horde that nearly killed us all, with two less very important pieces? I would venture a guess and say we may need to get back to the stronghold and result and perhaps find a few willing souls of there are any. Before we venture into any more crypts.” He sighs, “I can’t make that decision alone though. And I’m not speaking out of cowardice, but survivalist instinct. We can’t purify the area if we join the undead army, can we?”

Chapter Four: Lessons Learned

As Myrrick speaks Bruno is putting away the brush and he leans forward to reply, "I do not think you are a coward, Ranger! I understand the wisdom in your words.... Though, I do think we bumbled into things today that knowing what we know we would be better prepared to confront even with smaller group. And to Uthecar's point, I do not wish to eventually return and have to face an undead Uthecar and Zan, let alone the revivified bones of those poor souls we have already 'destroyed'.

"I can ask Moradin's guidence on our next moves... The only 'problem' with this blessing is that the answer will only reflect on the time immediately following my query.

"So, for example, if I ask now whether it is wise for us to delay our return to that barrow for, say, three days the response will tell us that it is either to benefit of, or harmful to, the party in the moments directly following the question.

"I could ask this tonight and see what the response is and then come morn when we are ready to move ask again. Each response will reflect the time immediately following the question; however, if there is a change in the Soul Forger's answer it may tell us something about the situation before us and we could then decide whether to go back to the barrow or return to seek additional help.

"If we do this, I would appreciate everyone's assistance in formulating my Augury."

OOC: I'll edit my earlier response to reflect that we don't need a day for actual healing.

The way an Augury works is that the reply only reflects the question for 3 Turns (30 mins.) following the ritual. It's more a tactial (situational?) tool than strategic, I guess. I have failed to use this, mea culpa, because I've only got one use a day and picking that moment is, well, hard to do. That's on me, but now that I'm reminding everyone I have it, please don't hesitate to remind me IC! ;)

The advantage to my use of it is that it's not actually a spell, but a power given to me by Moradin, so I don't have to use a spell slot for it. Kullonar and I could still both take Augury spells (I think I will, because so far the only really useful 2nd level spell is Cure Moderate Wounds) and we should begin using these before we enter each Barrow. It will mean one less CMW for the coming scenes, but give us a better sense of what's forthcoming and whether or not we should even try it to begin with.

(I DO want help coming up with the questions to ask, though, because Bruno's player is sort of lousy at doing this!)

My only other thought here is that I really do think we (well, I know I didn't) think the last battle through very well. Yes, we are down 1, maybe 2, players, but I'd also point out that it seems as if Zan never properly leveled himself, so he was playing at a level or two lower than he should've been. That means that we were not equal to whatever the threat it was to begin with if the Storyteller set the monsters to equal us as a group of six 6th level charaters. Now that we know we're confronting a mob of skeletons in addition to the collection of zombies (that clearly range in power) we may approach things a bit smarter and if those we destroyed aren't going to be recreated overnight their losses may equal ours.

Also, we can drop in on Nimae again and see if we can't fill our waterskins with some of that delicious healing water in addtion to the 5 vials of Holy H2O that Kullonar and I can create this game night (10 total).

Grrr! Keep OOC stuff in the OOC, please.

Kullonar: that was a rule put in place when Gildan came on board. My fear was that if he came in at 3rd level he would have an inordinate advantage. Since we started the Land of Song campaign, I haven't had to reference that rule until now. To be frank, I forgot about it. So thanks for reminding me. I shall now take the rule off the table since everyone is at an appropriate level to think for themselves.

That was a joke, for the record. Ha Ha.

Late afternoon turned to eventide. Gregors made a small march around the sanctuary: when he returned, he said, "Milords, I saw some movement off in the distance as dusk fell. They weren't coming our way, but it may behoove us to couch our flames and keep double watch. The night is their time.

"Well spotted, Gregors. That movement is quite odd, isn't it? Have you noted anything like previously in the days we've been here?"

Turning to the group, "Well, so my original idea was to try an Augury tonight and then one on the morrow when we're ready to move to determine which way to go.

"What say you? What question would you have me ask now? Something like...

"Will we be at a disadvantage if we return NOW to the barrow wherein our friends were slain earlier today?"

Bruno pauses, "After all, we are healed and have rested... There is no reason if it is to our advantage that we could not return now, is there?"

Or ask that question tomorow and right now ask: "Does the movement Gregors noted in the valley increase the chances for our success if we return to the barrow in which our friends were slain earlier today?"

Bruno shrugs in response to Ulrich, "Right, okay, does anybody else have a suggestion?"

He looks around the party and replies to Myrrick, "Yes. Good point. But, this is why I was thinking of asking the question to begin with. You see, we are working on supposition here. Just because there is more movement does not mean that there is more power necessarily... Whatever the case, I still have an Augury I may use tonight, so should we not try? Perhaps you have another suggestion of what I might ask this night?"

Pausing he takes a sip of water, For tomorrow morning's question we might actually go into the valley and ask it at the door of the barrow. If we do not like the answer turn around and head back to the Jarl for help. I suggest this, because we do only have a short time in which the question's answer will be relevant.

"So, the second question could then be:

"If we reenter this barrow now will we find the power of the enemies within to be greater than it was yesterday?"

Bruno pauses and smiles holding up his hands, "I jest! I think I do understand what you are really saying and, I don't know how to ask that in single question that fits the parameters of this spell.

"Right. I think I have dithered enough over this and I thank you each for your suggestions. Perhpas the more we do this the better I shall become at formulating these queries and they will become more useful to us."

Grabbing his shield from where it rests behind him he pulls it around so that the runes set into it are facing him and takes a deep breath. With his right fist he begins to pound his breast plate rythmically, as if it were a hammer pounding metal in a forge. As he does so he chants in Dwarven and his eyes seem to lose focus until several minutes pass and he stops pounding and chanting and his eyes re-focus and his baritone voice speaks, "Soul Forger, I beg your patience and ask you to answer my question and bless me with Foresight for the troubles my comrades and I confront:

"Are the enemies we battled earlier this day and who felled your noble warrior Uthecar Hornskin, second of that noble name, regenerating their power right now, so that they will be as powerful tomorrow as they were today?"

OOC: I'll let you roll for me, Seer, because I'm uncertain if there are any additional modifiers beyond the +4% for my level. I only mention Uthecar, because he was a worshipper and I'm uncertain of Zan's status.

Nimae taps her index finger to her lips in a thoughtful pose for a moment before nodding.

"Yes, I do believe so. I'll be right back."

She descends into the mound as the party keeps watch. She's gone no more than five minutes or so, then comes out with a crystal decanter and a small box filled with empty crystal vials.

There seems a divine light emanating from her that you did not notice before. Her tongue sticks out as she pours water from the decanter into each vial. It takes about ten minutes: "I do not wish to spill," she remarked as she concentrates on her task. Finally, she passes the box to you: there are 16 vials to go along with any the party might still have on hand.

"Have a care with the vials. They are sturdy enough if care is taken, but are meant to shatter easily. Now, the Lady's blessings be upon you," she said. "Go and smite thy enemies with righteous wrath."

Re: Chapter Four: Lessons Learned

The party forms two columns, three in a row. Led by Bruno and Ulrich, you head into the crypt, bypassing previous encounters until you get to the great circular chambers where the undead are. From your vantage, there still seems to be a lot of skeletons and zombies around. Where the bugbear with the boars head is not in sight from you where you stand. Non of the deaders are moving.

ooc: normally I'd say roll initiative, but since their not moving, perhaps you would like to try sneak up on them? If not, roll initiative.

Re: Chapter Four: Lessons Learned

Yes, I can't recall whether there were 6 left or 8. I'm gonna split it down middle: 7 zombies left. The bugbear's still hanging around as well.

As for the skeletons, they flee as quickly as they may, most making their way toward entrance to the crypt, some going deeper. I'll say 8 fled deeper, 20 headed toward the exit.

Myrrick destroys a zombie, the smell of burnt flesh surrounding every one. As for Gregors, he shows his use as a spearman: Another zombie goes down.

The zombie monster attacks Myrrick who takes 2 points of damage.

Five zombies have arrived, each wading into the troop of adventurers. Only one hit, but that was max damage: 8 points of damage to Kullonar!

The round is up: your initiative.

Ulrich leads the way, Gildan following, everyone else in tow. As you approach the entryway, you see no actual door, merely a stone walkthrough with a rune of the letter 'I' on the lintel that opens into a large chamber.

Bruno holds up his lantern; the light tapers off so that you cannot see the far side of this chamber. What you do see on the near side where you stand just inside are ruined tapestries and some diaphanous shears that hang from the wall. As you move further into the room, the shears are disturbed and move in a ghostly way.

Party Actions, please.

Ulrich, because 'U' is such a strange first letter name to me and there was already one 'U' name in the game when you joined, you will always be 'Uthecar' to me in the same way that you were when 'Uthecar' was still with us!

(For each time I did not call one of you by the other's name I caught myself and fixed the post before I hit send, which I clearly didn't do this time -- I guess this make me Letterist or... Vowelist or something.)

That said, mea culpa, I shall endevor to do better in the future!

Round 1

Ulrich raises his torch. The light is pale and wan within the stygian chamber. Vision is at half. What you can see is the stuff of nightmares. Rotting tapestries come into greater clarity, depicting profane & loathsome rites. Atop a stout, stone platform is a hideous throne of bone and sinew. There a pale figure awaits bedecked in jewels & rings, her eyes glowing like azure gems. Slowly she stands and calls forth her servants.

Game on: roll your actions (attack, turn).

As always, good luck!

Bruno is last on initiative: he has NOT cast bless yet.

The only thing you see right now is the zombie creature moving toward you. You do notice a substantial difference between the Zombies you've already faced and this particular one. It is very quick and moves forward to attack Gildan who's just scored two hits on the thing.

Re: Chapter Four: Lessons Learned

After taking two arrows, the Zombie-ish creature leaps forward to attack Gildan. The Archer takes 5 points of damage in return.

Ulrich calls down the might Pelor, but there is no response.

Gregors bravely faces the Zombie foe, but finds her to be quicker than he expected.

Myrrick scores a slice along her flank for 5 pts damage.

Suddenly, the Zombie is joined by a different creature: it has lizard-like scales, but it is no lizard: it walks upright and there is a gleam of intelligence in his eyes. Seeing the priest (Bruno)begin his chant, he cries out maniacally and attacks. It is fast and comes upon him with great speed. A knife flashes and the another, but only one hits (3pts dmg).

Something doesn't feel right. Kullonar takes out the Cudgel and swipes at the lizard-like dude and scores 10 pts damage on the lizard thing! (Damn!).

Bruno: roll a system shock to see if you were able to maintain concentration (d100).

Gildan took 5 dmg
Bruno took 3 dmg

Once Bruno rolls his system shock, we will move on to Round two.

End of Round 3:

Gildan wings the zombie corpse thing on his first arrow; The second arrow takes her in the eye. The azure glow fades as she falls to the floor of the crypt.

Ulrich hits the ghoulish monster for 4pts of damage.

The lizard thing retaliates against the Paladin: 2 atk w/ daggers - The grace of Pelor is with him: both miss. Hissing anger, the thing disappears.

For the lizard thing, picture a walking bipedal dragon of medium height. FYI

Gregor's on the ground, prone. Another deader with a blue gleam in his eyes shoots forward and attacks the vulnerable young man. Gregor, nimble like a cat, rolls out harm's way.

Kullonar gives a good smack to the Deader that went for Gregor: 6pts dmg

The Diaphanous window hanging floats downward, ghostlike then suddenly, again, it tries to wrap itself around Bruno. Bruno, alert, makes ready.

The sheet has the same Initiative as Bruno so both attack concurrently. The sheet missed again, much to the DMs dismay (3 fragging 6s on d20 in a row by your's truly...). Bruno, on the other hand, tore the slip in half. A hapless wail fades to nothing as the sheet disintegrates.

The ghoulish looking critter, seeing the sheet falling apart, attacks Bruno (claw, claw, bite, spit). One claw hits, and then the beasty hocks a loogy that hits him on his jaw for  7 points total damage.

There are only 2 opponents left that you can see.

The Booger Man attacks Gildan: claw, claw, bite, sneeze. Booger man gets a minor hit on Gildan for 1pt of damage, follows up with a bite for 5pts dmg. The he fumbles, and boogers fly everywhere: Like a little kid on the playground picking up a chewed up piece of bubble gum, Booger man only makes his efforts at cleaning the toxic chemicals oozing from its nasal cavity even worse. A few of you turn green at the sight.

Please kill this thing. LOL.

As the adrenaline wanes and weariness sets in, you note the macabre atmosphere of the place. For one thing, it appears that the former residents of this tomb were profaned in great detail - these were primary henchmen of Ingolf...their remains were used as the new decor in this crypt. It is a grisly discovery.

As for the rest:
Upon the female juju's head sits a finely wrought tiara worth 1200xp. Also adorning her fingers are twin gold rings with topaz gems worth 150 gold each (300 total for you math majors).

Also within are two +2 arrows, A scroll with three clerical spells: dispel magic, Create food and water and cure serious wounds. And on the floor sits a wolf pelt that is in extraordinary condition.

Re: Chapter Four: Lessons Learned

Fast forward:

As you near the exit to Ingolf's tomb, you note the skeletons are standing around, not moving. Unsure of why, you take the time to smash undead warriors to pieces, following the old adage: Never leave an enemy behind you.

The trek back to Yngvar's keep takes just shy of a week. There's one nasty squall, the rest of the journey is rather pleasant...outside of the fact that you had to carry Zan and Uthecar. Gregors was quite helpful, fashioning a sled of sorts for both the dead.

When the keep is in sight, you hear calls from the watchmen upon the ramparts, and a rich,  sonorous blast from one of the sounding horns resonates over the land. Soon many are atop the keep, looking down upon the party, waiting in wonder to see what is afoot. Among them, Selene and Dugger, with Antonin behind.

Yngvar joins them shortly thereafter and shouts, "Open the Gate!"

Atop the wall, Selene watches pensively, her mind on her husband, her heart upon Zan's return. For his part, Dugger senses something amiss there, but holds his tongue.

Once the gates are opened, a swarm of folk come down from the heights, all shouting to be heard. Again, Yngvar shouts every one down.

"The time for questions will come, but let's let them breathe for the nonce."

Turning to the survivors - for he does see the grim cast of the party and the burial shrounds of two fallen - he said, "To the hot springs, my friends. Questions can wait. A feast is being prepared in your honor."

Wrapping their friends and tying them to Gregor's sled was a grim reminder of the cost of their efforts in the valley; however, once they were through the squall Bruno found his spirits buoyed a bit. It was if the rain washed away the awful things they experienced in the past several days.

Nevertheless, while feeling somewhat better upon their arrival back at Yngvar's hold and very much looking forward to his hot springs his visage is grim even though they report somewhat good news in that while the barrows of the valley had been perverted by a great evil their mission cleansed them and at least now they have some understanding of what has happened there. His assumption is that their host, if not the Curate and others, might offer more information to plan their next moves.

Re: Chapter Four: Lessons Learned

A great fete takes place that evening. Boar and elk are on the table - the boar has an apple stuffed in its mouth. Spring onions and scallions are a small sample of the food shared. There's a lot of carousing and tall tales being told. Gregors in particular tells tales of the mighty heroes. But the wise among you stay silent, for the most part.

Yngvar also is quiet, allowing for some frivolity among his people in the face of much fear. As the night pushes on, the Jarl looks up and invites any among the party that wished audience to his antechambers. With the party comes Selene and Antonin, along with a halfling with watchful eyes.

For her part, Selene's eyes are sunken, her face gaunt. She had not taken Zan's death well. Antonin stands above her, solicitous of her well being. She says little, but listens as the men folk talk.

"Milady, my condolences for the loss of your friend. We shall honor his memory in the years to come."

Turning, he adds to Bruno, "And the memory of your comrade Uthecar - both their names will be graven upon the Fallen's Stone, the obelisk you might have noted just inside the gate. Now, please, tell me what you learned in the vale."

OOC: Ugh. I was really hoping we wouldn't have to rp the re-telling of our adventures as I've lost the notes I was taking about things and going back to search threads is such a challenge. So, with that caveat, please give what I write here as a draft. That is, if Bruno fails to mention something important or gives credit to the wrong PC/NPC don't take it as intentional and feel free to add whatever you'd like to what he says!

Seer, is the Curate with Selene and Antonin?

Bruno enjoys the feast, but mainly because it has been so long since they have had something other than trail rations and the comforts of the Jarl's hall. It had been difficult to give Lady Selene the news of Zan's death and it was made no better by memory of how affected his friend had been with the announcement of her nuptials. When he is asked to report he takes a sip of mead and a deep breath, "I hope you will forgive me if I speak to the point here this eve, my host and lords. My comrades and I are happy to fill in details and I will give a fuller written report, should it be desired.

"We found the valley to be as darked by fell forces as warned. Our investigation took us from barrow to barrow and in each we destroyed a variety of undead and other awful creatures, but we found no signs of what exactly wrought the evil. That is, until we finally came upon a mound that was seemingly untouched and within me a fair, holy maiden, Nimae, who served The Lady of the Wood and through her power has been able to keep untouched from the scourge.

"From her we learned that the being wreaking havoc in the vale was Mogens, who has returned for vengeance after being defeated by Jarl Hjalmar's army 70 years ago. While she did not know more than it was He who has returned, we might learn more of him or his stratagems in other barrows, so after a blessed rest in her mound we departed and in the next one we visited were faced by vileness greater than any we had faced up to that point.

"It was here that both of our brothers in arms fell and when we retreated to our base camp badly bloodied and with the help of brave and canny Gregors we refreshed ourselves and prepared for another foray into the dread place to finish off what we had started the following day. We did so and destroying the evil we found there we return to you knowing that with the loss of two stalwart comrades and the increasing power of the foes we found as we continued to search barrows we would need more help."

Taking a breath and another sip from his tankard, "And so I fear we return with too little information. I might have made it all even shorter had I simply said, 'Mogens has returned, but we do not know exactly where he is and he seems to have polluted the entire valley, except for the Barrow of the Lady of the Lake with his poison."

Kullonar has not really said anything, made any sound other than the grunt or growl of battle. He accepts the scroll with a nod, and a "My thanks, my brother in the faith."

Mostly quiet on the way back to the Jarl's place, Kullonar walks along glad for the rain for he feels it washes some of the filth of the tombs away.

In the baths, Kullonar washes and then soaks until his flesh is as wrinkled as a prune. He then dons clean clothing and offers coin for someone to clean his armor.

At the feast, Kullonar eats quietly and drinks deeply, hoping to wipe the horrible memories and the stench of the tombs out of his body. It doesn't work...but it doesn't hurt either.
Later, in the Jarl's antechamber, he sits quietly and listens to Bruno give a reckoning of their trip. He watches his faith brother as he talks and wishes he could speak so clearly. His words are blunt...just like a cudgel...as are his silent prayers to St. Cuthbert. And yet, he is still blessed and protected and sits here blissfully tipsy, if a bit sad, grateful that he is not another name carved into a stone.

Yngvar listens to Bruno's synapsis with a troubled mien. When the cleric is done, and after Selene waxes philosophic, he offers his take on the party's results.

"Ingolf was one of our mightiest warriors of old," he said. "He was a spearman and a swordsman of renown. He died many years ago and has slept quietly with his wife and his two favored retainers in the vale. It seems he sleeps quietly no more.

"The wraith you spoke of was Folke, another legend of  the Land of Song. It occurs to me now that this 'Mogens' has taken from each tomb the bodies and spirits of our greatest legends.

"Tales tell that fire is an effective means to attack these bogeymen, and holy water we will provide in as much abundance as our holy men can make them.

Despite his age, the Jarl's eyes keen and he studies each of you as if some momentous decision has been made.

"I was unsure of your intentions when you came here. I am not unsure any more. You have my blessing to use whatever methods you need to cast this scourge from our land. When your task is finished, we will light the bonfires of all our heroes so that they may find their rest in the halls of our fathers. Thus should I be welcome when my time comes.

Re: Chapter Four: Lessons Learned

Bruno is surprised that Selene will join them and the idea concerns him somewhat. Until now the party has been made up of adventurers and soldiers -- many of whom seem to have been in direct service to her. That many of the group are, or were, soldiers puts his mind at ease as to how they will behave, but others are not or do not understand her position, because they are not from the environs of the ArchBarony.

He gives a glance at Lord Zenon trying to read his take on the matter, but is careful not to stare or reveal any signs of concern. Rather when she mentions the hafling he turns and looks to him, "Well met, and welcome to the company, Dugger. Since Lady Selene was the original organizer of this group her introduction speak volumes!"

In response to the Jarl he raises his cup, "The evil that we face is such that even without your support I suspect my comrades and I would want to return and confront it, so it means much to us!"

His bashful smile is washed away with the gulp he takes and he continues, "Am I correct to understand that you do not know of this Mogens? I hoped that he, or whomever he once was, would be known and thus we might be better prepared to face him. If nothing else, from what you say your bards and priests would know about the remaining heroes who were put to rest in the valley. It seems notable to me that the various 'bogeymen' we fought did have differing powers. The holy water and fire weapons you give us will be most useful to us when we face them, but having some knowledge of who they were in life might enable us to confront them in Mogens' perverted unlife."

"He was Her Lady's second, and an uncompromising leader and solid tactician. Where she was supposedly mercurial, he was stoic and calm in the face of battle. Narrowly, he held the field against us.

"Conquest makes the most sense given what I think I understand of your history and the reasons he was driven away to begin with, Jarl. I fear his actions in the Valley are only preparation, and maybe warning, for what he plans.

"I am still wondering if the creatures we faced reflected the heroes they were in their lifetimes and if they DID, then it is possible that those we will face in the other barrows as we move through the valley will similarly reflect their living selves. Understanding this might help us prepare for each undead we shall face, so..."

Bruno describes the major undead they have faced and the barrows in which they faced them. He does not so much describe the actual fights that occurred, but how their enemies appeared and their powers, though understanding his audience he will give detail to make the story a bit more exciting than a mere litany of facts.
OOC: I am not doing this literally, because I don't want to take the time to go back and research everything, but if you say it's necessary I'll go back and edit.

Having given the descriptions and leaving room in his retelling for other party members to make comments to ensure the best information, Bruno pauses, "If there are obvious connections in what you hear, perhaps you or your bards may use knowledge of those heroes that remain in the barrows we have yet cleansed?"

OOC: Just to clarify what I'm trying to do here, Seer, if I'm misunderstood and it is not likely that we might gain some forewarning or understanding of what else we're going to face in the next phase of this adventure, no problem! I may be misreading/understanding things and the enemies we have faced may not be literal perversions of their living selves.

That said, there were encounters  you ran across that you'd never seen before. The best you could do is describe them to the Jarl, although he would not necessarily know some of the 'monsters' you encountered.

As a sidebar you might visit the keep's shrine and talk to one of the more experienced clerics therein.

That might be worthwhile.

"Your Bruno right.  Glad to be of help where I can."   He leaned in a bit closer to him. "That old elf over there"  He made a scrunched stuck up nose face.

Re: Chapter Four: Lessons Learned

Antonin, Lord Zenon was studiously quiet during the Jarl's meeting with the party. He'd had words with Selene earlier, but she wasn't one to give in, especially when her mind was made up. He had no doubt that the Curate would be wroth with him for letting his new bride disappear into the vale.

He reflected angrily that he was not a young elf anymore, well past the point of heading out into the wastes to do battle with undead. And yet, the thought did occur - it seemed preferable to meeting with Torin.

At this point, however, he keenly felt the weight of the years and besides, someone had to be present to tell the tale. That was not something he would leave for the Jarl.

As talk waned, he finally said, "Milord, I'll be acting liaison to our contingent until Torin returns."

"Of course its conquest," Yngvar said. "The dark lands, which is where we believe the first armies came from, were shrouded in shadow. Many thing that they were fleeing some grimmer fate. I can't tell for certain that it is true, but it certainly seems possible. As for Ingolf and Folke, there spirits are safe, I am sure. Their remains are but a vessel...at least that is what the priests say."

A moment later and old woman barges in. In her hands is a bag. Without ceremony, she dumps the entirety of her bag upside down. The contents are bones, mostly of small animals, but there are a few human digits as well. She crawls along the floor, careful not touch any of the bones. At last, she sweeps the bones back into her bag and stands.

"What do your redes portend?" Yngvar asked.

"Mogens has returned," the old woman replied. She looks around, her face creased with with deep crevices, taking particular note of the party. "The old enmity awakens and seeks what it sought long ago."

"We've known that for a fortnight, woman!" the Jarl practically spat. "Did your bones tell ought else?"

"Yes, yes," she said. "We knew, yet we did nothing but wait, milord. When steads started falling, we waited. When townsfolk disappeared, we waited. And when the dead showed up in droves, we shut ourselves in...against my earlier prognostications. You are fortunate, milord - the term seemed derogatory to those listening - that these fine warriors arrived when they did. The Halls of Jarl Yngvar are not so full of heroes any more."

The witch approached Kullonar, drew very close. "You've a nice way about you, Priest. There is a kindness within that one does not see in your blood very often. As a token of my regard: She hands him a small rod, perhaps 2.5 feet long.

I think She wants me to ask my questions now rather than when we meet? Or... The accent here still takes me longer to understand what locals are saying than it should, I guess, Bruno thinks to himself.

Recovering himself, "Yes, well, I very much appreciate that! It seems the Jarl is unable to answer the question I asked him earlier, which is understandable. And, I realize it may not even be practical given the nature of Mogens' magic; however, it does seem to me that it might be useful to know about who was originally buried in the barrows we have not yet visited. Knowing their abilities in life might give us some sense of what Mogens has brought out of them in unlife.

"If I am being naive about a necromancer's powers and what we shall be facing need not be reflected in who and what these heroes were when they were buried, at least I will have learned that! So, this is what I am seeking to learn... And if you or any other wisefolk have advice beyond, 'take holy water', it would be useful to have that knowledge as well."

They are the ones that held the coalition together during the Winter of Tears when Mogens and Her Dark Majesty unleashed their final assault. That would be Jarl Hjalmar and his son Teodor. Hjalmar survived the battle and was victorious. Teodor fell to treachery on the way home. He was buried with honors, and Hjalmar, driven by grief, spent the rest of his days in futile search for Teodor's killer.'

"As a matter of fact, Teodor was renowned for his blade work. No swordsman was he, though. Nor an axe man. Teodor was nifty with a dagger, and wielded one to great affect. It was said to be highly magical. Added to his great strength and nimble quickness, he was a foe to be reckoned with."

Hjalmar was an axe man, puissant, though not overly so. His claim to fame was great strength, and he was a keen leader of men.

As for the layout of the vale, there was no rhyme or reason to the placement of the tombs. Those who died in battle were not given any special consideration unless they left instructions for internment in a specific area. Thus, what may seem a haphazard approach is just that. You will have to search from tomb to tomb I'm afraid."

Teodor and Hjalmar are the remaining significant heroes whose barrows we've not yet found.
