Into the Breach Once More

A day of planning proceeds apace. With wisdom from the Old Witch, assistance from Yngvar, including use of his vault, and some thoughts from Doubting Tomas, you gather together for another feast - for what else do barbarians do besides eat in the cold dead of winter?

Just as soon as the feast starts, it seems to end. The night seems not long enough - soon all of you take to your beds, a final idyll before another visit to the vale.

ooc: Any final words, needs, activities before you set off? Don't be like Bilbo: make sure you have a cloak and a kerchief with you on your journey there and back again!

Bruno will take advantage of the Jarl's vault for his coin, but spend some of it on a new cloak and tunic to wear under his armor as well as a robe to wear over it. The clothing he brought with him from Ratik is heavy, but it occurs to him that stuff made in these lands is likelier to be better suited to the weather here.

He also replaces the lantern oil he used and adds 4 additional vials, so he know has 10.

Finally, he gets 10 pieces of scroll paper or something similar and pieces of charcoal so that they may make scratchings (or whatever it's called) should they come across things useful for such. [He's thinking partly that it's clear they need to take even better notes from here on out.]

Kullonar needs nothing from the Jarl's larder; he is ready to move out as soon as they can. He spends as much time as possible outside and in the cold weather. With his new bearskin cloak, he feels very comfortable in the wind and snow.
He does consider getting a fur-lined cap for his head...one that he can don or doff quickly. If there is something like that...or something that could be fashioned rather quickly, he will purchase it.

Gildan replaces a strap on his leather armor that had been damaged in the previous fighting. He even manages to attach it inexpertly but functionally.

OOC: Boss, are you okay to just roleplay that rather than rollplay? I figure armor always needs some upkeep.

Ulrich will help Gildan with his armor while getting himself ready to go again. He packs his gear on his mule and his horse and readies to leave when everyone is ready. He'll grab 4 more pints of oil to carry 8 total.

The next morning dawns beneath a pale mist. It lends itself to some grumbles among the adventurers. The Jarl is present, as is the Witch. Of Doubting Tomas, there is no sign. After a brief conversation and handshakes all around, the party sets off.

ooc: We have to update the marching order, folks, please.

ooc2: I'll be rolling randomly for encounters and such until you reach the vale.

Dugger took the three offered flask of holy water from Kullonar (a bit of a back post)

Dugger seemed to be a kid in a candy store as he stocked up on more oil and holy water.  (10 of each).  Makes you wonder where he is putting all this stuff.  Oh a wool blanket or two found their way into his possession. ;)

Making ready to leave, Dugger, looked around for a horse of his own.  "Anyone gonna use that big one over there?"

Not one for animals, Kullonar goes with Dugger to find a horse.

He pays for the saddle, tacking, feed, etc > all he needs to ride a horse...even though he asks for assistance in saddling and bridling his new mount.

When it time to set out Bruno meets the party at the stable and sees to his mount. He is still not entirely comfortable with riding and preparing his horse has an extra tinge of sadness, because he recalls the glances and muttered exchanges he'd had with Uthecar when they set out for the vale the first time, Dwarves walk, dammit, that's why the gods gave us these strong, but legs to begin with!

Nevertheless, there and back again the first time he had learned how to ride and care for a mount well enough and if the poor beast was going to have to bare him he figures he may as well make sure it is well taken care of. Towards that end he cast Speak with Animal and, well, chatted with the horse while doing so. With this he made sure he and the beast has a bit more of a connection and it was only once he had made sure the horse rubbed down and all of the tack and gear set on him that he finally mounted.

By that time the spell had ended, but he felt more confident than he had riding previously and was feeling good despite his trepidations about the challenges before them.

Outside of cold weather and overcast skies from day 1 to Day 5, the journey is quiet. Some of you find that to be fortuitous, others murmur 'When will the hammer fall.'

Sure enough, the hammer falls on the 6th day when you're still a couple of hours from Gregors second hold. You run into a patrol led by a devil kin, the same type with the wiry, bristly beard as you encountered before. Recall the pumpkin head if you don't remember. Along with the bearded devil are a handful of ghouls and a larger version that smells even worse than the ghouls. The smell is atrocious and as you draw close, you all need to make a saving throw vs. Poison.

There are 6 ghouls, 1 ghast and 1 bearded devil.

ooc: I am going to do combat a bit different so that we maximize game time: instead of posting just the initiative, I want all of you to post your initiative, your 'to Hit' roll and your damage roll at the same time.

Game on! Thanks!

Back into the breach:

Initiative:
Bruno 7
Gregors7
gildan 6
Dugger 6
Myrrick 6
Ulrich 5
Kullonar 4
Selene 2

Bruno pulls forth the shield that also acts as his Holy Symbol and calls forth the power of Moradin: 2 ghouls flee into the night.
Gregors: Unsure of who is what and what is who, he takes on the nearest Ghoulish figure with his spear: Scores 4 points of damage and the beastie falls and moves no more (weak assed Ghoul...).
Gildan: 2 arrows are enough to take out another ghoul. It stumbles, then falls to the ground.
Myrrick fumbles around a bit, trying to get used to the new sword. He misses.
Ulrich swings his mighty sword, and scores 8 points damage to another ghoul: It stumbles, leaking black blood from the massive wound, then it falls and moves no more.

As of right now 3 ghouls are dead, 2 ghouls are turned and are running away at full speed (120'): this leaves 1 ghoul, 1 ghast and a Bearded Devil.

The Bearded fellow takes his turn; carrying a wicked glaive, he rushes forth to do battle with the Paladin! Sadly for him (and the DM), the Bearded One misses by a country mile.

That leaves Selene who casts three magic missiles at one of the remaining ghoulish figures - she does 11 points of damage and the final ghoul falls.

That leaves the ghast: rushing forward with his diabolcal overseer, the Ghast notes Bruno's holy shield and races toward the priest: There is scrabbling and scraping across the doughty dwarf's shield, but try as it might, the ghast finds no purchase. Round one is done!

Go ahead and push forward - I had a question for Dugger that needed clarification, but I don't want momentum to stop. Good round, fellas. Well played. There are two foes remaining.

Dugger hits once for 3 pts of damage on the last ghoulish attacker.

Into the Breach Once More

Listen folks: half you guys come on the board, post your rolls, then move on to real life. This is fine except that I'm left deciphering what exactly I am looking at. That takes me a long time. I gave up trying to figure one player's rolls yesterday.

The reality is that we don't get smarter as we get older. I'm certainly not as smart as I used to be, thus I've come up with my way of handling combat that is pretty simple for me, and doesn't take that much of your time.

First: my eyes are not 20/20 anymore. I need you guys to just use the regular font as we all use on RPol. There are a couple of you who like use the super-small script for some damn reason. That makes my job MUCH harder. This isn't a style contest.

Also, the only font's that come clearly are Red, Blue, Dark Blue, Dark Green, Purple, Brown. Contrary to popular belief, orange is not a good color for 2 reasons: On some browsers it does not show through clearly. Also, it's the same color as PMs which might cause some confusion.

Second: This is the way I want you to transcribe your combat rolls. I've said this a number of times, I'll keep saying until you guys get it right:

The first thing you roll is Inititive. It is 1x/combat.

The second thing is To hit/AKA 'attack.' Those terms are synonymous (same meaning). If you have more than one attack, your 'To Hit' should reflect that in column form. I will illustrate that in my example.

Damage: if you have more than one damage roll then reflect it in column form. This is similar to 'To Hit.'

For example: Bob the Barber has 3 attacks per round with his golden shears. You would reflect it this way: (numbers are made up).

Inititive: 5

To hit: 17
To hit: 14
To hit: 6

Damage: 5
Damage: 7
Damage: 0 miss

Very simple, very straightforward, very easy for me. I should have figured this out earlier, but I didn't. However, moving forward I expect that you will do it this way. Thank you for understanding and for playing. I'm going to keep this post up here as well as in the Rules section.

Edit: Those of you who read this post, please share with your comrades. This is not an easy jaunt, it is a very complex adventure that will only get more complex as the game goes on. I want to make this an adventure that you guys remember for as long as you continue roleplaying. Thanks, The Seer.

Round 2

Back into the breach:
[Private to GM: Ghouls/Ghast 2 init Bearded Devil One 3 init Bearded Devil Two 4 init

Initiative:
Bruno 7
Gregors7
gildan 6
Dugger 6
Myrrick 6
Ulrich 5
Kullonar 4
Selene 2

At this point, I'm going to abbreviate my normal descriptions: Gildan did 20 points damage with 2 arrows & 1 critical hit!. Dugger did a couple more points damage. Myrrick added a bunch more, the ghast gave up the ghost, so to speak (Dead). Selene fired off another round of magic missiles that did 10 points damage to the Infernal. It was a good round for the good guys.

Having taken on wounds and with no recourse, the bearded devil tries to gate in one of his friends. There's a sudden displacement in the air, and then another Bearded Fiend arrives. A gleam shines in both the infernals eyes as they make ready for combat.

DM Note: these infernals have a 35% chance of gating another of their kind - I rolled an 18 - FWIW.

A final note: Thank you for putting up with my demands. I can be a bit caustic at times - I think that's the Navy Petty Officer in me. You guys did great this round - high marks for Gildan and Dugger. It really made a big difference. Now, onto round 3!

Gildan looses two, only hits once for 8 points of damage Bearded Devil 1
Dugger Does 8 pts dmg - One of the darts missed. The other 2 hit.

The second Bearded dude attack with two claws: Critical hit! Natty 20 total of 8 points damage on Bruno!

Re: Into the Breach Once More

Having taken care of the attacking infernals and undead, the party move on. It is a little bit shorter route than the original hideaway, but the fight slows things enough so that you actually get to Gregor's haunt after dusk falls. All of you are hungry and tired, but there is a sense of optimism that you didn't have during the prior engagement.

The place itself is a sort of natural culvert with a small trickle of water that gathers at it's lowest point. There are dry areas along the edges, enough that all of you will have dry bedrolls to sleep in. Gregors attempts to explain how it works, but the rest of you aren't really interested. Food has become a priority, followed by sleep.

ooc: Maybe some roleplay here. Otherwise we'll continue on the following morning.

Feel free to continue roleplaying if you desire - I'm going to push the scene to dawn as the party makes ready to head to the vale. The party has a cold breakfast, though Gregors does make a pot of hot kaf. Once you're fortified, Gregors gives one of the rangers a map that will lead directly into the vale (CHOOSE ONE OF THE RANGERS TO FOLLOW THE GAME MAP).

ooc: Basically, the party is coming into the vale from a different direction, from the north instead of the northwest. You can hear the waterfall to the northwest in the distance as you arrive, but the surrounds where you stand are quiet, even peaceful. You stand on overlook that gives you a broad picture of the vale itself. You can choose any direction you wish to go.

DON'T FORGET TO LOOK AT THE GAME MAP. Good luck!

Bruno pulls out a scroll case takes a rough map that he created for his report to the Archbaron. He is not a cartographer, but he has created something that reflect the barrows they have visited and those they have seen, but not yet made it to, "Here you go, brother", he says handing over to Kullonar.

"You'll see that I've put an 'x' through the mounds we've cleared. The one that is circled is Nimae's.

"I was thinking the best approach would be geographical... First stop this time will be the one closest."

You will note that there is one with an 'x' and a check mark and it is an easy guess for everyone who was part of our first foray into the vale that it is the barrow where Uthecar and Zan fell.

Gildan, you can use the Game Map atop the preferences, or you can use the older map in the Map thread. The problem with the older map is it's not drawn to scale. I sketched the true map from the map in the module, so it will be more true than the old one. Not a lot of difference - I suspect that the red dots will be different, but I did a pretty good job laying out the rest of the vale.

One other note: I forgot the bridge over the stream. My bad.

As you look at the surrounds you note the gorecrows getting restless. A few of them alight from their perches. Then a few more. Not all take flight, but many do, flying high toward a cold sun before circling back. They keep a wary eye on the bowmen.

Rather he points out the gorecrows and says to those who were not with the party previously, "You can ignore those things. Forgetting we had been warned to stay away from them previously I attempted to use 'Speak with Animals' when we first entered the vale and it did not work. Seemingly they're ought but a ploy to make us waste time.

Kullonar pats Bruno on the shoulder. "Well said and lead on, brother. I must admit, I miss Uthecar's boldness to just wade in with his axe. But, I daresay, Ulrich will make up for that."
A rare chuckle escapes the Half-Orc and he hurries along after the paladin.

ooc: you probably figured this out already: ignore the dot that's sitting next to and almost in the waterfall. The first mark is going to be right of the waterfall - there will be a small red dot as the indicator. Let me know if that's confusing.

The first mark, which I think you guys picked up on, is 60' to the right the right of the waterfall. Holler if you have questions.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Ulrich and Dugger lead the way, with the rogue dropping small tokens like popcorn on a trail. The party winds it's way down the path from the ridge, eventually drawing close to what appears to be an ancient crypt. (the first red dot).

There may have been some marks on the face of the the tomb, it's hard to tell, but they unintelligible now. Dirt covers the face and the surrounds are covered in thick tufts of grass. The sun is shining, but cold.

State actions, please. Be specific. As always, thank's for playing!

For some reason it takes an inordinate amount of time for the party to discern the cracks that indicate the doorway. Even Dugger has a hard time, but eventually he finds a seam and uses his dagger to scrape excess dirt and grit from the stone. Some thirty minutes later, the tomb opens with a sudden 'poof' of air that smells just nasty.

He looked at the others, "Now there no way to deny that we were here." he quickly wiped his dagger clean not a scratch on it.  He checked to door to make sure that there wasn't any mechanism that would have the door close behind them.

With Ulrich's and Bruno's light sources, Dugger points out a strange tableau: A lone skeleton sits upon a stone throne (how about that for alliteration!!!). Upon it's lap sits a rusted long sword covered in cobwebs. Other than that, there seems to be no other identifying marks in the tomb. Actions, lads and lasses.

Right now, you guys are standing on the fringe looking at the skeletal remains. It was a 5' passage that led you all to this circular chamber, so it would have been a single file. Those of you in front note that any armor or any sort of metals has long ago turned to dust. You get the sense that this is one of the oldest tombs in the vale.

With room made in the chamber, Bruno also moves into it. Taking in the scene he says a quick prayer to the Soul Forger in honor of whomever the enthroned figure was.

Scanning the room, "It says much that the spirit of whomever lays here pushed out the evil that was sent to infect it."

As he speaks he eyes scan the room.

OOC: A few questions:

1. How large is this chamber?

2. Are there any other doorways in this chamber?

*Detect new construction or passage/tunnel -- 75% probability (10:35, Today: Bruno Rhunthane rolled 72 using 1d100) to see if I can tell whether it/they are original construction or added on after this original chamber was created.

Re: Into the Breach Once More

Good question:

The passage from the entryway was 5', thus single file. At the end, it opened to about a 10' semi-circle.

The throne sits in the middle of the small chamber. There appears to be no other portals or doors in the chamber. Your Dwarven sense indicates that the chamber is all original construction.

Closer look gives you the impression that the skeletal remains are just that. The figure on the throne sits with his trusty sword. The sword itself sits on the figure's lap and is covered in cobwebs and rust. Perhaps you could oil it up and take it, though given it's tarnish, its not likely to be an effective weapon anymore.

Any other questions or comments or actions?

Re: Into the Breach Once More

Ulrich opens the door. There is a similar appearance to the other portals that you've opened - outside of the tales inscribed on the face of the tombs, it seems the folk of the Land of Song didn't go for ostentatious artwork or reliefs on the face of the tombs.

Upon entry, the first thing Ulrich notices is a short passage hewn from the living stone. It  leads into a larger space. The next thing that he takes note of are the worn but finely made pictograms relating Ingemar's brave deeds in life. This seems to indicate that this particular hero was especially worthy of the name.

The tomb itself is foot deep in water and very damp - it makes for a slippery passage. The ceiling is but 6' high, another affectation that you may recall from the Wraith's tomb - that seems ages ago. There is an unpleasant miasma that suffuses the surrounds and a thick, moldy stench that makes breathing difficult. Against the walls on either side are stone biers. The desiccated remains of of Ingemar and perhaps his wife lie in state.

Hanging on the wall are the bone jaws of some massive animal.

Silence pervades and the darkness awaits. Actions?

the passage is single file.

Re: Into the Breach Once More

Enough of my whining. Game on!

Round 1

DM Note: Any character that saves once then fails to save are at -1 for the To hit roll. Any character who fails twice is at -2
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first big baddie owns initiative! Sword and dagger as a 6HD fighter: The beast swings, but misses with his sword. The dagger, however, scores for 3 points of damage on Ulrich, who rushed forward to protect the priests.

The second baddie, sword and dagger in hand, attacks, as well, and crushes it: Natty 20 and 18. The natty 20 good for 8 plus an additional 4: 12points damage. The dagger hits for an additional 2 points of damage for a total of 14 pts damage to Myrrick who has rushed toward the front to get in on the battle.

Kullonar swings and hits on a glancing blow, but it doesn't seem to effect the stinky bastard.

Dugger's got that old fashioned moxie as he slides by the stench and does his thing!

Gildan misfires 2x. The first arrow nearly hits Ulrich but winds up missing. The shaft breaks against the stone interior. The second is complete miss, wending it's way past all the party members until it passes on in the darkness.

Selene shouts in frustration: "If you would get out of my way I could cast a fireball!" She settles instead on flinging three magic missiles at the stinky feller on the first bier. 10 points dmg to stinky feller.

Myrrick swings and misses. Womp Womp wah...

Ulrich brings forth the flaming sword of flame and even with the taste of bile in his mouth, he does his thing. He goes to the second Bier (because the DM can be nice now and again) and he scores 9 points damage vs the undead foe!

Bruno casts bless.

Before round 2 starts, I want to clarify: If you failed both saves, you have now instead -1 penalty. If you had only 1 save but failed the other, you now have broken even. Please note, the baddies had initiative, so all hits and misses count.

Re: Into the Breach Once More

OOC: You referred to 'spectral voices', Seer, but I was uncertain whether or not I knew what sort of undead these actually were and given that I'm still at a level where I can't Turn some undead I didn't want to assume. Glad to know I could've, though! ;)

Perhaps it is the number of barrows they have already cleared and many undead they have faced through them, but when Bruno presents his holy shield and commands the undead duo before them it seems as if the collected frustration, fear, and fright of those prior experiences are poured into it.

The result washes over both creatures and as if the marriage vows, taken so many decades ago, connect them literally in this moment of unlife, their movements suddenly seize up. As if choreographed their blades cease slashing and turning together, almost balletically, they flee away from the brightness of the Soul Forger's symbol into the dark, winding corridors behind them.

Bruno takes a breath and turns to the party as a whole. Perhaps it is only the success of his Turning, but there is an extra flash in his eyes, "Comrades, I think you will agree that the legendary power that has perverted the heroes who lay in these barrows works by perverting, disordering nature. None of us individually have the power to stop Mogens, but together we do. It is, I think you will agree, our unity that empowers us.

“We might expect, therefore, that He will use our moments of disunity and distraction to better enable his creatures to destroy us. So, Ulrich, meet Selene, who has worn neither the arms, nor the armor of a warrior since she has joined this camaraderie. Selene, meet Ulrich and the rest of us who stand in front of you in the marching order and will continue to be limited in our movements as much by the geography of these corrupted catacombs as we are by the creatures that attack within them.

"Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's stop the bickering that will only give our enemy the openings he needs to create the disunity that empowers him?"

Bruno was taken aback by the question Dugger asked him so much that he actually stops suddenly, though he gracefully manages to do it in a manner that does not cause Selena to bump into him. Indeed, her presence helps him recover himself and he continues another step when Dugger then asks his question of her and he nods finally gaining use of his tongue, "Aye, the Continual Light spell is something we may ask our god for at a higher level of ability than I am today. I may cast the Light spell, and did pray for it this morning, but it has a finite duration, which is why I'm using this lantern now."

He pauses, "Were you to decide to become a cleric, Dugger, there is much you could learn to do such as provide the blessings of the god you worship and represent like Turning the Undead, casting Light and Continual Light spells..."

Kullonar, If you pursue too closely the deader's can (and will) turn tail and attack you. It was Bruno's turning that led the way & he is engaged in a spiritual conversation with Dugger.

Ulrich: you sense evil. It seems to pervade the entire area.

From the initial chamber, the passage narrows to about 5'. Movement is slower than normal because of the confined space (75% pace). From there, you walk about 20' and come to a intersection: you can go left (up the map) or right.

Everyone re-roll your initiative & attack and dmg except for Kullonar who is surprised to find 2 more deaders leaping out at him from the side passage. They get free shots - of the six attacks, only one hits, but it's a telling blow (8hps damage).

Kullonar has to roll for poison & paralysis, so he needs to make two successful rolls, else he's poisoned, sickened or both.

By the way, you guys got a get out of jail free card. I did not account for paralysis in that initial scrum. My bad - wont happen again.

Selene cries out: Step Back! Like a prophet from the beginning of time, her authority rings out. A small burning mote forms before her, then it shoots away quickly, growing as it does until a mighty explosion sears the surrounds.

In spite of the tight spaces, there are enough openings that diffuse the flames in different directions. Only Kullonar takes the brunt of the flames...along with two dead ghasts.

ooc: both ghasts are crispified. The surrounds are preternaturally silent after the loud explosion.

Kullonar is down 24 points of burning damage.

Myrrick takes half damage due to proximity (12 hp of damage).

The stillness that surrounds does not quell the stench that remains. Kullonar is critically hurt - 24 pts - the scars will remind him of his folly.

Myrrick got seared on his neck and part of his face, though those wounds likely will heal fully as time permits.

The rest of the party take a deep breath, eyes darting about for any sign of additional foes. For her part, Selene is genuinely contrite. "I just wanted to help!" she offered, tears welling in her eyes.

ooc: Alright gang, what are you going to do?

He checked to see if he was still breathing and bandaged what wounds he could.  He quickly checked to see if he carried a healing potion or two.  "Hey Orc man, hang on."

If he finds any he will roll him over and start pouring the healing potion down his throat.  "Anyone got any healing spells?"

Bruno is taken aback by the seeming immaturity of Selen's attack. It is as if she does not know how to use her own magic. Directly after that thought flies through his head he realizes that his friend lies stricken and that inspires him as if nothing else could.... Well, that and the halfing calling his friend an 'Orc man'.

Moving quickly moves up beside Dugger speaking bruskly, "He's not an 'Orc', half-man! Clear me space!"

He begins speaking a prayer in dwarven and lays hands upon Kullonar.

OOC: i'm a bit unclear on Kullonar's situation, but I take it he's not dead. Cast a Cure Moderate Wounds:

He made his way over to Selene, "Ummm... I know that Kullonar was a bit reckless and all.  But flinging that fireball kind of falls in the same category Don't you think?  I know that we are still working on learning how to be a team.  I"m sure you're use to being able to tell people what to do and have them do it, but what we have here is different."  He waved his hand to the dwarves, half_orc, elf, half-elf, and finally himself a Half-ling. The party takes care of the business of healing those who needed it. Kullonar in particular was scorched near to death, with only Bruno's hands of healing staving off the grim reaper. Those duties finished, the party takes stock of ammunition and spells. Gone is one mean fireball by the elfess. I'd like to get a general summary of where we stand with supplies, spells and ammo for everyone else. This will set up the rest of this crypt, so be as thorough as possible.

Once this is done, the adventure will continue.

The party had wound their way through a snaking passage to where another set of ghasts were lingering. Those were the ghasts that took the brunt of the fireball. Dugger's efforts at treasure hunting in the p-ways are in vain.

After a brief respite, you have a decision to make: follow the branching passage up and to the right, or explore the alcove where the two ghasts were fireballed.

It's a challenge to give you an accurate picture of where you are: that's purposeful as the author of the module clearly wanted the environment to be as dangerous as the monsters. He did an okay job of that - recall the larva!

That said, it makes my job exponentially more difficult to describe. But, as they say, when the tough gets going, the the going gets tough...or something like that.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The party came across the fried deaders in the little crossway with the niche. At this point, you have two choices. The original one was heading from the crypt opening to the 'Y' intersection and following up from there, or passing by the niche where the deaders are to see where that passage might lead.

Re: Into the Breach Once More

The initial surprise goes to the skeletons. LOL!

Round 1

Dugger leads off: his attack hits, but doesn't seem to damage the skeletons as much as he thought it would. On the other hand, Kullonar has a solid swipe with his morning star.

Then Bruno ruins the party by turning the skeletons. They skitter, slip and slide though the muck, until they disappear back the way the party came.

The crypt descends into silence once again.

Party's actions!

Following the skeletons proves to be problematic as some flee back the way they came while others stand and huddle before a curtain of bones. The water is icy cold, enough to make you shiver. It is also quiet, too much so for your liking. Upon first glance there does not seem to be a way out.

Dugger, Gildan and Selene all take note of something strange about the bone screen, although Selene's teeth are chattering so bad that she can barely speak. "T-t-t-he s-scre-een hides a p-por-t-t-al.". Selene and Kullonar lose 1 point of constitution for as long as they are in this area. That includes loss of HP due to loss of constitution.

OOC: Side note: Kullonar also fails on a natural 1. There are some moments where I really shake my head regarding 1st edition rules. This is one of them. d20 is a much cleaner mechanism for things like ability scores and saving throws. The 1st edition rules DMG says specifically that 1 is a failure everytime. FYI.

Sorry, Seer, but I'm a bit confused despite your attempt to clarify. (mea culpa!)

At this time we see:

OOC: To clarify - there were 7 skeletons. 4 retreated toward the niche area, three huddled against the bone barrier.

AND the Ghast that has just crashed through the bone barrier.

This means that the remaining skeletons in the niche area have not been attacked and are still Turned.

Bruno, Gilden, and Ulrich attacked the 3 skeletons before the Barrier, none of them have dropped, but are now no longer Turned.

This means that Bruno has 3 skeletons + a Ghast before him that will attack as of this round. Right?

Re: Into the Breach Once More

To start with: Bruno's question. The niche area is a 5x5 area that that is about 25' away. As far as you know the four skeletons retreated to the niche area when you turned them. For all you know, they may have run all the way to the entrance to tomb. The other three are still in the chamber cowering frpm turning attempt, and as the ghasts come through the bones the skeletons remain turned.

Those of you who are suffering from the extreme cold must take a -2 to hit.

Everyone must save vs the ghast stench.

[Private to GM: ghast 1: 5; ghast 2: 6; ghast 3: 2]

Bruno casts bless +1 to 'to hit' and saving throws

Ulrich fumbles: loses one round

Kullonar man's up, smacks the big nasty in the nose for 9 points of dmg, despite the extreme cold, eliciting a roaring cry from the foe that seems muffled within the tomb.

The Big Nasty comes back with a claw, claw, bite tandem and scores 11 points vs. Kullonar.
Kullonar must save vs. paralysis

The second nasty attacks claw, claw, bite: Miss, Miss, Miss. Can't make this stuff up...

Myrrick: gives his sword a swing and a miss. The second ghast misses 3x vs Myrrick - standoff!

Dugger tries the old 'I can see you, can you see me?'

Selene fires off a few more rounds of magic missiles for 12 points damage vs the smallest of the ghasts.

Waiting on Gildan

The third ghast gives a go at Dugger: claw, claw, bite - both claws miss, but the bite hits for 8 points dmg: roll save vs paralysis.

Please note: I don't play where you have to save three times from one attack. FYI. However, if you face multiple attacks from the same type of monster, you have to save each time.

Gang: I tweaked the combat matrix. It's a work in progress. Bear with me.

Round 2: Time to man up!

Those of you who are paralyzed and/or cold will remain so until I say otherwise.

Active effects:

Bruno: Bless +1 to hit and saving throws.
Ulrich: Fumble is over - you may attack this round - your initiative is 1. You also have a poison penalty of -2 to hit and dmg.
Selene -2 penalty for cold
Kullonar -2 penalty for cold
8 points dmg to Dugger
11 points dmg to Kullonar

Initiative as follows:

Gildan: 7 - hits 2x with a crit hit, total damage: 22pts - the big fella is staggering!

Myrrick: 7 - A miss for the doughty ranger!

Ghast #2 6Bruno 6: 13 pts dmg to Ghast #2

Ghast #2 responds with claw claw bite: The claws miss, but the bite is deadly! 8 points damage to Bruno and roll for save against paralysis.

Ghast #1 5 (big daddy)Kullonar 6: 14 pts of damage going toe to toe with the big nasty! This is gonna be great!

Big nasty comes back: two claw hits for 5 points of damage against Kullonar! Roll a save for paralysis - don't forget Bruno's Bless!

Selene 5: Fires three more magic missiles for 5 points of dmg on the last ghast - the last ghast has a last gasp left in him!

Ghast 3 Attacks Ulrich, hits claw and bite for 7 points damage and you must roll save vs paralysis.

Ulrich 1: A miss for the worthy paladin!

Dugger tries to flank the big nasty, but his attacks go awry!

Both Kullonar and Bruno, roll saves vs paralysis,

Let me know if you see any discrepancies. Thx for playing!

DM Combat Matrix
Round designation: The beginning of Round 3

Initiative:

Gildan/Absolutely Destroys the Big Nasty! Another 22 points of damage. BOO-YAH! The Ghast is done.

Myrrick: A worthy try, but no bueno.

Dugger: 7: As the big Nasty gets a nasty surprise, Dugger looks for another target. Lo and behold, there is one standing nearby with his back turned. Dugger strikes for 21 points of damage against the 2nd Ghast which promptly falls dead (again?).

Ghast 2: 6

Bruno: 6 11 points damage

Ghast 1:

Kullonar: 5 Strikes the last ghast for a hardy 9 points of damage

Selene: 5 Follows up with 11 more points of damage and the last ghast falls to a last gasp before expiring

Ghast 3: 2

Ulrich: 1

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Characters/NPCs:

Bruno:  Must save vs paralysis. If successful, state your
actions/roll the dice

Dugger: State your actions/roll the dice

Gilden: State your actions/roll the dice

Kullonar: Must save vs paralysis. If successful, state your
actions/roll the dice

Myrrick: State your actions/roll the dice

Selene: DM

Ulrich: State your actions/roll the dice.

*Conditions: Kullonar and Selene still suffer -2 to hit/dmg for cold
*Bruno's Bless is still in effect
*Ulrich is still penalized for poison rot from the ghast at -2 to hit/dmg
*Kullonar currently has 19 pts dmg
Dugger sits at 8 points of damage

Please recall the format of taking actions as follows:

Damage

FWIW: I am pretty happy with the Matrix. Let me know your thoughts and suggestions.

14:17, Today: Bruno Rhunthane rolled 12 using 1d20.  Paralysis. [+1 Bless = 13] I think this is successful, buy may be wrong...

If correct:

Using the rolls I made earlier in the week for this attack.
13:46, Wed 31 Mar: Bruno Rhunthane rolled 23 using 1d20+6.  Short Sword Attack.
13:46, Wed 31 Mar: Bruno Rhunthane rolled 11 using 1d6+7.  Short Sword Damage.

Bruno thrusts his short sword that the Ghast before him.

OOC: I like the matrix! How should we use it? As I have here and you'll pull it all together or should we respond by quoting the matrix post and inserting our actions, rolls, etc.?

First off, The Grace of Moradin is obviously with you. When a race has typically high scores in constitution, it generally means good things for the character.

Regarding the matrix: just keep posting the way you normally do. As said in the round 2 recap, I'll take care of the paperwork. I will have the template set up in order each round.

I think it'll make a difference.

A cold silence falls upon the party. Where the bones were pushed forward, there is a passage of sorts to follow. The party has a breather as you take stock. Suddenly, a gong rings out from somewhere deeper in the tomb complex. What was a breather suddenly takes on the aspect of trepidation.

ooc: There's a hoard of treasure on these three Ghasts. I am going to inventory and put together a list for you guys. I'm also going to tweak the Matrix. There was redundancy in the Matrix that I did not like. It's ongoing project...

Dugger all about checking out things with the ghast no more.  He casually go through the items found and placing them in a pile.  "Well, hello what do we have here."  He lifted up a silver necklass with a onyx gem set in it.  He held it up to the fire light, "If you don't say".  He even gave a whistle of excitement.  "This here will fetch some nice coins.  Even happen to know several folk that would be interesting in buying something like this."

He looked to see if any had reservations on the group taking the items found.

I do believe that he knows what it is

Bruno notes the wealth and hears the distant gong looking in the direction from which it seems to be coming, "Yes... Uh, yes, go ahead and collect this stuff, but let's be quick about it, ladds.

"Let's see who is making that ominous racket!"

Having spoken he pulls a potion bottle out of his satchel and downs a healing potion.

Dugger shrugs and then made quick work of loot stashing it away in a small bag that seemed to hold more than it should.

Gold Torc with Ingemar's name   100gp
4 gold rings                    120gp 120gp 170gp 350gp
coins  800 silver,  360 gold
wrought silver necklace with an onyx jewel (TBD)

He did check out the +2 Studded leather armor for size, it was after all better than what he was wearing.

He looked at copper coins, "Anyone able to cast one of those wizard glowing light spells." and then over at Selene with a raised eyebrow.

"Perhaps the next time in town you can light up some coins for me."

Dugger grabbed a couple of handfuls of copper coins to later use.

Bruno takes back the lantern and reattaches it to his belt, "Right. I presume all of your work is generally in the bright light of day.

"A 'Light' does not have a permanent duration, so casting the spell on coins back in town would enlighten them little more than attempting to...,"
he stops himself.

Taking a breath he continues, "Right, anyway, is there anything amongst the treasure that will be immediately useful?"

Taking a look at Dugger and then glancing around the party he nods at the suit of armor, "It seems that the rest of us have sufficient armor for now... Why don't you take that, it seems like good stuff that's better than what you're wearing now."

Dugger's eyes got a bit bigger when he was told that he could put the armor to use.  He did a quick check making sure that it was clean on the inside. "This is a bit better than my leather armor."

He took off his leather armor, he was surprisingly fit.

and then put on the studded leather.

He did a small leap into the air a bit more than 5 feet and clicked his heels together before landing with cat-like grace.
