Tears of Sorrow and Laughter

The ghasts are dead. For some of you, it is hard to imagine. Seems like you've been fighting undead for ages, though reality is that its been a bare two weeks. Somewhere Gregor is working on shoring up the redoubt as best he can as he waits each day for the party to return.

Each one of you feels a subtle change, something that sits on the edge of the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Do YOU believe in miracles?

The undaunted Bruno has learned much of himself and more from his companions. Kullonar holds tightly to Cuthbert's Cudgel. Gildan looks over all his implements like a fell craftsman going about his business. Dugger walks with swagger as Myrrick is a bit more cautious. Ulrich stands steady in the face of evil, while Selene has learned a measure of humility.

Are you truly more than the sum of your parts? We shall see...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a loud clanging sound as if from a gong that seems to reverberate not just in these warrens, but through the entirety of the Vale of the Sleeping Jarls. If you counted on surprise, you may have to look elsewhere for such succor. But, for the time being, it seems you have a moment of respite before the storm.

ooc: I'm heading out to visit family this week. I will have my computer with me, but to be honest I probably will get maybe one or two posts in during the week. Hang tight, this next chapter promises to be really interesting.

Hearing the gong, Kullonar sighs and decides to pick up the new scroll they found in this hole.
He's had enough of potions; give him something to read. "When we get a moment, friends, I have a pack full of potions and such for which we need to discover their use. Meaning, we need some tasters who are not afraid to be turned into something...unnatural."

Kullonar will open the scroll and see if he can discern its use.

To Bruno's mind the only way one could do badly in a fight is to be killed or harmed beyond healing and since they managed to get through the fight not only without such damage coming to anyone or accidently doing such damage to each other, things had gone quite well.

Putting the empty flask of healing back in his satchel he turns to Kullonar as the Brother of the Cudgel examines the scroll, "Anything useful?"

Bruno had been so focused on the scroll the half-orc had picked up he missed the words he had spoken, but Myrrick's helped his brain catch up, "Are we sure that such experimentation might be better done someplace outside of a barrow? Accidently poisoning ourselves or worse is much more easily dealt with if we don't have to worry about ghasts or worse appearing out of nowhere."

The dark magic that holds them together no doubt also gives them some senses. That's why it's important to remember that when we battle these abominations, we are only indirectly fighting the corpse of a living thing. We are directly battling those dark forces which manifest it in the first place. If you forget that, you do not serve the god's purpose in bringing us here."

The residual stench is starting to get to the party. Selene in particular, having been nearly overcome, feels quite woozy. There are a couple of you who have mastered the stench, but even they don't wish to linger.

After the gong went off, a certain urgency falls upon you. Gildan, with wise words, points out the nature of darkness and evil, and how the corruption lingers despite fire and magic.

You have some decisions to make. Somewhere in the vale is a brooding Mogens. You get the sense that he is biding for the right time to strike.

Of course, there is still the opening where the big baddie came through. It seems a hollow where the bones once hid the passage.

What would you like to do?

He pauses, "I suppose I could also ask for Moradin's guidance. I shall ask whether we shall meet foes as great or greater if we pass into this hollow. If not, then I think we should rest and then return to the vale on the morrow."

Moving to the bone draped entry to the hollow that the baddies came through he puts a hand on the bones and meditates asking: Will passing into this hollow lead us to greater danger than we have faced so far within this barrow?

Dugger could only shrug with the call to head back in rest up, who could argue with the wisdom of the dwarves.

"So assuming that the gong thing done gone an woke up the rest of the undead to our present,  should we rethink our tactics for our return?

Holy water will cause harm to the undead, will fire do much of the same? I can help set up some traps for them.  Seems that when they come at us there is no hesitation, perhaps we could use that to our advantage in some way.  If we had them give chase we could lure a bunch of them in to a kill box of sorts.

Say if we were to draw them into chasing us into one of the burrows that has  a entrance and exit we could have them chase after us funneling them into one end of the burrow and then sealing the other end to lock them in.  From there we could either deal with them or lock them away from causing us possible harm."

As they returned back to camp and Dugger brought up his suggestion Bruno begins to reply, but stops and slaps his forehead, "Wait... I did not actually tell you all what the Soul Forger told me in the augury, did I?

"I guess I really do need that rest.

"Forgive me, all, but this will answer your question, I think, Duggar. I shall try to recall exactly what was spoken unto me:

There are are still many tombs to be cleansed. For now, a rest would make sense for the weary. When you return to the vale, you should look for the tomb of Hjalmar. Seek the tomb on the southwestern slope. Beware the trap.

"From this I'd say that we should ignore the barrow we just left and its gong. Tomorrow let us start on the southwestern slope and, well, 'beware the trap'.'"

Meanwhile the enigma called Gildan brooded as he studied the surrounds.

There is a grim determination that surrounds the party that morning as they make there way back to vale. There is little to talk about; you know your mission. Every now and again someone speaks in soft tones. It almost seems profane to break the silence. At last, the party makes for the south western portion of the vale. It is silent. Even the gorecrows see fit to embrace the solemnity of the moment. Then, suddenly, they burst into flight, finally alighting upon and around what appears to be just another tomb. As the party draws near, the crows fly further up the valley and roost in the trees that first introduced the evil birds. Suddenly silent, they watch and seem to wait for the party to do something.

The party convenes near the tomb. It appears much the same as the other tombs that the party has explored. Dugger, sniffing around, does not find any hidden traps.

A couple things as the party enters the tomb: Ulrich - your detect evil is ubiquitous at this point. Just assume the entire surrounds are suffused with evil. You don't have to tell anyone. The party can feel the corruption in here.

Gregors is at the entrance. A mixture of fear and anger suffuses his face. "They are taunting us," he said. "

Let me know where your light sources are coming from and anything else that might be held.

Before you awaits a darkened passage. Good luck (as always).

Seer, I'm not intending to retcon, so I'll let you decide when I cast the Light spell I describe below.

Once I've cast Light my next intention is to cast use Gift of the Soul Forger [Bless for 10 rounds in 15x15 radius.

Bruno had held his tongue as the theological conversation between the paladin and cleric began and as they enter he pulls the hood of his cloak of his silvered helm and cast Light upon it.

When they find themselves before the statues immersed in the scent of rotten eggs he stands ready as Ulrich prods the statue and the keening wail is heard. He glances around nervously, short sword and shield at the ready, and in a low voice begins to speak a prayer in dwarven.

The party is fraught with tension. The statues continue to keen. The sound is nerve-wracking, putting everyone in short temper. And yet, there you still stand. Ahead is a passage that slides into darkness. What will the party do?

Kullonar pours a brightly colored potion onto the floor. Suddenly, a pinkish puddle manifests as a Great Dane. The dog is colored pink with yellow and orange striations that seem to move of their own accord. The dog itself is sturdy, and howls a challenge to the darkness.

<orange>OOC: I was hoping that Selene had Dispel Magic, because I can't get it yet and didn't recall you having it among your spells, so great move, Kullonar!!! Whew!</red>

When the Brother of the Cudgel asks for light Bruno makes certain the hood of his cloak is completely pulled back and watches curiously as he reads the parchment. When the spell is cast and the statue's curse is removed he breathes a sigh of relief, "Let's keep moving. And let's also be careful what we attack as we do."

The party makes it past the first hurdle. The keening wail is still, well, keening, but the volume is less by dint of proximity. It is dark here, though. The light spell only offers a five foot radius plus a fading circle that barely illuminates an additional 2.5' nimbus on the outside. The rest of the passage is pitch. There is very little detail from which you could discern anything.

Now that we are moving forward, Kullonar falls to the back alongside Gregors. Replacing his scroll, he instead grabs two vials. "Here, put these within easy reach," he says, handing the young fighter two vials of holy water. "Holy water is good for many things...especially undead things we will likely encounter in the next few minutes."
The Half-Orc gives Gregors a knowing nod and shakes his morningstar, turning occasionally to look behind them as they walk. "You wouldn't happen to have any torches would you?"

OOC: I didn't remember the scroll until I looked on my character sheet for something to aid Ulrich. Saw the spell on the scroll and figured, what the hell! :)

A fortuitous discovery. Well done, Kullonar.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you cautiously move forward, you find yourself a bit out of sorts - it's not easy moving in nearly complete darkness. Suddenly, a voice calls out from fairly close proximity, "I see you, adventurers. I will give you one chance to turn back."

The speaker comes within the circle of the party's light. You are astonished by what you see. Standing before you is a human male carrying a large sword. He wears leather pants, but no shirt. What captures your gaze, however, is the hole where his heart should be.

Lifting up the great sword he carries, he makes ready to attack.

Kullonar and Gregors, having missed out on the action, approach the dead "man" and Kullonar takes his morningstar and with all his strength, smashes in the face/head of the body. He then unstoppers a flask of holy water..."You too, lad"... and pours it all over the the dead body.
Handing the empty flask to Gregors ("Stuff those back into my pack, lad."), he then begins to search the tomb. The sooner they exit this hole, the better.

As holy water was liberally sprinkled upon the man without a heart, a hissing sound ensues and a foul stench arises in a cloud. While noisome, it doesn't seem to adversely affect Kullonar or Gregors.

As for the surrounds, from where you encountered the statues, it's 50' to where you slaughtered the man with no heart. With some light, you can see the following:

O3. THE GREAT AND TERRIBLE HALL: Passing
through the veil of darkness, intrepid
adventurers will enter a great hall. The walls
and floor are fashioned from glossy black stone.
Great pillars, each individually forged to depict
naked and tormented souls piled atop one

Horrific chandeliers of bone hang from the
ceiling, dimly glowing with a hellish green ghostlight.
This area exudes a palpable sense of evil. The

To Bruno the place is horrible, but given what they have seen and sensed since entering this barrow it is at least expected. Indeed, given the variety of awfulness they have experienced in all of the polluted barrows they have entered it is somewhat worse, but... How does one measure?

In response to Ulrich he shrugs, "Well, whether we enter actual hell or some place that suits someone's version of it we wouldn't be here if it wasn't to cleanse it."

He pauses, "And enough of the doomsaying, dammit!"

Looking around the party, "If we fall, we fall heroes as our brothers, Ukko and Zan did, because we're getting the job done. Let's do this work with full hearts and high spirits, because even if you're not religiously-minded we're the company that has been giving a proper sod-off to this vile Mogens for weeks. The chamber yawns out of reach of the party's light sources. Occasional odd sounds echo throughout this area, everything from what sounds like chittering laughter to loud crashing noises such as might be heard in a forge.

One more time: you descend the stairs. As you take the last step, you get a sense of a cavernous space that stretches in all directions. To the best of your knowledge, the stairs that you took sit on the far left side of the cavern, vault, whatever you want to call it. That is your starting point for this level.

ooc: those of you who have played the 'Against the Giants' campaign should recall the the depths of the caverns in the underdark. This has that same feel to it.

Bruno responds to Kullonar's call for healing, "Yes, please. I will gladly accept healing from you, Brother. My thanks!"

The respite provided by the Half Orc's rod is helpful, but Bruno has collected enough damage so far and the darkness before them offers such threat that he also pulls another potion of healing from his satchel and drinks it as well.

As he sighs in relief at the healing he has received, Bruno glances worriedly at Ulrich they move towards the Top Right Corner of the cavern and the paladin experiences his existential crisis, "This places is undoubtedly cursed, but I believe Hell is a bit deeper than we've gone so far (both physically and metaphysically), my friend."

OOC: For ease, I've rolled the Rod's healing myself:
11:30, Today: Bruno Rhunthane rolled 8 using 2d8.  Kullonar's Rod of CMW.

11:42, Today: Bruno Rhunthane rolled 3 using 1d8.  Potion of Healing.

Re: Tears of Sorrow and Laughter

Despite a brief lull as Bruno takes healing, Ulrich pushes forward. The stairwell on the first level recedes behind the party. The paladin pushes forward for about 50'. The light sources reflect off a niche some 10x10 in size.

As the party draws near, they find a throne atop a short flight of stairs. It has a similar consistency with the upper level - dark and wet and noisome. It seems constructed of some pallid stone, and decorated with onyx, malachite & volcanic glass. The whole is shaped to represent a tortured tree with the bough forming the seat and back. Serpents with ruby eyes are intertwined throughout the branches.

To either side of the throne are tapestries depicting the Land of Song falling beneath a calamitous horde of awful things. Triumphant over all is a tall, cloaked figure, not unlike the statue on the first level.

Bruno was taken aback by Uthecar's comment about 'other gods' given how helpful Moradin has been to them, but it is not unusual for humans to think that only their gods are important. Then, when Kullonar suddenly moved forward and started smacking statues he was even more shocked.

With Selene's justified comment and Uthecar's words that followed, which seem strangely whiney to him, he is finally broken out of his state, "Didn't Uthecar's smacking statues when we entered this place cause enough problems?

"And we shall fight whatever we need to fight, wherever the fighting needs to be done, won't we Paladin?

"What are you all thinking?"

Pausing he looks around the room again, "Those stairs don't seem to lead to portals... That is strange, isn't it?"

He looks up to the ceiling to see if there is anything above the stairs.

Here's where the party is at: 2nd level

Ulrich shouted his position and waited for Bruno and company to join him on the landing at the far left, before heading left to right.

At the same time, Kullonar and Gregors moved ahead of the main force traveling from left to right.

As the main body of the party, led by Bruno, moves from left to right, they eventually catch up to the half-orc priest and Gregors. At this point you have traveled left to right for some 80' along the wall.

There, midway along the gallery, is a set of stairs that ascends some ten feet. Atop the stairway is a statue of similar make as the one the party discovered on the first level.

It is the only thing of interest.

Disappointed and disgruntled, Kullonar sighs and says, "Indeed they have...and the choice to move along, well, it doesn't really prove our faith in 'the gods' does it, brother. Go ahead and spike it shut...but your hammer blows will alert everything in here to our presence."
"Come Gregors," Kullonar turns around and walks back to the intersection and waits.

Seer, if I'm looking at the map (flipped upside down to make it easier to read, if Ulrich turned RIGHT that would have taken him to the door leading into Room 13, not Room 12...correct?

Bruno is taken aback by Kullonar's seemingly childish response to his suggestion, "Wait, man, before you stomp off, let us see if everyone agrees with me.

"Otherwise, if they don't, you'll miss a fight and be facing whatever powers our actions here awake whether it's the result of my hammer hammering spikes into the door or the undead behind it."

Before the Half-Orc can get too far he turns to the others, "Well, do you agree with me or no? If not, Lady Selene, you've been asked whether or not you have a Fireball spell available, do you?"

Dugger holds up his hand, "Don't be hammering spikes into the stone, way to noisy.  Here give me a couple of spikes and I'll see about getting them secured into place."

Taking the spikes he walked up to the door and got out his dagger, quickly sizing up the spikes size he stuck his dagger to the stone and started carving out small holes in the stone for the spikes to snugly fit into.  Making a nice fit for the spike to block off the door.

"You know what would be really handy would be to find a hidden pit to lure all of them skeletons into.  Would make dealing with them a much easier tasks"

Re: Tears of Sorrow and Laughter

Bruno ignores the noise concerns given the amount of noise they and the statues have made so far and how little reaction they have seen from the creatures in this burrow, but he did want to get everyone's response.

When Dugger sculpts the spikes into the floor he is somewhat skeptical assuming, so he moves forward to double check the Hafling's work.

As he is doing so Dugger and Ulrich have their exchange, which breaks the moment's tension for him. As he is bent down double-checking the spikes' security he doubles over, overwhelmed guffawing into his beard. Standing he wipes a tear from his left eye, "Uhhh... Yeah... We should get moving before we lose Kullonar."

OOC: Storyteller I'm presuming that one of my Dwarven abilities would give me the ability to make an appraisal of how well secured the door is (i.e., ability to detect moving walls, new underground construction, etc.). If I'm wrong, let me know.

Re: Tears of Sorrow and Laughter

OOC: Has more than a few rounds actually transpired, Seer?

Here's what's happened since Ulrich opened the door, Bruno suggested he close the door, and he did.

1. Bruno suggested we don't fight the undead and spike the door.
2. Kullonar made his statement of annoyance and turned to walk back to the intersection
3. Dugger spiked the door and Ulrich said a funny thing.
5. Bruno turned to follow Kullonar.
6. Myrrick and Gildan seemed to misread the situation or asked questions about what was on the other side of the door without stating an action.
7. Dugger asks Bruno and Kullonar a question about Turning Undead.

I may have missed something, but it seems as if we're not that far apart yet.

Bruno pauses when Duggar asks his question, "Well, they have to be presented the holy symbol, so they must 'see' it.

"That said, Turning is an art, if you will, in that not only are some creatures more difficult to Turn, but until a certain amount of power is granted by the gods some can't be Turned at all, and as one gains power the effect on lesser undead is certain, but on more the more powerful ones it isn't ever certain."

Looking around to the rest of the group, "Are we moving on or deciding to deal with the creatures in this room now?"

If Kullonar...

No - that's not the way it works. A cleric or priest must stand firm and brandish the holy symbal in the face of the offending undead. Trying to you use a wall or door as a shield of sorts smacks of cowardice. Even if the holy symbol is an actual shield, the priest would still be bound by the parameters of the turn.

Gildan: probably one or two segments, but don' be surprised if the turning attempt falters. I am going to adjudicate any turnings with a close eye.

The party bypasses the spiral stair case going down (I assume) If I'm correct, the party is leaving areas 11 & 12 behind for the time being. Some of you eager beavers had briefly pushed toward area 13 for a moment before retreating back to area 11.

Ulrich pushes forward and joins Kullonar, Gregors and Myrrick. Bruno also hovers, with Gildan nocking an arrow just in case. Selene waits patiently.

The room itself is a trapezoid of sorts, with a dangling passage that leads to the left. There are a pair of unlit braziers, massive, that hang from iron chains set in the ceiling. A tall chair of lacquered wood sits atop a small dais along the center of the north wall. A long, granite table is surrounded by stout chairs. Kullonar bypasses the closed door. Exhorting Gregors, he makes his way to the end of the passage and finds an intersection up toward the large chamber, and down toward elsewhere. It seems the party has a decision to make.

Re: Tears of Sorrow and Laughter

"Stand there and hold your flaming sword, Ulrich. Us 'foolhardy' wanderers will let you know when we find something worthy of your attention," Kullonar says standing at the crossway of the corridors.
"The large chamber from whence we first came is to the right. To the left, the corridor continues into darkness. There are some doors on the facing wall."

OOC: Okay, obviously I'm not making myself clear on what Kullonar intends to do...or it's just being ignored or displaced for something else. When we entered room 13, Seer gave the description:
quote:
The party enters room 13. Dugger initially halts everyone from entering, and looks around, not making a sound that even a mouse could hear. Once done, he indicates that all is clear.

A pair of skeletons stand motionless in the corner of the room.

To which I replied that Kullonar was going to try and light the braziers, even asking Gregors if he had any oil.
I got nothing on that, and Seer suggested we could check the left passage...which I assumed (wrongly) was the door leading to Room 14. Because standing in Room 13, that door would be on our left.
Now, I see that Seer meant the hallway leading to the Left (or West, I guess), hence his description of what I found down that corridor. And now we're back to my post above. (sigh)

Re: Tears of Sorrow and Laughter

Here is what I see from the gallery. I see a bunch of players doing their own thing without purpose. Push here, pull there without rhyme or reason. The last combat that had any coherence were the 3 ghasts.

You guys are circling around the interesting parts, and dicking around in the middle. Go somewhere, anywhere and find a combat.

Now, in fairness, I take some of the blame because I spent 10 days enjoying my vacation. That said, we are two weeks beyond that. Time to move on.

And again, you guys continue to ignore my suggestions, and most of you haven't even looked at the map, nor have you use the numbers on the map. I mean, shit, how much easier does it have to be?

Now, stop whining, pull your boot straps up and go fuck some bad guys up. And if you don't want to play anymore, let me know.

The party is already in room 13. That entire area has already been investigated, all the way out to the passage. Consider the Braziers lit.

The party has basically 3 choices:

1- go back the way you came.
2- the closed door
3- the left passageway that opens up to a broader corridor.

Bruno is uncertain, given what has happened so far when the party has interacted with the objects they have come across so far in this barrow,  that lighting anything is a good idea, but like others in this thread he didn’t really read Kullonar’s post well, so didn’t say anything. When Ulrich finally did do so he is relieved that nothing seems to happen as a result. That the added light doesn’t really seem to add anything to the scene he returns to his paranoia about things and follows the Paladin to the door.

Suddenly, what seems an emaciated dwarf comes int clear view and offers two mighty swings at Cuthbert's scion. Two hits with a massive battle axe certainly causes Kullonar to take stock.

I mean, shit. what's it going to take to get you guys situated & pointed in the right direction? You're here to kill shit, not tip toe quietly from danger. I'm going to start calling everyone Brave Sir Robin. You are all just Brave Sir Robins...

I'm going on a bender. When I get back from rehab you guys better have some organization. I'm serious. this was a great game. now it sucks.

I'm in room 14. With Dugger. Thought Bruno was there too. It's in the maps Bruno!

Dugger slowly sit up, with Ulrich still looming over him.  He gave him a smile, "ahhh, you do care.  I think I'm ok now."  He looked at his hand and twiddled his fingers.  "make sure to watch the edges of that chest, got a poisoned needle"

(made his save)

He got out his trusty dagger and carefully sliced off any remaining needles. "so, lets see if it was worth all that trouble"

Re: Tears of Sorrow and Laughter

The chest does have some value - 10 gems within a velvet bag Value indeterminate

There is a potion of extra healing

And a small box with 20 platinum and 100 gold.

Suddenly the party hears drums, ostensibly a warning given by the grey dwarf. The sounds of muster echo throughout the 2nd level.

Actions?

Alright, gang. Time to look at the map. If you don't use the map that you begged me for, the party will die. Take some time and look at the damn thing. And you know those funny little squiggly marks? The are room numbers. You can use them too. I am very Kind that way. Good luck.

I was looking at the map, that is how I know the room numbers! The map doesn't say 'undead horde' on it anywhere, Was asking which room the horde was in, I think it was 12, but  am uncertain.
