[02] Setting Information

Chicago

"Chicago happened slowly, like a migraine. First they were driving through countryside, then, imperceptibly, the occasional town became a low suburban sprawl, and the sprawl became the city."

   -Neil Gaiman

Fallen World Chicago is much like the real Chicago, and the only aberrations you would find are simply the darker atmosphere that permeates everything. The dark ichor of industrialization still runs through it's veins, bustling with cars, trains, and buildings that almost touch the sky. The same dirt and scum seems to creep on the outer brickwork of every building you pass by, and there is no peace and silence to be found at any hour of the day. Trash lines the gutters of every street in the form of both litter and the homeless population. It's not uncommon to hear gunshots or sirens in the distance at any hour, and all emergency services tend to run late when you count on them the most.

The Awakened have very few purchases of power in Chicago; it is not uncommon for a Mage to meet less than a dozen other Mages in their lifetime, including those in passing. While there are several cabals that are spread out, and even a Consilium that does gather when larger conflict arises, the majority of the Awakened in Chicago keep an extremely low profile.

[02] Setting Information

Themes & Moods

Fear Of The Unknown - There are many things that go bump in the night, and almost as many that go bump in the daylight if you are not careful. The pulled shades on every window are there to hide the horrors that the human mind can't fathom, and the steam that escapes from the manholes is more than just bursts of hot air. Things always exist outside of a Mage's vision, no matter what gifts have been provided to them, and the only knowledge they can count on is that they are not alone in this world.

Ignorance Of The Society - The Awakened are plenty familiar of themselves, but that is the best they can say for any of the Fallen World. They've heard the countless stories of ghouls that live in abandoned houses, the predators that stalk the night, and even the beasts that wear the faces of men. While many can have theories and anecdotes on what exists out there, the only information anyone can trust is that which they gain firsthand.

Evil In All Guises - While the Awakened are especially suited to handle the deeper threats that plague the city and the horrors that stalk through it's shadows, they must never discredit the darkness that even the most mundane of men hold in their hands. The darkness that sleeps in a person's heart is not selective about the gifts that they have been given, and only care about the will to carry out their dark deeds.

Walking With A Target - Seeing the supernal among the mundane is not a one-way mirror; when you gaze into the abyss, it gazes back at you, and touching the other side of the veil without caution can let others become aware of these gifts. Some will want you to help them. Some will want you to not help them. Worse yet, some will want to make sure you will not help anybody.
