Chap 0: the Meeting

Sven stood up and stretched. He had stared at the writing so long he almost forgot it was still daytime. As with the others, he couldnt quite make out the dialect of the writing, but he found some symbols that were familiar. What does this mean? He said out loud. Burning the symbols into a small piece of bark and storing it in a small skin bag with the others, he exited the mouth of the cave. He emerged into a dense forest underbrush surrounding the mouth of the cave. Picking his way through, he started North guided more from instincts than the small amount of sunlight he could see. He traveled for a bit before he was met by a curious sight. A wagon pulled by a mule was making it’s way through the thick underbrush at a snail’s place. Looking closer, Sven saw that the back of the wagon had many different types of covered crates, and boxes. There even seemed to be a few cages mixed in with the other boxes

Chap 0: the Meeting

Sven leaned on his long walking stick, examining the cart closely with his piercing blue eye. "Trappers?" he thought to himself, noticing the cages. He tried to appear as merely a tired old man, taking a rest in the middle of his trek as he subtly cast detect animal/plant in an attempt to discover what sort of live cargo the travelers might be hauling.

Chap 0: the Meeting

Success! He closes his eyes to concentrate and see's that there is some small game. Rabbits, squirrels, and other stuff were crouching in the corners and pacing the insides of the cages and crates. He concentrates harder and senses a few other animals. Bobcats, foxes, and something else.. He opens his eyes and realizes that the last animal isn't an animal at all! It is a small person!

Chap 0: the Meeting

Bànach shifts his position carefully in attempt to make as little noise as possible. He is in a crate. Sweat falls slowly down his forehead and cheeks. He smells raw poultry meat coming from a crate around him but he cannot place where exactly it was coming from. The scent makes him realize his hunger. He hopes his journey in this cramped space won't be much longer.

Sven's eye narrowed, as he softly whispered the spell Entangle in an attempt to stop the cart in it's tracks.

Chap 0: the Meeting

Roots sprung to life and started wrapping themselves around the wheels. After trying a little longer to coax the mule forward the driver gave up and got out of the cart to look at the wheels. Cursing under his breath he bent down and started to pull roots off from around the wheels completely oblivious to the old man near by.

Chap 0: the Meeting

Banache, still feeling tired, rubbed his eyes. He thought back to how he got in the cage. He had been enjoying a nice nap in the forest when he was suddenly grabbed by two people, relieved of his belongings, and thrown into a sack! After that they dragged him across the forest and threw him in this cage! thinking back he still felt like he was forgetting something. Oh! he suddenly remembered his rat! How could he have forgotten? His rat wasn't in the cage with him! He started to reach out with his mind to try to contact it when the wagon lurched to a stop

Chap 0: the Meeting

Banach's concentration stops when he feels the wagon's motion cease. Is this the end destination? Did the men throw him on here with a purpose? Is something sinister about to happen? He contemplates trying to escape, but considers it to be too risky. The wagon could be surrounded. He wouldn't have any tools to escape anyways. Banach decides to wait, and see what fate has in store for him. He will try and contact Duncan, his rat, in a more optimal environment. He slows his breathing and concentrates on listening. Maybe he will be able to hear something to prepare him for what is most certain to come.

Chap 0: the Meeting

Sven stood as still and calmly as a tree, apparently unnoticed by the driver of the cart. A smile creased his cheeks, seeing just how unobservant and trapped in their own world the city dwellers had become. He spoke.

"Lo, traveller. What brings you to this forest, and what is it you carry?"

Chap 0: the Meeting

With an obvious start, the traveler turned around quickly. "Ohhh thank the gods you are here! I have been trying to get through these woods for days. Do you happen to have any food, water, or at least point me which way is North? These godforsaken trees block the sun so much that I seem to be quite lost"

"That is all I needed to hear", the man said, "Im really sorry about this". He reached into his tunic and drew out a blowing horn. Taking a breath he blew into the horn which let out a low and loud sound. After the sound faded, he retrieved a sword from under a sheet in the wagon and  not keeping Sven out of his sight. started backing away from the wagon

Chap 0: the Meeting

Flying in a quick circle, the ravens found a cluster of 3 men coming from the North on horseback. There were also two coming from the South. They were riding clumsily in the forest and they wore full plate armor and bore a shield insignia with suns rays on their flags. They were about 500 meters away and closing fast.

Chap 0: the Meeting

Rattling a little bit the tops and sides lifted off the crates forming sticks and spearing the ground by the fallen man. Animals darted out and one very stiff gnome stood up and stretched as his cage melted around him. The rest of the cages formed a floating ball and began to weave a top and reinforce the sides of the spears in the ground. The man started wildly hacking with his sword (as much as he could in the confined area), chipping the cage a little big but not severing any of the wooden bars.

Chap 0: the Meeting

Bànach stands incredibly still. One part surprised and one part confused. He had heard the blow of the horn. He was confident he was outside some grand gate guarding a grand castle, alas he sees a poor looking man swinging foolishly at little bits of wood. The site is a spectacle that furthers his confusion. It takes Bànach a moment to realize the man, grand in stature, only feet away from where he is standing. Bànach's first instinct is to run and hide, but something indescribable causes him to remain still. Bànach attempts to read his aura by casting sense motive. He merely wants to know if this towering giant of a man is in good nature or bad nature.

Pulling up on the opposite side of the wagon as the two druids, 3 cavalry drew swords and stood at attention. The one on point sneered and spat "Welll look wut we got 'ere boys! A couple-a wizerd tryin to murder this innocent man. I knew dem folk ain't no good. Looks like we will haveta take em into brass for questioning and....possible.... imprisonment", at this they all laughed. "Assuming they are tried fairly, Id say you'll only get o few years in the pound. I would consider that a blessin' compared to the choices a couple-o yer friends have made". At this they all spat on the ground while an angry look came over their faces. "So come wit us or you'll haveta live with a bounty on yer 'eads fer the rest of yer pitiful days"

Banach surrenders to his gut feeling. He decides to bluff these men. "But noble men, you have it all wrong. You see, I am the owner of this cart, full of poultry meat, if I may add. I met this grey, silvered-eye man at my most recent stop and he was in needing of lift. I politely agreed and we were on our merry way, until this beast before us  attacked and tried to strip me of my goods. Certainly, you must believe me. I am but a forest gnome. Have we ever acted in such a violent way?"

Banache nervously waited for someone to say something. One of the quiet soldiers in front of the pair leaned toward the leader and said, "capm, mahaps we made a mistake?". The leader looked at him and scoffed. "We made a mistake? A mistake? We don make mistakes! Were you not wit us when we foun dat man to help us find dos forest wizards?
