And so Delilah and Tiffany took a stroll down the road and towards the corner of the street where the large moving van was parked. Their interest of course, wasn't the adults that might be there - moving the many brown boxes that were inside the van, but the presence of any kids.

And that's just what the found.

Standing on the lawn in the hot mid-day sun was a girl with fluffy bangs and huge glasses that made even Bradfords' look small in comparison. A true four-eyes. If Bradford was to be believed and Tiffany's dream was true, then this girl was supposed to be 'trouble.'

She was taking practice swings with a baseball bat as if she was planning to hit a home-run deep into the bleachers of an imaginary baseball field. When she noticed that Delilah and Tiffany were approaching, she stopped and put the thick end of the baseball bat against the green grass, saying nothing as they approached.

A gust of wind made the dandelions rustle gently, a welcome reprieve to the heat.

Delilah walked alongside Tiffany, but as she saw the new girl, she strode forward trying to edge ahead. Her eyes narrowed as she sized the new girl up. The glasses were an easy target. Delilah watched for a real chunk in the armor.

You could learn a lot about a kid on moving day. Who their parents were. What they did. If they even had both parents or if they'd been dumped onto relatives. If they were rich or poor. A hundred little boxes to tick off on the rankings of popularity.

Penelope was totally geeky. Had to be with those coke bottles on her face. And she was probably rich, if she lived in this fancy-pants neighborhood. Baseball bat? She probably thought she was tough, or one of the boys. Worse case scenario, she was actually good.

She watched adults tote furniture indoors for a moment, then turned that same flat gaze on Penelope. Until the girl proved herself, she was just as important as the coffee table or washing machine.

"I'm Delilah Gray. State champion gymnast. This is Tiffany. Tri-county science fair champ, ranked spelling bee master. If you think you've met anyone smarter, you're probably too dumb to know the difference. Who are you and why do your parents think you belong here?"

"I'm Penelope. I'm a super duper super star." The girl announced with a reedy, rat-like voice. "He--ha www." She laughed, an ugly donkey's laugh.


She took a swing of the bat. It whusshed through the air. The effect did not intimidate Delilah in the slightest, even though it was meant to. Tiffany however, took several steps backward.

"I like to break stuff.  He..ha...hawww!"

Delilah's eyes followed the arc of the bat. For a sickening moment, she thought it was going to crack her head open. But she had to hold still. Show no fear.

"Oh yeah? Well, maybe I know some stuff you can break. I think we're gonna be good friends, Penny."

Penelope gave another donkey chuckle, bucked-teeth sticking out in a slight over-bite.

"Breakin' stuff. We're gonna be alright, yeah." Penelope agreed, nodding her head. "He--ha www."

"Six bucks and my right nut says we're gonna break a whole 'lot of stuff before the summer ends. I had to spend all summer in summer school before I moved here. And I'm all tired of school. Stupid teachers. Stupid books."

"You ever break anything?"

"right nut?"

Delilah giggled. "Relax, Tiff. It's just a joke."

Not that she could explain the joke. This was the sort of potty mouth humor that Roger loved. Delilah wasn't exactly sure what a nut was or why it made adults so upset to hear, but that was the best part. It was such an easy way to be mischievous.

She turned back to Penelope. "I don't break alotta things. Records, mostly. But I had friends who did. What's summer school? Tiffany, how come you don't go to school in the summer? Wouldn't you get, like, extra smart?"

"Summer school is for kids that fail. I'm advanced." Tiffany explained with a haughtiness that seemed to make Penelope, the new girl, smile.

"I'm actually a grad ahead in math."

"I was in summer school because I fayled math." Penelope confirmed, with her strange voice.

"But, if your ahead in math, you must have done well last year on all the tests." She speculated, looking at Tiffany to see if it was true.

"I got A's on all of the tests except the final one. I was sick that day, and wasn't feeling good, so I got a B."

"A Bee!?" Penelope said out loud, feigning shock. "He---Heee---hawww!" She laughed, leaning onto the baseball bat to support herself from laughing so hard.

"That's not very advanced!" She mocked.

"I AM advanced." Tiffany retorted, clearly getting angry.

"He---Heee---hawww!" Penelope laughed.

"No you're not. A 'B', that's not very advanced!" She mocked again.

"I AM ADVANCED!" Tiffany yelled, taking a step forward, right up into Penelope's space.

"He---Heee---hawww!" Penelope continued to laugh, not bothered by the signal of growing anger and aggression.

That's when Tiffany pushed Penelope with enough force to push the girl over. She fell down onto the grass her butt hitting the ground, the baseball bat falling to her side.

Penelope's face was one of shock. All the laughter was gone. Then she raised her head, looked up at Tiffany from the ground, and a cloud of anger formed on her face.

Penelope's left hand reached out and grabbed the baseball bat...

"You're gonna regret that..." Penelope said with gritted teeth as she got up.

Delilah felt the spotlight drift away and she did not like it.

"Knock it off!" She glared at the two girls. "Before her parents see us."

Tiffany was cowed into submission. Penelope was still glaring at Tiffany. But both girls did nothing further. They were frozen in time.

Delilah clearly had regained control. Order had been imposed.

Delilah looked to the moving truck, then to the front windows of Penelope's new home. She wasn't really checking to see if the adults had noticed. She just wanted to be sure the girls would shut up on command.

"Okay. I don't think anyone noticed."

Delilah reached out to Penelope.

"We can show you around. And find something fun. But you two can't go around fighting, or else we'll all get in trouble. Deal?"

"I just wanna have fun." Penelope responded, still giving Tiffany the evil eye.

"And I walked around the neighborhood just once. Instead of you showing me, I want to show you some things that I think might be fun." Penelope responded, reversing the tables. Also, Delilah noted there was a sense of mischievousness to her voice.

"I'm a lover not a fighter. He---hawwww-hee!" She laughed at her own quoted phrase. Delilah had heard the phrase before, but couldn't place where she had heard it. "I seriously don't want to fight though. I just want to have fun." Penelope clarified.

"So, can I show you the fun places? He---hawwww-hee!" the laughter at the end coming out like braying donkey.

"Yeah! Let's go! You coming, Tiffany?"

Delilah looked back at the touchy little brainiac.

Tiffany was busy brushing the dirt from her clothing when she looked up.

"Alright." She said, suspiciously. "Let's go explore. I'm the official navigator." She proclaimed, as if taking the most important title that could be thought of.
