Sara: Dad's Thoughts About The Neighborhood

Some time later after waking up and going to school, Sara sat at the dinner table with her Dad. As usual, Mom wasn't home. She was off doing work-related things, though what those things were, besides involving movies, Sara was never filled on the specific details. She didn't, in fact, even know the specific building that Mom worked at.

In front of Sara was a piece of white bread and a bowl of tomato soup. Dad sat across the table from here.

"So, have you heard anything about these kids?" Dad asked Sara, spoon clinking against the inside of his own soup bowl as he ate. "I read in the newspaper that some kids are missing. They friends of yours?" Dad wasn't alarmed. It seemed that he was asking with half interest, his eye wandering over the other headlines in the local newspaper laid out before him on the table.

Sara cringed at the tomato soup. "What sort of kids?" she asked, without looking up from it. "I mean, I guess I might've known some of them."

"Yeah?" Dad said, only half-interested in what Sara said. "What happened to them? They get found?" He said. He turned the page, looking at the sports page now, thumb and forefinger rubbing the inky corner of the paper to get a better grip.

Dad put the paper down with a bored look on his face, attention now turning more to Sara.

“So. You’ve got a decision to make. Remember that day you had to stay in the car and then I took you to the Warehouse with that guy?”

Sara: Dad's Thoughts About The Neighborhood

“Stop being a smart ass.” Dad said, voice a little annoyed now.

“You know what I mean and what we're talking about. You want to learn how  your old man makes a living? How he puts food on the table while your Mom is out making her phony acting career? You want to be a part of the real world of what your old man does or do you want to stay a kid?”

"There, my wallet is in my coat. You see where I put it? I'm asking because I want you to try to take it from me. Pretend as if I don't know that you're trying to steal it. Like you're in a crowd. Like we both are."

Sara's hand swooped out in a quick, snatching manner drawing the wallet out and into her person with one, rapid movement of her wrist.

Dad raised an eyebrow.

"That's.....good." Dad said surprised. "That will work most of the time. But not all of the time. If you rely too much on speed, then sometimes you'll get caught."

"I can tell you a trick. But you've got to listen."
He said, as if he was bringing out into the open that kids don't usually listen. That kids are too energetic or that Sara was too much of a kid and so listening would be hard for her unless she expressly consented to it.

“I want to talk to you about Sara, I’m really worried about her. I think she’s kind of been behaving really bad. I’m really worried that she’ll get herself in trouble. Also with what’s been going on—kids disappearing, it’s crazy. I think we need to either sit her down and talk to her, or try to get her involved in something like the church or maybe sports or something. Something that will keep her focused and out of trouble.” Mom said

"Well, I'm going to take her to the doctor anyway. You know Suzy? That friend of mine? She said she knows a good psychologist that works with kids. Remember I told you how we were worried about her since the move into town? Well the psychologist knows how to deal with kids and he can talk to Sara. You know she's been doing things around the neighborhood?

Vandalism."
Mom said. "One of the neighbors called the other day and said so. He saw Sara breaking things or something. He left a message on the answering machine."
