The Bunker Hill... ...And Beyond
With the team finishing their greetings, everyone returned to their quarters to collect their bags and belongings. Scuttlebutt had it that the marines would be shipping out soon, so most were ready to go.

The line to board the B-Hill, as it was called, was long. The crew was already aboard and preparing for departure. The crowd consisted mostly of marines, Spacy special forces, pilots... Officers and enlisted alike.

The humans seeing the ship couldn't help but be impressed. Though not large, especially by Zentraedi, they had to be impressed. It was one of Humanity's first, and entirely Terrestrial built deep space ships. It was not the moon, or even Mars Base; it was leaving an entirely alien planet. Destination: some place that was barely explored. It was entirely possible their footprints would be on soil untouched by life.

Boarding the ship took a good half hour. Everyone had bags so that caused that line to drag a bit. The Officers of the deck returned salutes and an enlisted man directed to their quarters. As it turned out, the team was billeted in the same hallway along the ship. Nearby was a small kitchen for those wanting to cook, and a modest, but comfortable lounge fitted out with sofas and chairs and some nice AV equipment. At the end of the room sat a conference table, large enough for the team. Clearly, the ship was designed with special forces in mind.

Each were given key cards to a PT room, and to the ship's galley. Officers could eat in a wardroom, if they wanted. In the kitchen, they found a deluxe coffee, espresso, latte machine was available. A microwave was offered, as was a small stove and a refrigerator.

The rooms themselves were spartan, with a writing desk w/computer, three wardrobes, and three racks. A look at their phones took them to the ship's own website. It had hole assignments for each team member.

As CO, Lt. Gowdey rated a room with his sergeant, Thompson. Aviators Roberts and Ste. Croix were paired together along with Ashley. Tanusha and Rhea both drew quarters together.

Once bags were unpacked, the Captain came over the PA: "Attention Spacers and Marines... Prepare for departure in 5 minutes."

I spend my time immediately reviewing all 201 files on each member, pshyc evals, prior Co recommendations, and very carefully looking at dicipline records.

Fuck.  Seeing who her bunk assignment was with Ash was less than pleased.  Great a bunch of flyboys.  Well, fly girls.  In her experience they were a bunch of glory hounds that thought the rest of the Corps were there just to support them.  Sure we need them around, but they aren't the be all end all of the Corps.

Taking the filigree teak box out of the top of her ruck she tossed it on top of her bunk as a minor distraction for taking out the wrapped bottles and putting them in the back of a drawer temporarily.  Just taking out a pair of fatigues and her Class A's along with a small toiletry kit.

Ashley checked her computer to make sure her Cyclone and Silverback were listed as transferred over to the Bunker Hill, then checking to see if the mecha assigned to her team were transferred as well.  Composing a quick note to the CO,  Lt. Gowdey she didn't have a handle on just yet.  Some officers didn't look kindly on mustangs, hoping he wasn't one of them. She then took to composing a note to the team members,

Bringing up the jackets on the team's personnel, Ash sat down and looked at who the team was comprised of along with their various skill levels.

In reply to Ashley (msg # 3):

Gowdey sits reviewing all the files aqiured from each team member.  And thinks "this team will do nicely as long as the flyboys and knuckle draggers get their asses together as a squad.  Standard destroid tactics are not going to be viable here."

He creates a checklist of items to do when he receives a message from his XO. And responds promplty.  then sends the following to the full team. "good evening marines.  we have been called on again to do what we have been trained, belay that, live to do.  we are a group like no other in recent history, so i expect each of us to perform flawlessly and to the best of our abilities.  at 2100 hours in the break room i will hold a squad brief.  my XO and i will lay out our standing orders, expectations, and set up fire teams.  since none of you have worked together i will let each of you Marines know, when i give a time, if you are on time, you are late. be there 10 minutes early.   Hoorah, get some marines.

Then i check to ensure all my gear is stowed, uniform good, and my Veritechs are accounted for.

Gennie shuffled in not long after Ashley arrived. She greeted her with an "Oooh-rah." Then, after a moment, Gennie selected a rack by throwing her boonie on it. The Uniform of the Day seemed to be desert mcu's. Gen wore hers well. She removed her side-arm and stashed it in a locker in her wardrobe, followed by her deployment bag and armor. Then she unpacked her travel bag.

"Not that bad of a ship. I came in asleep aboard the QM-8550," it was a zentraedi ship left over from the first war. Most had been converted to micronian size, but were still called "Caves" or "Tombs" for the reason they were generally dark, dank and not the most pleasant places.

"It's got that new-ship smell, you know? Anyhow, like I said, I'm Gennie, and it's good to meet you. I hope I don't snore too loudly."

Just then, her phone buzzed, laughing as she realized it was Ashley. "No, I guess I don't need anything now. I've got my armour, sidearm, uniforms, flight suits, a rifle conversion kit, uhhh, my alpha, my cyclone... Boots... toiletries... survival kit... Do you think I need anything else?"

Alyssin ended up being a bit of a straggler, arriving about 10 minutes after Gennie did. Seeing a free bunk in the shared room, the Beta pilot tossed her seabag onto it then settled on the edge, offering a nod of greeting to her room-mates.

"Looking forward to this mission.. being the first boots on the ground in unknown space... exciting." Aly remarks, genuine excitement in her tone. Another nod to Gennie, before tilting her head a bit. "I understand you're the Alpha pilot? I'm hoping we'll get some time to practice coordination before we're thrown to the wolves."

Tanusha arrived at her quarters, expecting to see the Praxian, Rhea. Apparently, she boarded before her room mate. She selected a bed and stashed her items in the wardrobe. Tanusha found it funny that the two alien women got lodged together, but then looked at the facts. The other women's dorm was for officers, and this was for enlisted.

Over her bunk, she hung a poster of Lynn-Kaifun shooting lightning from one of his hands. The poster read, "Shao Pai Long." Like most Zentraedi, she had a love for human culture On the other wall, she placed a poster of Jim Morrison.

Finished unpacking, she sat on her bunk waiting for Rhea. When she arrived, she would greet her, "Welcome to the Alien Room."

In reply to Lt. Gowdey (msg # 4):

Promptly at 20:50 hrs, Lt Gowdey steps out of the hallway and into the breakroom.  After a brief moment, he removes some of the other enlisted men and officers.  Looking out at the bunch of Marines assembled, he says with a smile and obviously excited tone."Absoloute badasses, each end every one of you.  i dont think the fleet could have assembled a more qualified team.  lets not be too hasty to pin a bunch of ribbons on your chests yet people.  We are here to do our job, scout the Invid, and make it back safe.  My job is to make sure that happens.  With some of you, I may fail, but that is the life we signed up for.  I have a few standing orders: 1) True to our forfathers, NOBODY GETS LEFT BEHIND, NOBODY.  you may come home in a bag, but we will bring you home.  2) Everyone fights, dont do your job, and i will shoot you.  Marines dont quit, we may regroup, but we never quit.  3) Dont get emotional, follow your orders, but only question them if your fire team will get wiped out.  I will always back up and defend the actions of my team, so if tactical information changes the scope of mine or the XOs orders, you do what you must to carry out the mission and my standing orders. Our XO is a mustang, a damn good one, consider yourselves lucky to have her.  That brings us to #4) i dont give a flying fuck what race, ethnic background, or gender you are.  We all wear a uniform and we will do our jobs with our team, so get over your personal shit, if i have to get involved, consider it the first day in a life of pain, because i dont believe in a the brig."

Looking around at the faces of his Marines while giving his standing orders, he cant help but to trust he can make this elete group a distinguished unit.

"In a few minutes i will let our XO go over her expectations, but before i do, we will commence fire team training on the simulators in TacOps @ 06:30hrs.  Alpha team is myself, the doc, and the other destroid.  We are a sniper support element.  Recon team will be headed up by the XO. She will have lead over recon and the air support.   Since this type of tactics have not been used on such a small scale, our simulations will be centered on command and control elements.  Secondary, we will continue to sharpen our skills with one on one mecha combat simulations, and Invid wave/ swarm repelling simulations.  We MUST unite as a squad, or nobody makes it home."

Now with a very edgy look and a sharp but serious tone, he says,  "as soon as I have orders from above on our mission details the XO and I will brief you all on them.  XO, the floor is yours."

Gowdey steps back but continues to display his pride in the men and women assigned to him

Ashley was already in the breakroom eating when Gowdey entered.  Giving him a brief nod and finishing her meal, she quickly pulled her notepad out.  During his intro, she scribbled down a few things down and stood up once he was finished.

"Oorah sir!" Pausing for a moment for the inevitable replies, she continued. "I'm Lieutenant De La Rama Mangubat, or as the Corps prefers Lieutenant Mangubat rather than the full mouth full."  Saying it with a smile.  "Anyway, I'm your XO and in the lead of our recon section. Unless there is an issue with me, talk to me first before bringing up problems with LT. Gowdey. He's got enough on his plate as it is.  I started off my service enlisted and in South America during the uprisings.  My main focus is Asym, or guerrilla, warfare, so what I really need is information.  Anything you see or hear when on the mission let me know.  As it stands, we know next to nothing about our enemy other than they seem to hate anything that isn't Invid."

"Personally, I'm a pointman.  I know demo, weapons, armor, and Hand to Hand like the back of my hand.  Also good with traps, mines, tactics, surveillance, tracking, survival, Intel, engineering, some minor electronics, salvage, and ECM.  I was a drill instructor for a bit when STORM started up.  As time permits I'll happily teach you what I know, including after hours.  More importantly, I want to learn from you.  Anything you know that you can teach me only makes me a better Marine."

In reply to Ashley (msg # 9):

Gennie arrived early, even before the top brass. As people started to arrive, there was a knock at the door. "Pizza for a Lt. Ste Croix?" an enlisted mess-tech said. To give the illusion of "home" several chow halls would deliver pizza for a modest fee. Morale was important when troops were trillions of miles from home.

The aviator looked over the pizza, then paid, giving the mess-tech a tip. "Okay, we have three large pies, one vegetarian with bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, basil, extra cheese and green olives. We have a pepperoni and a supreme, all New York style. Help yourselves."

Selecting two slices of the vegetarian, she splashed on a little olive oil and some sprinkle cheese and hot shit. Then she sat down, eating a few bites before calling, "Attention on Deck" when Gowdey and Ashley entered.

Once told to take her seat, she did so, continuing on her supper. When Gowdey began to speak, she pulled out a notebook, and took notes as to who the teams should be. It was difficult having an odd number of marines, but wondered if another teammate fell through. The two fighters with a scout mech was not a bad idea. Putting the corpsman with the CO, a battloid and a hovertank seemed like a good sniper squad. A scout vehicle providing ANGLICO was a good combination.

When given a chance to ask a question, she spoke up, "With the corpsman in A-squad, will we have a backup in B?

"Me? I'm a recon alpha pilot, but I can recon on foot just as well. Green belt in Semper-fu. I can do point, if needed, as well as FAC, coming from a VMAF (AW) background. Laser target designation, optics, intel analysis, ECM, iron hand. All environment: SEAL&S.

She was a little disappointed that Rhea the Praxian was in the other squad, but she didn't know the team policy on fraternization. The Adm's Hunter had favored a "Be fruitful and multiply" policy. They would need a new generation of warriors if the campaign lasted. That's why they brought kids, too.

"Oh, and XO, you were asking for requests earlier... Would it be possible to requisition some vegetarian MRE's and some My Own Vegetarian Meals?"

In reply to Gennie (msg # 10):

Tanusha arrived just after the pizza, wearing a black recon beanie and desert MCU's. She'd had pizza before, but just the regular marine chow hall kind, with sweaty crust. This looked and smelled fantastic! "I like pepperoni," she said, as she grabbed two slices, and some garlic butter dip.

The Meltran listened to the discussion closely, nodding. "Yes, anyone who has first aid or paramedic treatment will be appreciated as a backup medic. I'd be happy to teach more to them, or to you, Lt. Mangubat, or anyone else for that matter."

She remembered her headgear and felt a little self conscious. It's what she usually wore in STORM. "What about covers, sir? We do recon beanies, 8-point or boonies?" Beanies were usually not worn during the daytime. It was a trivial question, but every boss had his own grooming standard. "Are desert MCU's are the uniform of the day?"

After boarding the Bunker Hill, Thompson quickly and methodically stows away his gear and heads to the breakroom.

During the briefing one thought dominates his mind:  Of course the corpsman is a Zentraedi...  I just better make sure I don't get injured, so I don't have to deal with that scum.

After the briefing is over, Thompson replies, "Recon is my bread and butter, sir.  I'm itchin' to do my job and find the best place to poke the bear!"

Rhea looked uncomfortable for a moment when she was greeted with the words "welcome to the alien room," going even so far as to avert her eyes for a moment.

Her Praxian lineage wasn't common knowledge outside of the people that read her service record, and she kept it to herself among her fellow marines. There were, of course, several reasons for that, not the least of which was that quite a few of her Praxian sister's hated her.

"Um..." She shrugged awkwardly. "I could be a human."

It was lame, and halfheartedly offered. Her normal bubbly attitude was suppressed as she stowed her gear. She didn't have much--less than most, taking almost no time to put her things away.

Rhea spent some time in her room, coming to grips with the fact that it was a small ship and everyone was going to know what she was before long. Human ships were like that. Word traveled faster than spacefold on a ship.

By the time she arrived for the pizza, she was somewhat back to her bubbly self but quietly ate and watched everyone around her.

"Supermodels, with one name that are asskickers? They come in two types, Meltrandi and Praxians. Don't be self conscious. There's some bigots among humans, but most are pretty friendly. Watch out for that ginger pilot, Ste. Croix. She was looking at you a little extra friendly."

She spent some time unpacking, then headed to the meeting.

After arriving on the Bunker Hill Lieutenant Roberts checked on her berthing assignment, only briefly stopping in to stow her gear by leaving it in a haphazard pile on her bunk. A quick jog later has her arriving at the briefing room, the last to arrive once again. Dammit, I feel so out of sync..

After sketching a quick but sharp salute to the XO and CO of the unit, Alyssin moved to quietly sit, taking in what was going on while reaching for a slice of the supreme pizza, trying not to drool too much.

As Lieutenant Gowdey begins to speak Alyssin pulls out a PDA to take notes, groaning inwardly a bit at the early morning sim-time.. she'd much rather be logging some actual flight time. Still, it was better than the R&R she'd been on prior to the new assignment.

Once the briefing had wrapped up, and people began talking about their skills, the Beta pilot settled back a bit to assimilate the information being given, though once her turn comes around she leans forward once more.

"CAS and SERE training for me. I like to fly, especially those big Betas but I can saddle up on anything with wings really." she states in a succinct manner. "Pretty straight forward.. I guess I'll be providing the big guns in the air." the blonde pilot adds in with a little shrug.

Once the briefing was over, Aly scooped up a couple more pizza slices in a piece of paper towel before heading back to her shared berth; with one foot she nudges her seabag off the bunk onto the floor before flopping down onto it, squirming a bit to get comfortable.

Gennie smiled to Roberts. "I guess you're my partner then. I'm 2nd Lt. Ste. Croix, but everyone calls me Gennie. (Pronounced Jeanie). I'm a snoop and shutterbug, and play the music when we face Zentraedi or Masters, or anyone else with a radar based ADN. If we go to ground, I can handle a cyclone, but I think most aviators can. Anyhow, I'm from Quebec. Both my parents were pilots in the CF. My father flew a CF-18, and my mum was a flight nurse " She smiled to Roberts and offered her an airplane bottle of Capt. Morgan, then offered one to Mugatbat. She had a small bottle of fruit punch for a mixer.

"What about you, Ashley? Where are you from?"

She put her phone into the media player and selected a song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSkQLGpnbzc
