The party gathers in the northern alcove making final preparations before ascending the magical shaft into the Fame of Tiamat's Inner Sanctrum, where they hope to put an end to Wyrmlord Kul's tyrannical macinations once and for all.
Elam, Eoni, and Vaxfar focus their arcane and divine energies and perform a string of complex syllables and gesticulations. Ovo is sheathed in magic aura upon magic aura upon magic aura. Then, Ovo drinks another potion, the exile dwarf's blood now positively churning with strength and vigor. Shmee offers the use of his magic scabbard to Laurenbeth, Sarah, and Vaxfar.
"Sneak in there and do what you do," the mercenary says to Sarah with a wink.
Finally, once all spells have been cast, Eoni casts a
silence spell on Ovo, plunging the party into complete and total silence. Now hearing nothing but the beating of their own hearts and the pulsing of blood through their bodies, the adventurers turn their attention toward the dark shaft...
Ovo goes up first, followed by Vaxfar, Laurenbeth, Rogar, Shmee, Sarah, Eoni, and finally, Elam. Grub remains at the bottom of the rope, on rear guard duty with Murph. He can't help but smile as he watches the party ascend the magical shaft. He waves farewell to each, whether they know it or not, as each party member slips into the bank of magical darkness. Finally, when Elam passes out of sight he turns his attention to Murph, laughs, and shares his private thoughts with his longtime companion.

The adventurers ascend the shaft, come out of the magic darkness, and rise yet still. The shaft rises 100 feet into a large chamber. Presumably, they clear the shaft and step off onto the adjoining floor, where they take in the Inner Sanctum's hellish grandeur...
Five brilliant geysers of crackling light the large room. Each of these sprays of liquescent light plume from the upturned maws of five draconic heads, themselves emerging on long necks from the edge of a low platform in the center of the room. The light gathers in the domed ceiling above, pooling in an upside-down lake of glowing energy that ripples like water and periodically drips long, stringy strands of thick light down on the ground below to flash and sizzle away instantly in a blast of acrid smoke. Strange, ghostly shapes seem to writhe and dance in the luminescent pool above--twisted, nightmarish fiends and grinning dragons with great glowing eyes.
The room itself is oval. The walls, inscribed from top to bottom with a scalelike pattern, arch upward gently, almost giving the chamber the appearance of being the inside of a giant egg. The pool of light shimmers fifty feet above, and only twenty feet below that, a five-foot-wide balcony encircles most of the room's perimeter. Five oval alcoves are arranged in the room's walls at this level, and looming in each one is a magnificent stone statue of one of the chromatic dragon kinds.
Standing atop the center pedestal, in the center of the room, is a seven-foot tall, half-dragon-half-hobgoblin, his body covered in brilliant blue scales and a magnificent horn jutting from his brow. He sports a beardlike growth of scales on his chin, and his eyes and teeth shimmer and dance with electricity as he stares into the pool above, his arms outreached in placation to the hellish portal. This can be none other than Wyrmlord Azarr Kul!
Flanking him to either side are the two erinyes the party encountered earlier. They are performing an intricate, profane dance, their wings bearing them aloft.
Wyrmlord Kul and the erinyes do not seem to have taken notice of the party yet--they are enraptured with their fell ritual.
The party is gathered around the dark shaft, plunged in magical silence, their quarry just 20 feet away!
This almost seems too good to be true...

Potion of Heroism (Ovo & Vaxfar): 90 minutes, +2 levels, +2d8 temp hit points, Attack/Save as 9th-level Dwarf and 8th-level Elf, respectively.
Striking (Ovo): 10 minutes, +d6 damage
Resist Fire (Ovo): 10 minutes, +3 saves vs heat-based magical or breath attacks. In addition, 1 point of damage is subtracted from each damage die dealt by a heat-based attack
Silence, 15 ft radius (Ovo): 120 minutes
Protection from Evil (Ovo): Cast by Eoni. 120 minutes, wards Ovo from mental control by evil creatures and from summoned creatures.
1 foot barrier creates +1 AC bonus to AC and a +1 save bonus
Prevents bodily contact by summoned creatures. This causes the natural weapon attacks of such creatures to fail and the creatures to recoil if such attacks require touching the warded creature. This does not prevent these creatures from attempting ranged attacks.
The protection against contact by summoned creatures ends if the warded creature makes an attack against or tries to force the barrier against the blocked creature.
Protection from Evil, 10 ft (those within 10 feet of Vaxfar): Cast by Vaxfar, 120 minutes, effects same as above.
Keen Edge (Laurenbeth, Sarah, Vaxfar): Critical threat range increased to 19-20. Max damage on a critical hit.
