Re: Chapter 1 - Ashes to Ashes

Garland healed the group as the Splatterman retreated and Constantine busied himself cutting away his summoned minions, striking a terrific blow to the ravenous little creature and leaving it cloven entirely in twain.

"Enough of this!" The Splatterman bellowed as he re-emerged, fury writ large on his features. He threw out hands again in arcane gestures and again unleashed magic missiles, but this time he did not target our heroes. Instead the destructive magic streaked towards the pitted sections of the wall where Darcon's spell had blasted away the letters of the bloody names haunt.

Shards of stone chipped and flew and the reverberations seemed to rock the chamber. The crumbling walls, already weakened by Darcon's magic, began to give way. There was a tremendous crashing and creaking of splitting timber and crumbling brick as the ceiling of the chamber began to collapse.

Constantine dove and Darcon was standing in a lucky spot, but Garland was crushed as a heavy beam struck him full across the shoulders and knocked him down. It came to rest pinning his leg, wedged under rubble from the ceiling.

The Splatterman's cackles echoed through the chamber as he drifted slowly forwards.

Garland channels and heals everyone for 10.

Constantine crits the rat near him and eviscerates it.

The Splatterman casts magic missile and targets the already partially destroyed walls where Darcon blasted away the bloody names haunt, causing a partial collapse in the chamber. Everyone rolls reflex saves, Darcon and Constantine pass but Garland fails. Garland takes 11 damage and is partially buried. You can act but you're immobile until you or someone else spends a standard action to dig you out. Constantine and Darcon take 5 damage and are not buried.

The collapse does also wipe out the remaining rat.

Darcon, because you were skipped this round you get an additional standard action next round.

Re: Chapter 1 - Ashes to Ashes

Staggering as he coughed and waved off the dust from around his face caused by the collapsed ceiling, Darcon noted the Shade advancing towards them. The mage quickly began moving towards the trapped Garland, making a quick gesture and uttering a mystic word and pointing at the Shade as he did so.

A ray of bright white light flashed from his stiffened fingers, but the dust in the room and the ethereal nature of the shade made it nearly impossible to aim, and the mage missed.

Cursing under his breath, Darcon reached Garland and using his staff as a lever attempted to remove the beam from atop the fallen cleric.

Garland stands, pushing a bolder over and stumbling for a moment before he glares at the spirit. Two fingers extend in a single point as light swirls around him and condences into a dagger floating above his fingers. "Holy goddess strike down this pitiful soul with your spiritual weapon!" he shouts before moving his hand in a slicing motion, sending the glowing dagger toward the spirit that nimbly sidesteps it.

Re: Chapter 1 - Ashes to Ashes

The Splatterman drifted inexorably forward through the falling clouds of dust and the crumbling remains of debris. He seemed hellbent, wild eyed, his ghostly form flickering even as he clung to the mortal plane by sheer, hateful will.

"You will not...best...me..." He glowered.

Constantine and Garland called down bow and spell, Darcon struck out wildly and then limped over to help Garland push the heavy beam off of himself. It splashed into the water and the mage hauled Garland to his feet.

"You will...die!" He lashed out at our heroes, his rage an desperation evident in his movements.

Re: Chapter 1 - Ashes to Ashes

Darcon and Constantine struck true, and although the spirit was able to shrug off the brunt of Darcon's attack Constantine's sent a reverberating shiver of positive energy through its ethereal form. The damage was not quite sufficient to dispel its evil presence, although its shifting and roiling form seemed to grow more and more indistinct.

The Splatterman cackled in stubborn defiance, perhaps realizing how close he was to his own final doom. He needed allies, and with an arcane gesture he summoned a hissing, writhing knot of venomous snakes at the feet of our heroes. The dread little beasts coiled and lashed about and, although one managed to sink fanged teeth into the leather of Constantine's boot, none of their attacks did any lasting damage to our heroes.

Re: Chapter 1 - Ashes to Ashes

The Splatterman was raving now, lashing out wildly with his magics, summoning whatever he could to get an edge and drifting towards our heroes with glowering malevolence.

"This prison is mine! I'll kill that bitch...I'll get out of here...I'll be the most...I'll keep...Grayyaaaah!"

Darcon slammed his staff down and a wave of energy washed over the spirit. It wasn't a tremendous strike, and a goodly portion of the crackling thunder washed through the ghost's ethereal form uselessly. But the creature was already tattered, his spiritual energy taxed to its utmost limit by the attacks levied against it.

"NO! NOOOOOO!" The Splatterman shrieked, a wail that seemed to drag on and on as his ghostly form shattered and dissipated into shower of eerie sparks.

A deep rumbling shook the prison and debris began to rain down from the ceiling. At that same instant a piercing wail reverberated through the upper floors.

Meanwhile the situation outside the prison was quickly getting out of hand.

Kendra, Father Grimburrow, Haephenus Gibs, all of our hero's allies could do nothing but watch the angry mob marching up the hill towards the prison, waving pitch forks and hay hooks, the angry murmur of their voices rising into a shouting cacophony. At their head marched the new sheriff, the man tasked with keeping order in Ravengro, with upholding the rule of law. His eyes were lit with murderous, zealous fire.

"Outsiders! Necromancers! String them up!"

Angry cries echoed through the prison courtyard.

Father Grimburrow tried to stand as the voice of reason, Alendru and Kendra appealed to the villager's better nature. But when one of the villagers stepped forwards to accuse Garland of consorting with dark powers and Enos knocked him down things quickly began to get out of hand. There was shouting and pushing. Blows were exchanged.

Gibs was down under a pile of villagers and Enos was knocked out, Father Gimburrow held at bay while the sheriff seized Kendra, waving his cudgel overhead and shouting about sweeping Ravengro clean of filth.

At that moment Darcon struck his final blow, deep below in the dungeon.

The tremor knocked some of the villagers down, but more than that it snapped them out of the moment. Like a cloak being drawn back the dark haze of suspicion, hostility, and anger seemed to lift from the mob. There were blinking stares, horrified looks as simple farmerfolk threw down the farm implements that they were using to threaten their friends and neighbors.

Sheriff Harlan tried impotently to gather their support again, but most were shifting uneasily as if only now realizing that they stood at the threshold of the infamously haunted Harrowstone. Then the keening wail rose from within, ghostly light shooting out of every window, and a general panic ensued. Frightened villagers began to flee down the hill towards the town.

The others were helping Enos to his feet but Kendra and Father Grimburrow exchanged a shocked look. They rushed into the prison.

Darcon's blow is juuuuust enough to reduce The Splatterman to 0 hitpoints. Congratulations on defeating the five infamous ghosts in the Haunting of Harrowstone!

"Thank you for the healing Garland, and yes, well done everyone. Still, I do not believe this is over, we do not know what the motives of the agents of the Whispering Way were, and which of them murdered the Professor. They still need to be brought to justice,"
he said to the others.

Standing upright, Darcon indicated then he was ready to join the others to go back outside and get some well earned rest.

Re: Chapter 1 - Ashes to Ashes

The massive tremor didn't repeat itself as our heroes made their way up and out of the dungeon, clambering up the collapsed elevator shaft and into the training room. As they were pulling up their gear Kendra and Father Grimburrow burst into the room.

"Did you hear that?" Kendra gibbered, motioning briefly for the others to follow as they hustled through the now quiet corridors towards the workshop where Vesorianna's ghost kept her vigil.

The spirit was as agitated as ever, alternately sobbing and laughing jubilantly.

"Thank you...thank you!" She blubbered, tears of joy rather than grief now rolling down her ghostly cheeks.

"You have...defeated them...cleansed this place...I...now I can finish my husband's work."

As she spoke the ancient warden's badge began to vibrate, grasped in her frail skeletal hand, and to glow with ghostly energy. A look of deep concentration came over Vesorianna's face and she hoovered closer to the floor, her hands steepled as if in prayer. For a long moment she seemed to be gathering her strength, and then with a cry a massive wave of holy energy burst forth from the badge and washed over our heroes. It expanded outwards, seeping through the walls, washing over every inch of the once cursed edifice. When it was over Vesorianna drew a shuddering breath. All that could be heard were the distant wails of evil spirits as they succumbed to her holy power.

A change came over Vesorianna as well. No longer was her wild hair windblown, her gown a charred and tattered mess. She appeared as she had in life, pale, sad, but resolute and lovely. The ghostly blue glow that had surrounded her resolved into a shimmering gold.

"I can...feel it. My work here...my time here is finished." She said, joy and sadness intermingled in her voice. Her mind seemed whole again and she bowed in gratitude.

"Thank you. Thank you. I will go now...I will go to await my beloved. But child, know this." She drifted down to lay a ghostly hand on Kendra's head.

"I watched as those dark men ripped my husband's soul from this place and bore it away. And I watched as their leader struck your father down with vile magics. Beware a dark mage. You will know him by his mark, his mouth, scarred and mutilated like the foul words that he incanted."

"Wait!" Kendra called out "Tell me more! Who was he! Where did they go! Tell me..."

But Vesorianna only smiled softly as she began to drift away, upwards and back, her form becoming more and more indistinct.

"Thank...youuuu..." Her last words drifted on the wind.

Kendra dropped to her knees, tears streaking her face, reaching out for the spirit as she vanished.

The wave of positive energy that washes over you has a lasting effect, granting you Vesorianna's Boon. You gain +1 to attack rolls and +1 damage against incorporeal foes.

The warden's badge is likewise infused with ghostly energy, functioning as a Gravewatch Pendant.

Now that you have some time to examine them you are also able to identify the gear that you dredged up from the pool in the dungeon, a +1 Longsword, a +1 Mithral Dagger, and a Pearl of Power I.

The curse on the spell book also resolves itself, the spellbook contains comprehend languages, dispel magic, false life, gust of wind, illusory script, levitate, mage armor, and magic missile.

He stops and thinks for a moment about writing a new paper on the events of Harrowstone, thinking at the very least that he should record their experiences for future generations.

He takes the pendant from the skeletal hands of Vessorianna's bones and places it in his bag, he tehn collects her bones and the bones of her husband with the intent to bury them both in the cemetary. Once done he stands and addresses everyone. Re: Chapter 1 - Ashes to Ashes

Even as the expanding aura of power from Vesorianna and the badge empowered them all and washed away the taint of evil upon the spellbook they had found in the prison, Darcon had no time to celebrate, for the spirit of the warden's wife was fading and offering her farewell.

The mage watched the interaction between Kendra and Vesorianna with sadness, before the warden's wife finally faded away triumphantly, her mission completed. The last bit of knowledge she had imparted was dark yet interesting, but now was not the time to disseminate it, so Darcon locked it in his mind for later. Suffice to say the mage suspected they had not seen the last of the Whispering Way, nor gotten justice for the murder of the Professor.

He chuckled at his companion's exuberance, and agreed to join Garland in his celebrations. "Indeed, celebrations are called for. Afterwards, we can restock our supplies and do some research before figuring out our next move."

Aside from the Whispering Way, which Darcon was most interested in now, they still had to fulfill the Professor's last wish of transporting his chest of books, or remaining with Kendra for a full month to ensure her safety.

"I believe she is content with following in the footsteps of her father Constantine and becoming a scholar of the arts arcane, or a sage,"
Darcon said to the paladin with a smile, sifting through the contents of the underwater discoveries made by Garland during the final battle.

Turning to regard Kendra he added, "Though I do believe the path of a mage would be more useful in these dark times my lady. I can offer my tutelage and teach you spells of the elements to both defend and attack, as well as spells of warding to keep those who would harm you at bay."

Re: Chapter 1 - Ashes to Ashes

There wasn't much of a crowd outside the prison when our heroes emerged, just Gibs, Enos, Alendru, and a dozen or so villagers whose curiosity had outweighed their terror at the storm of supernatural power that had dispersed the rest.

It was still enough to raise a ragged cheer and crowd in, clapping shoulders and shaking hands. It was a jubilant procession that made its way back into town, and by evening there was a festival air.

The goodwives turned out their cook pots and Zokar kept the Laughing Demon's ovens working all that afternoon. The friends that our heroes had made in town filtered in and out of the Lorrimor household, each calling with some pretense but really there to hear the tale of the prison.

Councilman Hearthmount sniffed, looked down his nose, and gave Sheriff Harlan a formal reprimand for failing to keep order. He didn't go further, or mention his place at the head of a lynch mob, but afterwards the two of them retreated back into his chambers to drink and sulk. Simply having them away from the festivities was as much as anyone could ask.

Ravengro was a suspicious, insular little community. Mistrustful of outsiders but fiercely loyal and protective of friends. And it was remarkable how quickly the distinction between 'outsiders' and 'friends' switched without the dark influence over the townsfolk.

Garland's feast soon included the whole town, packed into the Laughing Demon, jostling and laughing and passing wide platters of flaky bread and bowls of hearty stew from enormous cauldrons over the fireplace. Our heroes were forced to stand atop the tables and recount the ghost story at least a dozen times, to all the appropriate oohs, aahs, and shrieks.

The following weeks were an easy idyll, a look at life in Ravengro without the dark threat of the haunted prison looming over it. There were squabbles now and then, but it was largely a placid, easy break.

Kendra took to Constantine, Darcon, and Garland's tutelage like a fish to water. She had a sharp mind and a canny grasp for the conceptual and the obscure, and what skill she lacked with the rapier she made up for with enthusiasm.

One day a letter arrived for Darcon, a reply to the letter that he and Alendru had sent to the university.

Dear Mr. Ghoroven,

In regards to the rubbing that you and your colleague sent us, it does appear that your initial surmise was correct. The ritual was undoubtedly conducted with the aim to capture and restrain a spirit residing at the site. Given the specific nature of the incantation it appears that the ritual was crafted with a specific spirit in mind.

The runes themselves are fascinating, and predate the...

The remainder of the letter was very long and very technical, although Darcon found it fascinating, and was signed Montegaine Crowl, Professor of Antiquities, Lepidstadt University.

Another letter that Kendra received was interesting as well, a missive from Count Lucean Galdana, wishing her well and tendering the surprising offer to purchase her father's entire library. She declined politely but was flattered that he had thought of her.

Several days after Vesorianna's disappearance Kendra called everyone together in the kitchen.

"I can't thank you enough for everything that you've done for me, everything that you did for my father. I've learned so much from you over these past weeks. But my father's killer is still out there, and I feel as if I've just opened the door into my father's work.

I've been thinking a lot, about what my father would want, about what I want, and I've decided what I want to do.

When you leave I would like to travel with you to Lepidstadt, to the university there. My father taught there for years and I intend to enroll at the university to follow his work."
