Re: Chapter 2 - The Trial of the Beast

Constantine had considerable expertise in the nature of ghosts and the undead, but the particulars of this specter eluded him. It was Darcon who chimed in, stepping around the safety of the doorway and peering in at the spirit.

"The dark energy...the reports of other ghosts...it appears that this creature is the spawn of some greater undead. The Beast could not have done this, be wary for its dark master. Its touch is deadly, and mortal weapons will not harm it. Use magic, or weapons of enchantment! The only way to free the child from this tormented existence is to destroy this form."

Adrin acted decisively, sending whirling bolts into the whispy thing, but Cain exercised caution and drew protective enchantments about himself.

The malevolent child sprite seemed unconcerned with Adrin's attack, although it did fly farther back into the darkened church.

Adrin MM's for 13 damage.

Cain hits his AoO and does half damage due to the spirit's incorporeal nature.

Constantine makes a knowledge check but doesn't know anything relevant.

Darcon is NPC'd this round and makes a knowledge check, revealing some info about the creature.

The ghostly child moves back and ducks down behind the crates. Remember, you don't have line of sight or line of effect from the doorway while it's hiding. You'll need to gain vision of it before you can target it with spells.

Shade, Darcon, because you were skipped you get an additional standard action next round.

Feeling more confident with his magical protection, Cain steps forward, inviting the shade to try attacking him again. "Come on, try that again."

Step to l8, ready action to attack the wraith should he come into range. If he gets out his cover the rest of the party can blast him. If not, we will have to go to him I suppose.

Shade crept closer to the door, hands tingling with healing energy.  If someone was injured by the ghost's cold touch, she could at least heal them.  And if the ghost came within reach?  Well, it deserved the same!

OOC: Move to g12, readied action to go in and heal first badly-injured party member. If Broken Child comes within reach, go in and heal them instead!  Using healing hex, heals as cure moderate wounds (2d8+5), +3 touch attack if necessary, DC 15 Will save if needed.

Re: Chapter 2 - The Trial of the Beast

Our heroes moved into the dark church to deal with the giggling, burning little spirit. Some held in wary readiness, while Constantine and Adrin sent bolts energy and slashes of holy force into the creature.

It weathered their blows and sank two tiny, ghostly hands through Constantine's breastplate and into his flesh. He instantly felt the chill of death, and more. A sucking. A pulling. A draw on his very lifeforce that he resisted with every fiber of his being.

But while our heroes were focused on this spirt, a darker force approached.

The only warning that Shade had were twenty pinpricks of pain as Nooks claws shot out and latched into her shoulder. His back arched, his fur bristled, and he hissed in hatred and unnerved terror before yowling and darting out the door.

A moment later a dark void drifted ethereally through the chapel wall. The figure was a swirling cloud of glowing red eyes wreathed in dark flame that matched the smaller spirit, which began to prance and clap as this greater geist appeared. The sickly stench of decay filled the church along with the buzzing drone of a swarm of hornets.

It stretched out a desiccated hand, a long thin finger extended, and this clawed appendage it laid on Shade's chest just below the hollow of her throat like a caress. Icy chills shot through her, and mouthless the thing seemed to smile.

Shade moves up and preps to heal.

Constantine steps up to put the smack on the ghost for 10 damage.

Darcon moves into the church and casts disrupt undead, but misses.

The Broken Child's readied action triggers and it makes a touch attack against Constantine, and then with its regular action it makes a touch attack against Constantine. Constantine is hit twice and takes 7 negative energy damage. He also makes two fortitude saves, passes both, and suffers no other ill effects.

Brother Swarm emerges from the wall of the church and makes an attack against Shade. He hits and shade takes 2 negative energy damage. She makes a fortitude save, passes, suffers no other damage.

Shade and Cain, your readied actions are still ready and can be taken on your turn if you deem the triggers to be met.

Shade gasps as the undead floats through the wall at her, and tries to swipe back at it with hands charged with healing energy.  But the appearance had thrown her badly off-balance!  She quickly regrouped and moved the hell away from it, going next to Adrin and shaking a little with the surprise.

Re: Chapter 2 - The Trial of the Beast

Constantine stayed locked in combat with the ghost child while the remainder of our heroes pivoted to face this new threat.

Shade scrambled out of the way, still holding the healing magic that she had been unable to discharge. In her flight the dark being managed to grasp at her ankle. Where it a corporeal being it surely would have meant doom for the young witch, snared and dragged back towards the monster, but instead she felt its icy talons raking through her flesh like ice. Her leg went numb and leaden, and a feeling as if her very life force were being drawn out of her filled her with dread.

Cain leapt to her defense, laying down another barrier and striding fearlessly up to the spirit. Every red-flecked eye focused on him in an instant but the creature's attack bounced harmlessly off of his warding magics. There the buzzing increased until it sounded like an annoyed hiss, and the thing wafted backwards out through the wall just as Adrin and Darcon sent splashing arcs of energy after it.

Ok, got a question. Are furniture squares valid to end up standing in? If they are not, it's going to be tricky to reach the Broken Child with just a move action, at least without risking an AoO.

Re: Chapter 2 - The Trial of the Beast

Cain and Constantine stood shoulder to shoulder, facing off against the dark spirit. With twin cries they lunged forward, two blades piercing its ethereal form, and there was a tremor in the air as the power of their swords slashed downward. The thing held its form for another instant and then dissipated with a sigh, its spirit freed.

With the lesser spirit banished our heroes drew into a defensive posture, waiting for the greater darkness to hoover in through the walls of the chapel. Long minutes passed, and when it became evident that the greater wraith would not reappear they set about a search of the chapel.

The building was empty and dusty, most of the furniture carted off and the rest shrouded in sagging gray sheets that had once been white. Apart from the party's movements it didn't appear that any creatures of the physical plane had moved through the room for years. The pulpit was cracked, the altar had been removed, but there was a font at the head of the room that still held holy water after all this time. Apart from that the chapel was empty.

Cain and Constantine, you strike true and banish the Broken Child. If you wait around it doesn't appear that the other ghost is planning to trouble you further...yet.

In the font you find enough holy water to fill five vials.

Re: Chapter 2 - The Trial of the Beast

They quickly gathered the remaining holy water and Constantine led the way back out into the sunlight. The several hundred paces through the abandoned village were a tense journey as our heroes moved back to the carriage. They fanned out with Shade in the center, keeping their eyes peeled of the drifting spirit, but although they could not shake the unmistakable feeling of being watched they saw no hostile creatures.

Soon the cracked steeple of the abandoned village disappeared into the distance behind them.

The hour's journey back to Lepidstadt gave the team some time to discuss their findings, and at length they made their way through the commercial districts on the outskirts of the city to a trim windmill just where town was giving way to farming country. Adrin checked the address on the brief that he had been given, and confirmed on the small painted sign that this was the home of the Orzniov sisters.
