Re: Chapter 2 - The Trial of the Beast

Cain just shakes his head at the paladin's boundless sense of optimism. He draws his sword and fishes out a scroll out of a case, starting to cast another spell of protection.

This looks like the right moment to prebuff, so I'm starting with Shield.

He saw Cain casting a shield spell from his scroll so Adrin took the balm and anointed 5 sling bullets with it while he waited to see if Sir Constantine's challenge yielded any results.

OOC: what I said 5 bullets with the holy weapon balm. still see my question above

Re: Chapter 2 - The Trial of the Beast

Constantine called out and the tittering whispers faded away to silence. No sound could be heard from the root cellar, not the shuffling of ghostly feet, not the movements of spirits. There was no answer to his call, only silence reigned through the house.

Adrin, it's definitely dark enough in the house for the spirits to attack you.

"Can we get some light here?" Cain asks the party spellcasters as he reaches for the trapdoor.

Re: Chapter 2 - The Trial of the Beast

As our heroes anticipated, the descent into the root cellar was anything but peaceful. Adrin's shimmering coin landed in the small, earthen walled room and illuminated sagging shelves that still held cracked jars leaking rotting preserves. The floor was bare and wide, the stairs narrow, and the only illumination came from the magical glimmer of the coin.

Three wavering figures seemed to dance and flicker like shadows. Their malevolence wasn't muted in the slightest by the delighted shrieks that they sent up as Cain descended.

"You came to play with us! You came back to play with us!" They darted in and out, fingers probing, sliding off the hoovering ethereal barrier of his mystical armor and leaving an oily spiritual sheen.

"You took the others away. Dug them up! Dug and dug! Why not us? Why not us! Play with us too!"

A chill shot through him as a little finger grasped his ankle like the chill of the grave.

Re: Chapter 2 - The Trial of the Beast

Cain strikes at the nearest wraith before clicking the heels on his boots and retreating back up the stairs. "They're down there, all right. Three of them." He sounds a bit shaken as he starts rummaging in his case scroll once again.

Standard to attack BC1.
23:00, Today: Cain rolled 16,9 using 1d20+8,1d8+7.  Attack, damage.

Move (using acrobatics to avoid AoOs) to pull back to i8 (upper floor).
23:01, Today: Cain rolled 32 using 1d20+16.  Acrobatics.

Luckily their CMD sucks, but I'll need a bit more more buffing before going down again.

Re: Chapter 2 - The Trial of the Beast

Adrin chanted a spell and the 5 anointed sling bullets raised up out of his hands and levitated in space near him. One of them shot down at an angle at the wraith he could see, but the sudden jump up of Cain must have thrown his aim off and the hastily fired bullet ricocheted off the ground instead of passing through its target.

"step back, let them come to us..." he said.

For the love of... the only way I could miss this first attack would have been... a 1! Thanks RPOL die roller.

Action: cast telekinetic volley, fire one bullet at BC1... and nat 1
16:31, Today: Adrin Prescu rolled 19 using 1d20+18.  TK Volley vs BC3 (includes init bonus to attack).

Re: Chapter 2 - The Trial of the Beast

Cain slashed at one of the spirits and beat a hasty retreat up the stairs. The spirits followed, drifting up through the floor of the cellar. In the end they stopped half way through the floor, their arms clawing at our hero's ankles, their legs still floating in mid air. It was a terrifying sight, the black little phantoms protruding from the floorboards like ethereal, murderous mushrooms, trying to slip through our hero's defenses.

Little hands clamped onto Constantine and Adrin's calves, sending icy pain through them even as they maneuvered into a better position.

Cain hits BC1 for 9 damage, 4 since it's incorporeal.

Adrin misses.

The Broken Children move forward and attack. They hit Constantine and Adrin, who both fail their fortitude saves. Constantine takes 3 negative energy damage and 2 con drain. Adrin takes 1 negative energy damage and 1 con drain.

Because they are partially embedded in the floor the broken children currently have a cover bonus.

Shade, Constantine, because you were skipped you get an additional standard action next turn.

Adrin screamed as he felt the icy touch of the undead seep through him. In a panic he stepped back and called for a trio of magical darts that slammed into the wraith at his feet.

Even as the missiles flew into the creature his eyes flicked to the exit and he wanted to run but couldn't get past the creature. His holy sling bullets trailed along in his wake.

Move: 5' step to D7
Action: Cast Magic Missile - deal 11 force damage to BC2
13:10, Today: Adrin Prescu rolled 11 using 3d4+3.  Magic Missile.

Gah! Playing too much 5e in my home game. Casting defensively isn't a thing there, I forgot all about it. I had intended to move to G7, but I guess, yes I stepped back 5'

Cain abandons his scroll case and moves to help Adrin. "Hey, playtime's over!" He yells as he slashes down on the wraith clawing at them from the floor.

Moving to f9 e7. I'm guessing Adrin took a 5' step to d9 to avoid AoO before casting? I may have to adjust my move if that's not what happened.

Using my Daredevil Boots again. Now why couldn't I have rolled 20 for attack instead?

Attacking BC2. Again rolled 2 on damage. Bah.
22:36, Today: Cain rolled 19,9 using 1d20+9,1d8+7.  Attack, damage.

edit: Moving to e7 instead to better keep this thing of Adrin.

Shade feels some real fear at the appearance of these creatures, knowing the pain and deadly drain of their touch.  But she must try with whatever she has in her to put them back to rest!

Her first attempt to touch the one next to Cain missed, perhaps because of her reluctance to actually make contact with their frigid forms, but she steels herself for the second attempt and makes it, infusing it with positive energy it can't resist.  Then she moves back next to Constantine to keep her distance from their retaliation!

Re: Chapter 2 - The Trial of the Beast

The spirit children jumped up through the floors and rushed forward even as Adrin and Cain pulled back to the safe area illuminated by sunlight shining in through the open door. The giggling little wraiths took grasping swipes at them even as they sent slashes and stabs of magical energy coursing through the little creature.

Shade lashed out with a bundled fistful of positive energy, waving her hand vaguely through the spirit's incorporeal form. It screeched in discomfort and scuttled after her as she stepped back, reaching out to place a chilling finger on her forearm as she withdrew.

"Turnarounds' fair. Turnaround's fair!"

Adrin MMs for 11 damage.

Cain swings and hits for 9 damage, 4 vs incorporeal.

Constantine misses.

Shade waves her magic hands through BC1 for 12 damage.

The Broken children leap up through the floor and attack. They're standing on the floorboards now, and are no longer getting a cover bonus. Cain and Adrin dodge out of the way but Shade isn't so lucky, even with her mage armor. She passes her fortitude save though (barely), and takes 3 negative energy damage.

I've marked the boarded up windows on the map, as well as where the sun is shining through the open door.

Not sure if they will keep attacking someone in the light square. I hope not? Shade is pinned against the wall, so that's where I feel I can do the most good. Acrobatics to move to h8. Setting up flanking with Constantine (forgot to include that in my roll) and attacking BC1.

Cain and Constantine gave each other a nod, plunging blades forward into the sprite caught between them. At the same time Shade used their swift movements as cover to slip behind Constantine and deliver a jolt of energy to the ghost threatening his flank.

The success of their decisive movements was underscored by a dull 'thwock' as Adrin sent one of his blessed pellets thudding ineffectually into one of the boarded up windows. An apt enough weapon against a spirit, but less than effective against solid wood.

The ghosts themselves rushed in to the attack, but only the wraith harrying Shade had any success.
