Ok we have a nice party of four and a half! Let's start talking about your characters and how you might fit with each other. In general all of you will meet IC for the first time, but there could be exceptions. I'll still accept one or two more people, but we have enough to start. Luther Sorrel player, 1 post Fri 9 Sep 2016 at 21:11 |
I'll be playing Luther Sorrel, a former soldier who is a good-natured, cheerful and urbane fellow... most of the time. However, when his blood gets up from battle or stress he flies into a blackout berserker fury and has a complete personality shift into a bloodthirsty engine of heedless destruction. Witnesses to his past battle rampages dubbed this furious alter ego "the Bloody Cackler." It's kind of a Jekyll/Hyde, Bruce Banner/Hulk, Logen Ninefingers/the Bloody Nine kind of situation. So yeah, I'm a Barbarian (maybe a level of Fighter) and am looking to RP the rage all the way. He's going to be a damage-dealing monster in battle, but is also going to be reckless, insensible and capable of deeds that his sane self would find horrific. This will probably get the group in trouble at some point, but I'll try to steer his chaos toward fun rather than being disruptive. Luther would agree to a shock collar or some other means to keep the Cackler in check, if needed :) I have family visiting from out of town through Monday, so I might not be able to post a huge amount or get a nice character sheet finished until Tuesday.
Karliah Culver player, 1 post Sat 10 Sep 2016 at 00:55 |
I think that I could help with that. Karliah Culver here. I'll not reveal too much but my character will be a driven science-oriented fighter. And by science-oriented I of course mean fantasy-heavy steampunk style pseudoscience. You know, the best kind. Not my normal preferred play style, but I've been itching to try it out for fun. I look forward to gaming with you all.

Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Steampunk tesla taser is what I was thinking! Heck yeah, start inventing one of those :D Is anyone interested in working out some character connections in advance of the game? I kind of like having some bonds to encourage group cohesion. Doesn't have to be anything huge, but at least a little something so everyone's not a total stranger with no reason to talk to each other, you know? Maybe Luther owes Grail a couple gp from a random poker game or something :) Luther could be working as someone's footman/bodyguard/hired muscle/workshop assistant or something like that. If anyone was involved in any recent wars we could have run into each other there. This portrait is kind of dumb, now that I'm looking at it more. I'll keep looking for another, hehe. That's a fanart of Ander, one of my favorite Dragon Age characters. It is a little odd looking though. I always enjoy shared backgrounds as well. Perhaps we could work something out? Not sure what exactly though; Karliah is a bit of a rebel and mage-hating freedom fighter. Any religious background?
Mis'sha player, 1 post The curious snake girl Sat 10 Sep 2016 at 10:13 |
And I had to go to the gym this morning. Had to go lift brah. DO U EVEN LIFT BRAH!? *cough* I commend you Luther for your excellent reading. I finished the First Law trilogy somewhere earlier this year and thoroughly enjoyed it. Logen Nine-Fingers was an interesting character, although by the end I rather had seen they explored his condition instead of giving him the end he got. Oh well. But my favorite character is Sand dan Glokta by far. His caustic wit burrowed a red hot poker to my heart, ahh yes. Anyhow, I'll be playing Mis'sha, which is how mammals pronounce my snake girl's name. I couldn't ignore the chance to slither around and sniff around with my forked tongue when I saw the race. Mis'sha is a curious creature. I envision a young, intrepid girl explorer. Armed with map and notebook, she wishes to explore every nook and cranny of the world. She is naturally drawn to the ruins of old civilizations as well as libraries of any kind. She is learned but not bookish, always smiling and joking but not naive, completely absorbed in traveling and seeing new things. She's mostly in it for herself and to sate her endless curiosity. As soon as a place gets boring she is off again. She cares nothing for politics and those in power, as long as she can get around them to the next nugget of exploration. Furthermore she is addicted to the gathering of knowledge. And I mean really addicted. Not just interested, but she has a psychological urge to learn! True as any addict she will go to great lengths to satisfy her cravings even if she has to do things that are not within the confines of what is deemed acceptable. Also she makes no reservations about the dark and proscribed. Lore is lore, and it is there to be learned. But she is by no means evil. She just wants to learn and explore. That may also be her flaw; she wants the knowledge for itself, but doesn't really do anything with it. She could learn enough to become a wizard lord or a queen or alchemist or mechanist or... anything really, in her own right, but that's not her interest. She'd rather retire to a library one day and one day die writing her lore down in a tome then anything else. Physically appearance I thought out a little. She has an interesting blend of her savage origins and things picked up from civilization. She wears a studded leather armor of ingenious straps and belts that allows her serpentine form to move freely and she is adorned with feathers and all sorts of trinkets she gathered on her journeys; a string of coins on her wrist, a wooden plaque hanging from her necklace depicting Amshula right alongside a closed bronze locket and a rusting iron key. The material of her armor seems to be a blend of animal hide and metal straps, but fitted so it does not chafe or touch the areas of her body she normally moves across (or through) the ground with. Another interesting feature is her backpack, which seems to be made of snake leather. Interestingly she had it made from her own molted skin, causing it to have the same coloration and pattern as her own scaly skin. She would travel in a little wagon of wood with a canvas cover, padded with skins on the inside. In it there are a few waterproofed chests to carry her research in but mostly she can coil up in it and have her *insert beast of burden here* carry her to the next destination. This little wagon is more or less her home. She has everything there from cooking pots to road clearing tools on it. The inside is cozy and has all sorts of artifacts from her origin culture (fetishes, carvings, ritual items, feather totems, etc) as well as a bewildering range of trinkets and doodads she collected on her travels from wildly different origins. Her wagon (minus mounts). ![]() Her notebook (I imagine she keeps notes on everything, including sketches and detailed drawings of her finds. If I can play the explorer, she'd draw maps too with her cartography proficiency. ![]() I haven't been able to find a good picture for herself sadly.

Val'Cryel (Name change impending) here. As for character connections, I do know a bit about magic, and i am Attuned to electricity if your truly wanting that shock treatment. ;3 With the Noble Grail and his backup Luther, hustling is a good strategy. And a simple hustle gone wrong ending in a outraged fight would show you that while frail looking, Val is a capable warrior who blends quickness with power and precision. If you stick to your debts, Val wasn't looking to collect. Then again, he is on the search for powerful allies... Much like Karliah, he's got a grudge against wizards and witches, a particular one to be honest. Though he isn't an open rebel as that would draw too much attention. As for a connection to Mis'sha? well... If a creature who is a non-dead, living breathing vampire with what looks to be draconic blood (if the small sheen of what could be scales and the inborn attunement to magic would suggest) doesn't catch the attention of a curiosity hunter, then i'm not sure what will. ^.^

I was wondering if anyone would recognize the reference! Abercrombie is one of my favorite authors. You should check out the other standalone novels in the same setting and his recent short story collection. Not going to spoil anything, but there's some more Ninefingers amongst those if you weren't satisfied with his run in the First Law :) Since posting last night I'm thinking that Luther will have taken on a peaceful occupation to try to keep himself away from conflict forever so the Cackler doesn't show up again. He could be a librarian or some sort of menial scribe (he is literate, oddly enough for a barbarian!), which could be a connection for the smartypantses. His dream of a quiet retirement isn't going to work out though, now that the world is dying. Now he's going to need to bring his inner demon back just to survive!

[Private to GM: I don't mean to be presumptuous by offering you GMing advice, but if a player of mine gave me a character sheet with a 16-18 Con for their scholarly casters or Dexy ranged type characters I'd veto that real quick :P You wrote in the character creation thread that we ought to pick scores appropriate to our character concepts, so I think you're justified in reigning that in a bit. 18 Con is for the likes of Hercules or Leo DiCaprio in the Revenant, haha]

Qisstralya player, 1 post Slither softly... ...strike suddenly Mon 12 Sep 2016 at 21:55 |
Qisstralya is a Yaran Phobia, and scientist at heart ("scientist" here defined as "someone who loves to learn"); she's likely 16 or 17, and quite passionate about going out into the world and figuring out what the source of its current decent into decay is...and trying to figure out how to fix it. She's also a sorceress, and a Mystic one, at that; her innate magics have...guided her onto a path that hopefully leads toward the healing of the world. She also really enjoys sleeping and lounging in trees, and can often be found traveling through the upper canopy of whichever forest or jungle she finds herself in. She doesn't mind sleeping outside without any protection from nature (it's certainly not unusual to find her basking in the heat of a sun-warmed stone), but she does make sure that some form of protection is set which will alert and awaken her to danger. She tries not to be aloof, but sometimes its hard for her to pay attention to what people are talking about - especially if she has some puzzle to solve or has noticed something new or unusual. Also, she does have an animal companion - a smaller coral snake - with whom she often carries on...odd...conversations which consist primarily of hisses and tongue flicks. It seems less like a pet, and more like a favored companion/friend. When she's interacting with it is when she seems the most...emotional and attentive (to a conversational partner). I believe Mis'sha and I are going to have to figure out some background stuff, which I am eager to do. :-) [Private to The echo of the past: Is it permissible to use the Dragonmark Feat out of the UA: Eberron 1.1 update? http://dnd.wizards.com/article...rthed-arcana-eberron if you need the document :-) If so, which marks are allowed or encouraged? Mossou is a trade outpost, the people is kind of more tolerant since they are basically on the border with a couple of wizardoms, notably Bukhern beyond the mountains at the North. Inside the country it is connected with roads across the forests to better and bigger cities. As all places inside the free reigns, writing of any kind is forbidden. so you won't find any book let alone a library. But the realms north have libraries such as Bukhern, though it is heavily custodied, and a couple of small city-states ruled by wizards.

Hmm, smells... A lot of flavored pipe smoke (is it tobacco? I dunno!), probably some hay and less savory smells from the stable he slept in the night before, roasted meat, road dust and general medieval BO :P I gave that question a lot more thought than it probably deserved. The less we think of our characters' stenches the better! It's really hard to find a merchant that carries Eau d'Abyss, you know.

Seriously though, that 25 damage in a single hit was freacking impressive, Luther. It'll be awesome when you get to 5th and have an extra attack, and we go up against a boss or something with more HP. This message was last edited by the player at 01:29, Sat 08 Oct 2016.

I don't get an extra attack until level 6 because I multiclassed 1 into Fighter :( I have a few other ways to get an extra bonus action attack per turn in the meantime, though! I used up my bonus action to rage this turn though, so I didn't get one for the kill.

Definitely getting ahead of myself here, but if I get to level up three times then I'll probably take another Fighter level at 7 for that sweet, sweet Action Surge. That would bring me up to a potential 5 attacks in a round. I doubt that this maniac survives that long, though :)

You're gonna be using frenzied attack for your bonus action attack right? Yeah, unfortunately you can only do that once a day right? Because action surge does allow you to use another bonus action, which is why I was able to do what I just did. And don't worry Mis'sha; I'm excited to see what you can do outside of combat.

I have to go into a frenzied rage to get the unconditional extra bonus attack every round, which I didn't do this time. I can do that as often as I can rage, but I get a level of exhaustion after the rage. I'll save that one for extra angry rages :) This fight I need to kill something or crit to get the extra attack. In reply to Mis'sha (msg # 147): In my case I wanted to make my guy kind of a combat monster specifically to live up to his story I'm RPing! When all the nearby foes are dead the Cackler turns to whoever is closest and catches his eye first :( If you can get away, hide or give him a new target he'll leave you alone. Well, good thing in this game anything goes for sorcerer archetypes. You can use any third party/homebrewed material for your sorcerer. I just added one to the homebrewed material if you don't want to look further.

Actually I have a great recipe for triple-spice cupcakes! They may involve gunpowder. They may actually be exploding cupcakes. They may actually be used for assassinating wizard-lords. Lol. And Lavarian; you should check out Favored Soul or the Storm Sorcerer from unearthed Arcana. They're both pretty good. Here's the links, the first includes Favored Soul, and the second includes the Storm Sorcerer. https://dnd.wizards.com/articl...na/modifying-classes http://dnd.wizards.com/article...aterborne-adventures

Has anyone read the Powder Mage trilogy by Brian McClellan? I just started the third book, and that gunpowder cupcake sounds like a tasty power-snack for a powder mage :D Actually, the version of the Storm Sorcerer from Waterborne adventures is an older version. The "official" one is printed in the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, minus the bonus spells. Favored Soul still has bonus spells, which makes it kind of bonkers since it also gives armor proficiency and an extra attack :P

I'd totally recommend that series to anyone, but given your gunslinging character concept I'm sure you'd especially enjoy them! It's set in a fantasy version of the French revolution, with powerful elements-manipulating sorcerer nobility and upstart powder mages who use gunpowder to heighten their senses, guide their musketballs and control explosions. It's way cool. Storm Sorcerers are still pretty cool with all the flying and features that spit out extra lightning damage, but none of the bloodlines are nearly as powerful as Favored Soul. They cut the extra spells from Storm since fewer spells known is what's supposed to balance out the power gained from metamagic and sorcery points. Of course, Favored Soul still has the extra spells plus armor/weapon proficiency and an extra attack, so it's kind of out of control powerful :P

While that's a fair point, Luther is following to his IC disposition. Just because you've had enough combat doesn't mean that goes for everyone; and while you didn't make a 'combat murder-machine' that doesn't mean that he should have to make his sit on the sidelines as well. There's nothing wrong with your non-combative, PC, but there's nothing wrong with his high-combative PC either. Now, IC I think its perfectly fair if you wanted to refuse to fight, but you shouldn't bring the issue to the OOC and attempt to get someone to undo what their character just did. We probably should have talked about aspect-focus before the game started (combat vs. social interaction vs. exploration) but we didn't. That's a discussion we can still have, with the DM's moderation, but in my opinion it has no bearing on the current situation.

My point is he made the decision for the group. I can also a lot of things from my character's perspective, like ditching Luther because he's a homocidal maniac, but didn't do to keep group consistency. We all have to give and take a little, and sometimes that means that you have to tolerate the homicidal maniac because he is a PC, and not initiate a fight with every oppertunity, because some players don't like non-stop combat.
Luther Sorrel player, 52 posts AC 15, HP 39/44 PP 9 Tue 1 Nov 2016 at 10:51 |
Again, I don't see that there was much of a choice here: Mounted undead monsters are charging at us over open ground, and that means it's going to be a fight. Our choices as I see them were to wait for them to attack us or to make preparations to be attacked, and I had Luther make preparations. I don't see anything unreasonable in what I had him do under these circumstances. On the OOC side, Mis, I wasn't aware that you as a player dislike or are tired of combat encounters, so it never occurred to me that preparing for a seemingly inevitable combat would be controversial. I don't think it's fair to hold me or anyone else to an expectation that was never communicated. I agree with Karliah that this is an issue of game style expectations more than it is with my character's choice in this situation. If you'd like more options for ways to avoid combat then that's a discussion to have with the DM. If you'd like for the PCs to take a subtler approach then that's also something we can discuss IC and OOC. With all that said, I'm sensing that you dislike Luther as a character and how I play him. Perhaps it's too much cognitive dissonance to group with a guy who turns into a psycho killer sometimes, which is perfectly reasonable. I'd be willing to tone it down a few notches and explicitly take friendly fire off the table (for one), if that would help. It's not my desire to ruin anyone's fun, and it ruins my fun if and when I do, so I'd rather try to do something to make things better.

Perhaps it wasn't mentioned explicitly OOC, but I think you've seen enough of my character IC to deduct that by now. Mis'sha is a noncombatant who has a crossbow for self-defense. Her mode of transport is impractical for combat and even vulnerable to it. Her interests are academic. Nothing suggests she is interested in a fight. To make matters even worse, and let me state it plainly now OOC so there's nothing under the table; During the first fight my concerns worsened. As I've communicated to the DM, there's a massive power discrepancy within the group, as some of you are optimized for combat. That means I have even less incentive to enter combat as a player. Not only is there my dislike for dicerolling and slowdown of the game, there's also the fact that each of your characters is several times as powerful as mine. Now then, back to this discussion. I want to say clearly I don't dislike Luther or how you play him. I think it's a rather good depiction of the Bloody Nine and you portray him well (although Logen tried a little harder to avoid fights I'd say since he feared the Bloody Nine). What I'm saying is I'm adjusting my playstyle and how my character acts to accommodate you. Were Luther an NPC, Mis'sha would never have associated with him. There's a difference between my personal and my character's perceptions and how they would act and will sometimes override the character's acting with my personal ones to keep the game flowing. I kind of expect everyone to do the same. Think on it, is it unreasonable for Mis'sha not to want to take Luther along after she saw how he acted? I don't think so. But I accommodate another PC. Same thing applies to the riders are headed for the village. They just might pass us by. And Mis'sha communicated she wants to try for that. So why aren't you showing the same courtesy I show you? You know Mis'sha wasn't in favor of bringing you along. You heard her say she doesn't want to fight. You've even seen she's not much worth in a fight. What reason will she have for keeping you around if you ignore her and place her in mortal danger? Why is it me that has to keep adjusting Mis'sha to keep you around, while you can easily do it yourself?

There's dissonance there either way, the only thing that changes is which way it leans. You might have spoken with the DM about playing a non-combative role well before the game started, but none of the rest of us knew that at all, nor did we have much information until after the start of the game. And now that the game has started, you're trying to sideline a character who was built to excel in combat. On top of all that, there is a certain aspect that we as players have to react to the encounters the DM gives us an interpret what we are 'supposed' to do and what we *can* do. An undead inquisition squad who happens to run right into us on an empty road does seem like a situation the DM expects to enter combat. Now, the answer here is obviously to balance the combat and non-combat scenarios so everyone will feel useful at different times. However, such a balance usually end up with an average of at least 3 fights per game day.
Luther Sorrel player, 53 posts AC 15, HP 39/44 PP 9 Tue 1 Nov 2016 at 17:50 |
I still don't think I did anything unreasonable by having Luther prepare to attack a group of undead monsters charging at us at a full gallop. Frankly, I'm annoyed that you insist on making me out to be some kind of inconsiderate jerk because I didn't read your mind as a player and choose to act out of character and against common sense to ensure your fun. So, we're at an impasse. I feel like I made a reasonable effort to meet you halfway on your unreasonable demands, but that didn't work out. It seems that there's no way for me to play my character without you getting sore about it. That's not fun for me or for you, so with apologies to the DM and my fellow players I'm going to bow out of this game now. Thanks all for the good fun for the time we played together. Please remove me from the game, DM, thanks.

No. As I said, I avoid dicerolling and therefore combat. That, and a Scholar doesn't have that much out-of-combat advantage. Just a lot of skills. Any spellcaster likely has more out of combat utility then I on paper. What I want is to roleplay, not drag through myriad combat railroaded combat encounters.
Is he? Yes, he's minmaxed for combat, but if he's anything like Logen Nine-Fingers, he wants to avoid combat. He wants friends, he wants to protect them, but he knows doing battle only makes matters worse for himself. Logen Nine-Fingers would have tried to avoid this fight. So why can't Luther?
I disagree there. Nothing suggests that combat is unavoidable from the description given. It could be the group passes us by and goes to the village, as that is their objective and they are already late to the fight.
If you play an adventure path, maybe. That's why I avoid any official written adventures, since it's so disgustingly fabricated around combat encounters followed by simplistic problem-solving, leaving nothing to sandbox or RP. Have you never noticed how synthetic those adventures are? My own table games average about a few rolls an hour and the rest is just RP, talk, investigating, exploring and perhaps one fight at the end of it all.
I acted out of character and against common sense to ensure your fun. Don't be like this because we have a difference of opinion, and put words in my mouth. I'm doing my best here to work this out.
Or, you know, we could talk it out.
Luther Sorrel player, 54 posts AC 15, HP 39/44 PP 9 Wed 2 Nov 2016 at 12:36 |
I feel like this is beating a dead horse, but this scenario was always going to be a combat encounter. It just was. In IC terms undead have the sole objective to destroy the living and were never going to just pass by travelers on the road. In OOC terms the DM said it was meant to be a fight to test out the new characters with the group. So, I wish that we could agree that it was sensible to prepare for a fight here, because it WAS sensible. I was admittedly abrupt in stating my desire to leave the game, so I want to elaborate on the reasons why I feel that this situation is irreconcilable. This whole thing has already been more airing of dirty laundry than I'd ever wanted to do, so to spare the innocent bystanders I'm going to put this in a private line to Mis, the GM and Karliah since she was involved in these discussions previously. (PM)[Private to Mis'sha; Karliah Culver; GM:
So yeah, there are a few reasons that I don't see this working, and don't feel like it's worth trying to salvage. I've already put too much energy into this argument, and I don't like all the negativity it's brought out of me. For what it's worth, I'm sorry to you Mis for saying hurtful things, but I feel like I needed to express that stuff to explain where I'm coming from. PM [Private to Karliah Culver; Luther Sorrel; The echo of the past: Somehow you are making this all about me, without finding any flaw in yourself. I don't like being put on the defensive, because it makes me really irksome, but some of your attacks here are out of line. Personally, I believe I have been extremely accommodating of the other characters and their wishes. I went from 'I want to somehow sneak into the wizard-lord's library' to 'let's assassinate the wizard-lord so I can get into his library' just so I can have an IC reason to take the cackler along and have a role for him in the party. What have you done? Seriously, what have you done to accommodate the wishes of others? What were your thoughts when you made a homicidal maniac concerning the wishes of the party? Or did you automatically assume we'd all be fine with that? How can you blow my request to have a less combat into this epic argument? You are so entrenched in what you want, that you'd rather leave the game then give an inch, while somehow thinking this is about me. You don't want to compromise and only see conflict where we could probably work this out.
Misha is not a pacifist (no idea where that idea came from). I also mentioned that I recognize that combat is inherent in D&D, but I'd like to shift the focus away from it. Not abolish it. Considering the feelings of other players around the table kind of helps improve everyone's experience. In this exact case, Mis'sha asked you to not do something, and you gave did it anyway, and somehow, miraculously, when I say something about it, it's my fault.
A separate discussion, but it's not just that you play a barbarian, it's that you play an optimized barbarian, causing some imbalance in combat, but I only mentioned that as I wanted to mention why I dislike combat, and that in this particular game, another reason was added for me disliking it.
This is the part where you seriously annoy me. I don't dictate. I ask. And you have your mouth full of me telling you how to play your character, which I never did. I'm not entitled to anything, and neither are you. I don't have to accommodate your character, but I do. But you don't do the same for me.
No, a hundred times no. I, as a player, changed Mis'sha from 'I want to infiltrate the wizard-lord's library' to 'let's kill the wizard-lord so I can loot his library' JUST SO I CAN HAVE THE CACKLER ALONG. And yes, sorry for my character not wanting to shake hands. Yours were caked in gore at the time. She let him into her house though, ain't that nice? But let's examine your argument. Both options you give for reasons to take you along require us to accommodate you and somehow, they involve thinking you are a an OK guy to have around after just witnessing your homicidal streak as your very first introduction. Again, you want us to change your opinion of you, without changing yourself. Ahem. Sorry, but no one in their right mind will think Luther is a swell guy after that intro. Ergo, is it too much to ask for Luther to be self-aware of what kind of person he is and try to fall in line with the wishes of the ones he wants to travel with?
So stop arguing and focusing on the negative and work towards a solution and world peace instead. ]
