Almaric regarded the archer with a stoic face, and the tone of his reply was neutral in tone. " I do not have to explain my actions to you,Archer."

Re: A night in Aghrapur
The protesting woman suddenly pales, clutching tightly to Amalric's clothes as he heaves her to the ground and then pushes her toward the darkness. "No! No--please! Don't leave me with--"

Her words are cut short as she is pulled by the leg from a shape in the black void beyond the torch's range.

Just then, some quick fiddling with the mechanism allows the rock wall to slide open silently, even as the stuffy, still air of this passage seems to grow that much more stifling, as if the flickering torchlight itself is barely holding back unseen horrors from deep underground.

The tunnel beyond the rock--the tunnel the party had initially traversed toward the undercity--is dimly lit as well. It seems a small band of Aghrapur's soldiers are patrolling the area about forty or so yards away, hands to their belted hilts as they slowly creep along, backs to the party, through the passage.

Valornor moved out, steathily travelling down the corridor in the opposite direction that the patrol of Aghrapur's soldiers was headed.

08:52, Today: Valornor rolled 5 using 1d10+1.  Move stealthily, Woodsman: d10+1.
03:53, Today: Valornor rolled 4 using 1d12+1.  Move Stealthily Explorer d12+1.

[13:10, Today: Tristan rolled 6 using 1d8.  sneaking, explorer?

13:10, Today: Tristan rolled 2 using 1d10.  sneaking out of tunnel, thief.

If the Explorer roll isn't used, let me know and I can rp Tristan's failure.]

Tristan watched as his two comrades snuck out of the tunnel, away from the patrolling soldiers. He was of the same thought. He rounded the exit door and followed.

Re: A night in Aghrapur
Slow, quiet steps make the trio's departure easier than a quicker, louder step might have.

In the distance, the city patrol continues its cautious probing of the subterranean tunnels, the squad's members muttering to one another: "...last time I play dice against the sergeant..." "...always takes too long..." "...find that slimy graverobber who's been luring people down here..." their voices continue, fading as distance is made between the two groups.

The undercity's corridors, meanwhile, turn labyrinthine as Valornor, Amalric, and Tristan continue on. These hallways seem almost like side streets in the dense metropolis above ground, save for the still silence and lack of a visible night sky.

Minutes pass, and to some, it may feel like hours go by, before a staircase is espied leading upward toward a similar--although not identical--doorway to the one through which the group initially found itself led underground.

Arriving first, Valornor listens to hear if there is any sound that might indicate that the patrol might of spotted them and was giving chase.  But he heard nothing to alarm him.  Again he stepped aside, motioning for Tristan to come up and do what he was best at.

With the havoc of what happened below and the patrol not too far away, Tristan was having trouble examining the exit.

"Looks all right to me" he commented. He placed his hand, preparing to open it.

"Ready?"

Tristan gently pushed to door open a little. He took a peek out. He pushed it some more. Another peek. He prayed that what he saw was freedom, with access to a gem appraiser.

Re: A night in Aghrapur
The door opens onto a short alleyway connected to a much larger boulevard. During the day, it's packed with vendors' carts and wandering would-be customers.

At night, it's mostly shut down--save at one end where Aghrapur's most hedonistic houses of ill repute sit, their business clearly booming by the sounds echoing down the street.

At the other end of the street is a staging area for many caravans before they leave the city. Guards are almost always hired here, due to the perils of the wilds.

In either direction, new opportunities await.

(OOC: I'll let you each make a decision here about where you want to take your character. From that point, this vignette can fade to black. If we decide to do another, I'll start it up in medias res again, since Robert E. Howard seemed to care very little about smoothly tying together the continuity of his various stories.)

Re: A night in Aghrapur
The fresh air that hit his face, was a balm to the Warrior, after the fetid stench of the belly of the city. He looked to Tristan, for he was the one that had the fruit of their labors, this night. " We have won free of this night's adventure, gentlemen. We should away to some place, to decide on how to dispose of the bauble."

20:19, Today: Tristan rolled 1 using 1d10.  thief: where to sell ruby?

A one on each roll. Oh my.]

Tristan thought for a moment.

"I'm afraid I don't know this civ as well as I should" he commented with some dejection. "Where to sell it safely is beyond me. I'd hate to ask anyone, for they may try to possess it for themselves."

Tristan gave a sulking expression.

The Warrior thought for a few moments, then spoke again. "I say we go to the market and seek out a Merchant that sells gems or a Jeweler, and see what we can get for it. That is far as my thinking takes me."

Re: A night in Aghrapur
Tristan nodded at Amalric's suggestion.

"I have a concern if he's honest to the point of reporting such a gem to the guild authority first. You know, to see if it's stolen. Despite it not being so, it would gain us much unwanted attention."

He thought for a moment.

"Given him the sign of another guild might be risky. An honest merchant would brush us away."

Tristan took in a deep breath.

"Oh, the dilemma, hmm."

Re: A night in Aghrapur

The Warrior scratched his head. " Well, we could sell the thing for what we can get,to a not so honest merchant,or we can have someone cut it up and go to another city and sell the pieces. I just want my purse to having something in it besides lint."

Re: A night in Aghrapur
"I agree" replied Tristan. "An empty pocket is not good."

He grit his teeth as he thought for a moment.

"The problem is, I don't know which merchants in this town are honest and which are not. The honest ones would be obliged to report this gem to the Merchants Guild. They have to make sure that it hasn't been stolen. Even when it's not, it would bring unwanted attention to us."

Tristan thought some more.

"I do know of a merchant that would handle this for us, but he's in another city, as you mentioned. That would take some travelling."[And the chance for more adventure! :)]

More thinking.

"A proper cut of the ruby would take an expert. I know of none here. And it would lessen the value of the gem."

Tristan looked at the archer Valornor.

"What do you think?"

Re: A night in Aghrapur
Amalric slid his sword back into its scabbard, now that no threats presented themselves. He listened to Tristan muse about what to do with the rather large bauble, they had liberated from down below. "Truth be told, I am more than willing to put as much distance between us and this Gods cursed dung pile of a city as possible." Mayhap Sultanapur might be worthy of paying a visit.” He looked around the area seeking potential trouble.

"Yes, I say the sooner we leave Aghrapur the better.  Let's hire ourselves out on the next caravan that is leaving the city.  I say we head for the other end of this street.  Down at the caravan staging area.  We can sell the jewel in the next city we come to.  What do you two say?"  Said Valornor.

Tristan nodded.

"That sounds good."

He thought for a moment.

"Should the most... umm... sturdy of us hold on to the gem? I admit I got lucky with whatever that was down there."

Tristan shrugged.

"I could hold on to it, though."

Re: A night in Aghrapur
The Warrior listened to the Archer's counsel, as concerned a course of action. “I agree, let us retire to where the Caravan Masters congregate, and seek passage, perhaps as guards."

When Tristan asked whom might be the keeper of the bauble, Amalric could not help but offer a slight smile, unseen in the night<Red>. “Tristan, by your asking that question, I am for you retaining possession of the gem, till we sell it. That, and your fool’s courage in acquiring the thing, you displayed. You acted like a gods cursed lack wit, but you showed courage, and to me, courage is to be admired."

Re: A night in Aghrapur
Tristan wrinkled his forehead as his eyebrows lowered. His face showed confusion.

"Why would I disappear?"

He pat the pouch on his belt.

"Let's find a caravan or some way out of here then. Can't let this ruby burn a hole in its container, hmm?"
