Maybe Jack should see about getting a grenade launcher to supplement his Plasma?

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

Not a bad idea, we've been missing a GL since our last one decided to use himself* as the launcher.  Even a GL attachment to the plasma would help.

FYI all, I'm going to be going on vacation for about two weeks from 9-1 to 9-15, so I'm guessing that I won't be around until after the next combat starts.

*aka heroic sacrifice worthy of a footnote in the after-action report.

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

Well with Labor Day weekend coming up in the states, and me losing my usual day off to it in the week, I'm probably not going to see much/any activity on here from Saturday through Thursday, except for the occasional response to questions or comments. So I'll give one or two narrative posts between tonight and the weekend and then we will take a short break.

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

So part of me wants to suggest trying to use our Valkyrie support not to blow shit up but to pick up the remains of the Trygon.  I would say the killclade but I think that'll be necessary to use on the Broodlord or the Magus.  Of course it may not be possible to retask them in that fashion but...

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

I say we use the airstrike to clear our approach, and use the vehicles to get close. The horde already knows roughly where we are, and can surmise our eventual destination even if we go sneaky. The hope is that we can get in and out before they send enough of their big guns to keep us penned in.

The only pro I can see of being sneaky is that the first two or so waves will be more scouting types than the warriors and such and the entry to the ship might be easier. But the cons? Welp we go sneaky we have a good chance of being found, of being tailed, of being surrounded, or in other words dead.

While I also would like to gather the body of the trygon, couldn't we send a comm once/if we clear the ship for a magos biologis transport for it?

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

This is still contested airspace until you complete the mission so it’s unlikely that anyone else will come out here anytime soon.

The airstrike will mostly destroy small units of generic enemies and clear a path for you. The issue with the vehicles is that if you cross open ground to fire up from the base of the slope you’ve then got all that short-pine forest to move through on foot with the enemy knowing you’ve arrived.

If you abaondon the vehicles and cross the plains on foot, or approach the site through the trees on the eastern-side slope, you could get close enough to still call in the strike and rush the site, but without the cover of heavy vehicle weapons.

Dismounting the heavy flamer and taking it with you will not be allowed as it is (basically) defacing or destroying government property. Doesn’t matter that it’s helpful to the mission success.

I say call in the strike and rush the site. Sounds the most badass and thus has the Best™ Chance of success.

Yeah with that extra info I'd say Ghost has it right, abandon the vehicles, call in the airstrike and rush in on it's coatails. Just gotta hope they actually aim unlike most of the guardsmen bombing runs I've heard about. :D

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

Come on guys are we Zakurian's or are we...

Oh wait we're not all thinking almost heretical soldiers. :P

If you want to charge them when their are air striking Ghost we'll send you in the Salamander while transferring the rest to the Tauros.  Then they will think the survivors are attacking from a different area as well as attempting to enter the ship from a different location.  You can be the sacrifice to draw them off and if you get through all the hordes and link up with us later we can thank the God-Emperor.  Though being a Kreiger you'll prolly blow one of the engines to take out more Tyranids and give us more time to finish the mission.  Right?

Jokes aside...

I think we should have the Valkyries come at the ship from a totally different angle and raise all hell as if we were trying to gain access from another point.  Then during the distraction we can use the vehicles to 'sneak' past them at speed so to speak.  Tactics people.  Just because we are expendable doesn't mean we should go looking to expend ourselves fast and loose.  That's an even worse crime to the God-Emperor  Wasting ourselves doing something stupid and failing the mission :P

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

Eh...you can't 'get past them' with the vehicles. That's what I'm trying to stress here.

The ship is buried its entire length under centuries [or more] of dirt and stone and tree growth. You only know where it is because you have a digital map of it lying under the surface of the mountain slope. That's why you have breaching charges: you will find a natural formation that leads to one of the exhaust ports and then breach into the hull.

But to get *to* the ship you have either an open field to cross leading from your position to the base of the mountain spur, or you dismount far to the east or west and hoof it through the short trees that blanket the entire slope. The entire slope. From top to bottom. You may get within a few hundred feet of the nose of the ship, but it is buried and inaccessible. The ship is escort sized - meaning 1.5 km in length. So half of that is about how far you have to walk uphill through forest if you drive across the open ground to the base of the mountain to engage the xenos you see, or to reach the exhaust port you're looking for.

:)

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

If we had stummers or chameleoline, I'd say sneak. But we don't. Quick, loud, and dangerous is gonna be the best and easiest way to get to our breach point. So, call in the airstrike, go in guns blazing, and get in before too large of a swarm can show up.

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

He's a Kreiger.

He knows there are trillions of others that will come after him to finish the job if he doesn't.  Getting out isn't necessary as long as the mission succeeds. ;)

Adeptus Custodes:
If you abandon the vehicles and cross the plains on foot, or approach the site through the trees on the eastern-side slope, you could get close enough to still call in the strike and rush the site, but without the cover of heavy vehicle weapons.

This then.

The only working heavy weapon on the vehicles is the flamer.  So there is no point in using the vehicles as support in that fashion.  We got here in quick order and we know where to go without a lot of searching so we can use some of that time gained on that.  Then not only are we close but after the strike we can clean up and breech before reinforcements arrive.

I'll give Biggs and Two-bit one more day to throw in their opinions and then will go with what we've got. It is unusual for the plasma gunner to keep him mouth shut for a full week. ;)

I think we should take advantage of our air support before it becomes obsolete, then follow up with a blitz on foot. Vehicles at this point are kinda trashed, and will quickly become useless when we have to go indoors.
