Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

Quick question: the ordinary result for the RF I inflicted (5 E to the arm) would leave my target Stunned.  I didn't see a mention of it in the OOC, though, so I'm curious if it does in fact have that status condition.  Could probably use that +20 to hit :D

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

Ah yes...I was so focused on showing yours was stunned [with the scream of pain] and the other was damaged below half wounds with one shot [and a scream of pain] that I omitted that fact. Yes, it is stunned. I would have applied the penalties on the next post but you're right, go ahead and add the bonuses for it in your own writeup as well.

Yeah a sergeant would be nice and useful for those rounds where Jansen isn't with us or busy with other things (like a carnifex in his face)

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

Oof, it's going to be tough deciding whether to shoot the stunned one or the ones actually trying to hit us this round.  Sucks that the bolter got fragged.

I should get me a sniper rifle for situations like this.Edit: nevermind, I've gots me a hilarious solution.

AC, did you decide on what happens when I get more hits with my Semi-Auto shots than bullets I fired? It came up once before but I don't recall you making a clear ruling on it.

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

For a long time I have held to the belief of ‘no more hits than rounds’ but after spending some time watching videos of weapons fire at various targets, I think the possibility of through-and-through hits, ricochets, and crazy deflections should be enough to allow for more damage rolls than actual bullets fired. Makes sense and falls in line with realistic physics.

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

In the obligatory counter-post, it does make single-shot weapons a little bit less powerful by comparison.  The RoFs, clip sizes, and damage values for all weapons were "carefully" chosen and are meant to be balanced internally, and I have the notion (with no actual evidence, naturally) that they're balanced around maximum hits = RoF.

I would be mollified if we were allowed to, say, swap RFs on single-shot for through-and-through, though.  Just sayin' :P

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

It's one thing for in real life where I was skeet shooting and the round where birdies are released from both sides at the same time and by pure chance they both cross my field of sight at the right moment for me to fire one shot and shatter both birdies making the officials blink and try to decide how to call it officially.

It's another to say the guy pulled the trigger and fired a short full auto bust (Rof S/2/3) and it becomes killing ten men with only three rounds clearing the barrel.

It's also a very unwelcome thought that when we do run across chaos cultists and have the unfortunate luck of running across a Chaos Marine their bolter will spit out two rounds and hit everyone in the squad.  What is good for the goose is good for the gander.  I'm beyond happy with RoF being max hits.

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

This should clear things up.

Core Rulebook page 168:
RoF (Rate of Fire): This tells you if the weapon can be fired either on Semi-Auto or Full Auto and how many rounds or charges it expends when doing so. A weapon’s RoF has three entries to indicate the modes a weapon can be fired in. The first entry indicates whether the weapon can be fired singly (with an S). The second entry indicates whether or not a weapon can be fired semi-automatically, and the number listed describes the number of shots fired when the weapon is used in this manner. Finally, the third entry describes if the weapon can be fired on full automatic, and how many shots are fired when this happens. Any mode in which the weapon cannot be fired is indicated with a “–.”

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

Of Note:

If the ranged attack fails, or if the Semi-Auto Burst or Full, Auto Burst Actions fail to, achieve the maximum potential hits, the remaining missed hits—up to the maximum potential hit for the rate of fire used in the attack—are still fired, but miss their target.

This suggests that max hits should be based on RoF but it's written terribly.

I also wouldn't worry about the enemies benefiting from extra hits beyond RoF because the only PC death we've had have been the Twins and I nearly Throne-damned begged for it.

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

I wasn’t begging for it when I had to burn my only FP to stay alive as Zilch.

And the reason why you don’t see it as a problem is because few things we’ve fought as Tyranids have multi-fire ranged weapons or have Swift/lightning attack.  They kill by mass which has taken tolls or flat out killed,  Just cause it was an NPC at the time it was a PC built character set that got shredded and AC has been nice in eliminating them more often than not before those of us that are constant players.  It would be counterintuitive to kill all the active PCs off before the ghosting/dropped PCs that are there too.

Soon as we’re not fighting Zerg everyone of our other campaign adversaries will be pelting us with ranged death.

This is Only War. Don't get attached to your characters.

Also, you're the last person to post in the combat. Let's stow the bickering and get through the fight.

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

Not to belabor the discussion much longer, but thinking back on it I believe AC proposed a solution to the RoF question which sounded satisfactory to me: the net hits remains at RoF, but that extra 1 "hit" from RAW acts as a buffer against dodges and the like.  A bit complicated yes, but since AC keeps (excellent) track of the books at the end of the day it wouldn't be that much extra work for us players.

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

Yeah I didn’t go back and look at the actual discussion we had I just put my thoughts on it. I have been opposed to more hits than bullets my whole life but at the risk of saying idk I don’t mind if high direction your group takes this. As Zilch pointed out what you have the enemy does as well.

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

Jack is not currently engaged in melee [it has reach on the tail so you aren't engaged by 'it' yet], but if he doesn't make the parry/dodge, he will be prone on the ground while the vehicle drives away for one round, and will likely be pounced upon before his turn comes up.

No, spending xp rarely happens in the field...though if you've got some to spare and can give me a reason why the skill or talent is just surfacing now, I'd entertain the idea of you gaining it 'in the field'.

I should probably start treating the plasma as a 'nade and chuck it at the ravener.  Pretty sure if I drop it here I'll end up fragging whatever HP the Salamander has left, even with a Pen 0 hit....

Re: Rear Echelon Comments & Complaints [OOC]

MODIFYING SKILL TESTS pg 113 Only War Core:
Quite often circumstances make a Skill Test either harder or
easier, increasing or decreasing the character’s chances for
success. In these instances, the GM applies modifiers to the
Skill Test to represent the difficulty or ease of the task, such
as a bonus when trying to detect a large and obvious threat
with Awareness or a penalty when trying to swim across a
fast flowing river with Athletics. Modifiers to Skill Tests can
also come from other sources such as Talents, Traits, and Gear
and can be found in Chapter V: Talents and Traits and
Chapter VI: Armoury. Characters can gain bonuses to their
Skill Tests for having higher ranks in Skills as detailed in
Gaining Skills below.
Note: Regardless of its source, no bonus can ever exceed
+60 and no penalty ever exceed –60.
