Roleplaying - Stephan Kohrs

At the age of 16, Stephan Kohr, enlists in the prestigious Skye Rangers where he goes through Basic training and learns everything there is to know about being an infantryman.

While Mechs might be the kings of the battlefield, they took ground, they weren't particularly good at garrisoning and holding an entire planet.  The 10th Skye Rangers was a 'green' regiment where new recruits were trained learned the skills need to soldier.  While the Mechs got the lions share of the limelight and Holo vid times, the conventional support were mostly unsung heroes.

The first two years of his enlistment, were uneventful.  Kohrs was granted an extended stay on Lyons, after completing basic training for evaluation, and then shipped out to help deal with the raids Marik mercenaries were conducting across the border into Lyran space.  A Company of Mercenaries in the employ of House Marik raided the planet.  Stephan's platoon was badly mauled and most of the leadership of the platoon vanished.  It was only Stephan's cool headed level thinking under fire that salvaged the operation.  A dangerous game of hide and seek with the mech company's light lance was engaged.  Careful use of the platoon's mortar assets and artillery support held the lance at bay for the Infantry company to be relived by the Skye Rangers armored support.

This moment of triumph was marred only by the slew of wounded and dead incurred by his platoon.  His actions on the battlefield have distinguished him enough to be bought home to Lyons for evaluation and training.

Results:
Stephan may select one of the following, to unlock one of his Untapped Potentials.  This is to reflect the results of his Basic Training
Option - Weapon Option of your choice
Option - Toughness
Optin  - X-Train - Technician

Path Options:
Distinguishing himself, newly promoted Corporal Kohrs must decide on a few career options.

He may...
Go to officer candidate school, and earn an officers rank to command his own unit
or
Go to advance combat school, and hone his combat skills.  Earning a place in a more specialized infantry unit, remaining an enlisted man.

Continue his career with the Skye rangers.
or
Accept a new offer for placement in the Lyran Guard.

Roleplaying - Stephan Kohrs

Stefan had been lucky in those early years but what had helped him survive was the fact that he bounced back so quickly when his fellow soldiers hadn't been able to (Toughness).  Loosing so many friends and comrades was hard and when word came down that he was up for either OCS or ACS he knew that he didn't want to be lumped in with the unthinking officer corp.  Sure infantry generals were better than those damn armchair social generals that LCAF was pushing out into those giant metal machines but...

Advanced Combat School was his request when the commanding officer had asked him.  It went doubly so when asked if he wanted to remain in the Skye Rangers or transfer out into one of the more general Lyran Guard.  He was no secessionist or part of the Free Skye terrorist movement but Lyons was his home and if he transferred out he could be stationed on some backwater planet in the galactic northwest a good hundred and fifty light years away from home and deep in old Rim Worlds territory worlds that Amaris had come from (Stay with the Sky Rangers).

Then again sometimes the military didn't give you an option...

Schooling was a little longer than basic training, but much more intense than Kohrs had expected.  He has a new platoon to be integrated into, all seasoned soldiers.  The platoon is broken down into squads, which were expected to pull the weight of an entire infantry platoon in the field, and worth an entire company in a campaign.

Physical training, for strength and endurance start on day one and last through to the end of training.  Weapons training and advance weapon tactics [You may unlock a weapon Option] are part of your training.  Some of the finer points of indirect fire are taught and you realize how lucky you were during your short exposure with it's execution.  Who ever took your fire support request was very understanding in getting you through that experience.  It's at this time that you earn your wings in the air, and... water [You may unlock a Pilot Jump Pack] as you learn how to be part of the Skye Ranger's Pathfinders  [You may spend 15xp to Scouting Specialty (does NOT expend an Untapped Potential Slot].

After training you're posted, and operate as a unit with the men you trained with.  While you are part of a larger Platoon, and often posted on a planet together, it's with the six other guys in your Squad that you're often deployed with as a unit.

When the dust settles, after your tour of duty, you have another stripe on your arm.  (You make Sgt. and gain another 25xp)  It's a mixed blessing, due to a snafu in the chain of command somewhere the squad was stranded in the field without support.  You got your field promotion after Sarge bought it, which was made permanent after the campaign rapped up.

As the events wind down, Kohrs has a choice of assignments to decide upon...:
His unit has performed their role well and earning a reputation for the good work they're doing.  Talent and skill means harder assignments.   These assignments sometimes have uncertain goals that may or may not make sense to him.

He's in line to lead his own Squad for operations, of a Black nature.  Operating to the benefit of the Skye Protectorate and of course... the greater good of the Commonwealth.

The Platoon Lt. is due a promotion, and will be looking for a new XO, to help him run things.  You could put in for that position, conceding leading the squad, to helping an officer lead the platoon.

Eight years of service to the Skye rangers is enough.  He's seen, and personally done, enough killing to muster out before someone decides to body bag him into retirement.

Stefan liked where he was but he wasn't a dumb individual.  He wanted to know why they did some of the things they did.  He'd passed on being an officer himself so a more direct line to that was shut to him for now but if he followed the Lt. to his next posting he might learn some and he'd still be with the men (Put in for XO, conceding leading the squad, to helping an officer lead the platoon.) while letting him perfect his craft.

Pondering his time with some of the finest Pathfinders to exist (Spend 15xp for Scouting Specialty, unlock Pilot VTOL) he also reflected on all those times he'd been close to dying but pulled through and faster than the docs ever expected (Spend 10xp on Fast Healer)...

Roleplaying - Stephan Kohrs

It's Stephan's third tour of duty.  He's been promoted to Sgt [+1 rank and +25xp from rank], and has given the logistical support, required for a platoon of Sky Ranger Pathfinders. [You may unlock Well Equiped]  He's learned that while the Commonwealth is an economic juggernaut, that it's bureacracy tends to hold it back from the greatness it can truly achieve, that and the fascination of the people at the top with mechs... bigger... better.  The cost of one of those metal monsters could support several companies of infantry...

That said, Lt. Nate Barnes, is no rookie.  He's a man to be reckoned with, and someone that has worked well with Stephan on this tour of duty.  Several successful campaigns against insurrectionist, and domestic terrorist have been dealt with handily.   [You may unlock a weapon Option] It makes it all the more senseless that he was killed while on R&R.  Found dead in a bar brawl, in some dive somewhere.

His replacement, one Lt. Randell Wellington III, is a Lyran blue blood, fresh out of OCS.  A string of terrible engagements ensues, that are marked marginal success mostly due to the professional character of everyone BUT the Lt.

So ends Stephan's last tour of duty.  He has no stomach at this point to serve a strutting peacock.

Stefan's continued operations against insurrectionists and terrorists helped cement his reliance on more traditional weapons (Unlock Ballistic option, spend 50xp on Ballistics 2) as he wasn't possible battling armour or even worse battlemechs.  His continued work with Barnes was satisfying but his death was something that hit Stefan hard.  Not only did he go to his funeral but he spoke as well even though he knew that it would bring no solace to his family, not really.

When Wellington the Third took over command it was the first time he wished that he had accepted that trip to OCS so that good men and women wouldn't have to die for stupid people like him.  He followed the orders given, but only to the letter, and made sure that the  extenuating spirit of what really needed to be done was taken care of.  In the end though on his discharge when asked for a critique of the unit he praised the men as well as pointed out areas that needed shoring up for the next XO.  When it came to the Lt, though, he left that area conspicuously blank.

Roleplaying - Stephan Kohrs

Stefan wraps up his official military career with the Skye Ranger Pathfinders in the year 3020.  Katrina Steiner has just become the Archon the Lyran Commonwealth.  Her arrival is viewed with suspicion as the future of the commonwealth seems to be in the uncertain hands of the new Archon.  Yet another good reason to depart the military.

Stefan musters out on the planet Skye, the capital of the Skye March.  You may select up to 2300cb of equipment to muster out with as 'personal' equipment.

He has spent the last week reviewing his options.  Summer is long over on the planet, and the cooler weathers that are a prelude to winter feels like a bad omen to him.  Up to now, he has been treating his time off as a sort of 'R & R', though indefinite and extended, it now starts to feel a little 'long'.

Looking over his options they were far and few, his skill sets were narrow and not easily adapted to civilian life.

Stephan's options:
1 - Sign on with a mercenary unit.  They're always in need of seasoned soldiers.

2 - Sign on with Comstar.  They're always looking for talent to guard their hyper pulse generators.

3 - Sign on with a commercial project.

4 - After 8 years of duty.  You could do with a little more R & R.  Life is good so far, why jump back in the meat grinder so fast?

5 - You may name your own option at this time, this is the start of real play (sort of) [ie. no more free xp]...

Roleplaying - Stephan Kohrs

Sitting around relaxing never had been one of Stefan's strengths...it had been why he joined up in the first place.  Still while he knew that there were any number of merc commands wanting people just like him he also knew that it was even more dirty than what he had done and he would be even more expendable.  The thought though that he could sell his skills to ComStar was more than tempting.  It would be like R&R but getting a paycheck.

While it might not give him access to future employment options it might.  So with some small hopes he filled out the extensive paperwork that ComStar wanted to find out if he might be hired or contracted short term...

(Will add that to his remaining cb for personal equipment)
