So Eri was still pretty new when all this went down so as long as you give me an idea of what is expected I'm cool to start anywhere. Just let me know if you need any specifics from me :)

OOC: Redeux

I was thinking of two possible starting points.

Either the Silver Forest and back to the quest line you were on or farther to the west and dealing with the feudal minor lords and some more classical type of adventure.

I think I'd prefer the second option unless there are strenuous objections from the crowd. I never really understood what our quest was.

@DM: Making some tweaks, and I think I'd like a name change. Can you rename Uriel to Berrian Sylvaranth, please and thanks?

Happy to pick up again as you like. Just an FYI I'm going to Disney with the kids next week, leaving Tuesday. I may get the odd phone post in but for the most part I will not be following until I get back.

Uriel:
I never really understood what our quest was.

I think this is an important point. I think it should be clear for everyone what our goal is. Although I must apologize for derailing our trip last time. We had a goal and I steered away from it a bit..

I'd like our adventure/goal to be related to one of the factions we were dealing with before. We've obviously gotten into contact with some of the Orders already, and exploring them further sounds pretty cool. If this also means getting to see some of the background groups (silver elves for example) that makes it even more interesting. I'm also happy to see more of the Eyes of Yggdrasil, but that's of course very centered around Kharash only :P

Re: OOC: Redeux

Posted a fresh start. I made a decision to remove us from the Silver Forest and further west to the Plains of Krieghold. This portion of the campaign will be just as open, but more focused on the interactions of the different factions and orders but with a more classic DnD style for adventures.

Re: OOC: Redeux

So where do we sit with Grunt?

Given grunt's size and the amount of time we've spent with him as his porter, I assume we have some sort of routine established here?

I doubt we just wander from place to place with the thought "we'll figure it out when we get there."

Well, Griswold probably would, but the wiser ones amongst us would have thought ahead, I'm sure.

Perhaps we have some sort of oversized tent for him, or made advanced booking at a place with appropriate accommodation (an inn with stables, a barn, etc)? Also, depending on how famous the guild is, people might have heard about him ahead of time?

Re: OOC: Redeux

You can treat Grunt as more of a mascot type NPC. His size has made him a signature part of your group, so most nobles have likely heard of you because of him. He is too innocent for combat since his rehabilitation, so unless someone directly threatens you, he will stay sidelined. As for accommodations, Grunt sleeps under a super heavy tarp. He likes it that way and doesn’t mind the rain. In the past, you’ve been able to find a barn or stable that he can sleep in during bad weather. He is a big fan of horses and has been caught spoiling Tilda several times with apples.

Any more questions? I’m happy to answer!

Sorry if I’m a bit flaky for this week. I fell in the driveway Tuesday running away from imaginary monsters (I always run to my car when it’s dark), and either sprained or broke my foot/ankle. That combined with covering at my old job has made this week truly awful. I’m supposed to get xray results today so hopefully it’s good news...

I'm doing alright. I got laid off in early January, sent my Dutch girl to a new host family because she was driving my wife to drinking, took on a Japanese girl short term, spent a month looking for a new job, got a new job in early-mid Feb, welcomed the Japanese girl to the family permanently the same day they offered me the job, took on another Japanese girl because her host family was not longer able to host her, fast forward 3 weeks and that brings us to today.

Re: OOC: Redeux

Hahaha! You’re hilarious! We actually tried to get anniversary themed  tokens when we first got married. For cotton we got matching Kramer t shirts (from Seinfeld), then paper we got little notebooks. The third year we forgot and decided we were way too flaky to handle traditions! So now we just eat tons of Asian food and laze about for days. This year was especially great since it was a leap day and that’s the actual day we got married. We used to talk about taking big special trips on actual leap days but that’s just not in the cards for a while. Now we just get soooo much takeout it’s ridiculous and keep saying, “It’s cheaper than Europe, it’s cheaper than Europe,” to justify it!!

I do stay up to date on as many games as I can, but I honestly don't even have the time to handle the games that are already active. I might be open to coming back at some point in the future, but for now I'll bow out.

I keep links to all my games in a private thread within my own game, as well as my character sheets, so in order to cut down on my notifications every day, go ahead and remove me for now. If I wind up with more time again once things settle down, I will reapply at that time.

Re: OOC: Redeux

I've been on this site for nearly 20 years, I'm not going anywhere.

I wouldn't mind picking things back up. If we do though, I think starting from scratch is our best bet rather than trying to pick up the broken pieces from 2 years ago. After our break in 2019 and the attempted comeback then while I was traveling through Europe, I know everyone got a little lost on what was going on and what we were supposed to be doing, so I don't think trying to pick up right where we left off is a good idea. We could do same characters, same story if that's what you want to do, but if so then I think we need a clear path laid out for where we're going, what we're doing, for who, why, and so forth.

I think a fresh start gives us a better chancing at keeping it going long term, though.

I agree with starting from scratch. In fact, I don't think I would even keep it 5e. I have fallen in love with Pathfinder 2E.

In any case, I think I would keep it small. Likely just my core group that has been hear the longest. I have gotten over my need for larger adventuring parties. I have been running a game IRL with only 3 people for over a year (Virtual of course).

I'd be willing to try it. I've joined PF2 games twice on here, and neither of them took off. It's got ton of character creation choices, which is as much a con as it is a pro in my book, as that many options is bound to present the illusion of choice. I'm more interested in 5E, but I'd give PF2 a shot.

The game has been purged. It's just us four. I have to say that I think sticking to 5e is a better idea. At least we are familiar with it.

As for the game, if we restart, It will be from scratch with just the people currently here. I will archive the rest of the threads for posterities sake, but we will start afresh.

Thoughts?

Threads have been purged. I'll wait for Griswold before we continue. I want to know if he is in.

I would also like to point out that my life has significantly eased since we last played. I am retired from the military and working from home, for the most part. I do have time to post. I have also learned a lot from running in-person games and that will hopefully make the stories more enjoyable.

What do you mean by start afresh though?  If you mean from level 1, I probably will make an entirely new character.  Griswold already got knighted.  Would feel weird to start over with him as a squire again.

Sounds good to me, though I don't think we need to change the setting - you have put so much effort into the world building.  Unless you mean moving our attention to a different country within the same world?  If so, I'm definitely interested in exploring one of the other cultures.

Re: OOC: Redeux

How about this for a prompt?

Located on a small island, nestled between the Empire of Krieghold and the lands of the Savannah Queens in the the middle of the sea, lies the former kingdom of Amur. A city-state that played neutral party between the traders of all kingdoms, it was the hub that would rival even Sirai’s massive port. But like so many fallen kingdoms, it fell prey to the greed of a dragon.

Valketh the Stormbringer, an ancient black wyrm, used a mighty spell to batter Amur with wind and waves. Using the storm as cover, Valketh raided the main keep of the massive city and claimed it as his own. Now, centuries later, the ruins of Amur stand as testament to the power of an ancient dragon.

The city of Amur, the surrounding jungles and towns, plus a small port are still occupied. Gatorfolk, kobolds, and dragon cultists guard the ruins and pay homage to Valketh as he slumbers in the now sunken keep. Treasures abound in the ruins, waiting to be claimed, if you can get out alive.

Re: OOC: Redeux

I'm fine with you playing a wizard again, if you like, Wrenn.

I've come up with a concept for a somewhat unusual (and a little edgy) character.  More for story than min-maxing, the best fit for them would be:

Race:
Changeling/Kalashtar

They wouldn't actually be either of these, but the concept best fits with the themes presented by their racial rules.  At the moment I am leaning more towards Kalashtar.

Class:
Twilight Domain Cleric / Shadow Magic Sorcerer / Hex-Blade Warlock / The Undying Warlock

The Twilight Domain Cleric is the least appropriate, but I thought I'd offer it up in case we need a healer of some sort and I am interested in playing one.  I've played grave domain clerics before so I'd rather not do that and though death domain would also fit, it is considered a 'villainous' option and (imo at least) is a little overpowered.

Point is, with this character, I am happy to customise them to fit whatever we need.  Though they'd make for a weak 'tank'.

Undying Warlock is so incredibly bad, it's not even funny. Unless you're in an undead-heavy campaign, you might as well not have a subclass at all. I've been playing one now for 4 years in a PotA game, which is undead-lite, and I regret taking that subclass every time I think about it.

Having an established relationship certainly smooths out the introduction. Working an escort job for our starting gold can work for any race/class/backstory combination.

For a lot of other things, I'd need to nail down which character I'm going to play before I would know the best way to tie them to another.

Quick rules point: I’m going to say no to multiclassing.

As for a language, it would depend on your background. An archeologist that is studying Amur would likely know the language but a regular sailor would not.

Re: OOC: Redeux

Okay, thank you.

I was thinking about giving my character the cloistered scholar background from the sword coast adventurer's guide, but whether or not he specifically studied the Amur is debatable.  I wanted him to hail from the Dunnothi port city of Sirai, so Amur's fate could feasibly be of academic interest to him.  A cautionary tale maybe?

If there's no dual classing, I guess I'll go Shadow Sorcerer.  I've only played 1 Sorcerer before and that was a long time ago. :)

Edit - I'm also thinking variant human, if that's allowed.  Aiming to pick up the skilled feat, which would mean he starts with 4 languages (2 human, 2 cloistered scholar) and 8 skills/tools (2 sorcerer, 1 human, 2 background, 3 skilled)

Re: OOC: Redeux

If you are going to be from one of the many libraries of Sirai, there should be no issue having a cursory knowledge of Amur. It would be similar to a layman's knowledge today of the Roman Empire. The main information is there but the details are fuzzy.

Amur spoke a dialect of Giant as their main language, though the melting pot effect means that multiple different languages were common in the city. Goblin might come in as a close second due the the prevalence of hobgoblin guards and watchmen.

No issue with variant human or the feat choice.

I’ll let you choose from 4d6(high 3), standard array, or (my personal favorite) the 24d6 dice pool.

Dice pool (24d6)
Assign as many dice as you want to an ability and roll for your score. Highest you can get is still 20 but you can ensure higher scores with more dice. Obviously you have to roll at least one dice. Abilities with only 1d6 have +3 added to the score. Word of warning, there are no do-overs with this method.

I guess I'll try 24 dice too :)

2d6, 4d6, 4d6, 5d6, 4d6, 5d6

11:17, Today: Griswold Ortmann rolled 7,18,15,16,16,15 using 2d6,4d6,4d6,5d6,4d6,5d6.  Ability Scores (Str, Dex, Con, Int, Wis, Cha).

Well, okay.  With Variant Human that gets me:

7,18,16,16,16,16

Did I do this right?  I think I did roll above average, but only by 3.  That's pretty crazy Oo

Though, I guess 24 dice works out as 4 dice per stat, which is straight up better than 4 dice keep highest 3.

EDIT:
Also rolled for starting gold:

12:17, Today: Griswold Ortmann rolled 4 using 3d4.  Starting Gold (roll multiplied by 10, +10 gold from background).

Total of 50gp.

Re: OOC: Redeux

Well, I think it was only 3 points over average, but I might be wrong.  And the gold roll was very poor.  Still, I think I managed to get what I needed.

Regardless, I am just about done with my character.  Still a couple of kinks to iron out.  But here's a little about what Wrenn and Eri's new characters would know, if they had spent even a little time with him:

Name: Khalazar Ul Atahbi
(Also known as: Old Man Gloam)

Place of origin: Sirai, Dunnothi

Appearance:
A very old human man, who relies heavily on his staff to stand and walk.  He has exceedingly long hair, eyebrows and beard.  All are translucent-white (think polar bear fur), thin and wispy.  He peers up from under said eyebrows with tired, misty eyes, whilst his honey, but dusty skin is like a landscape of valleys and mountains, covered in deep-set wrinkles.

He wears either travelling garb, or scholarly robes.  Both are unremarkable and dully coloured.

The strangest thing though is the way light seems to interact - or rather fails to - interact with him.  No matter how bright or direct the light-source, he only ever seems to be illuminated by diffused lighting.  No part of him ever gets cast into strong contrast and no part of him ever casts a shadow. Its as though a permanent storm cloud hangs over his head.

He and his belongings feel 'clammy' to the touch.

Personality:
Quiet and often curt, sometimes to the point of harshness.  Can be polite, though this often feels laboured unless in the right company.  Not overly inconsiderate of others, even favouring benevolence, but makes no secret that his own wellbeing is his first and foremost priority.  Loathes physical contact.

Background:
Khalazar is more than willing to talk about himself, though he is sparse on details and, considering his age, short on stories.  He tells how, when he was young and through no fault of his own, he was subject to a terrible misfortune.  An event doomed him to a fate worse than death.  However, at the 13th hour, thanks to an incredible twist of fate, he was spared.  Partially.  He now exists trapped between worlds, spending his life searching for a way to complete his restoration.  He makes particular note of the human scholar who was instrumental is his half-salvation and asks if you have heard of her.  You have not and it seems foolish for him to have asked, as he mentions she was already old when he was but a boy.

Old Man Gloam:
Khalazar's cold nature, age and physical...quirk, has resulted in many false rumours and fearful tales being told about him.  Mostly by children who enjoy scaring their friends with ghost stories of "Old Man Gloam who snatches children from their homes."

Okay, I've made Khalazar in D&D beyond too now.  It took a while as I had to homebrew a bunch of stuff that I have the books for but have not purchased on D&D Beyond (its kept private so not being shared with the community at all).

Anyway, here's the 'share' link for his character sheet, hopefully this works:

https://ddb.ac/characters/58138823/OUvZOg

Wrenn, it seems our characters might be acquainted through scholarly pursuits.  If so, that could make us friends, colleagues, or rivals?

Also, I love that we're starting as two super weak (Strength 7) scholarly characters that are (most likely) going to have to rely on Eri's character to do literally *all* the physical tasks.  Its a very evocative set-up.

My dog got sprayed by a skunk tonight. I didn't realize it had happened, I just knew she had barked at something after I let her out. When she came in, she dove into the carpet to wipe it off, then jumped up onto the couch to wipe it off there too. Now my entire house smells absolutely horrendous, and the smell is a trigger for both my wife's post-covid condition and my own, so the smell is amplified. I may be going to a hotel tonight if I can't get through it, but I get to spend tomorrow trying to deskunk my house. We're going through every home remedy Google has to offer right now, to do what we can tonight, but relief can't come soon enough.

Work stuff has kept me busy the last few days, which is why I haven't posted yet, I'm going to try tomorrow, but I make no promises as I don't know how much work it's going to take to get rid of this smell.

I had to take time off from work to do all the work to get the smell out of the house, but I've got deadlines on the work projects for this week too, so I had to make up those hours. I'll get a post out "tomorrow" which is later today since it's 3:30 AM right now.

I could throw a crap reply with my muddled brain right now, but I'd rather doing it tomorrow when I can put some actual thought in to it.

Apologies for the delay.

RL comes first, so don't worry about posting. We are not on a strict schedule and if we do move the scene, it is easy enough for Mennta to quietly keep to themselves in the bacvk of the group. They are a druid, afterall.

I’m sure the vizier is a representative they need to deal with etc but Herrin is a bit blind when she’s antsy, lol. She doesn’t do well with sitting still long.

Re: OOC: Redeux

GM, could you remind me how you like skill checks to be done?

For example, say both Khalazar and Mennta want to insight the vizier, do we both roll, or should just one of us?

As it stands, I'm hoping to make 2 insight rolls.  First to see if he was lying about being part of the expedition and a second later if he names the house that he supposedly represents.

Thanks!

I’ll rule an Insight for the truth and a persuasion for getting him to say the information you want. You can each roll one but not both.

Great.  Thanks!

I guess I'll try persuasion, then.

If anyone else wants to roll insight (or whatever) go for it.  If not np :)

Dammit lol.  Rolled a 10 on 1d10, before realising the mistake.  Went back to roll the d20 and got a 2 XD

That is just...

I am so sorry for your loss.

I also don't know what to say, other than thank you for somehow managing to think about us, during what must be an absolutely horrendous time.  Now don't think about us anymore, just get through this.

Re: OOC: Redeux

As if losing my daughter wasn’t enough, yesterday I lost my 4-legged best friend to a hyper aggressive tumor that grew in his abdomen. The day after my wife and I complete our road-trip to get to the Pacific Northwest from Columbus Ohio. This has honestly been the shittiest two weeks of my life and I needed to vent. I’m sorry to dump this on y’all but I had to tell someone that I’m struggling mentally and too many people close to me are emotionally wrecked to handle it.

Re: OOC: Redeux

You need to dump it somewhere, I have no problem with it being here. Sometimes letting those fingers fly while you're typing helps a bit, too. I have no idea what it feels like to loose a daughter, but I have lost several dogs and know those feelings all too well.

Huge hugs, man. Terribly sorry for all of it.

Re: OOC: Redeux

Oh no. Holy crap. I’m so incredibly sorry. I’ve lost beloved pets too and that’s heartbreaking enough without it being on top of everything else you’re dealing with. Please please vent to us anytime. It’s so important to have the ability to express grief and pain and we’re here for you. If you ever need to pm me or anything like that, please do. Sometimes unloading our grief on others really helps.

Re: OOC: Redeux

I'm sorry for taking so long to reply.

I've tried to write something many times now, but everything I come up with just feels so completely inadequate.

Just know that we're all thinking about you and that this is a safe space where you can vent as much as you like.

We're listening :)

But, please consider counselling, if you haven't already.  Especially if those closest to you are unable to provide the support you need.

Speaking of the game, have y'all decided on a course of action? I don't mind waiting for the group to hash out the plan before i post.
