Re: Where the Darkness Lies (Chapter 1)

Griswold is a little surprised to see Roland opposing Chris and his mind quickly gets to work trying to come up with an explanation for this scene.  Rightly or wrongly one word keeps pushing its way to the front: possession.

Rushing forward to interpose his body between the two clashing boys, heedless of the danger, he shouts back to the others.  "Take care - something's amiss."

Gambling on being right and running with his earlier thoughts about the words in the antechamber, he guesses Roland is 'possessed' and calls out to him:

The acolyte moved to Gerard and the young Farrissa, motioning him to set her down against the wall. With practised movements he checked her over, verifying she was still alive as he felt the residual divine essence from the watcher.

Seeing Roland attacking another person, and Farrissa already harmed, Wrenn's inclination is to take advantage of the opportunity to remove Roland from the picture now and ask questions later. Only Griswold's actions cause him to hesitate, causing Wrenn to give diplomacy a chance at success before violence.

Init: 13
Action: hold Magic Missile
Trigger: someone attacks either Griswold or Farrissa (attacker becomes the target)
Result: 12 Force damage

Special: If someone does attack Griswold or Farrissa, and it looks like a good hit, I'll use Portent as a Reaction to replace their attack roll with a 7.

Re: Where the Darkness Lies (Chapter 1)

As Griswold spoke, Roland broke off from Chris. The young noble paused for a moment before speaking in a deep, guttural voice that was not his own. "Knight? I am no knight! Those pinkskins could barely hold us off here. You will die under a tide of green!", Roland shouted. His muscles bulge and skin tinge green as his eye glow a terrible red. The short sword in his hand raises to strike when he is bombarded by magical energy from Wrenn.

Roland grunts and speaks again as his wounds begin to close slowly. His free hand raises into a fist and his words become clear. "Rise warriors!", he shouts. A crunching and grinding noise fills the room as the goblin skeletons begin to stand. They do not have weapons, those rusting away long ago, but they do look to have sharp, pointed ends to their hands.

Meanwhile, in the brazier room, Gerard, Farrissa, and Brother Sul are witness to four of the eight skeletons begin to rise from their resting place.

Combat Summary: Kharash, Arizima, and Sul are up for this round. Griswold and Wrenn can post for next round. The skeletons rise for their actions.

Re: Where the Darkness Lies (Chapter 1)

"By the Light... Gerard." The Acolyte stated as he nodded towards the rising dead. "More of this they must face ahead?" He turned and held a steady gaze at the man, testing his resolve.

"If you think you can take her and run, your welcome to try. If not, set her down in the hall behind us and ready yourself. Either way, this does not bode well for our cause..."

As he rose, he clasped his pendant, the symbol of the holy light, and said a small prayer as he readied for the oncoming fight. "Light guide us in these dark times..." He breathed, letting his breath caress the pendant. At the light air, motes of light blew forth seeming to ignite the air around them, settling and then dispersing on their bodies.

If Gerard stays and Fights, I'll cast Bless for the two of us. If he decides he can run, i'll cast Sacred flame(DC 13) at the one closest to the exit in hopes of drawing its attention from the fleeing man.
Either way, i'll move back to the hall in hopes of thinning how many can reach me (us) at once.

Kharash watched the skeletons rise at the command of the possessed noble, confirming his suspicions. "This place has been consecrated, but it - it feels tainted.."

"Griswold, get him behind us," he pointed at Chris. "I'll get to the one in the back!" He flung the burning torch to the side, and ran in the direction of the frightened Kyle standing in the back. Only stopping to deal with the skeletons blocking his path, on which he unleashed a destructive breath of fire.

Following Arizima's attack (which I hope is directed at Roland and not me!)
"Careful not to kill Roland, Lady Arizima.  The boy is not himself."

For Round 2:

Griswold grins at whatever lurks behind Roland's eyes.

"Hah!  Are you so braindead that you have already forgotten?  You and your wretches already fell once.  So shall you again!  Come at me!"

The half elf rises onto his toes, joints bent.  Bobbing and weaving like a dancer.  His rapier and shield work in concert at slapping the enemies' weapons, attempting to redirect their strikes harmlessly away.

Despite his bluster, there is an unmistakeable faltering of voice and action as Griswold faces off against these unholy and entirely supernatural foes.

OOC:
Move:
Circle around Roland, without leaving his threatened area and putting myself into as many other enemy threatened areas as possible, assuming they survive to round 2.

Action: Dodging

Bonus: None.

Contingency roll if needed for an Opportunity Attack:

14:26, Today: Griswold Ortmann rolled 5 using 1d8+3.  Rapier Slash!

Re: Where the Darkness Lies (Chapter 1)

As the chaos of battle begins to unfurl, the shape of the sides shows. The charging, firebreathing paladin chars two of the skeletons as they begin to rise. Their bones blister and crack, yet they continue to rise. In the corner, Kyle begins to sob and mutter to himself. He is clearly a broken soul.

Roland screams in bestial rage as Arizima speaks, his face contorting further. As the skeletons begin to move, she finds one coming at her.

Meanwhile, in the brazier room, Brother Sul and Gerard take advantage of the delay of the skeletons to form a defensive front. Gerard stands guard over the still unconscious Farrissa, but he steps forward slightly to support Sul with a maul he had been carrying on his back.

Griswold's display draws the ire of Roland as the young noble moves to engage, a skeleton following him in his wake. Roland smiles evilly and extends his hand toward Griswold. "Foolish boy, I am Uugbek Bloodfist, greatest of orc shamans. What makes you think I died here?", he asks as a sickly green cloud pours from his fingers.

As Wrenn investigates, he detects the aura of necromancy around the skeletons and Roland. He also detects a faint aura of necromancy at the base of statue, but you can't see what it is from where you are at.

Round 2 Combat Summary: Kharash, Arizima, and Sul are up for this round.

Skeleton Turn: 2 charred skeletons engage Kharash, one goes for Arizima, Wrenn, and Griswold. None attack, forced to use all of their movement. Brother Sul's tactic works and only 2 skeletons are able to engage him.

Griswold and Wrenn can post for next round.

"Ah, Hello!"  Arizima cheerily greets the skeleton that closes in on her before taking a step away with a smile.  "I don't mean to be rude, I'll be with you in a moment."  Her fingers twitch and a swirling mass of blue and black energy crackles in her fingertips before she points it at one of the skeletons menacing Kharash.  "Caf̨t́f҉tr҉ų'sh ͝a̷t́laţh̵s"  The energy shrieks across the room leaving an echo of something that could almost be mistaken for chittering laughter as it collides with the scorched skeleton.

Kharash looked surprised for a moment, as the blackened bones of the skeletons didn't fall apart. But he quickly regained his composure, stepping back with one foot to ground himself. Like a ripple moving down his spine, his scales stood up slightly and smoothed down again - a sign of the dragonborn's increasing annoyance of these undead. It seemed he had to fight his way through to reach the cowering human.

He stowed his shield and in its place, drew the finely engraved greatsword. He held the huge silver blade up for just a moment, showing off the symbol of the Eyes of Yggdrasil glimmering in the torchlight. A shrieking bolt of energy hit the skeleton on his right, so Kharash brought the sword down onto the skeleton on his left.

Re: Where the Darkness Lies (Chapter 1)

Kharash's greatsword smashes one of his opponents apart as a blast from Arizima causes the other to explode into pieces. It is only after the smoking bones settles that he sees Wrenn standing next to him, a gash from a raking claw present on his arm.

Wrenn, for his part, sees a small coin fallen to the ground. It appears to have come from a bowl with more coins at the statues feet.

In the Brazier room, Brother Sul uses his hammer to great effect, caving the skull of one of his looming skeletons. Gerard, meanwhile, steps forward to close the gap next to Sul. The big boy proves his skill with a sledge, the maul pulverizing one to dust. Yet two remain and step forward to the slaughter, heedless of the fate of their brethren.

Back in the other room, Gerard easily picks apart the skeleton, removing the arm and head in quick succession. He is nearly met with a blade to the gut as the possessed Roland tries to take advantage of the distraction.

The remaining two skeletons continue to shamble around, one again closing with Arizima and the other who had raked Wrenn now closing with Griswold.

Round 3 Combat Summary: Kharash, Arizima, and Sul are up for this round.

Kharash is able to take advantage of Roland's focus on Griswold, hammering the youth with a powerful blow from the flat of the blade. Roland seems to take little head as the redness that would have become a bruise begins to recede.

The skeleton in the room closes with Arizima, slashing across her mid-section before becoming a smoldering pile at her feet. The other makes a swipe at Kharash but merely scrapes across his armor.  The two skeletons in the brazier room claw at Brother Sul, one finding purchase against his neck.

Roland smiles grimly and the red eyes flame brighter. "Your arrogance will be your doom, boy. Submit to me!", he says as he ignores his surroundings and focuses on Griswold.
