Armec's Journey

Armec is traveling down the long road which eventually ends with a river which leads towards Baldur's Gate.

He thinks to himself,"Not exactly the desert where I grew up, but where else can a mercenary find work in this part of the world.  Maybe this time the group won't implode for personal reasons."

The half-orc continues down the road hoping the clouds on the horizon don't mean a rainstorm in the near future.

Armec's Journey

"Help!" Armec hears from ahead, but sees nothing on the road.  "Somebody!  Please help!"

Moving toward the noise, about 120 feet further up the road, he sees a bloody dagger.  Just off the road, caught in a mass of spider webbing on the ground, a male elf is struggling.  The webbing covers a 20-foot (4 tiles) area at the base of a large tree.

"Ho there!  Please help!  The spiders dragged away my friend!  I clipped one with my dagger there, but I fear they'll be back soon," he called out, glancing around nervously.

Armec rolled 5 using 1d20+4.  Perception.

Looking around Armec tries to find which direction the Spiders went but did not find the trail.  He decides to ask "Which way did they go?" while moving to cut away the webs which lead up to the Elf.

Armec's Journey

"To the Northwest," the elf said, angling his head behind and to his left.  It was away from the path at an angle.

Armec had just finished cutting the elf loose when something suddenly jumped onto his back!  A spider the size of a dog had landed on his back and snapped at his face, but his quick reflexes let him pull away just in time.

"It's back!" the elf screamed, scrambling away and toward his dagger.

Swinging awkwardly at the creature on his back, his first blade glanced off its chitinous body, but his second sword seemed to find purchase.  The creature hissed and snapped at him again, but it came up short once more as he darted around.

Armec's Journey

With two expert slashes, Armec gutted the spider, and it fell lifeless back to the ground.  The elf let out a sigh of relief.

"Thank you so much!  The thing was probably using me as bait, but it seems to have overestimated it's next meal," he said with a grin.  He sheathed his dagger and moved to a backpack stuck in the webs.  He checked inside the bag and sighed graciously.

"I'm Catua of Daggerford," he said with a bit of a bow as he shouldered the bag.  "I'm ... On something of a secret mission.  Would you be willing to help me rescue my companion?  Of if necessary, replace him?"

Armec's Journey

"I'm Armec" the burly short half-orc says. "If you think your companion is still alive, I will help you find em."

Armec takes another look to the northwest hoping to find the trail of spiders.

19:24, Today: Armec rolled 20 using 1d20+4.  Tracking roll (Survival Wisdom)

Finding a trail Armec slowly travels into the forest keeping an eye open for more of those creatures.

"How long ago was your friend taken away?" Armec whispers.  Hoping to himself that they aren't walking into a trap.

20:17, Today: Armec rolled 25 using 1d20+5.  Stealth .

Armec's Journey

Thanking Armec graciously as they set out to follow the trail, Catua kept his dagger at the ready.  Armec found the tracks of two more of the dog-sized spiders and signs they were dragging something.

"Only a few minutes before you came along.  Grogak got bit right away and one of them webbed him up good.  I was stuck in the other web as they carried him off," Catua explained.

Unfortunately, the elf was not so light on his feet as they proceeded through the woods, and Armec was fairly certain they would not approach unnoticed.

The trail let to a large tree with a cave leading underneath.  The tree was draped with nothing but webs, and the cave stank of death.  Armec could see no spiders in the tree.

Catua was shaking.  "Do you th-th-think he's in there?"

Armec's Journey

Armec replied "That's where the tracks appear to lead." looking to the shaking elf.  "You still want to help your friend?"

If No
"Stay here and keep an eye out while I scout" Armec tells Catua in a gruff voice.  He walks in slowly and steadily waiting for his darkvision to adjust to the darkness of the cave.

If Yes
"Keep a little ways behind me and be ready"  Armec says quietly with a touch of respect in his voice. Armec Walks in slowly and steadily waiting for his darkvision to adjust to the darkness of the cave.

Armec's Journey

The elf hesitated, looking nervous.  "I don't know.  It looks dangerous," he said, clutching his dagger and glancing around.

"You're still going down there?" he asked, hanging back as Armec entered the cave.

The tunnel widened a bit and was strewn with rocky debris.  About 25 feet ahead, it suddenly turned right.  He heard muffled grunts straight ahead, and could see small holes in the stone wall and a faint light beyond.  They clearly hadn't noticed him yet, so maybe he could sneak past?

Armec's Journey

Proceeding past the rocks and around the corner, Armec stopped near the wall.  He could clearly hear the guttural language of goblins behind the wall.

To the South was a larger room with several piles of bones and webs.

The room ahead looked like a den of some creature, but the goblins must be using this cave entrance too.  Armec stepped lightly around the corner into the room hoping to find the captured Grogak or some sign of him.

Armec quietly made his way into the room stepping around the bones, hoping most of them were animals of the forest.

Armec's Journey

Just as he stepped into the room, Armec spotted a tripwire running across the entrance.  He easily stepped over it, noticing it was attached to a cluster of rocks overhead.

The rest of the room was strewn with animal bones and cobwebs, and to the southeast he saw a break in the webs leading to another hallway.
