Sorry it took me a few days to post... I had a job interview and some freelance work come up. Haha, you're all lucky I don't have kids, I could never keep up.

I realized today I didn't properly make some people's character sheet editable. If you've joined fairly recently, you should be able to edit your character sheets now.

The interview went fine... but then yesterday, I got a call regarding a (much better) job I interview for a couple of weeks ago, and I got the job! I start March 6th.

While very good news for the overall longevity of this game (it's tough to GM when you're broke and homeless, I've heard), I might have to slow down my posting a bit once I actually start the job.

Ugh. RPOL swallowed up a big, giant post I made to Aerach's thread. A little too frustrated to tackle that again. Will try it again, tomorrow. Sorry, everybody who didn't get an update! Soon.

Ye Olde Tavern (OOC)
Okay, important OOC post:

I picked up a couple of splat books recently, "An Echo Resounding" and "The Crimson Pandect" for those curious. Echo was rules for players effectively running small fortresses and leading forces in mass combat, and Crimson Pandect introduced a bunch of new spells, gave rules for constructing a "wizard tower," and also changed how magic-users acquire spells.

The short version is I was disappointed in Echo, but loved Crimson Pandect. The "wizard tower" stuff can be easily expanded to include mundane buildings of any type, so players can build their own little fortresses if they so desire. I will definitely 100% be adopting these rules for play, because they're clean and simple while still allowing for all sorts of wonderful and finicky little details.

The other, more complicated thing I rather enjoyed was a rules system for magic-users creating their own magic items, researching their own spells (instead of just finding some dead wizard's spellbook), designing their own spells, even creating NPC monster-servitors like golems or undead. It's great and I'm into it, but it's a complicated subsystem for what is otherwise a very simple game.

As a house rule, and since in the original creation of this setting didn't really have an arcane/divine distinction, I'm thinking about also allowing a magic-user to research cleric spells or cleric to research magic-user spells via this system.

My primary concern is that fighters and thieves might feel left out, but honestly a lot of the magic research stuff is a gold sink... fighters and thieves can either use their bonus gold on buying lots of consumable magic items or building up remote fortresses and small armies of minions. Or they can multiclass and join in on the magic stuff if they really want.

What do you think? Either way, I'm definitely going to include some extra (setting appropriate and reflavored) spells, and add the stronghold-building rules for anyone who survives long enough and gets rich enough to use it.

It's always fun to be able to leave your mark, be it fortresses or artefacts or minions. And I may have just found the base upon which to construct my fortress ;)

Just need to clear it of these pesky monks

I'm not hearing any nos, but I know Cazio's gone for the week and I'd like his input. I'm getting to work converting and "Sia"-ifying some spells, too. And maybe I'll finish the Bestiary someday, I dunno.

And yes, taking over a dungeon is totally a thing you can do, though there will be significant "repair" costs to make it livable in most cases. You could also do things like buy an existing building, or build someplace remote where land is relatively cheap, etc. This all has varying effects on cost. Even fairly skimpy structures will likely cost multiple thousands of GP though... which is good. Because the RNG sometimes hands away multiple thousands of GP, and right now there's not to spend it on besides potions and scrolls!

First, sorry for the delays! Unexpected business kept me away.

As for the rules, that all sounds great. I am especially interested in researching new spells and things like that.

Everybody was kung-fu fighting...

Kind of fun just writing a bunch of combat posts. Work continues on converting the new spells. When they're ready I'll post them with some basic rules on fortress building, long term minion hiring, and the wacky magical research rules.

Eventually I want to finish the bestiary, creating new Sia-specific wilderness encounter tables, and write some setting-specific magic items (Thunderbird feathers are definitely one, along with various Keys for the Domains. If Ao and Ulfur have suggestions, drop me a PM.)

My new job is going well, but it's looking to be more of a 50-60 hour a week thing than 40 hours. This might reduce my posting rate, but I'm having too much fun to stop, so the future of the game is secure for now.

EDIT: Oh, also happy 300th post, everybody! Thanks for playing. Hope you're having fun so far.

Yup, you can use any weapon you want, but your damage dice is always limited by your class. So for a cleric, even if you're swinging around a greatweapon, it's never going to do more than 1d6 damage.

Aerach is using primarily short swords and daggers because he has higher Dexterity than Strength, I believe. That's honestly the more important aspect of weapon choice for most classes; what attribute the weapon used. Light weapons (1d6), small weapons (1d4) and most thrown weapons use the better of Dexterity or Strength. One-handed weapons (1d8) and greatweapons (1d10) always use Strength. Ranged weapons that aren't thrown (like crossbows and bows) always use Dexterity.

By the way, magic rules are up. Let me know if they make sense to everybody. Level 1 cleric spells and level 1 magic-user spells will be posted there for posterity soon.

Sorry for the delay, guys. Work has been brutal and I'm also in the process of moving into a new apartment. Things should stabilize a bit mid-April.

I'll try to get new posts up on Thursday, but to answer Aerach's question... you're only down 1 HP. That's because you can always recover 2 HP from a previous fight by "binding your wounds," which only takes 10 minutes, so is something I assume your hero does after each fight. In every fight so far, you took 2 damage or less... except for versus Hygevas and his cronies, where you took 3 damage.

So you're only 1 HP down. 5/6 for level 1 clerics, if I believe.
