When our school bus turns left.
That Monday morning things started just as usual, Max awaited for the bus on the same spot as usual, at the same hour as usual. Julio arrived and saluted with a low key mildly raised hand before going back to his business as usual. Anybody else but you would take that as a slight, but Julio was just like that.

Then the same bus as usual arrived. However it was far less occupied than normal. You took, however, your usual spot at the bus as did Julio, just in front of Frey and Spider. Everybody saluted as usual and then the first oddity, the buss skipped two of the usual stops. Then in a crossroads, the bus turned left instead of going across.

Spider then started to freak out. "No, no, no, they are going to get us. We are going to be turned into human test subjects. I tell you man!"

When our school bus turns left.
As Max was talking, Frey rolled her eyes. "Do any of you ever check your e-mails?" She scolded them. "They reorganized the schools in the District. A lot of things happened, but basically they needed room for sophomores and juniors and then they sent us seniors into another school. It is John Bates! it is the best equipped in many counties! They have a huge library, many labs and space for lots of clubs and extracurriculars! with all of these resources I'm sure going to land a great college!"

At that moment the bus stopped to pick more students. Three girls got on the bus, two of them walked dragging their feet while the third one was extremely energetic. They took a seat across the aisle and the energetic girl looked at Max and his group. "I think we took the wrong bus"

"OK, OK the libraries and all that stuff... but how about basketball facilities?"

Max looks at the three girls that just came into the bus. He doesn't like the two that dragged their feet, but he has a second look at the third one, saying nothing.

Re: When our school bus turns left.
Frey answered "I didn't really pay attention to that part. I suppose they have some. Their futball team is very good, so maybe they have good spaces for basketball too."

The bus didn't take long to arrive to the campus. It was a fenced property that seemed to extend for over a mile. There was an stadium and two bigger buildings along with many smaller ones.

Upon arrival, the people on the bus were greeted by a woman in formal clothes. She couldn't be older that 30, but going by her expressions and unchanging smile, not to mention her eyes reflecting a childish innocence and glee, she could easily be mistaken for way younger.

"Welcome!. You are the last group! Come with me! I'll take you to the Auditorium."

When they arrived, there were some about a hundred or so students already. They were spread around in very small groups, and not interacting among between the groups.

Max stops as soon as he enters the auditorium, and has a good look around, especially at the people inside. What's his first impression?

Re: When our school bus turns left.
The auditorium was the standard fare, with room for 500 people, a big scenario and even a foldable screen hanging between the heavy curtains.

However, there were way less people than the maximum capacity allowed. The three girls from the bus were quickly joined by other three fashionably dressed girls. They were talking among themselves, but the impression varied considerably when looking at different interlocutors. One of the girls that wasn't so energetic before was now blushing and speaking with animosity towards one of the girls from the other group. She and her group acted aloof and with some prepotency. On the other hand the energetic girl form before was smiling as if talking to a close friend while the last girl from the group might as well not be there, she just remained as tired and dettached as back on the bus.

Other highlights included two guys chatting animatedly with a girl. One of them looked lie your stereotypical bookworm, and the other looked like a delinquent. The girl on the other hand was very sporty looking, was wearing a spandex top, a band in the hair, leggings and a token skirt over them.

Meanwhile on the other corner of the room, another group of two boys and a girl sat while staring at everybody. They seemed to take turns scanning the room, but spoke very little if at all among them. One of the boys was tall, very tall, over six feet tall and sported a crew cut. The other was short and had a waifish physique. The girl looked very normal and nondescript in comparison.

Near the bottom of the stairs three black-haired boys wearing all black discussed with another guy. The three of them were on the fat side. The other guy was dressed in what could be described as a casual suit, he wore a blazer over a pale blue shirt and formal slacks. All about him screamed "Money!".

Without them noticing, another guy sat in one of the chairs close to them while reading, but from time to time he directed a stray look at them and smiled.

Two muscular boys chased another one who was wearing glasses and had long hair tied on a low ponytail. A couple of twins seemed to be fighting over a canvas mounted on a portable easel.  A very small boy was hiding in a corner. A clique of five girls chatted among themselves and giggled. Most others weren't as interesting and kept to themselves.

"Well, they didn't say a thing about it in the webpage..." Frey responded with equal astonishment.

Then, some familiar faces approached.

"Max!" a young man cama rushing. "Spider!, you are here!" After him came another guy. They were Lou and Nick, they were part of the same team as Max.

Two other members of the basketball team haven't shown up yet.

There are some more students from your old school that came with you on the bus.

Then, the same lady from before spoke on the microphone. "Dear students, please take a seat and let's welcome our Vice-Principal, profesor Christopher Cobbington!"

Re: When our school bus turns left.
The viceprincipal was a stern man in his mid-thirties. He entered and walked steadily "The three off you, leave the platform and go into your seats." He said to the girl and two boys that had been sitting on the platform. "You two, there's time and space for art, put away that easel." He directed to the twins. He continued on his way signaling to the students one by one.

When he finally reached the center he addressed everybody. "Good morning students. This is John Bates, a very prestigious education center which has created everything from successful doctors and businessmen to even presidential aides. Our students are the top of the crop when it comes to academic, athletic and artistic achievements."

Frey's eyes grew big with excitement. "And that is why I'm not going to tolerate any deviation from discipline. You are lucky enough to be allowed to join our students, but have done nothing to earn it. Thus all of you are on academic watch until you prove you deserve a spot in our beloved institution. You will be allowed to use our installations, but you'll remain on separate classes from our students if not on separate tracks. Remember, you are welcome here as visitors. Feel yourselves at home, but never get too comfortable. Whoever breaks discipline will face expulsion."

"We are still working on getting an schedule for all of you. We just need something from you." A group of volunteers entered the auditorium holding papers and pencils. "Start delivering those!" he commanded as the volunteers began giving everybody one test. "That test will determine what classes you'll take, what labs will be open to you, and if we are even going to bother teaching you. So, no pressure. Congratulations, enjoy the easiest test you'll have in this school!" He said the last part on an omynnous and over the top way before he turned away and left.

The lady just clapped like a three-year-old...

The test was very comprehensive and very detailed at certain points. You noticed that not only you struggle with it. Frey looked in severe distress. All of her life she prided herself on being a great student, yet some of the stuff was hard even for her.

"Ok, time is up," the woman in the platform talked in the microphone and just like that the experience finally ended. The volunteers picked the exams and you clearly heard some of them mutter.

"The vice-principal was very nice today."

"Yes, he was on an unusual good mood."

The woman spoke once again. "The vice-principal told me to organize activities for you. But I forgot about them!" she smiled again "So, you are free to go around the campus and check the installations for yourselves. Go ahead, look for clubs that interest you, make friends!"

She then left the stage.

Frey was in the verge of tears, she was in a dark and brooding mood.

Do you want to name the members of the squad, or do you want to name them yourself?

A couple of volunteers got close to Frey, they began to talk with sympathy. "Don't worry, we all went through this. You'll feel better in no time." One of them indicated Max how to reach the basketball court.

When Max and his three teamates reached it, it was already occupied. There was half a dozen guys wearing equal Jerseys facing both the tall guy and the short kid that were looking at strangers before. There was also the bookworm, delinquent and sporty girl trio from before. They were all engaged on a three way disagreement it seemed. They had stopped talking and were now staring at each other. You could literally cut the tension with a knife.

Max group began to play and throw some balls around and bounce the ball. However very quickly the guys in Jerseys approached and very angrily demanded "Stop at once! You are  desecrating the court with you feet!"

The delinquent and bookworm moved closer and the girl with them yelled. "They have the right to be here! As all of us! we take nothing from you!"

The tall guy grinned "You're wrong!, this court now belongs to us!!"

Max doesn't give any sign he actually noticed them, but speaks loud enough for them to listen: "Usual bullshit, guys. Let's keep playing. When we came here there was nobody playing - they got interested on the court only after we were here... they can carry on doing what they were doing before... But we need to keep training or we won't be able to help the school team!" He shakes his head and executes a slam dunk.

When the ball was passed, the small boy by the tall one ran quite quickly and jumped, as he quickly intercepted the ball, preventing it from reaching its target. He then began to bounce it casually. The leader of the school team also approached. "Let's make it a four way then, and when we win, none of you'll ever set foot in here again"

Then the delinquent and the nerd got next to Max. The delinquent basically hugged Max from the shoulder "Hey, hey, more like a three-way. We are on the same side, don't you think pal?" he was saying the right words, but he sounded sleazy and conniving. "We also believe that bullies don't have the right to step on the others and everybody should be friendly. What do you think man?" He actually sounded sincere.

Max shakes his head: "This is rubbish... So if you lose, none of you'll ever set foot in here again? Rules have to be the same both ways, you know?
We just play for 10 minutes... two teams in the court: the losing team goes out of the court and another team replaces them for 10 more minutes... and so on. That is, if you are interested on playing. If you are good enough, you can stay in the court for long time... if you are not interested in playing, just move on and let others play. Believe me: the world is big enough.

The delinquent looking guy -Joey? he didn't look like a Jenny- then took it. "I'll get it from here Johnny." He declared "My proposal. We play a single game, those who want this to be open, and those who want to exclude others. Five on Five, anything goes until we hit twenty points. If we win, you all agree to let us play and not to exclude anybody. If you guys happen to win, then we leave and you can duke it out among yourselves."

Then Max remembers it all, one of the regulars hadn't been seen at all that day, and the rest were juniors and sophomores so they were moved to different schools. In short, there were only three others on his team.

The leader of the home team spoke out in a defiant tone. "We don't need no help, you all can team up together and won't bea...". But the tall guy -Ben- interrupted again. "I like that, when we win, you all will follow my orders!"
