Introducing Eryn
In reply to Isobar (msg # 1):

Description:

A short woman, Eryn has always been greater in spirit than stature as she stopped growing just an inch over five feet.  Whether she’s learned to pass up indulgence through her childhood or through the teachings of the Abbey makes little difference, when Eryn can spare bits of her food to those less fortunate she does and she is slight of frame and muscle for it.  What she has given up for others as far as physical strength goes, she makes up for with her mental aptitude.  The slight woman keeps her flat, straight hair short about her shoulders, just long enough to pull back if needed but not so long that it would take long to tend to.  Her eyes are a dark hazel, often caught flashing between anger and amusement while she tries to bite her tongue and remember the teachings of the Abbey.

History:

More than once the success of Eryn as a Cleric had been put to question, after all it is well known that you cannot change the blood you are born with.  Eryn was born the daughter of a wench and a soldier.  Which soldier exactly one could never be sure considering her mother’s profession and none never stepped forward to claim the child by the time her mother passed of illness.  A nine year old, unwelcome underfoot in the brothel, she was taken to be disposed of at the Abbey where those devoted to the gods attempted to turn Eryn to a much better way of life than where she had begun.  ‘Twas not easy task with a child with a mouth so foul and more than one bar of soap was sacrificed as a means to an end.

Overall the brothers and sisters of the Western Abby do not believe they have done a terrible job of Eryn.  She has proven to be apt at communion with Nyaos, the God of the Stars and has gained favor with him.  Favor enough to even practice the ways of a cleric, though how long that will last before she loses that favor, well that’s been the whispers around the Abbey and Brother Joseph has had to remind more than one of their companions that it was a sin to spread falsehoods.  As it is, Eryn still has her good days and bad days around the Abbey.  Peace can be found when she manages to hold her tongue, temper and keep her features in check.  Other days she manages to pull the carefully schooled temper right out of the other companions.

It was with a headache once again bearing down on him that Brother Joseph finally considered the suggestion to send Eryn out of the Abbey.  Not permanently, of course, this was her home.  No, but it was good practice to send companions out to gather worldly knowledge before coming back to teach younger disciples.  Besides, some worldly knowledge might help to weather Eryn and show her that life at the Abbey was not so bad...

What knowledge are you seeking?

In reply to Isobar (msg # 3):

What was the name of your home town?
Eryn was rather fortunate that her mother’s friend was willing to take her to the Abbey those many years ago, otherwise she wouldn’t have been the first child left to the streets.  Her home town she remembers vaguely.  Marlton had not been a grand city, but a small town on a main trading route near the border.  Eryn can still remember how busy the tavern would get at night with rowdy men, the laughter and smell of ale.  She can still remember playing by the windmill with the other children before being called home and stuffed away in her little closet room while her mother worked through the night.  ‘Twas not a bad life in Marlton and she doesn’t remember it with distain.

How do you pray to your god?
Nyaos, God of the Stars, rules over the domain of knowledge and the unknown.  He is a god that demands respect from his followers as well as their devotion to his domain.  Eryn has earned her favor with him thanks to her devotion to her studies, preferring to spend her time in the Abbey’s library with the books than in the company of others.  The precept, or belief, of the Abbeys teachings has been that of offering and so in each communion Eryn reoffers her devotion to Nyaos.  There are times when this is done just through quiet prayer and contemplation.  Other days, when she is particularly upset or in greater need of comforting from her deity, she will strengthen her offer of devotion by using her pendant to prick her skin and offer drops of her own blood to the god.  Her hands are riddled with small scars from this practice, but her pendant remains pristine as she is always careful to meticulously clean it afterwards.

Introducing Eryn
"My dear Eryn,  It seems like only yesterday you were dropped off at our doorsteps a bit... let's just say rough and eager.  Nyaos most definitely tested the limits of our patience delivering you to us." Brother Joseph chuckles a little bit. "In the years following, you have turned into a very studious and devoted member of our abbey. While you still have the occasional lapse in temper, we believe you to be a subject worthy of our final task."

Brother Joseph hands Eryn a small ornate chest the he was holding.

"This chest contains everything you'll need to start your journey.  We ask that anyone who wishes to teach our young followers here leave the confines of the abbey and seek the truth about the world we live in.  You will learn more taking on this journey than you could ever hope to learn reading about the world in the safety of your room. When you feel you are ready, please return to us and share with us the wisdom that you have obtained."

Brother Joseph also pulls out an item wrapped in a silk scarf.

"When you were brought to us by Madam Aliciya, she also brought this pendant. She said it was the last remaining possession of your mother. From what she told us of this item, it was given to your mother by her mother on her deathbed and she kept it hidden so none of the other members of her... house would find it.  I spent many nights pondering the time to give this to you, and now seems like the appropriate time. Take this and let it guide you on your journey for faith and wisdom."

With that, Brother Joseph bows to Eryn and takes his leave.

[2d6 + 2] = 9
<1-6> - Town
<7-9> - Interesting Person

Eryn took the ornate chest carefully in her hands, tucking it to her stomach even as she shifted it's weight to one arm and in turn took the item wrapped in silk.  She thanked him in murmured tones as he turned and took his leave before she sat down slowly on her cot in her simple room.  Admittedly the knowledge that Brother Joseph had just spoke of her mother as well as her grandmother bore a great weight to Eryn as she looked at the weighted silk in her slender hand.  Twisting, she set the chest to the side momentarily to give that silk her undivided attention.

Fingers lightly scared with signs of her devotion to Nyaos tingled as she unfolded the silk, turning whatever lay inside carefully with each turn of the cloth until the last pull upon that silk scarf left a pendant and chain upon the palm of her hand.  The pendant was similar to the small iron wrought symbol of Nyaos that sat upon her neck now, a sign of her devotion to the god of the stars gifted to her by the Abbey, but it was also different.  Larger by nearly twice the size, this star was made of a finer metal, silver perhaps by the way it gleamed in her hand.  Eryn’s lips parted at the shine and she ran her thumb lightly over it’s fine working to the gem in the center that sparkled - a small diamond.  She could fairly feel the gentle hum of Nyaos come through her fingertips from the pendant as she held it as if he approved of the pendant designed in his symbol.  Eryn knew her heart approved.

Setting the pendant to her lap, she reached up to the leather cord around her neck from which hung the simple iron star and pulled it from her head, kissing it and quietly thanking the Abbey for letting her borrow it for prayers before she took the fine chain that the new pendant was set to hang from.  It took her a moment with her head bent forward to work the clasp about her before the fine pendant hung from her neck but once it was she turned from the bed to move down to her knees, carefully using the point of the star to cut the skin of her finger with this pendant for the first time.  It cut easily with little effort and she made a fist around that blood in prayer, offering it to Nyaos that he may be pleased in her choice to use the gift from Brother Joseph, Mother, and Grandmother in order to pray to him.

Prayers and renewed devotion to her god complete, she stood to fold the silk scarf, thinking it a fine thing and set it aside before she opened the chest also given her by Brother Joseph.  Within was another gift that took her breath away as she lifted from it a journal.  Black in its leather binding she watched in awe as the stars, carefully inked upon its surface, shifted from one constellation to another.  Nyaos bless - it was beautiful.  The woman could not help but set her unbloodied fingers to it in admiration for a time simply watching those stars shift before she gently undid the leather clasp and opened its pages.

Inside the journal, she found most of the pages blank, but the first two pages were written on in Brother Joseph’s own hand in a letter written to her.  Curling her legs under her, she settled the journal on her lap and began to read silently.  The letter spoke to her of a town he had once traveled to when he had gone out on his own journey to learn of the world.  He felt that it was in good conscious to guide her to this town as he had learned a great deal himself there.  He also wrote of one person in specific that he had learned of within that town…

Introducing Eryn
Brother Joseph goes into great details telling Eryn about the Port Town of Layzi.  He describes the adventure he went on with a group of mercenaries to rid the town of a local horde of Minotaurs who were attacking any caravan that was unlucky enough to be traveling around at night. His letter takes an ominous tone towards the end however, as he describes one of his allies falling in battle to the Minotaur King "Minras."  The end of the note Brother Joseph mentions one of the surviving members of the party as a Paladin by the name of "Ginwah" who gave up fighting after watching his ally perish in battle.  He know lives his life as a devout follower of Nyaos, tending to the Gardens of Seren on the outskirts of Layzi. He tells you if you are ever in need of guidance and are nearby, to seek him out and show him this journal.
