Re: Intro
Nico smiled at the queries, that same cat-like grin. It amused him to see such simple minds compared to his own. "Well, Mister Valenko, I do happen to have a cat, however I'm afraid he's not in the stroking mood. I'd be willing to impersonate every ancient movie villain for you at a later time. Speaking of ancient movies, Mister Davison, there will be no red pill or blue pill. The simulation has ten levels, each progressive harder, each testing you on a different skill."

"Concerning the interface. Ah, yes. How, how indeed? You see the interface has more than one purpose.. A rather ingenious contraption of my design. You see, it not only prevents damage to your brain and body, it has the power to update you physically to the progress made in the simulation. Amazing, right? However, I don't expect such feeble minds like yours to understand, truly. In the end, however, the result will be amazing powers. Superhuman abilities assigned to you to build on your current above-average abilities. That is... if you survive."

There was a long pause. For once, Lacaille actually looked pained. Whether it was due to admitting the possibility of death or flaw in his system is up to the present parties to decide.

Finally, Nico went on.

"There is only so much," Nico said quietly. "So much that the equipment could take. In order to hook up a device like this to your body it takes an enormous amount of strain on any electronic to match the pace of life itself. If you were to fail a level, the simulation would try to reset itself to try again."

"But the electronic would be so heavily integrated with your body at that point, it would try to reset your brain. Which is impossible. This failed reset would lead to a split-second glitch of the interface, resulting in all that pent up stored energy to rocket into your brain, ending your life immediately. A painless death, an endless sleep."

Nico cleared his throat abruptly and slowly stood up. There was no laughter in his eyes now.

"But we want to do everything in our power to prevent that. Hence," Another pause "Is why we  made A.P.U.S."

He gestured to the girl on the screen now. She was having fun switching the slide on the screen to different landscapes, whirling and playing on a snowy mountainside, a flower dotted playing, a thick forest, completely oblivious to the conversation going on around her.

Re: Intro
At this moment another student enters.  He is young and gangly looking just older enough to perhaps be starting high school.  He is dressed in a formal white shirt and dark green vest and trousers and wears a light vividly green scarf around his neck.  As he is lugging his bags in through the main doors he calls out "Hi sorry I am late, my name is Gre---"  He pauses for a couple seconds as he processes the scene before him.  Flamboyant Nico grinning like a cat that just ate a canary, another young boy looking injured or perhaps in the middle of a panic attack being comforted by another young woman.  Then a whole host of other students of widely varying ages with expressions ranging from guileless, to suspicious, to actively hostile. "---gory."  He finishes then lapses into an awkward silence.

Taking note of one of the more alert but reserved students he moves to a spot next to Arthur.  He seems content to let the scene before him play out as he gets his bearings, his eyes drifting between Nico, Nikolai, and Adrian as he waits to see what will happen next.

Re: Intro
"Welcome, Gregory. I trust you have not been filled in?" Nico asked, looking unsurprised. It was just like his organizers to bring someone late. He'd have to explain everything from the top, answer the same annoying questions, and THEN explain A.P.U.S's purpose. It was madness. It was possible that Fraus had updated the boy on the way, but that was up to Gregory to reveal.

Re: Intro
Gregory's face and ears turn beat red with embarrassment as he gathers himself to reply. "Uhhh one of the men in the car mentioned some basics.  Something about a training simulation or some such.  Don't mind me I am sure I will be able to pick up the information as we go and get filled in afterward if need be".  Taken on the whole it seems he was briefed but probably didn't pay as close of attention as he should.

Seeing an opportunity, or possibly just easily distracted, Allison tried to make her way over to Gregory in a manner that wouldn't disturb the others, then with a beaming smile the girl extended a hand and whispered excitingly, "'allo, I am Allison, I 'ope we can be good friends, Gregory!"

Re: Intro
As easily distracted as a kitten Gregory's full attention shifts from Nico and turns to young lady addressing him.  His reply is friendly but slightly guarded "Pleased to meet you, I hope we can be good friends as well."  He pauses for a moment obviously searching for something else to say, then lowers his voice so that he won't disturb Nico or any of the others should they choose to continue their orientation.

"So why did choose to come to this come to this program?"  He shifts his position slightly so that he keep Nico in his field of vision while still carrying on a conversation with Allie.

"Good day, Gregory!" Daniel said cheerfully, before turning back to Nico.

"That doesn't sound much like a simulation to me, if we can still die anyway. And... do you have any idea what sorts of abilities you're looking for?"

Re: Intro
"That's...incredible!" The idea of superhuman abilities seemed utterly fantastic to Arthur, but who was to say what was possible or not when it came to a research giant like Lacaille? And certainly, the idea of being tested first made sense in Arthur's worldview - that was how he'd always demonstrated worth. "What kind of simulations are these? What are we being tested on?"

Re: Intro
"It's good to hear that you're on track with us." Nico said, relieved. Less frustration for him.

"As I was just saying, the simulation would give you superhuman abilities that build on your own. Supposedly different for each person, and totally out of our control, unfortunately. So let's say you are a superstar at sports. The interface would see your extreme physical abilities and might give you, as people with smaller minds might say, super-strength. The same with how a talent for chess-like games might allow you to become a super strategist, or a aptitude for swimming could possibly allow you to breathe underwater. It's all quite relative, you see."

The Peacock was preening, but Nico couldn't afford to tell him. Not like he didn't want to, but somehow in his own company, on a project under his supervision, he was still restricted. It was enough to make one go mad. He tried not to look angry and responded in a calm, in control voice. "Unfortunately Mr. Girard, as shady as it sounds I'm not allowed to tell you that information. You will find out in good time." Nico looked around.

"Now, any more questions or can I go on?"

"Just one." Nikolai said. He would never say it out loud, but it sounded... Incredible. If what the guy claimed was really possible, it would change the world. It left one glaring question.
"vhy?" He went on. "vhy us? and perhaps more important, vhy do you do this. I understand fascination with the things you say, but vhat is end goal? Vhat is purpose of making next generation? Vhat is purpose of making... Żbermenschen?" He asked. He had deliberately used an old word, one that a certain german dictator had once used whn he sought to "better" humanity.

Marianne sat patiently as the man pulled away from her, not moving forward or back, simply...sitting. Listening to the goings ons of the party behind her. It was far too late to run now, so she did her best to forget the disheartening news and focus on the upsides best she could. There was little more shoe could do in this room anyways.

Gregory first replies quietly to Allie,

"No I took a rather odd aptitude test, I figured that if I was accepted on the basis of it, the opportunities here would match up with my interests.  Did you enter some sort of contest?"

Gregory strokes his chin considering Nico's and the others words carefully before speaking.

"Very interesting so was the "aptitude" test to search for compatibility or to ensure a wide range of natures in order to gather more data about potential outcomes?  Also I heard some mention of "next" generation does this mean a group people have already gone through the simulation and that your knowledge of the risks involved is more than theoretical?"

Gregory tries not to be too obvious as his eyes drift over Nico's neck looking for signs of the surgery.

After Daniel - the rather dense boy that was scaring him - left, the skittish boy seemed to relax once more. Adrian was still scared, but Marianne's quiet presence was doing wonders. He reached out a hand to take hers again, and, as his breathing slowed, began to hear what was happening in the background. His eyes met Marianne's, and his hand and body shook with fright.  The implant, the talk of things he understood but wished he didn't, the thought that they could all die here... "I-I-I d-don't w-want them t-to d-do t-tests on m-me... I want t-t-to go ho-home...."

Re: Intro
There were too many talking at once. Nico rushed to answer the swarm of questions.

"The comparison of me to that old discriminatory movement is a little hurtful, considering that my motives are purely altruistic."

Nico matched Nikolai's piercing gaze,  folding his hands together. He did not like to be challenged.

"I'm sure you're fairly acquainted with history books, Valenko. But if not, let's have ourselves a lesson. Thousands of years ago, the world was absolutely doomed. War ravaged. Polluted. Over-populated. Hateful. The world was a host, infected with a poisonous virus."

"Our ancestors found a way to heal that virus. And we have lived in peace ever since. But history will repeat itself, children. It always does. War will break out. People will find others to hate. This is all part of a rule implanted in our brains called reciprocity. Long story short, the world is busy patting itself on the back for being perfect, so it feel that it doesn't have to uphold that since it's already been so good. The rule of rewards, to say it simply. So your purpose is to prepare for that moment, so when the world goes to shit again, we will be ready to fix it again."

Nico breathed out, having answered so many questions today already. He was tired, irritated, and the day was just beginning. He glanced over at Gregory.

"Boy, I thought you said you were filled in. YOU are the next generation of humans. That is, if you finish the simulation. You all are the first group to be tested."

Adrian quivered and shook, looking terrified. Nico softened a moment at him. This boy was his favorite of the candidates so far. The dove reminded Nico of himself as a boy, but just a bit more skittish.

Nico got up and stretched. All the hostility was out of him now, and he walked over to where Adrian was curled, clutching the hand of Marianne. Nico crouched and smiled at the boy. He spoke so quietly so that only the two children sitting there could hear him.

Re: Intro
"And finally you move past bluster and mystique to reveal core reason." Nikolai stated. He considered what Lacaille said about the world being locked in a cycle of alternating war and peace. "Hope for peace, prepare for var, eh?" He mused, a small, wry smile spreading across his lips.

"I do not trust you, Lacaille. Not yet. You are too fond of evasive answers, and grandstanding. But the cause you present is good one, one I can respect. I vill join that, and prepare for vorst. And should you be liar and become true enemy... I vill be prepared for that." He eventually said, giving Nico a respectful nod. It was the closest thing to happy acceptance he was willing to give at the moment. He would have to wait and see if Nico's words had merit.

"Very well so... when do we start."

Then unable to help himself he turns his attention to Nikolai and addresses him.  His
green eyes suddenly sharp and appraising.

"Look I know its not exactly my business, but we may soon be in a life and death stakes situation so I need to understand you.  If you are so mistrustful of Nico why advertise the fact why not bide your time until you could act effectively before revealing you position"

"I am not particularly mistrustful of him. No more than I am of rest of you. I do not like first impression he makes, with vagueness and arrogance. I do find his idea to have merit, now that it is clear vhat his motives are. So I lay down ground rule, make my position clear. I vill participate, but I do not consider him friend, nor blindly follow. Partnership vith no preconceived notions of friendship or trust is best baseline. Ve can vork upwards from there. That is all. I do not trust, yet. But neither vill I lie or skulk. Yet. Besides, Lacaille has surely studied us intensely before choosing us. He know how ve think, how ve are like to act. Lying vould be pointless and detrimental in long run." Nikolai retorted after a moments consideration, returning Gregory's gaze. He held it for a moment, before deciding that the conversation was over and going back to studying Nico.

"No offense, Mr. Nico, but that seems awfully vague," Daniel said, listening as the others spoke. "It kind of sounds like you have something more specific in mind."

He was a bit surprised by Nikolai. Apparently the man liked forthrightness, although maybe not Daniel's kind of forthrightness? It was all just very confusing at the moment.

The scared boy, though two years older than Marianne, such a meek and gentle girl, found himself turning to her for safety and comfort. He leaned in, his head on her chest as if he were no more than eight years old. His hair spilt over his neck as he put his face to the floor, revealing a deep, jagged scar across the back of his neck, an old one, not the new small pink line from the surgery they'd all had. His hand came to her shoulder as he clung to her, taking deep breaths to calm his racing heart. Her heartbeat echoed in his ear, steady and soothing.

Re: Intro
A lull in the conversation always did equate to a proper moment for an entrance.   Unfortunately, this one is a little more on the conspicuous side, as the girl is basically given a Heave-Ho from the security guard to send her into the room... She seems up to the challenge however, as he hits the ground rolling and pops back up like a Prize Fighter.   She growls at the man, and says over a shoulder, "Hey, Bossman... You need to keep your dogs in line.   They touch me again, they are gonna lose fingers."

Although, she does finally look over at the assembled group, and drops her hands.   The argument with the Help was all about done by this point.  She was delivered to the meeting.  Dom comments, "And I heard most of what's going on... They had it playing on the radio or some such thing on the way over.   So I know you're asking who's whats and things thereof.   However... The one question I got, that Ivan over there didn't ask... is that 'Do you know what ya doin?' ... I don't know much about Math.  Suck at Science, and terrible at English... but, what I do know is History, and Movies.   I seen this plot somewhere before.   Bunch of kids taken just before their prime and fed to the machine.   Assassin's Creed or something.  Are you the Assassins or Abstergo?"

She realizes at this point... she's definitely rambling.   When that happens... it's best to get a breath of air in...
