Intro
The test was surprisingly easy. It asked not about skills that the children had, or asked to solve any complex math or science question, but personal questions about the person's social life, overall stress levels, and hobbies.

It took a astounding three days for the test results to get back to the applicants. The results were posted on bulletin boards in schools, with a note that all accepted applicants were to get a letter in the mail. Said letter gave a pickup date asked for the children to pack a bag with personal belongings and clothes, however no electronic devices. Letters for communication were acceptable, though.

If the applicant was under the age of 18, then two agents would have shown up at their doorsteps, and had a long conversation with the applicant's parents or guardians. In order to become candidates, aforementioned parents and/or guardians would have had to sign a long paper.

Five days before the pickup date, the candidates would have mysteriously fallen ill and would have been rushed to the hospital to undergo surgery on the back of the neck. Said illness had been explained as a spasm in the vertebrae of the spine, which would have led to the entire chain of nerves being destroyed. However every candidate was ensured that the problem was solved and were cleared with a clean bill of health.

The candidates were flown to a private hangar, then loaded into individual panel vans, with two heavily armed guards at each side of each person. After what seemed to be at least an hour. They were escorted outside of the van, to what seemed to be beautiful wooded mountains with a giant metallic compound behind a waterfall. The children wait in an lush courtyard, unaware that somebody is watching them from the main balcony.

Arthur had had an interesting few days; as soon as he'd received the letter, his school had sent him back home to his family to prepare for...it had been really vague, and Arthur had been meaning to look it up before he'd gotten sick and never actually got a chance to. But while he was there, he'd been almost a local celebrity in his small town; not only was he the guy who got a full ride scholarship to one of the most prestigious schools in Canada, now he'd been selected for an even more elite program.

It was a little weird, though; he wasn't used to armed guards at a school (much less two per person!), and no one seemed to be willing to explain what exactly this was all about. Still, this was a school function, right? This was all happening with him and his fellow students in mind, so he'd have to be enthusiastic and cooperative, and prove he deserved the considerable expense that this facility clearly entailed.

Daniel was... quiet. Despite the sudden medical issues, and despite being escorted by armed guards, he seemed more or less at peace with his situation. Or, at the very least, he didn't seem to think making trouble was worth it.

He wasn't all that bright, he knew, but he was strong- one of the strongest people in his school, which was dedicated to athletics. If worse came to worst, he had even odds of being able to deal with his armed escort in such close quarters. But instead of seeking violence, he read from the Bible. In times of trouble, God had given him guidance, and he strongly suspected trouble was in his very near future.

The blonde boy who was being escorted out of the next van to arrive looked skittish, as if he'd never been told as a child that the monsters under his bed weren't real. His posture was stiff, his gaze flickering uncertainly between the two boys already here and his surroundings. The glasses on his face were pushed back into position with a slightly shaking hand, his bag clutched tightly in the other. A neatly fixed white collar and black cravat under a brown vest bespoke an attire perhaps a century or three behind current fashion, but dressy nonetheless. Loose, slightly messy hair looked as if an attempt had been made at styling it, but it was an attempt that had failed before it even began.

Both Daniel and Arthur were given looks by the boy as if he was trying to figure them out without staring, and as if they might bite off his head merely for the idea of his golden brown eyes landing upon their own. He managed to approach within about ten yards of them before stopping, glanced over his shoulder, and then went back to watching his surroundings, presumably for potential threats.

Arthur noticed Adrian fairly quickly - he was the first person he'd seen here that looked roughly in his age range. The other boy seemed ill at ease, so Arthur decided to approach him. It was important to show leadership qualities, right? "Hi there. My name's Arthur. It looks like we're going to be classmates, yes?" Arthur's English was excellent, with just a hint of Quebecois accent. He gave Adrian a slightly awkward but sympathetic smile, an acknowledgement that both of them were a little out of their depths.

Isao didn't like the guards. He had only ever seen one person in his life surrounded by people meant to protect them, and that was his precious お嬢様。 If Mai was here, she would have been thrilled. There were plenty of people that she could treat like children. They could all pretend that they were a family even. The lawyer loved the idea of raising a family with his love, but picking up random children wasn't exactly how he wanted to go about it. Well, at least one person there seemed to be the same age as him.

When the folks from the project had caught him at the worst time. Isao hadn't been sleeping well since before they showed up, however, once they had told him they would pick him up shortly, he fell ill. They had said it was a muscle spasm. Though he didn't understand much about biology, he doubted it. At the hospital he had pressed for as much information as possible - but the doctors were tight lipped. If anything happened to him because of the surgery - anything that distressed the woman who had held his hand as he went under - he would certainly make his first case one against the D.C. Doctors for medical malpractice.

Not that his life was worth much, but Mai's mental health was.

He had been even more groggy than usual after the surgery. Walking through the world in a tired yet restless daze. The fog had only cleared once the agents arrived at the apartment Mai had rented with him. Though his fight or flight response threatened to kick in and he wanted to tell the agents to leave him be. That he didn't want to leave the house... His precious Mai had wished him luck and given him a journal and a pen. It was a bright blue color, something that he could see his lover adoring... But it was special. Not because it had spaces in the margins for doodling, but because it came from her.

So, he clutched the journal in his hands as he watched the group congregate in the courtyard. Loathing the guards, missing Mai, and hoping that everything would be fine.

Daniel stepped forward to greet everyone. "Hello, everyone," he said to the group. "I hope the day finds you all well." He's not smiling, per se, but there is a general pleasantness about Aldrin that makes his greeting seem genuine in its statement of well wishes. It's a bit unnerving, really.

Nikolai was displeased. As if it hadn't been bad enough that he had apparently succeeded in the odd test, or psych evaluation they had undergone, he had fallen "ill".
A surgery in the neck, due to some sort of infection in the spine, they had said...
He had absolutely no proof of foul play, but that did not calm the intense young man at all.
He felt that this whole thing had become more and more alarming and suspicious with every new development. Mostly he hated that he was going into this with so little information.
It went against everything his father had taught him. But his father wanted him in this mysterious program the foreigners had made, and Nikolai followed orders.
Still, the surgery, the sudden inexplicable illness and the general secrecy... It made him highly uncomfortable. Adding to that, it would seem that he would not be alone in this, judging by the other young people gathered here. Nikolai fervently hoped that socialising was not an integral part of this project. He was not here to make friends.

For the moment he would keep some distance from these strangers and observe them as well as he could. They seemed as lost as he, and barring one of them they seemed much too young to be involved in secret projects. What are the people behind this planning that involves a kid no more than twelve or thirteen years old? is there perhaps to be some indoctrination involved. A child would certainly be easier to influence...
Nikolai's musings were briefly disturbed by the musclebound yankees greeting, to which he returned a curt nod before going back to his thinking.

Stepping out of the armored van, Josh wasn't sure what to think.

He and his parents had talked long and hard about this little excursion when the two men had shown up at his house with their forms, and although Josh was initially hesitant, they had eventually talked him into accepting his candidacy.

Then the neck spasm (or whatever it was) had taken him completely by surprise, sending him into a panic that his hockey career was over.  Luckily, the emergency surgery seemed to have an almost unbelievably short recovery time, and Josh could honestly say that he felt as good as new, though the unusually well-armed guards hardly put his mind at ease.

He recognized the skinny kid across the courtyard as the "child genius" or whatever from West Creek that all the teachers seemed to adore.  Josh had never met him personally before, but he knew enough about him to know that they had virtually no aligning interests.  What was this program anyway?

He heard a greeting from an Irish accent and looked up.  Josh wasn't used to looking people in the eye, but the young man who had stepped out and started speaking looked to be about as muscular as he was.  If there were any sports competitions here, it was easy to see who the two captains would be.

Adrian startled when the other boy said something, clearly not expecting words to come out of the boy's mouth addressed towards him. While the boy who approached him looked to be about his own age and build, perhaps of roughly equal ability to his own, there was a courage about him that very nearly frightened Adrian. However, he stood his ground (almost). Okay, he took two steps back from the other boy. But then he held his ground.

"H-hi. M-my name i-is Adrian. It does l-look l-like we are going to be c-classm-mates." Aside from the bad stutter, his words felt odd, as if he was simply politely mimicking Arthur for lack of knowing what else to say. However, he wasn't immediately hostile, possibly even seemed like a nice kid, so that was something.

Adrian brushed the sleeve of his slightly-too-large white dress shirt back an inch to check the time on his watch, then glanced over to the crowd that was forming, and took another half-step back for good measure. Unlike the school where he could study on his own most of the time, this bunching of people was beginning to look like a crowd.

Arthur maintained his friendly smile, but inwardly he was kicking himself. Of course he was startled, Arthur approaching him out of the blue like that! Not two minutes into a new school, and he'd already screwed things up. He had to try to salvage things, hopefully without making it too obvious.

He gave no sign he noticed Adrian backing away, but didn't try to close the distance before he talked. "Well, it was nice to meet you. Maybe we can hang out sometime - I ran a study group back home, maybe there'll be one here too?" He tried to sound friendly, but not insistent, giving Adrian plenty of space to politely refuse.

Daniel chuckled at Arthur's statement. "I'll feel odd, studying with someone so young, but I guess you had to be pretty smart to get here, right?" He cracked his neck, and offered a hand to Arthur. "Name's Daniel," he said with a distinct Irish accent. "Nice to meet you."

Very slowly making her way out of the back of the van, Mary seemed to be struggling forward with a rucksack nearly the same size as she was. She didn't particularity know where she was walking to,  but followed the voices of the other students. Winding up behind a group of guys talking among themselves, Mary set her pack onto the floor with a dull thud.

"Excuse me... sir?"

Studying... Nikolai thought as he listened to the other youths getting to know each other. He almost felt like sneering when the bulky irishman mentioned it, but he kept his face carefully without expression. He didn't really feel like sharing his thoughts with these people. But on the other hand, they were here, and it would do none of them any favours for some of them to go in ignorant or with false impressions of what awaited.
"You should not expect much studies. At least not of normal kind." He interjected, not caring at all that he was interrupting their conversation.
"This is top secret project, highly guarded. It will not be ordinary happenings. Likely, it will be experiments on us. Physical, mental or social experiments. Perhaps all of them. Question is, whether it will be humane experiments." He continued, his intense gaze settling on Daniel as he spoke. He did not blink while talking. He found that it helped others maintain their focus on him if he was slightly disconcerting in his behaviour.
"It is wise to be wary, Daniel." He added, after a moment. He then turned away, having said his piece.

Just as he turned away from them, however, he came face to face... Well, face to top of the head with a short girl. Another child!? What exactly are they planning? He thought as the timid little thing adressed him.
Standing at his full height as eh was, it was hard for Nikolai NOT to gaze balefully down at her. It was how he looked, after all. Not that he ever bothered to correct it.
"Da? Vat is it, girl" He said as he studied Marianne with a neutral, almost clinical gaze.

"The books are heavy. I just wanted to know where the rooms are."

Mary said, not moving her eyes from the downcast position they'd been in while she was carrying her large rucksack. She expected the large man to have the answers, though she didnt catch what they were talking about.

Allison tried her hardest not to scratch at the back of her neck, but it was so hard to resist!  Her nanny had even gone so far as to threaten to put one of those lampshade like collars on her like dogs wore if she didn't stop.

Despite the discomfort she was still smiling, the test at school had been an entry for a contest of some sorts and she'd won!  At least that's what she thought, they'd tried to explain it but she'd drifted off into her own little world when they told her.

Anyone observing her would see that Allie was quite pretty, but more than a casual glance would reveal that she was as vacant as an old Blockbuster's store.

"So many people." she said with a thick French accent and a tone of delight, "I 'ope many friends will be made!"

Adrian hesitated at Arthur's words, not entirely sure what the polite method of saying he studied by himself was, that he didn't have any experience with study groups aside from the one he'd been forced into that made it harder for him to study rather than easier. "Ah... o-okay..." He tried to leave the okay vague, there was no way he was gonna be purposefully rude or purposefully make the other kid mad at him-

...and then the girl that just showed up with a heavy bag caught Adrian's eye. He trailed off, looking rather fascinated at the girl who had something wrong with her eye, and obvious scarring semi-hidden by her hair but impossible to hide completely. In this so-called perfect world, it was certainly a lot rarer to see scarring that severe, and as such Adrian's sentence and thought both trailed off as he did his absolute best not to stare and failed entirely. Yes, he was being entirely rude, but rudeness was sort of forgotten as he stared at the disfigurement, utterly intrigued by it.

Much to his displeasure, acknowledging the little girl had caused not only the boisterous Daniel, but yet another young girl to sidle over and strike up conversation. Since it seemed that the whole group talk was moving over to where he was, Nikolai decided that he did not want to be there. So many people at once? He would be hard pressed not to yell profanities, or even worse, accidentally tell them something they had no business knowing.
"Yes. He helps you. Good. I go now." He said to the timid girl, before walking about 30 feet away from them. That should be far enough. God willing the overly enthusiastic french girl would not follow. He couldn't handle those kinds of people at all.
"Father, I truly hope the secrets of this place is worth the headaches I will surely suffer..." Nikolai said to himself.
