Hi! I'm Nintaku, a long time gamer with some experience with Apocalypse-derived games and far more experience with supers games. Just now getting acquainted with Masks playbooks, but since my experience tells me this type of game prefers no two players share the same playbook, I'd rather toss out my preferences than just call something.

I'm leaning toward using the Bull and the Doomed. I could pretty easily use any of the others if anybody's got a strong itch for those, but those two spring to mind right off the bat. (I have a habit of recycling characters, and I've got a pair that fit those beautifully.)

What's everyone else into? :D

Hey everybody! I am leaning towards the Delinquent or the Transformed, but I could also do outsider or Legacy.

Alright, we have four players on board. One of you (sbodmann) brought up the idea of me posting an example post that would explain 4 and 5 from the rtj. I may go about doing that. :)

Anywho, I welcome you all.

One thing that bothers me, however is whether or not I should make a separate thread for character creation? It will kind of control and organize information, but I also know it may be a bit 'too much' for some. Thoughts on this?

Hello everyone. Looking forward to playing some Masks.

I'm most interested in playing the Janus. If that's taken, then the Outsider followed by the Nova would be my top choices. I'm generally keen on characters with one power or schtick that looks for clever ways to use it. That said, I've been brushing up on my Spanish lately, so I have a masked luchador Bull idea rattling around in my cabeza. But then, just about any superhero would vaguely work as a luchador, so...we'll see.

As for the split thread for character creation, I can see pros and cons of keeping it here or splitting it off, so I'm neutral.

So based on the top two choices:

Nintaku- Bull or Doomed

drfeck (keep thinking Walter Peck for some reason)- Delinquent or Transformed

Liblarva- Janus or Outsider

Seeing there is no over lap yet and that we have two more people yet to give playbook considerations (btw, welcome DaGregor!), I think it's safe to say that each of you have a good chance of landing at least one of your top two picks.

@Liblarva

If you do pick Janus, you will have TWO player accounts. One for Heroic Identity and One for Civilian. Based on the Janus playbook, it's super important to distinguish those two identities.

I don't really see much need for a separate character creation thread in itself, though perhaps a thread to consolidate ideas we've set in stone. I'm in another game right now that's got almost a thousand posts in the OOC chat, but that's where /all/ of our info on character roles and mutual histories is hidden. It'd certainly be nice to have someplace to look for stuff like our team name, who does what, all that stuff.

So I suppose now that most of us have dropped playbook suggestions down, we should flesh out the ideas a little more and try to find bits of other PCs to grab onto, maybe help each other lean toward one playbook or another, yeah?

Bull - Ricochet. Martial arts child actress who eventually got powers, got a lot of her people hurt because she tried to be a hero without a real team or plan, and now is fueled by guilt.

Doomed - Indigo, a superhero fanboy turned psychic growing into his powers. His nemesis is a version of himself powerful enough to pull his way through universes, draining the mental energies from his other selves. Kinda like The One.

liblarva, I am pretty darn sure this entire game could be run in a lucha-verse and it would be fantastic. I'm not ready for that myself, but picture it: an Outsider luchador. Voiced by Young Danny Trejo.

Agree on not really needing a separate chargen thread.

My playbook choices would be Beacon or Transformed. Nova would be third.

In reply to The Watcher (msg # 6):

I get where you're coming from, but that seems like it would be far more headache than it's worth. If you're adamant on that point, I would choose a different playbook simply to avoid having to deal with that.

Things would get really awkward really fast. One typical scene from comic book Janus' is the reveal. Where you start the scene in costume or out, then take off the mask or put it on to drive home the fact that you're a superhero or that you're a part of the person's regular life, like the nerdy kid in your science class that turns out to be Spider-Man. Having to swap accounts just to pull that off seems onerous. Or scenes where you're in one identity but have to handle something from the other ID, which are the bread and butter of the Janus. Two accounts would just make that more trouble than it's worth.

Hm. In terms of posting, the only real extra work would be swapping which character you want to post as in the top left, so that part might not be too bad. But it doesn't look like you'd really need two sheets any more than anyone else. All that happens is a switch between Mundane and your chosen Label, right? That's easy enough to mark down.

Update (overlaps in bold):

Nintaku- Bull or Doomed

drfeck- Delinquent or Transformed

Liblarva- Janus or Outsider

sbodmann- Beacon or Transformed

@Liblarva

It's cool. One account is fine.

@Nintaku

Ricochet was the kinetic controller, right? Also, keep in mind the Bull's backstory. Specifically:

From the playbook:
Who changed you?
How did you escape from them?

The questions establishes that "someone" (heavily implied Weapon X like organization or project) gave Ricochet her powers and she escaped from them.

@everyone
Also, it seems that a majority prefer to keep playbook discussion here. So it shall stay here.

You remembered! :D Oh man, that was from way back when MHR was first a thing. Yeah, I've been thinking on how to get Ricochet to work in the context of the Bull.

Different universe, so not a mutant. Instead, I was thinking her crew went to go film out on location someplace far from most prying eyes and things went bad. Everyone was nabbed and used for experiments, which led to Rico developing (and possibly others) powers. Then she gathered her childlike courage, because teenagers believe they're invincible even before they're made literally invincible, and led her crew on a daring escape which got them all killed because she was careless and didn't realize things don't really work like in the movies.

And that would have been the end of her career, and the beginning of her running into other PCs until they formed the team.

Sorry I was at work during the earlier flurry of posts. I have looked over the playbooks, and they all seem very interesting. Unlike other superhero games, characters are not based on their powers per se, but more based on their background and outlook (and occasionally the source of their powers). But a particular power set (to borrow the MHR term) could potentially be built in several playbooks.

OK, after reading the full text of the Masks website, the background is a little clearer. In a world (or at least a city) where superheroes are common and have been for several decades, maybe it isn't necessary to have a single origin, it is enough to have some kind of unifying story.

I was considering playing an Outsider who was sent to Earth, and Halcyon City specifically, during the Golden Age. Knowing it would take some time in transit, his home race/planet/place sent him in a sort of suspended animation aboard a ship. However, when he landed it was 50 years after he had been launched, so all the Halcyon City heroes he was shown and told about are long dead (pesky humans with their short life-spans!). Instead of landing in a "shining beacon on a hill" where valiant heroes fought battles against the obviously corrupt villains, now he suddenly finds himself in a world with more blurred lines: corporate hero sponsorship, organized hero teams with rules and regulations, a literal and figurative hierarchy of heroes, etc. (Admittedly, I am picturing the Ultimate Marvel character
Mahr Vehl a bit here). Leaning heavily on his Superior label, he is still committed to doing good but is quite snarky about it - he mostly means it in good fun (he is on their side, after all) but it could often be taken the wrong way.

I also have an idea for a Transformed, a young girl whose overprotective father tries to keep her like a delicate flower, not always to her wishes. Until by some freak occurrence/accident/etc. her skin takes on a crystalline structure. This tinges her skin a metallic red/orange color, but also renders her almost invulnerable. Now, having grown up with ballet and piano recitals, she can easily punch through a wall or survive a head-on collision with a car. While she enjoys the adventuring life, her overbearing father is as big of a hindrance as any villain. (This one seems a bit too straightforward, pairing the opposite traits together. But it could work, with the father being a very present NPC. This was partly inspired by a trait I gave Jessica Jones in a local RPG called "Kick your ass in skinny jeans")

I can think of others, but those are the first two that came to mind. Let me know what you guys think.

Oh man, those are some neat ideas. I gotta say, though, I'm really interested in seeing the Transformed concept. I don't think the straightforwardness of pairing the opposite traits together is a bad thing by any means. Maybe the obvious thing, but it works really well and there are a lot of neat things you can do with it.

I'm envisioning a sort of Beast crossed with Toph Beifong, and it's a really good mix.

I am seeing a lot of people wanting to be transformed, but none of them want Delinquent. So I think I should go with that.

Does anybody have access to the other templates offered by the kickstarter for Masks? I never got mine for some reason.

In reply to drfeck (msg # 15):

Yeah, I'm more into Beacon, so unless there's an objection, I'll go there.

I found free playbooks on the masks website.

DaGregor's transformed sounds a lot like Ruby Summers to me. Maybe not the eyebeams, but the look.

How closely do we need to stick to the powers listed in the playbooks? For example, I'd like size changing (maybe just shrinking) for The Beacon. It's not listed on the playbook, but "Camouflage and Stealth" is. Could we explain the camouflage and stealth as shrinking?

Hi everyone! Glad I could sneak in!

I'm looking toward taking the Nova role, since it seemed the least sought-after currently...something gravity based, and definitely in the Locked Down attitude at first..

Oh no, two doctors?!

Now that I think about it, I like both the character ideas I posted, but I think I would play better as the Outsider.
