Charlie - Cowboy

Born in 1901 on a Wyoming ranch, Charlie Casterly practically grew up on a horse.  He could ride by the age of 6, helped heard cattle at 10, and was breaking mustangs at 13.  He could lasso a running a calf at 50 feet and have it tied for branding in less than 10 seconds.  And he learned to shoot.  There were a lot of predators to protect the cattle from snakes, wolves, the occasional bear, and on occasion the worst predator - humans, rustlers to be more exact.  Everything his family owned was in their ranch, the horses, and the herd.  While he never had to shoot anyone he did have to shoot in the air to scare them off.

That was at least until Pancho Villa came across the border.  As a 14 year old he helped his father and the other hands drive horses down to New Mexico to sell to the U.S. Cavalry.  Only Villa and his gang of bandits bushwacked the lot of them, stole most of the horses, and killed his father.  Villa and his gang made off with almost 100 horses.  Under the cover of night, filled the bravado and ignorance of youth, Charlie stole 20 of them back and almost got himself killed in the process.

When he reach home in Wyoming the family had to sell the ranch.  They had been counting on the money from the horses to keep the farm afloat.

For years Charlie drifted from ranch to ranch as a cattle hand and wrangler.  And then one day a movie producer happened to be visiting a ranch in California and saw Charlie do some of his rope tricks.  He was hired that day to work in Hollywood as stunt man and trick performer.  He was on a hunting trip with Mr. Zanuck where he met Scout.  They became fast friends and when Scout decided to head north again, Charlie went along.
