Story Synopsis
Date: Tuesday, Feb 2 1932.
Mickey and Doc are employees of Irish gangster Jack ‘Legs’ Diamond (deceased), and are on the run from the New York cops who were in the employ of Dutch Schultz and wasted their boss.
The 4 year old float plane carries 180 bottles (20 cases) of hooch ordered by Legs. It is painted with a Milk of Magnesia logo. Aboard the plane are Amelia, Rene, a French surveyor who is helping her, a cowboy, the pilot and his Native American assistant.
Mickey and Doc were due to collect the booze, but they thought it had been paid for. Flyboy and Scout have not been paid, though. A Canadian gangster called Paul has pocketed the cash. Mickey and Doc get aboard the plane as a police car approaches.
Flyboy takes the plane to Burlington, in the hope of buying fuel and selling the booze. There are some tensions as it appears the locals are in the pay of Dutch Schultz, but they fail to get a message to kill the visitors, thanks to Scout. Amelia pretends to be an actress.
The party picks up an African who pretends to be leading them to a fishing venue for a movie shot. In reality, he is escaping from the local bad guys and shows them a place to hide their illicit stash for a while.
The plane takes off, and lands on Silver Lake, at a trapper’s cabin pointed out by Munro, the African. The party has dinner, they unload their booze in the woods, leave Rene and a drunk Doc at the cabin, and the rest of them fly to Lake Placid.
The plane ties up at a jetty on Lake Placid, most of the party go to a speakeasy in the local sawmill, while Amelia asks Flyboy to taxi her across the lake to the Lake Placid Lodge, where she has a reservation.
In the sawmill, Si, Mickey and Charlie meet some other people and are offered a bed for the night in the barn.
When Iain, Munro and Amelia go across to Lake Placid Lodge, they are met by a man called Ed Henry, who is a plane designer and offers to help Iain install a new ignition system in his plane. It's costly and will lay the plane up for a day or so, but Iain thinks it'll be money well spent and agrees to meet Ed on 4th at Mitchell's Boat Repair on Sarnac Lake for the upgrade.
Amelia installs Munro in the servants' quarters, posing as her valet, and meets Horace, the concierge. She is introduced to her room maid, Bernice, and turns in for the night.
Chronicler's Assumption:
Iain returns to the sawmill and meets Mickey, who tells him he has a customer lined up for the whiskey, so Iain flies back to Silver Lake to pick up the booze and, now that they have a place to stay, he picks up Doc and Rene, too, bringing them all back to the sawmill for the night.
