In reply to Alaric von Innsbruck (msg # 33):

...if he plays a quixotic cleric who believes he's channeling the divine grace of banjo the clown, that could indeed be distracting.

I agree that gothic horror is all about tone and theme, and a farting mastiff has little place in either.

However.

A cleric who has been driven insane by the horrors he's seen and the suffering he's undone...and failed to undo...such that he has forsaken his order and taken up with a nonsense god because it's the only way he can make sense of such a callous, unfeeling world and those who truly govern it? That seems to fit. The only question is how he'd still have his powers, but that's something I trust our mighty DM to resolve without much trouble :)

Well, yes.

But in that case, he'd have to call the false god Chubbs...

Stop talking in my color, Matt!!! It's cultural appropriation and I don't appreciate it.

Clutch decision time, folks! Should I burn them to cinders, or calm them down using a series of masterful animal handling checks?*

*Obviously not a real question. Animal Handling it is! :P

Also, now that I've had the chance to see your concerns, let me say that I think I play Smeven the hung gnome as straight as possible considering I've only ever used my schlong for ID purposes.  Everyone else makes jokes OOC though, I'd have to say that's on them...

How many wolves could I hit with a 15-foot cone without burning an ally given their current configuration? I'm having a hard time picturing it.

Currently, Tobias is on the ground with two wolves standing over him.  Astrid is right next to them.

About five feet away, Alaric has a wolf on him.

So...three wolves could be hit with a 15-foot cone?

Do party members could as "creatures"?

Yes.

[Sorry for the lack of map.  I couldn't be arsed to make one for a simple first combat.  (I don't think we had one for that first Aeryis fight where Boreas hid in some bushes while Maeve and Lyriel got shot full of arrows.  Ah, memories.)  For more complicated future ones, we'll definitely have a visual representation.]

Yeah I didn't start to use maps until there were multiple AOEs and AOOs and such to keep tracking. I don't mind the lack of maps, but it does sometimes create situations like this one where a little clarification is needed. No worries at all!

So...in updating, I took your "yes" above to mean "yes, I can strike all 3 wolves with my cone", and did so. If I caught somebody else in the blast, I'm very sorry and that wasn't my intent. Dex saves for half, and...um...hopefully the cleric lives and can heal you.

I promise Oz wouldn't burn you on purpose.

Yeah, having a party member who specializes in AoE that isn't smart targeting probably means maps will be helpful going forward, lol.

If there's a FEAT or metamagic boost that works like Sculpt Spell or Careful Spell used to, that might help as well.

Rather than make Sarah do a combat disposition writeup for one injured wolf, I just went ahead and took my turn. I think that wraps up combat, except for the dying dude.

Yeah pretty sure at 30' away there's no way to get where the cone hits all the wolves and not us.  The "yes" was in response to "Do party members count as creatures?"  We do.

Nice thing about 5e is you don't need a map to track AoOs.  AoEs, though, might warrant one.  There is a metamagic ability called "Careful Spell" that allows you to let some allies auto-succeed their saves vs. an AoE, but it doesn't let you miss them entirely.

Also, round fractions down.

I left it as a fraction so it could be rounded up or down, whichever was warranted. Now we know!

So if I had to hit allies, do I get to choose which ones? I don't know is where my 30 feet of movement begins relative to you or to the wolves. Also I thought they closed some of that distance.

Yeah.  I'll let it slide this time because I don't feel like retconning a pretty uneventful fight and also because this was partially a "my bad," but in the future note that spells such as burning hands do NOT selectively target baddies and leave your friends unharmed.  They just incinerate everybody.  "Creature" in the spell description refers to any entity that gets caught in your blast.

While Chris is right that you technically don't need maps for 5e combat, I this that goes to show that things will be a lot smoother if we have some sort of visual representation, for myself not least of all.  Matt has some interesting ideas for how we can improve on the spreadsheets used in the Aeryis game, and Chris and I are exploring the potential of using Google Slides for mapping purposes.  Stay tuned for more!

I doubt you're going to take him any more seriously once his chosen portrait gets approved.
