So just how much gold was in the bag, did anyone ever actually count it?

In reply to Joaquin (msg # 136):

Nico counted it and split it up among the group, saving some for general expenses. It's not a whole heck of a lot -- I don't think I'll be purchasing anything at this juncture.

We probably will gain access to more treasure at some point soonish, however, or at least the promise of the same, else Alaric will leave the party (Witchers only work on contracts).

So for reference, I can either make holy water by using 25gp of powdered silver + first level spell slot or just buy it for 25gp according to the PHB.  It seems like a waste of spell slot to make it if we can just buy it, or obtain a supply from the village priest.

Thoughts?

In reply to Joaquin (msg # 139):

The spell slot method is useful if we're far from the nearest town. I'm absolutely in favor of seeing if this other priest can make holy water for us, though.

Healing potions are 50 gold. I think I'd rather have more of those than holy water, all things considered. I vote for saving our money unless there's something you desperately need.

Then again, I've never been the sort to invest in alchemist's fire and tanglefoot bags, so if ya'll want some toys go nuts :)

In that case I suppose we should have the silver available for making the holy water later.  The math seems weird to me, 5lbs of silver is 25gp and the cost of holy water is 25gp, seems like if you make it yourself it ought to cost less than just buying it since I'm using my own magic to make it happen.  Is that how other crafting type things work in 5e?

So, I can make holy water as well.  Or at least I will once I get to level two but I am rethinking the importance of holy water as it is only 2d6 damage unless I am mistaken.  At 25gp, an hour, and a spell slot that seems like a high cost for such small damage.

Fair enough about the holy water.  Assuming the father just gives us some, we'll have it, but I'm not sure it is worth the money for now.

Being able to spray a horde of zombies with a round of all-around holy water pelting has its appeal, but I agree that we're too poor at the moment to do it.

Sorry for Nico's silence lately; I've been busier than usual at work and haven't wanted to spend any additional time in front of my PC (no pun intended).

I have a few comments to catch up on on various things:

Re: clerical spells:
[0th level] I recommend Sacred Flame, Spare the Dying and Light as cantrips. Sacred Flame seems particularly good since it does radiant damage at will. Spare the Dying is nice to stabilize folks without a spell slot. Light is just light; no effect on undead or anything as far as I know, but it keeps us from needing torches or lanterns.

[1st level] I definitely recommend Guiding Blot (4d6 radiant!), even more so in this campaign. At low levels (when we might drop from one big hit), I prefer Healing Word to Cure Wounds, because HW has a 60' range (vs. touch for CW) and is a bonus action (vs. regular action). The drawback is that it only heals d4 instead of d8 (both get + modifier), so having both isn't a bad idea either. Detect Evil seems pretty handy for this campaign in particular. I also like Shield of Faith if you still have another spell to pick.

Re: silvered weapons, I think we should prioritize the characters who have no cantrips (or other magical means of attack). In other words, maybe me and Tobias first? Possibly Alaric too- I have no idea what he can do. As for Astrid, does she have any damage spells, e.g., Vicious Mockery or Thunderwave? Vicious Mockery might be a good cantrip to pick considering I don't think undead and the like are immune to psychic damage. I could be wrong, but yes- I think you can taunt undead, and it hurts their feelings. That is awesome.

Re: shopping, Nico will buy a sling and ammo (bludgeoning damage, just in case), but should otherwise be good for now... I want to upgrade from leather to studded leather as soon as possible, but can't afford it yet (45 gp for studded).

I will post something in the main thread sometime tonight; I'll try not to backtrack too much.

Alaric is almost exclusively a physical damage dealer, especially low level. Silvered weapons are a priority for him IC, and OOC probably up there with you.

No worries, Nico/Scott!  I'm going to Atlanta for a long weekend as of tomorrow afternoon, and Chris will be in DC for Unpub, so things should be a bit leisurely and allow you a chance to read up on all the excitement that's gone down :)

Here's the TLDR in case you don't want to do that:

--You met Ireena.  She's a pretty cool chick.
--She thinks you're cute.
--Alaric diagnosed her as future vampire spawn unless we act soon.
--You have collectively decided to leave the village to try and find a powerful cleric and/or a way to kill Strahd.
--But first the siblings want to bury their dead dad.  That will happen later tonight.

With this, Nico briefly touches Ireena on the hand in sympathy (not in a creepy way), and pats Ismark on the side of his arm (also not in a creepy way).

I've been following along on my phone, but figured it would be annoying to post from there. I still thoroughly enjoyed the TLDR summary, nonetheless.

I'll have to double check his character sheet, but I don't think Nico has proficiency in ball juggling... :)

I think clerics can change prepared spells after any long rest. Except cantrips- those are permanent I think. Though I imagine Sarah would let you change any that you haven't used yet...

Yeah, if you were leveling up "normally" you'd be able to swap your spells, so go crazy and do so if you like.

So yeah, it turns out that the Ravenloft module is a lot deadlier than I would have thought.  The book claims that it is suitable for 4-6 players of levels 1-10, but based on the CR of a lot of the shit out there, that's not really the case.  Hence your quick level up.  Depending on how things go, you might gain a fast-pass level up to level 3 not so far down the road.  We'll see.

Also, because Chris is going out of town this weekend, this is a great time to explain the idea of "Autofollow."

Typically, it's reasonable to expect that you'll be checking the boards at least once every 48 hours or so and writing a short post.  Sometimes that's just not feasible though.  So if you need a break for a bit, let me know and I can set your character to be on autofollow.

This means that you're still with the party, just kind of hanging out in the background not really talking; doing your own thing.  You also gain very sturdy plot armor for the duration of your leave of absence.  Because I want you to be there taking it all in when you die horribly.

Just wanted to make clear that while I quite like the character of Tobias, I like the idea of a really deadly campaign.  I can always draft a new PC.

There's a possible fight coming up that would have just pasted us as 1st level characters.  Sarah and I ran a test and got destroyed, even with some pretty decent luck on the side of the players.  I'm down for a hard campaign too, though.  Hard is fun, but only if it's at least possible to win.

However, there's a huge difference between 1st and 2nd level, and we should be a lot more capable now.  The next big jump is 4th to 5th.
