Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
The Old Svalich Road meanders into a valley watched over by dark, brooding mountains to the north and south. The woods recede, revealing a sullen mountain burg surrounded by a wooden palisade. Thick fog presses up against this wall, as though looking for a way inside, hoping to catch the town aslumber.

Heading down the hill, the road ends at a set of sturdy iron gates with a pair of shadowy figures standing behind them. Planted in the ground and flanking the road outside the gates are a half-dozen pikes with wolves' heads impaled on them.

In reply to DM (msg # 1):

"Cheerful," Oz remarks as the group approaches. "Haven't seen much wild game for wolves to hunt around here. Are humans their primary prey in Barovia?"

"Honestly, this is a bit unusual," Ismark replies, as the party nears the gates of Vallaki and is able to examine the grisly trophies closer.

"In Barovia village, you occasionally have someone picked off by wolves, but it doesn't happen constantly.  Perhaps they have a larger wolf problem here."

Oz nods thoughtfully.

I can't say I find their decorating to my tastes.... Says Tobias, eyeing the piked heads warily.

Ismark, is there much in the way of an Inn here?

There's been plenty of game, if you know where to look, Alaric replies to Oz. The number of wolves may indeed by high for the area, but I saw no evidence of scarcity of food.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Ismark answers in the affirmative as you approach the gate, but admits that it has been quite some time since he was last here and, as such, the situation may have changed.

Two town guards carrying pikes standing on either side of the town gate have been watching you make your approach, and now the one on the left addresses the party.

"Welcome to Vallaki," he says in a tone that is neither overly friendly nor overly hostile. "What business brings you here?  Have you come for the festival?"

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
In reply to DM (msg # 7):

Oz blinks, looking over at Ireena and Ismark suspiciously for a moment before returning his attention to the guards.

Did these people never leave their town before in their lives? I could list off all the local festivals near home...

"Just travelers seeking shelter and lodging as we pass through. Pardon the question, but what festival are you referring to?"

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
The guard on the right gives a snort of derision.

"'What festival are you referring to?' is correct," he says sarcastically.  "We ask ourselves that all the time. The Wolf's Head Jamboree was just last week. No! Not even a week; five days ago! And before THAT was the Pumpmition Carnival.  And before THAT--"

The guard on the left gives guard on the right a heavy smack on the shin with his pike, cutting off his diatribe.  Guard On Left looks simultaneously annoyed, and also a little scared.

"Yes, what my colleague means to say is: this week, our esteemed burgomaster,
Vargas Vallakovich, will be leading the town in revelries to celebrate the Festival of the Blazing Sun in three days' time.  It will be an occasion of special magnificence and joy."

Astrid's face brightens at all this talk of festivals.

I do miss the festivals back home - always a chance to perform.  Shame we missed out on the pumpmitions, though.

Blazing Sun, you say?  What kind of festivities do you offer?  Do you have any need of a musician?

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Guard On Right opens his mouth to utter another presumably snide remark, but shuts it when Guard On Left shoots him a stern look.  Guard on Right listens in sulky silence as Guard On Left gives Astrid a welcoming smile.

"A musician, you say?  How very fortunate that your arrival coincides with the Festival of the Blazing Sun!  Vargas Vallakovich will be delighted to have a traveling bard to perform at the occasion.  I do hope you will stay for it!  It will be the grandest fete this town has ever thrown!"

The party hears Guard On Right mumble under his breath "That's what you said about the last five celebrations."

"Mind you, our burgomaster does loves the element of surprise, so many of the details are being kept under wraps. But I have it on good authority that there will be a parade and a bonfire!"

Joaquín, always in the mood for festivals smiles excitedly about the idea of a town-wide party.

I love a good party.  How can I contribute?  I can mend broken things, or help with setting things up, anything you need! All the children enjoyed the party, except Ned. He was not invited. heheh

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
"Better and better!" cries Guard On Left, seemingly pleased that everyone is so excited about the impending festivities.  "A bard AND a jack of all trades!
Not to mention whatever talents your other friends may possess.  Fortune has clearly steered you here.  Welcome, welcome!"

Guard On Right contents himself with rolling his eyes dramatically, but helps his colleague to open the iron gates of the town of Vallaki.

As the party enters the town from the eastern gate, it is immediately apparent that Vallaki is rather more "cosmopolitan" than Barovia.  There are considerably more homes and establishments, and while there the occasional dead-eyed, vacant soul can be seen wandering about, people for the most part seem a bit livelier than the did in Ismark and Ireena's hometown.

Weatherworn garlands--possibly from previous celebrations--hand from the eaves of many of the buildings that you can see.

This is much larger than I was expecting.  I also wasn't expecting any kind of festivities.

What does everyone think?  While I am sure it would be enjoyable and that Astrid would enjoy playing, I imagine we should just push on through to the Abbey.  Let's just fill out canteens and stomachs while we are here and then press onward.

In reply to Tobias Greysen (msg # 14):

"We make our own luck," Oz replies, shrugging at the suggestion of fate bringing the group here in time for the festival. "Besides, from the sound of things, there would have been a festival natter when we arrived."

He glances past the guard and at the streets and homes beyond.

"You're not being truthful with us," he says at last, motioning toward G.O.L. with his staff. "What's really on your mind? Perhaps we can help..."

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Realizing that Oz is right, something is bothering the other guard, Joaquín decides to start paying for attention to his surroundings and a little less attention to his thoughts of food and wine.  He decides to ask the other guard, with whom he feels to have some kind of rapport about all these festivals.

Directing himself to the chatty G.o.R, Joaquín asks, letting his excitement at the prospect of all those festivals shine through:
It must be wonderful to have so many festivals! Have there always been this many festivals?

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Guard On Right scoffs.

"Until recently, no.  Vargas decided about a year ago, after the rout of those resistance fighters who led an assault on Ravenloft, that something needed to be done to bolster the town's spirits. Spread some hope and happiness. For some reason, he decided that the best way to do this is by staging one festival after another-sometimes legitimate harvest or religious festivals, sometimes ones he's completely made up."

Guard On Left frowns at this."I don't see why you disparage the burgomaster so.
He has the best intentions. And the festivities *are* a distraction, you must admit."

"A distraction?  They're pathetic!" Guard On Right retaliates. "Pointless, meaningless affairs. They're more likely to bring Strahd's wrath down upon us than to do any real good."

Guard On Right extends his hand to Joaquin."The name's Udo. Udo Lukovich.  I make shoes when I'm not on duty."

Udo, lovely to meet you!  I'm Joaquín, Arcipreste del Gran Dios Boo.  You are a cobbler, eh? I have some experience mending shoes.  Do you have any lying around that will take more work to fix than they are worth? I think I can help you salvage them with the help of the Great God Boo.

Looking at his companions with a bit of concern that they may want to travel immediately, Joaquín continues,
Assuming my companions and I stay in town long enough, that is.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
"Um. . . .lovely to meet you, I'm sure," says Udo, clearly a bit taken aback by Joaquin's rabidly good nature. "I have no idea which god that is, but if he can patch cracked leather, then he sounds like an upstanding fellow to me!"

"Mind you, you won't be missing much if you decide to press on. But if you need a place to stay for the night, there's always the Blue Water Inn. Urwin and Danika are good sorts, and they'll put you up right.

"That said, you seem an interesting lot; no doubt Vargas himself would be pleased to extend an invitation to stay at his manse."

Udo pulls a face.

"Assuming that's your sort of thing."

Udo,  you probably know the area fairly well.  Mind if I ask how long a trip it is from here to the abbey?  Also, does 'the wizard of wine' means anything to you?

"The winery?  Sure it does!  Urwin's old man owns the place. Makes a pretty decent vintage--when he's not too sloshed from sampling his own wares!" Udo says, glossing over Tobias' first question.

"Mind you, Urwin and his old man don't always see eye to eye on things, on account of Davian's er, *fondness* for the grape. Calls him "the old crow," he does. Maybe best not to bring it up if you find yourself at the Blue Water."

Interesting.  Is he actually a wizard or is that more of a title?

Tobias wanted to drill the guard for more information from the clues in the reading but his instincts told him it probably wouldn't be wise to be the newcomer asking weird questions.  Probably best to space them out across town.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
In reply to Tobias Greysen (msg # 22):

Oz looks increasingly agitated until the Wizard of Wine is mentioned, at which point he becomes somewhat more interested.

"Well, there's a lead worth checking, at least," he says to the others. "I'm fine with spending the night within friendly walls, but I'm not convinced we should stay here through the festival. The sands won't stop pouring down from the fair Ireena's hourglass just because we want to watch dancing and parades while eating spits of roasted meat."
