Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Bray's little eyes widen in amazement as the broken toy wagon wheel begins to knit itself together.

"Wowwwwwww," the small boy breathes.  "That was amazing!!  How did you do that?!  Oh!  I mean. . . .thank you very much, sir," Bray adds hastily, after a pointed look from his mother.  Danika nods in satisfaction.

"I can tell you who made it!  Mr. Blinksy did, sir! He lives in here in Vallaki, and he makes all kinds of neat toys and things! He is a little "soft in the head," Papa says, but I like him! I have other toys if you want to see them!"

"BRAY!" Danika cries. "We do NOT talk about Mr. Blinksy like that. And your papa knows that full well."

"Ye gods, what am I in trouble for this time?" a good-natured voice booms. The source of the voice comes out of the kitchen, bearing a tray of victuals for the two drunk-ish men sitting at the other table.  Urwin, presumably, is a barrel-chested man with a full jet-black beard and laughing eyes.

"Many things dear, but just now: speaking well of our neighbors in front of little ears."

"Well, if you're as handy with the crockery as you were with that wagon, I'd say you've earned you and your friends a lunch.  Urwin has no end of dishes in the kitchen that could use fixing. Most of them no thanks to those two," Danika adds, scowling at the drunk-ish men.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
My, that is quite a distance.  I suppose I'll need to make it out there at some point.  I have heard tale of many places in these parts that I plan to see while I travel here.

Tobias leans in a bit.

This wine is amazing.  Well worth the trip it will be.  As far as the shipment, if I see something, you have my word I will look into it.

As I mentioned that we are not from these parts, we are missing something fairly key...a good map of the area.  Is there anyone who might be selling something like that here in town?

I'll hear people talk about places to visit around here and have no way to take good note of it and before you know it I seem to just forget where they said it was.  For example, I was speaking with someone just the other day and they told me about this old mill that is supposed to haunted or cursed or something in this area.  Thought it might have been fun to see - from a safe distance of course - but I totally forgot where they said it was.  If I had a map,
I would have just gotten them to mark it.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
In reply to Tobias Greysen (msg # 51):

Oz blinks at the hunters, surprised.

"What, you MIGHT have information about a werewolf coven but don't want to share it with fellow slayers? Whose side are you on?"

His tone is conversational, but it's not entirely said in jest.

"I'm Oz. He's Alaric. We're in the business of...erasing...trouble of all shapes and sizes. I hear we might have that in common."

He raises a hand and orders "whatever they're having" for himself and Alaric, plus another round for the pair of hunters.

"Don't worry. We're not horning in on your territory; we'll be gone at first light. Or perhaps after the festivial...we're still debating it. Would it be worth staying for it?"

He awaits a nod or a shrug or a shake of the head, then presses onward.

"You no doubt noticed the fine upbringing of two of our number," he continues, jerking a thumb those Ismark and Ireena. "We're currently in their employ, trying to help them shake a particularly nasty curse. Tell me, in your travels, have you had much experience with that? Information leading toward a cure would be well compensated."

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Joaquín follows Urwin into the kitchen and sets to work.

As he works on things, he asks about Mr. Blinksy:

So, Bray tells me Mr. Blinksy made his wagon, but that the pointy eared man couldn't fix it.  What can you tell me about Mr. Blinksy? I'd very much like to meet him and examine his wares.  And who is the pointy eared man that Bray talked about?  Does he fix things also, or does he make things too? I'm always looking for makers to trade knowledge with.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
At the table:

"Fine upbringing? Hells, their digs look even sorrier than ours.  Though I wouldn't say "no" to the pretty blonde if she asked, eh?" says Longbow Hunter, grinning.  When he receives no reply to this witticism, he relapses back into scowling, but looks a bit mollified when Oz mentions that the party won't be edging in on their territory.

"Good. Wouldn't want other profit seekers competin'," the man continues. "Specially if what you say is true and you brought down a pack. Bad for business, like. Yevgeni and me, we like to keep the pest control business a monotreme."

"Monopoly," grunts Yevgeni.

"That. So I'd tell you lot to mosey right along. This festival ain't gonna be nothing but a sad sack, just like the other ones."

"Szoldar, sssh!" Yevgeni hisses, his beady eyes darting right to left worriedly.

"Now, it's right strange that you claim to have seen a werewolf on the road.
Right strange indeed. Usually those ones are clever 'nuff not to attack a large group,"
Szoldar goes on. "Unless there were a bunch of 'em. Between you and me, I've heard tell there's a whole *cave* of 'em up near Lake Baratok. Never tried flushing it out just Yevgeni and me, but we know the area. Could guide you there, if you were interested."

Szoldar smiles an ugly smile.

"For the right price, of course."

In the kitchen:

The kitchen is full of piles of pots, walls lined with utensils and shelves of ingredients, and all manner of pleasant odors. Two lanterns hang above a sturdy pine worktable amid all the clutter. A pot of tasty-smelling soup bubbles on the hearth, and Urwin is juggling his attention between stirring and seasoning the soup and keeping an eye on some steaks sizzling over a fire.

"Gadof Blinksy is the toymaker. Complete genius, truly, but. . . " Urwin smiles sadly and makes a finger twirling gesture around his ear.

"No idea how he's still in business, really. You and your friends are travelers;
you've been around this realm.  Can't imagine there's much of a demand for toys, can you?
If it weren't for the burgomaster giving him a pittance for festival decorations,
he'd have closed up shop long ago, I'd say."

"The pointy-eared fellow is a guest currently staying here. Came riding into town several weeks ago on a carnival wagon of all things! Strange fellow, but nice enough.
Always leaves the inn at dawn and dusk to do. . .well, whatever he does! He's paying a good price to rent our private room, so I don't ask questions."

At the bar:

"A map, you say?" Danika says thoughtfully. "Well. . .I guess you could ask Father Lucian at the church.  He's clever, and I think he used to travel in his youth."

"There's also a Vistani camp just to the south of town, but. . .well, I wouldn't ask them.
Your friend there seems nice enough,"
she says, nodding toward Nico, "but those camp folk are a nasty sort.  You'll just as soon want to leave them be, mark my word."

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
In reply to DM (msg # 54):

"I could say the same thing," Oz replies, glancing at Alaric and raising an eyebrow. "What's the going rate for clearing out a cave of werewolves these days?"

He smiles slightly.

"We'll defend ourselves on the road, but...we don't work for free.  I'm sure you gentlemen understand."

Oz grins slyly as a thought comes to him.

"Besides. The pretty blonde over there would be very grateful for your help. It could be, ah, mutually beneficial...if that makes any difference to you."

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
In reply to DM (msg # 54):

While working his way through the broken dishes, a leaking cauldron, a cracked pan, and a hairline crack in the tripod over the fire, Joaquín asks a few more questions about the toy maker, thinking about seeing if this craftsman might improve his holy symbol:

I should very much like to meet them both, they seem quite interesting.  Where would I find Gadof?  I would like to examine his wares, and perhaps see if he would be willing to make something for me. In case he isn't willing or able, are there any other shops or makers in town that I might visit?

Once he has finished with his mending in the kitchen, Joaquín asks if there are other things that might be mended:
Do you recall anything being tossed in the garbage heap, or left by a guest that might be worth mending? And do you mind if I ask the guests if they have anything that needs repair? The Great God Boo requires that I try to bring order to the world by repairing broken things, so I'm always on the lookout for that sort of thing.Bloody nutter, just like Gadof, if you ask me

Father Lucian?  I will definitely have to go and see him.  Thank you.

He nods and orders a second glass of the wine.

We are on our way to the abbey at the moment.  Probably in town only for the night.  Anything you recommend we see or do while we are here?

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
At the bar:

"Well, we have a lovely coffin maker's shop," Danika says after a long moment's thought, "but I don't suppose that's really what you had in mind, is it?" she adds with a chuckle.

"I'd bet this inn that you'll be asked for a meal, or at the very least for tea at the burgomaster's house. Vargas loves to show off exotic and interesting guests, and you're clearly seasoned travelers.  I don't suppose a small town has much of interest to offer!"

"There's Argynvostholt. . . . "
Brom says shyly, the first time the older boy has deigned to say anything.

In the kitchen:

"Willing?  He'd be ecstatic," Urwin laughs as he ladles steaming borscht into an assortment of newly-mended mugs and bowls. The borscht goes on a sizable tray along with dill potatoes and sour cream, as well as the steaks which, while red meat, don't exactly look to have come from a cow. "As I said, the man doesn't get a great deal of commerce.  I'm sure he would welcome a commission."

"Well, there's Henrik.  Henrik van der Voort.  Carpenter and coffin maker. I can't speak with certainty but. . .I suppose he'd have things that need mending? Anyway, help me carry these out to the taproom, will you?  Lunch is served!"

At the table:

Szoldar laughs, showing yellowed teeth.

"Yer not serious!" he guffaws.  Upon seeing the really quite serious indeed expressions on Oz and Alaric's faces, he reconsiders.  "Shit.  You ARE serious."

Yevgeni says nothing, but his jaw tightens somewhat.

"See now, I'm sure you lot are a big, fancy group of heroes, but a whole den of werewolves is a bit rich even for you. How many did you say you killed on the road?  Just one?  Bet it did you a bunch of hurt before you put it down," Szoldar says knowingly.

"Yevgeni and me, we're happy to guide you on your way to the werewolves, but it ain't gonna come cheap.
No siree, not cheap at all. And we ain't gonna fight a werewolf pack, not even for a gold mine."

Szoldar sends a sidelong glance at Ireena's backside as she leans across the bar to say something to Danika.

"Or a pretty piece of ass."

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Alaric presses his lips together, clearly uncomfortable with the Oswald's offering Ireena's affections in exchange for knowledge, feigned or otherwise. His mood sours even more at the hunters' crass allusions to the young woman.

Come on, Oz. It's clear these...gentlemen...have never been anywhere near this den. We're wasting our time. These look like the type whose method of slaying wolves is to grab them by the puppy.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Joaquín helps carry out the food and calls cheerily over to Alaric and Oz, Lunch gentlemen!

After sitting down, to eat, Joaquín pulls out his copy of Hymns to the Dawn to start reading again. After a moment's contemplation, he realizes that Udo or the other guard mentioned that the upcoming festival was the Festival of the Blazing Sun.  He says to Astrid, Perhaps you should be reading this.  So far, I see nothing of particular use religiously, but singing some of these songs might butter up the Hamburgler. The Meisterburger that is, since his Festival of the Blazing Sun is in a few days.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
"You couldn't afford us anyway," Szoldar scoffs.  "C'mon Yevgeni.  Let's leave these tossers to their meal."

Szoldar drops some coinage on the table, and stomps out of the inn, his silent shadow right behind him. As he passes Ireena, the grizzled hunter trails a hand along her back, almost gently.  Ireena, having heard none of the lurid conversation at their table, looks after him in confusion, unsure whether the invasion of her personal space was intentional or merely an accident.

The borscht, steaks, and potatoes are supplemented by rye bread.  All in all, a hearty meal.

Joaquin's book turns out to be as enthralling as one might have expected. Lots of prayers and songs, all along the same lines: praising the Morning Lord for banishing the night, with its darkness and terrors, etc etc.

Brom, flushed at being asked a direct question by one of the adventurers, pulls up a stool next to Tobias.

"Argynvostholt is a place, sir.  It's not in the town though. It's somewhere to the south. But I learned about it in school with Father Lucian! It's a big fortress, where knights used to live! And there was even a dragon there!"

Alaric relaxes considerably as the two hunters leave the bar. He takes a seat at the table, nodding appreciatively at the spread. He takes a bite of the steak curiously, attempting to ascertain the manner of beast it came from.

[Knowledge Nature: 23]

Regardless of the origin of the meat, it was a pleasure to sit at a table and have a proper meal.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
In reply to Alaric von Innsbruck (msg # 65):

Oz grumbles as the ill-mannered hunters take their leave, turning to join his allies at the table for lunch.

He tucks into the meal with gusto, though truth be told he would have eaten anything that wasn't a trail ration with equal fervor.

Between bites, he compares notes with the rest of the group.

"So...there's a werewolf cave not too far from here, if those two hunters are to be believed," he begins. "There's no bounty on them, though. Probably only worth knowing about as a warning that it exists. And if the woman we killed belonged to it...well, they might be out for blood."

He holds his hands over the meat, palms downward, to imbue it with a smoky flavor before cutting into it with his knife.

"I'm still opposed to sticking around for the festival proper, and while I want to meet this town's eccentric leader, I fear doing so will obligate us linger longer than we want."

He glances at the others dining.

"Did anybody learn anything else of interest?"

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Before anyone can tell of the things they have learned, interesting or otherwise, the door to the Blue Water Inn opens and a young man--or rather a boy; he can't be more than fifteen or sixteen--enters the taproom and approaches the party as they sit enjoying their luncheon.

The teenager's clothing is of much higher quality than that belonging to most of the people the party has seen in Vallaki thus far.  He is dressed almost exclusively in dark colors. The young man is tall and lanky, with very pale skin and a shock of black hair that falls carelessly into his eyes. [If he lived in our world, he's almost certainly be considered emo.]

The two drunkards at the other table glare at the newcomer and whisper to one another under their breath, shooting angry glances at the teen.

"You must be the travelers who just arrived in town.  Obviously. My parents sent me to invite you to a "soiree" at their house tonight," the young man says. The air quotes around "soiree" are thick and heavy.

"So. . . .what should I tell them?" he asks, voice dripping with teenage nonchalance, as if he couldn't possibly care one way or the other. That said, the party can't help but notice the boy sneaking interested glances at them, especially at Oz and Viktoriya.

Joaquín, bubbling with excitement at the prospect of, what from its context seems like a fancy, if smelly party, says expansively to the group:

A festival, an impressively skilled toymaker, and a seweree!  This town just keeps getting better and better! Say it with me doofus, "swɑh ray"

Realizing he has no idea who this kid's parents are, where they live or ant of that pertainent information, he asks:

The young man gives Joaquin a withering look to show that he doesn't think very highly of the cleric's intelligence for even having to ask.

"Vargas Vallakovich and Lilia Petrovna. The burgomaster and his wife."

Before the young man entered, Astrid accepted the book from Joaquin.  Couldn't hurt to learn some of these songs.  I find burghers are best when buttered a bit.

Astrid looks up from her meal.  Well, that was a freebie.

After she finishes her bite of steak, she smiles at the young man and says, We'd be delighted to come by.
