Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
The teen warily backs away from Joaquin a step or two.  He gives a curt nod to Astrid's RSVP.

"Whatever," the young man says with extreme indifference.  With no further ado, he turns and walks out of the inn.

Well...All right.  Guess dinner is taken care of as well.

Tobias turns back to Brom.

So tell me more of this sneeze castle of yours.  A dragon you say?  Tobias says with a wink.

Brom nods happily.

"Yes sir!  A silver dragon.  His name was Argynvost, which is of course how the fortress gets it name.  "The home of Argynvost."He gathered together an order of good and noble knights to stand against Strahd."

The lad shrugs sheepishly.

"But that's all I know.  Father Lucian hasn't finished the lesson yet."

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Well this Father Lucian seems like a good guy to talk to.  Maybe after we all finish our meal you can show us over to his place before we head over to that party or whatever - with your mother's permission of course  says Tobias.  He looks to Danika with his last few words.

Turning back to boy, Well, you seem like a pretty sharp kid.  What do you think? Are our party hosts this evening as rude as their son or are they pretty liked around town?

Before that brat came in you were asking if we learned anything interesting, right Oz? Anyway, I found out that there is an incredibly skilled woodworker in town. The boys here have a model Vistani wagon that is a perfect miniature replica that actually works. Since you say we might see more weirdwolves, I think we should visit him because I suspect that he is skilled enough to be able to silver enlay some quarterstaves. Maybe not the best weapons, but better than nothing.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Joaquin, during lulls in the conversation, has gone through the bag of communal funds with Nico and determined that roughly 2/3 of their coinage is in silver.

Danika and Urwin consider for a moment, exchanging a silent parental exchange with their eyes.  Then Danika shrugs and nods at her eldest son, who grins from ear to ear.

"Dont' forget to take your coat and boots!" she adds, and Brom dutifully heads up to his room to fetch the requested items.

"That's Victor for you," Danika says, nodding toward the door through which the contrary teenager left.  "I'm convinced that the boy is brilliant, and it certainly can't have been easy for him growing up in a town with so little in the way of stimulation. It doesn't help that he's at that age now where it's considered "cool" to be contrary to everything that you parents represent."/DarkBlue>

<DarkBlue>"I don't think you need to worry about any rudeness from Vargas and Lilia,"
Urwin says in response to Tobias question. "On the contrary, I expect them to be gracious and welcoming to the utmost.  They want to be liked, and they want their citizens and guests to like them and to be happy. What's that phrase our burgomaster is always throwing around?  "All will be well.""

"Mind you, even something as good-intentioned as wanting to spread happiness can be taken too far," Danika adds.  Before she can say more, however, Brom is back wearing his coat and boots.

"C'mon, let's go!" the boy says, grabbing Tobias' hand and practically dragging him to the door.

While Brom is going upstairs, Joaquín asks I'd he can also show then where Blinksy lives.
Would it be alright if Brom also showed us where the toymaker's shop us located?  Or at least points us in the right direction?

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
"As long as he's home by sundown in time for supper," Danika says in response to Joaquin while the party is on the way out the door. "And you behave yourself now, young man!  I'll know if you don't!"

Brom gives a wave to his mother and father, and another little one to the conspiracy of ravens perched on and about the inn roof.

Ireena and Ismark, still all too aware of their diminished status in the world, decide to stay back at the inn and assist Urwin and Danika with various chores, so that their free lunch seems a bit less like charity. They do promise to meet up with you for the evening's "soiree."

[A group of ravens is apparently called a conspiracy.  How neat is that!?]

Alright, alright. Chuckled Tobias as he was nearly dragged behind the excited youth.  Which way to Father Lucian's?  Or is the toymaker closer?

Tobias stops dead in his tracks Wait a moment.  If you are going to travel with adventurers you need to look the part as well.  Placing his own wide brimmed hat on the kid, he says Much better.  Now we can go.

In reply to Tobias Greysen (msg # 82):

Oz grumbles a bit, perhaps remembering what happened the last time the party went to a strange church, but follows along with the others.

There are many stories being told, he ruminates. But we have gotten no closer to a cure.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Brom leads you to St. Andral's Church, where Father Lucian preaches to and counsels his flock.  (N1 on map of Vallaki.)

As the party reaches the church, already they have a better feeling about this one given that there is no inhuman screaming coming from inside.  The layout inside is much the same, with a small chapel for worship, and a few rooms off of the main entryway.  None of the pews in the chapel is upturned and no detritus is strewn about.  Better and better.

The chapel is empty with the exception of a short man--presumably Father Lucian--sitting in the front pew with his arm placed consolingly on the shoulder of an middle-aged woman, sobbing as if her heart will break.

Father Lucian looks up as Brom and the party enter his church.  His kind brown eyes widen slightly in surprise as he takes in the motley assortment of adventurers accompanying the lad.

"Hello, Brom," Lucian says softly. "How nice to see you.  And your. . . .friends?"

He nods his head slightly at the crying woman.

"Perhaps not the best time, though."

In reply to DM (msg # 84):

"Oh, ok. Sorry to bother you." Oz and the rest walk away.

"Are you certain? We're professional problem-solvers and...if you don't mind me saying so, you seem to be in the market for precisely that."

He glances at the sobbing woman, unsure of what to do about that.

"You'd, er, you'd...that is...what seems to be the matter?"

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Father Lucian looks about to protest, but the crying woman looks up at Oz, latching on to his promise to provide aid.

"They've arrested my son Udo!" she cries. "Not an hour ago! Izek and his goons came and apprehended him while he was on guard duty!  He wasn't doing anything wrong!"

She sniffs and blows her nose on Lucian's handkerchief.

"Can you help him?"

Udo!  That's guard from the gate that let us in earlier!

Shaking his head in consternation:

What has this Izek accused Udo of doing?

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
"He was making cracks about the burgomaster's latest festival," the woman says in between sniffles, as Father Lucian pats her hand reassuringly. "I *told* him not to.  He knew it was dangerous.  . ."

Lucian nods.

"Our burgomaster has a rather thin skin.  He doesn't take kindly to people criticizing his policies.  Thinks it detracts from the "happiness and good will," the priest adds.

His brow furrows.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
In reply to DM (msg # 90):

"Hmm? Oh, I'm Oz," he says absently, the letters O and Z burning themselves into the air above him as though being drawn by invisible sparklers. "My friends and I are trying to help the late burgomaster of your neighboring village's daughter, Ireena, with a particular...problem. We've stopped in your fair town en route to the Abbey."

He frowns as he considers the information before him.

"We have been invited to dine with the burgomaster this evening. It would be simple enough to inquire as to your son's whereabouts, and perhaps plead for his release. Would you like that?"

Alaric raises an eyebrow. You can be jailed for criticizing a festival? he asks incredulously?

Thin skin indeed.

Thin skin and tiny hands, I'd bet...  This burger king is sounding less and less appealing.

Astrid listens for the woman's story, eager to hear the details and figure out a way to help.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
"Um. . . well.  . . .that's about all there is to tell, really," the woman says, her sobs having dwindled to sniffles thanks to the many, many sets of sympathetic ears.

"My name is Willemina," she says. "And while I don't know if Vargas will listen to you, I should be very grateful if you would plead on my son's behalf."

While Willemina seizes upon Oz's offer, Lucian answers their other questions.

"Very nice," he says, watching Oz's sparkly letters fade into nothing. "Doesn't really answer my question, but you seem like decent folk I suppose."

"Indeed, you can be jailed for speaking ill of a festival,"
Lucian says to Alaric, not exactly meeting the witcher's uncomfortable gaze. "These so-called festivals tend to be dismal affairs, and as for saving us from Strahd by bringing great happiness? Just about everyone you meet will agree that that's a load of rubbish. But very few people--with the exception of Lady Wachter maybe--are willing to voice their displeasure precisely because of what has happened to poor Udo."

Vargas sends his henchman, Izek, to apprehend those who fall on his bad side. Izek's a nasty sort. . .a violent man with an arm that can conjure fire."

Joaquín frowns deeply as the explanation is given, growing more and more convinced the Burgomeister is not only a bad parent, but also a bad Burgomeister Hasn't he noticed that all these festivals are just making people feel worse?  And arresting people for their feelings?  How is it that you all haven't revolted and replaced him?  It seems the Lady Weightwatcher expresses her feelings why can she and you all can't?
