Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
"I thought we were going to go see Mr. Blinksy next," Brom begins to protest, then flushes at having spoken out of turn.

"It's just, his store is lots more interesting than Henrik's. It's just creepy."

Brom suppresses a shudder.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
In reply to DM (msg # 149):

"Work before pleasure," Oz says firmly. "We can do both. And by the time we get to the fun part, you'll appreciate it all the more."

He turns to the thief.

"Tobias is right...you're coming with us. Today's 'chores' involve apologizing and recovering stolen goods, followed by gathering the materials needed from the carpenter to repair what you broke. Do a good job and you'll get your normal wages for it, so your actions won't cost your family its dinner."

Oz glances over to their cleric suddenly.

"It would be good for him to actually fix what he broke with his bare hands, if you don't mind."

He taps his staff to the ground and makes an impatient gesture.

"Well? Let's get going, or we'll be late to our next engagement."

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Having seen how people typically react to being called out as a thief, Joaquín looks at Brom and says to Oz:
Speaking to the carpenter might be a far uglier visit than this one.  Perhaps we should drop Brom at the Inn first, and then come back for him after we have dealt with the carpenter.

In reply to Joaquin (msg # 151):

Oz shrugs.

"Whatever works. I truly doubt the carpenter will pose a problem for a group like ours, but if you're expecting a scene then it's wise to take precautions."

Less a question of him posing a problem and more a question of annoying the Innkeeper that already likes us well enough.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Brom looks indignantly at the party as they debate the wisdom of bringing him on their journey about town.

"I'm eleven, almost grown up! Also you gave me an adventurer hat.  That means I'm one of the group now.  I want to come with you."

The lad folds his arms as if to say "so there."

If your mind is made up, I don't suppose we should stop you. But, because you are the new member of the group, you have to promise to do what we tell you, even if it is to run away.  Will you make that promise? All the other children ran, except for Dan, now his ashes fit in a can.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Getting down to a knee so that he can look the boy in the eyes, Brom.  You can come.  You can watch.  You will stay a good distance away before even get near where he is. This is only scenario where you get to come, okay? Part of being in a group like this is playing your role.  You job is to run and go get help should things take a bad turn.  We need you.

Brom nods.

"I'm not afraid. Mom and dad's friends will protect me if we get into trouble.  Where are we going to go first?"

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Brom pulls a face but does not complain as the party leaves St. Andral's church, frog-marching Milivoj between Tobias and Oz.  Alaric remains lurking close by within Milivoj's line of sight, just in case the young man gets any funny ideas.

Henrik van der Voort's shop is on the other side of town from St. Andral's, so the party enjoys a nice, leisurely walk down the main street, attracting a number of curious stares as they do so.  Preparations for the upcoming festival appear to be in full swing--a number of town denizens are involved in removing withered swags of greenery from the eaves and signs of homes and businesses, and hanging new ones in their stead.

Eventually, the party reaches their destination (N6 on map of Vallaki).  Henrik's uninviting shop is two stories and has a sign shaped like a coffin above the front door.  All of the window shutters are closed up tight, and a deathly silence surrounds the establishment.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
In reply to DM (msg # 159):

Oz walks up to the front door and (if it is closed) bangs on it with the bottom of his fist, rapping three times in rapid succession such that the muffled WHUMPHS can be clearly heard.

"Henrik? You there?"

OOC to avoid stopgap updates:

Brennan wait at the door for maybe 30 seconds, but if there's neither an answer nor the sound of movement, he'll attempt to open the door himself. If that occurs and it's locked, he'll ask a larger member of the party to bust it down.

Tobias positions Brom a good distance away from the house and then heads off to join Oz at the door.

He waits a moment after Oz knocks and then moves to go peek through any Windows that are open.

Joaquín sees what Tobias is up to and gives him a boost so that he can peek into the upstairs windows.
If you are going to look you may as well see it all, eh?

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
The windows of Henrik's shop are latticeworks of iron fitted with squares of frosted glass and locked tightly from the inside.  The door is similarly locked.

Silence resonates for several long moments.  Then from inside the store comes a voice shouting:

"Go away!  We're closed!"

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
In reply to Joaquin (msg # 164):

Oz nods at the thief encouragingly.

"Get him to open the door. Convince him it's a good idea. Tell him you have to confess something about the bones. Insinuate that you gave him false bones but now you feel bad about that and have brought the real ones. Or make up something else.

Oz narrows his eyes.

"Make it good, because if he won't open the door, we'll have to involve the law..."

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Milivoj looks as though he'd rather be anywhere else, *with* anyone else, but he obliges Oz.

"Er. . . . . .Mr. Henrik?  Sir?  It's Milivoj.  Uh. . . . . .listen, I have something to tell you about the saint's bones.  They're not real.  Yeah, I gave you.
. . . pig bones instead.  Yeah.  Listen, do you think you could come out and I can explain myself?"

Milivoj's acting leaves a great deal to be desired, though that likely has something to do with the fact that he's surrounded by heavily armed adventurers who are displeased with him.

Brom stands idly across the street, drawing patterns in the dirt with a stick and curiously watching the proceedings. Whether because of Milivoj's poor acting or because of Henrik's desire to remain hidden, the door remains firmly barred.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
In reply to DM (msg # 167):

"...ok. If the door is literally barred with wood, those lock picks won't help us."

Oz gives the door a tug and a shove to get a sense for what sort of barrier they are dealing with, then raps on it heavily with his staff.

"Henrik, you're only making this worse on yourself. You're in possession of stolen property. It's putting everyone who lives here at risk. Is it really worth losing whatever the materials and labor associated with repairing your door will be over this? OPEN. UP."

He sighs, rapping on it again.

"If you do not open this door immediately, we will recommend to your burgomaster that you be imprisoned for stealing relics from the clergy."

Alaric observes the proceedings dispassionately with his arms crossed, idly wondering whether or not the saint's bones actually were enchanted to impart some form of protection.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Uh, Oz, I'm not ready to create water, so if you burn the door, and it gets out of hand, the whole place could go up.  Not much point in bringing back bone ash to the good Father Lucian, now is there?  And on top of that, we already have a someone we're trying to get out of gaol, I'm not sure I want to join him there before doing a gaol break, those are much harder from the inside.  Why don't Nico and I have a quick look around the building again to see if there are any other ways in.?

Joaquín and Nico start around the whole building, checking to see if there are other ways in besides the main door and the windows.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
In reply to Joaquin (msg # 172):

Oz fidgets, summoning and unsummoning flames at his fingertip like a zippo lighter. Patience is, as has been aptly demonstrated, not his strong point, but he allows the perimeter check to proceed uninterrupted.
