Hold on, hold on.  Tobias says quietly as he sets to working with the lockpicks

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
The none-too-sophisticated lock obediently gives way under Tobias' ministrations, thus preventing the incineration of Henrik's shop and possibly a chunk of Vallaki along with it.

The door opens up with a soft *snick* and the whoever enters finds themselves standing in a small workshop.  Three study worktables stretch the length of the west wall, covered with various tools, chunks of wood, and wood shavings.

A man, presumably Henrik, sits on a wooden stool at the far end of the room, watching the party dispassionately. He is an older man, with grey hair and beard.

"You just had to keep at it, didn't you?" Henrik says in a voice made raspy from years of inhaling wood dust.  "Never thought that it may have been for your own good that I wanted you kept out, did you?"

Brom, not wanting to be left out of the action, darts back from across the street and stands in the doorframe, watching curiously.

[Amazingly, there is a map for even this.  You are now in part C.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
In reply to DM (msg # 175):

"I like to make those kinds of decisions for myself," Oz replies easily, glancing around the room for any potential danger. "Besides, you weren't giving us much to go on...and the bones weren't about to return themselves to the churchyard for Father Lucian."

He frowns.

"One hopes."

Yes, well we weren't getting answers on that side of the door so I figured we would try this one says Tobias as he casually crosses the threshold.  He nonchalantly drags a finger across a sawdust covered surface.

You have much to explain.  Why would you need something like the Churches bones?

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Joaquín can't really believe Tobias is that ignorant of the power in bones, especially after they had been travelling together for a while now, but he decides to remind him nonetheless.
Bones hold power, Tobias. Incredible power in some cases.  You've seen what I can do with the bones of my enemies, the power of a saint's bones must be great indeed.

Turning back to Henrik, Joaquín asks pointedly:
So what does a humble carpenter need with that much power, Henrik?

"Very well.  You've found me out. Not that it was terribly difficult to do, I suppose," Henrik says, ignoring the party's queries as to why he desired the bones in the first place. "Didn't keep quiet, did you boy? Can't blame you, I suppose, what with an army of armed adventuring sorts breathing down your neck.  And I don't suppose it matters now."

"You want the bones?  Very well.  I'll cooperate.  You'll find them--and the reliquary--upstairs in my bedroom wardrobe. Take them.  I just ask that once you do, you leave my home immediately. "

Joaquín raises his eyebrow at Henrik's non-answer answer and straps on his shield and takes up his warhammer.

Just what have you done Henrik? I get the feeling that there is a lot you aren't telling us.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Henrik rises from his stool and heads over to the window, peering outside briefly.

"As you've so terribly kindly pointed out, *I* have no real use for these bones. I am merely a "humble carpenter" after all."

"One night, several months ago, I received a visitor to my shop: a well-dressed fellow, possibly even a nobleman. Name of Vasili von Holtz.  He promised me good business in return for my help. I will admit that I had my doubts, but you see my shop-it was a tempting offer. Most of my "help" involved providing a roof for his friends to stay under when they passed through town. Some of them wanted me to procure the bones for them, specifically in time for the feast of St. Andral's Day.
. . . .or the Celebration of the Rising Sun of whatever our esteemed burgomaster is calling it these days."

None of Henrik's explanation is especially detailed or helpful, but it is clear from his expression that he is a deeply troubled man.

"Oh gods. . .please can you make them go away?"

Henrik sighs in relief.

"Very well.  The bones, as I said, are in the wardrobe. If you intend to fetch them, please do so quietly."

"And don't go in the big storage room.  It would be. . . ill-advised."

Well...now we kinda have to go in there.  Tobias says exasperated. When the person you just caught doing something illegal says don't look in that box, there is obviously something else they do not want to get caught with in that box.

Tobias looks to the rest of his group.  One of us should go and run and fetch a guard.  Someone who can actually punish him for this theft.  I am sure Brom could show one of us where the closest guard would be.

"I should think that travelers seemingly as well-seasoned as yourselves should damn well know why!"

"There's still daylight left.  Quite likely they will be in their crates now.  Poke around if you must, but you should be fine so long as you don't open them."

Joaquín raises an eyebrow and asks the group:

So then, it's weirdwolves or vampyres, I suppose. And do we do away with them now ourselves, or bring in the town guard?

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
In reply to Joaquin (msg # 188):

Oz turns to Joaquin.

"We should notify the town guard, certainly. In fact, that would be an excellent task for young Brom here. He knows the town and is likely quite swift."

Oz smiles encouragingly at the lad, hoping he won't catch onto the OTHER reasons it would be best to spare Brom the scene to come.

He then turns his attention to the infuriatingly vague Henrik.

"Let's pretend for a moment that my knowledge is limited to burning things -- uncooperative things, mostly," Oz says, taking a step closer to the carpenter. His patience is clearly exhausted, as evidenced by the smoldering at his fingertips. "And that I do not, in fact, 'know damn well why' anything that happens in your horribly cursed reality occurs".

He points toward the indicated area.

"What will we find when we go in there? Specifically. I don't like surprises, especially when we're trying to help you out with your problem. Is it a mummy? Skeletons? Vampires? Help us help you!"

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
"Vampyres," says the infuriatingly vague Henrik, being forthright for a change. "Asleep in the crates at this hour, I should imagine."

"Don't ask me why they wanted the saint's bones though.  I wasn't privy to that information. I just know that they wanted them in hand by the day of the Festival of the Rising Sun."

Brom for his part ducks quickly outside, running down the street at a gallop--less out of fear of what's inside the house and more out of a desire to return as hastily as possible to see some shit go down.

They requested the bones? So these vampires are your...guests? Tobias attempts to hide his genuine confusion and curiosity but fails.

How many guests might you have?

In reply to Tobias Greysen (msg # 191):

"Vampires in crates. Wonderful," Oz mutters. "Ok, we need someone to fetch the bones. In the meantime..."

He looks over at Alaric.

"We have a few helpless vampires available to us. They won't stay that way. Do you know how to coupe-de-grace such a creature while it is vulnerable? Stake it through the coffin or expose them to the sun or something?"

His hands continue to smolder at his sides as he talks.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
"Guests" is being a bit generous, Henrik says glumly.  "Once I'd extended the offer of hospitality, they pretty much came and went as they pleased. Turns out there's some truth to the old legends after all."

"But to answer your question, there are six of them."

Henrik eyes Oz's smoldering hands warily.

"Listen, I know I'm in the wrong but I'd prefer not to take that approach.  I do live here."

Henrik looks over the party with doubt.

<DarkBlue>"Are you saying you don't actually know how to get rid of vampyres?  Seems to me that this would be kind of in your line of work is all."

Joaquin is a bit confused by Alaric's question:

Alaric, there are six vampyres, and you want to know about an alley?  Shouldn't we be dragging the boxes out into the sunlight and let the sun do our job for us and not hiding them in an alley?

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
At about this point, the door to Henrik's shop slams open with such force that it bounces off the wall somewhat.  Standing in the entrance is a man clad in fine clothing.  In his youth he may once have been good-looking, but he has now run to fat.  His skin has an unhealthy orange pallor, and his mop of greying hair perches awkwardly on top of his head.

The man is flanked by two guard types, one on either side. One of the guards is a nondescript fellow; the other is a stooped man with cold, calculating eyes whose face and neck are covered with ropes of twisted scar tissue.  While the scars are terrible to behold, the most notable characteristic of this man is his right arm--a metal prosthetic with barbed spines, elongated fingers, and long nails.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Baron Vargas Vallakovich storms,
gesticulating with small hands. "I was in the middle of a game of croquet when this boy came running up with some outlandish tale of monsters in the carpenter shop. I demand an explanation!

Oz blinks at the man, sizing him up.

Insight: 11

"It has already been explained to you, my lord," Oz replies, his tone more dry than deferential. "There are monsters in the carpenter shop."

He motions toward the rest of his party.

"My friends and I were just about to dispatch them. Would you care to join us?"

Oz cocks his head to the side, trying to get a read on the man.

"Would you care to lead us?"

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"

The Baron's demeanor shifts noticeably when Oz addresses him, from belligerent and whiny to wheedling and rambling.

"Why you must be the adventurers that just came into town this morning!  Believe me, everyone is talking about you. Terrific that you're here, just terrific, what with the festival coming up.  You're staying for the festival right?  It's going to be great, believe me. Speaking of staying, where are you staying?  The Blue Water?  No, that'll never do. A group like you needs finer accomodations.  You must stay at my manse.  It's amazing. Believe me."

Brom, who has slipped back inside after the Baron and his guards pulls a face at the slight to his home and his parents' business.

The scarred, metal-armed man clears his throat delicately.

"M'lord baron, sir, while these travelers are certainly most welcome at your home, had not we best attend to the, er, creatures of which they speak?" he says in a harsh, croaking voice.

"Right!  Creatures.  If there are creatures here, I will get rid of them.  Believe me."

"Izek, go upstairs and investigate.  See that they are dealt with."

Izek waits to see if any of the party intend to accompany him up the stairs.
