In reply to DM (msg # 198):

Oz allows his left hand to become sheathed in flame and moves to follow the six-fingered metal-armed man upstairs.

Alaric wordlessly follows Izek.

Not enough space for us and his ego in the same room.

He turns to the other man. You have experience dealing with these types of things? he asks neutrally.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Joaquín thinks back to his encounter with this blowhard's son, wondering if it wouldn't be better for everyone if they let the vampyres kill this incompetent fellow during what is surely going to be a hell of a fight.  He straps on his shield and readies his warhammer, saying:

We've been told there are 6 of them, perhaps a few more of the townguards would be helpful? You know, in case things get out of hand. Pun intended

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Izek smirks a bit at Oz's hand as if to convey "that's cute."

"Enough, I daresay," he replies to Alaric, equally neutrally.  "No doubt you and your friends are far more experienced in these matters."

The stairs open up on to a large junk room that takes up a majority of the upper floor.  Cobwebs and a heavy layer of dust obscure most of the trappings of the room, which largely consist of projects in various states of completion as well as pieces of detritus.

The only things noticeably free of dust are six large wooden crates clustered in the far corner of the room.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"More guards?" Vargas Vallakavich rails downstairs.  "Bad idea, believe me. The people can't know there's anything dangerous going on.  Could attract the wrong sort of attention, spoil the festival.  Believe me. Like I always say, "All will be well," and I intend to keep it that way.  No, we handle this on the down low."
"And that includes dealing with you," he adds, turning on Henrik. "I haven't decided what your punishment will be for harboring monsters, but it's gonna be harsh.  Believe me. You," he barks to the second guard.  "Take him away and deal with him accordingly."
"But sir," the guard says hesitantly, staring pointedly up the stairs.
"I said do it NOW!" Vargas snarls, effectively putting an end to any debate.
Nico, if you're not coming would you mind lending us your stakes?  I've got a feeling we'll need them.
I have a few stakes as well but I think we might be better served with magic and daylight.
Do you think we would be able to move these "crates" without disturbing their owners too much?  Maybe secure them?  It would be ideal if we could just take these crates outside...
I suppose what I really want is just an advantage... Tobias mutters quietly.
If moving them would disturb them, a construction project right next to them would definitely do it.  What we should probably try to do it take advantage of where we are, Oz.  I bet you anything a carpenter like Henrik has nails, hammers, or even better ways of securing these boxes.  THEN, we can move them and not care how angry the now captives are.
Tobias goes back downstairs to search for the needed tools and supplies.
Alaric nods to Tobias. Agreed. We should be cautious, but we do want to get these coffins out into the daylight before we breach them, if at all possible.
Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Tobias heads back downstairs to gather the various items needed to try and secure the crates containing Henrik's guests.  When he gets to the entry room, the guard Vargas brought with him is binding the carpenter's hands behind his back while the Baron screams in Henrik's face, his own face growing an alarming dark shade of burnt orange.
"---DARE YOU, YOU ARE A DISGRACE TO THIS TOWN, YOU ARE A SAD, SAD LOSER. I'LL HAVE YOU KNOW I--Oh, welcome back!  Is the monster containment underway? That's terrific, just terrific.
On Henrik's worktable are all of the woodworking tools Tobias might desire, though perhaps not in top-notch condition.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In the upper room, Izek rubs the metal fingers on his right arm together casually.  With a *whumpf* noise, his arm becomes enveloped in a curtain of flame that dances along the metal in shades of red and black.  From downstairs, the noise of yelling can be heard.

"My lord Baron grows impatient," Izek says.  "Best get this underway."

If he doesn't want vampires running around his town ruining his festival, he'll just have to wait. We're going to do this the right way, or not at all, Alaric states flatly.

Tobias returns with several hammers and plenty of nails which he hands around.

Just to be on the safe side, we should probably all do this at the same time.

Izek looks around at the assembled party, then at the boxes.

"Eight of us, six of these boxes  How do you intend to accomplish this?"

"With all due respect, perhaps it would be more prudent for myself and your, er, fire mage there--or perhaps the young auburn haired lady--to stand by ready to strike while the rest of you work with the tools.  Just a thought."

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Joaquin takes his hammer and nails from Tobias, and considering Izek's suggestion he makes for  the crate in the northeast corner by the two windows, puts his shield and warhammer down in an easily accessible place (AC currently 16) and asks Boo to be looking down on them since they really have no idea how to handle vampyres:

Por favor, gran dios Bos, vigilenos, porque no sabemos mucho sobre vampiros!

And after kissing his holy symbol, Joaquin takes up the much smaller hammer and nails and gets ready to trap his vampyre.

Ready when you all are

Izek nods curtly and stands against the back wall, the weird black and red flames dancing eerily down his metal arm.

"Ready when someone gives the word.  Unless anyone has a better plan?"

[Izek: readied action to fire blast a box if something springs from it, assuming that his proposed plan remains unchanged.]

In reply to DM (msg # 214):

Oz frowns at the man's metal arm.

"If you cause a fire that spreads to the rest of the town, I'm not taking the blame for it," he mutters.

Nevertheless, he readies a simple firebolt for whatever pops out of the coffin.

Of course.

Viktoriya moves to a corner of the room, rolling up her sleeves as a shimmering mantle of force settles over her.

[Mage Armor]

If she's nervous about confronting vampires, she hides it well. She makes ready to blast anything dead and pallid.

Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Izek nods approvingly as Oz and Viktoriya take up readied positions, the three mages forming a rough triangle.

"NOW!" the baron's henchman bellows, and the party goes to town with hammer and nails.

At this point, a number of things happen simultaneously:

Alaric, Astrid, and Nico manage to get their boxes nailed down, if not tightly then at least adequately.  The inhuman shrieking and howling from inside the crates indicates that the inhabitants are far from pleased with this development.

Tobias and Joaquin are not as lucky.  Though they gamely set to the crates, they are not quite swift enough and from out of their boxes--as well as from the unattended one--come bursting forth one vampyre spawn each.  The creatures look much the same as the unfortunate Doru from the village of Barovia--fishbelly white flesh with black veins showing up starkly, black ichor streaked across faces and fangs.

At this point, Izek, Oz, and Viktoriya's readied actions burst into effect.  Both Viktoriya and Oz's readied actions go wide, but Izek hurls a Targaryen-colored ball of flame at the vampyre spawn nearest Tobias.

[Damage (Vampyre Spawn A): 7]

~~~~Fight!  Round 1~~~~~~
Alaric 25
Nico 23
Izek 21
Joaquin 16
Tobias 13
Viktoriya 6
Vampyres 5
Astrid 1
Oz 0 [Yes, somehow you achieved an initiative of 0]
Things to know:
The battle map has been updated to reflect your current positioning.  Black spaces on the map represent impassable piles of junk.  The brown squares are successfully closed crates.  Along the eastern wall you will see three small black rectangles at equal intervals.  These are windows, currently shuttered to prevent sunlight from spilling in.  Because it is afternoon though, this doesn't impede your ability to see.  Light filters in from the stairwell, located in the lower left corner behind Viktoriya.
Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
As the party takes up their positions, Alaric produces a small glass phial from his pouch, uncorks it, and swallows its contents. After a few moments his heartbeat begins to increase noticeably. His veins, normally faintly visible due to his pale complexion, darken into an ugly bluish-black.
[Potion of Celerity]
When the vampyres burst from their coffins, he immediately draws his single-edged sword and charges the nearest one, his left hand tracing out the blood-red rune you recall from the previous fight with the wolves.
[Sign: Ipabog]
He brings his hand back to the hilt of his sword to deliver a cut into the enemy, but does not carving as deeply into it as he would have liked.
[Damage: 8]
[OOC - seriously, minimum damage with rerolls. FML]
Knock out the windows! he yells.
OOC: Posting from my phone in the interest of not wasting time... also don't have handy access to the Google doc, so I appreciate if someone can update it for me.
Nico quickly reacts by drawing his short sword and dashing over to the nearest window. He strikes the window with his sword, taking care not to cut himself on broken glass (OOC: is this an attack? I rolled a 19 if so). The window shatters with a loud crash and sunlight streams into the room. Nico backs 5' away from the window, but stays within its light (so that any attacker has to enter the light to touch him).
Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Nico shatters the window and tiny pieces of glass rain down upon him, but he casually shakes them off and remains by the now open window.  The two vampyre spawn closest to him hiss and recoil from the light, but the one in the corner is still shrouded from the sun.
Izek moves to aid Tobias and Alaric in the corner.  He draws a nasty-looking battleaxe and chops twice at the cornered fiend.
[Attack: 13]
[Attack: 23]
One of his attacks sinks into the vampyre's shoulder with a satisfying *crunch.*
Chapter 3: "All Will Be Well"
Joaquin realizes that opening up the window in the corner would be very useful indeed, but not being blessed with the ability to fly, he has only one choice:  Throw the hammer he was using to nail the box closed and hope to Boo it knocks open the shutters.
[Light hammer throw 6
Light hammer throw 7]
After letting go of the little hammer and not bothering to look to see if he succeeded, Joaquin raises his warhammer in two hands and yells Soy el arcipreste de Boo, teman su poder! he swings mightily at the vampyrling nearest to him, perhaps too mightily as he simply misses the vampyrling. Should have picked up your shield.  When will you ever learn?
Viktoriya moves away from the vampyres, incanting a spell under her breath.
[Casting: Magic Missile]
Four tiny icicles form in the air in front of her and shoot out, peppering the vampyre next to Alaric and Izek with stinging arcane energy.
