Character Creation

Characters have 70 points to spend on character creation.

Assign however many points you like between the four attributes: Psyche, Presence, Prowess, Physicality.  There is no attribute auction.

Purchase whatever powers you like that are available to PCs.

Artifacts

Artifacts are magical or technological items that provide some special abilities.  A skeleton key that opens any lock would be one example, as would a ring that makes you extra strong.

Most any artifact can be statted up in Lords of Gossamer and Shadow rules. Each will have a point cost based on how powerful it is.  If you want an artifact describe it to me and I'll see about working up the point cost for it.  If you have the Lords of Gossamer and Shadow rules, feel free to work it up yourself and send me the stats for approval.

Bad Stuff

You can spend more character points than 70 on character creation.  The excess you spend becomes Bad Stuff.  Essentially bad luck that follows your character around.  Bad Stuff can be invoked in a number of ways in the game.

If a sniper is going to take a shot at one of the group at random, it'll probably be the one with the most Bad Stuff.  If you're found someplace you shouldn't be, the NPC's initial reaction will be based on your Bad Stuff.  If it's high, they might shoot first.  If it's low, they might just be suspicious.

You may have at most 10 points of Bad Stuff.

Buying Off Bad Stuff

Bad Stuff can be bought off over time using character points you get from completing adventures.  You can only buy off 1 point of Bad Stuff for each character advancement session.

Good Stuff

If you do not spend all your 70 points on character creation then the points you don't spend become Good Stuff.  Essentially good luck that follows your character around.

You may have at most 10 points of Good Stuff.

Spending Good Stuff

You may not add to your Good Stuff after character creation.  You may spend from Good Stuff at any point outside of character advancement to get new attribute levels, powers, or artifacts.  The points spent in this way cannot be replenished.

Character Creation

Powers Available

If you have the Lords of Gossamer and Shadow rules, be aware that most of the powers are not available in this game.  This is a street level game where magic/tech items will give the PCs the edge rather than innate powers.

Some of the talents from The Long Walk are listed here and are available to be purchased at character creation time.

Access to the Stair - 5 points

This ability allows a character to perceive and open Doors onto the Stair.  Once open anyone may enter the Stair through the Door.  Once on the Stair this ability can be used to open a Door into another world.

A least one PC should take this ability, probably more than one.  A person without this ability will find themselves stuck on whatever side of a Door they're left on.

Other Powers

This is not an exhaustive list of powers available.  You can create your own custom power and I can tell you the point cost.  In general, powers should be ones that fit the street level Earth-origin nature of the game.  Strange powers may exist, but they should not be obvious or generally provide an extreme advantage.

The attribute listed is the one that guides how strong the power is.

Aetheric Trance - Psyche - 5 points

The character can meditate and separate her astral form from her body.  The astral form is invisible and intangible.  While in a trance, rather than separating her astral form, the character may heal using Psyche instead of Physicality.

Aetheric Healing - Psyche - 5 points

Required: Aetheric Trance.  Character may siphon psychic energy from others to heal.

Aetheric Visions - 5 points

Required: Aetheric Trance.  Character may invite visions, but has no control over their content.

Aetheric Travel - Psyche - 5 points

Required: Aetheric Trance.  Character's astral form may fly or teleport to locations she knows well.

Aetheric Perception - Psyche - 5 points

Character may see other astral forms and similar phenomenon when not in astral form.

Aura Sense and Item Reading - Psyche - 5 points

Character may read auras to get a sense of the truth of statements or personality of the target, and may read items to get an idea of history or use.

Danger Sense - Psyche - 5 points

Character gets some level of warning of impending danger.  Generally only refers to short-term danger.

A Talent for Languages - Psyche - 3 points

Character learns new languages abnormally quickly, often with just a few hours of exposure.

Create Scrying Media - Psyche - 5 points

Character can create some media for scrying.  This object is personal to them and can only be used by them for scrying.  A mirror could be used, for example, or a playing card.
