In reply to Erbin Shay (msg # 24):

That is correct...since the mechanics work on a percentile system, each (1) point spent on a skill equals a 1% bonus when rolling against that skill.  You can either opt to spend points generically (i.e. just put them into general Hunting) or you can spend them in the subsets to specialize.  You DO NOT have to put points into a subsets' main skill to specialize (in other words, you don't have to put any points into Hunting specifically to spend points on specializations like trapping).

Got it thanks, that was what I was guessing. So overall is it more cost effective to spend points directly on the main skill instead of the sub-skills?

That would really end up being situational.  For instance, a Melee (unarmed) skill is good for most fighting but if you're doing called shots or specific moves, it would be more advantageous to have a specialization.  Or with Hunting...having the broad skill would still allow you to trap, but with specialization comes a better chance of success as well as skills that an average person wouldn't have picked up.

Ah, I see. That makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.

Not a problem, and please don't hesitate with any questions you may have.  Getting feedback and input from players will help me build this into a well-rounded game.

Looks good to me and if you think of any additional skills that I overlooked let me know.  One note, I didn't make fire-building a skill as even most children in the clans are capable of making a fire, the same applies to a lot of 'basic' things one would need to know in order to survive as the clans do.

Remember, the points to add to your skills are not base scores but adjustments for when actions are taken.  So if you possess a +20% bonus in Marksmanship (assisted) and the GM says you've got a 60% chance to make a shot, you would in essence have an 80% chance. :D

I do have a question on a couple skills. For stealth and sneaking, will stalking govern that? and climbing will acrobatics cover it?

In reply to Erbin Shay (msg # 32):

1) Yes, any type of stealth action where you are attempting to move while remaining quiet would be covered under stalking.  I would argue it takes a lot more skill to sneak up on a wild animal as opposed to a normal human, hence why it was included under the Hunting skill set.

2) That would depend entirely on the situation...attempting to race up a ladder would mostly be related to ones' strength but racing up a piece of rope while attempting to dodge small arms fire would certainly include Acrobatics.

I'm going to drop. Writer's block is a bitch, and I can't get a feel for the character.

In reply to Heart of the Mountain (msg # 41):

so, is this largely a free form game with a little bit of d100 chance? how exactly do skills play into it? cause I am finally finishing my sheet and I see that in order to be noticeably proficient in most skills I will need to spend a 5th or a 3rd of my starting points...

also, when I spend points... do I put them in things like build/repair or in the subs like mechanical?

(another example; in lore? or in losty things?)

The points you're adding to the skills section are actually counted as bonuses.  The GM would decide the difficulty of a particular action (% based) and you would add any bonuses that apply.  So if you are given a 50% chance to succeed at say, tracking a hunter in your area, and you have a +15 in tracking, then you technically only have to beat 35%.

As for spending them, it's and/or.  You can spend them generically or you can specialize.  So you can have a general skill level in build/repair, or specialize in mechanical, or put points into both.  How this applies depends on the situation.  So having points in generic build/repair would give you a bonus to figure out, say, something wrong with a 4-wheeler.  But you would probably need a good bonus in mechanical to fix something like a busted carburetor.

Wherever looks like a good spot.  You would have arrived with the group on the previous day so you could potentially be anywhere in camp (or even have wandered off into the woods).
