Chapter 6A: Locked in the Constable's Dungeon

From Chapter 5A: The Trollip and Troll...
DM:
As the Mayor considers his uncomfortable options, the hooded man speaks. "And why exactly am I still locked up? Clearly these are criminals, and the only reason I was imprisoned was due to their word. Well I say they kidnapped me and accused me of crimes I never committed. I am no necromancer. Certainly the Good Sister meant for me to be released!"

The Mayor fires an annoyed look at the hooded man. "The Sister said nothing about you, so until this is all straightened out, you will stay here."

The hooded man throws his arms in the air in disbelief and plops back down on his bench with a mutter.

Kevril, obviously worn from the days events, sits on the floor and stares through Therarak and Thorfire's cell to the protesting hooded man. The youngster looks exhausted and seems lost in thought, but says nothing.

Meanwhile, outside the office in the park, Lazaret observes the wakening town from atop the statue of Stall Stronghammer. He displaces the raven on his way up, the bird protesting slightly before flapping away, eventually circling the statue several times and then eventually landing atop the chimney of the Constable's Office. From there Lazaret feels like the raven looks straight at him and nods before continuing his observations back and forth along the streets of town.

Aside from the bird, nobody seems to have any idea that there is a Tabaxi perched atop the statue. People are beginning to mill about town with their daily routine. Lazaret sees a group of four guards rush to the Stronghammer Inn and a fifth to the north toward Polly's Puffy Pillow, the scene of last night's crime.

Thorfire Shortankard:
In reply to DM (msg # 66):

While Thorfire is sliding his dagger into his boot, he hears the rustling of feathers. Thorfire looks skyward and see the raven.  He senses the raven is more than just a bird.

09:43, Today: Thorfire Shortankard rolled 10 using 1d20+2.  Perception.

He also looks around and strains his hearing to see if the guards have left and closed the trap door

09:44, Today: Thorfire Shortankard rolled 17 using 1d20+2.  Perception.

If the guards are gone and no one is around, he takes his thieves tools from a hidden compartment in the heel of his boot and calmly picks the lock, but leaves the door closed for now.

09:46, Today: Thorfire Shortankard rolled 15 using 1d20+5.  Sleight of Hand (picking lock).

Celador Qiris:
Thorfire:
While Thorfire is sliding his dagger into his boot, he hears the rustling of feathers. Thorfire looks skyward and see the raven.  He senses the raven is more than just a bird.

aren't the prison cells in the basement? Are there windows?

"Settle down. Sister Gwendelon will be here soon enough and then you'll answer to her," Celador responds to the hooded mans complaints.

Celador observes Thorfire picking the lock and gives him a subtle nod and thumbs up. He gestures to Kevril to keep his mouth shut.

Thorfire Shortankard:
In reply to Celador Qiris (msg # 69):

Thorfire thought he could see the raven perching on top of the chimney...

Chapter 6A: Locked in the Constable's Dungeon

The mayor and guards proceed up the stairs and close and bar the door. The cells are lit now only by torchlight.

"Great,"
Kevril groans. "I didn't really think I'd be back here once I got out."

In the next cell, Thorfire fishes out a portion of his toolkit and begins working the lock. It is no rudimentary subject, however with time, the Halfling's nimble fingers coerce it into submission. With a satisfying click, the latch turns and the cell door is free to open.

Not able to see Thorfire's success from his own cell, the hooded man continues to taunt his new roommates. "Don't tell me to settle down, elf. Sister Gwendelon will come back and when she does, she'll free me and see that you murderers are all hung from the highest yardarm! It's a shame those bugbears didn't rip you all to pieces when they had the chance. If they had, Morlough Merris would still be alive."

Chapter 6A: Locked in the Constable's Dungeon

Although only ten feet apart, the stone walls between cells isolate the three groups considerably. Celador tries the bars to his cell and finds they are quite sturdy. Straining his ears for clues above, he can only make out bits and pieces of the Mayor's conversation with the others. It is impossible to tell who is speaking, but at different times, the elf picks up a few short phrases.
"Need to find that Tabaxi."
"Take their belongings to the armory for now."
"Maybe it was just him."
"And what about this hooded man?"

Easier to hear, unfortunately, Malik makes a point of speaking with distinct clarity. "So which of you did it, anyway? Was it really the Tabaxi? Halfling, I know you're quite good with a rapier yourself. I'm betting it was you, Halfling. Am I right?

After sitting awhile, then standing, first being quiet, then quietly humming to himself, Celador calls out "Hey! Mr Mayor! Mr. Jailkeeper! When do you expect that Sister Gwendelon will be back? And do you think you could give us a little something to eat?"

It is obvious to Kevril that the wood elf is quite bored.

"It's a three day ride to Alaka," a voice shouts down through the closed door (Celador can't tell if it's the Mayor or one of the guards). "So you can expect to be down there for at least a week."

Kevril drops his face into his hands at the prospect of being jailed for another week. "At least a week," he sighs. "Well, at least you took care of the hooded man. Otherwise Gwendelon might not have even made it to the bridge, let alone all the way to Alaka."

Celador's argument is answered by silence from the office above. It is likely that porridge and biscuits are not coming any time soon.

"It'll be a while before they bother feeding us," Kevril predicts in a depressed tone. "I fear without Gwendelon here, it might be more time than usual between meals."

In reply to Therarak Gemfinder (msg # 11):

Sensing that they will be left alone for some time, Thorfire opens the cell door and goes to Celador's door and quickly picks the lock.

22:24, Today: Thorfire Shortankard rolled 18 using 1d20+5, rerolling ones.  Sleight of Hand (Picking the lock).

Whispering to Celador and Kevril he says, Therarak and I are going to try to escape through the chimney and meet up with Lazaret.  You big folk won't fit so we will have to figure out a way to spring you loose or find the proof to exonerate us.  Once we climb up the chimney, can you replace the grate in case we need to break out again?
I don't want them to find out how we escaped.

Thorfire and Therarak make their way to the storage area.  Luckily there is a barrel handy to stand on while Thorfire uses his dagger to pry off the grate.

He whispers,Therarak while I pry this off, can you look in the supplies for some make shift weapons for us and our friends?

Therarak finds a couple of crowbars used to open the crates and hands one to Thorfire.

Chapter 6A: Locked in the Constable's Dungeon

Thorfire deftly picks the lock on Celador's cell freeing the Elf and Kevril into the adjoining hallway.

The Halfling rolls the barrel from the doorway of the supply cell only a small distance to place it under the grate. Standing on the barrel, he can't quite reach the ceiling, but he finds another crate, stacks it onto the barrel and with that, can easily access it.

He jabs his dagger into the seam between grate and ceiling and is surprised at how easily the grate comes out. Almost no prying required.

With the grate removed, he stares up into the morning sky and readies himself for the short leap into the chimney. Before he does, however, his concentration is interrupted by a slow mocking applause from the third cell. There stands Malik.

"Well played, Halfling," he mocks. "You picked the locks and it looks like you have access to freedom. What a shame it would be for your plans if I were to raise an alert while the four of you are scurrying about outside your cells." A slow, smug smile creeps across his face.

OOC: Please see important clarifications in the OOC thread. Short summary: on the downside, you don't have crowbars, but on the upside, Kevril and Celador probably would fit in the chimney.

If the hooded man makes too much noise, Thorfire picks the lock and knocks the asshole unconscious.

As Celador steps onto the barrel and offers a hand to Thorfire, the hooded man interrupts. "You give me no choice but to sound the alarm. Put yourself in my shoes. If you depart and I say nothing, Sister Gwendelon will have me skinned alive for not alerting anyone when it happened. I'd be sacrificing my life for no benefit to myself. So how about an offer? You pick my lock, let me depart along with you, and I keep my mouth closed. Once we're up top, we go our separate ways. Otherwise I have no choice but to sound the alarm. And I'm certain Traitlin would make it down here before you could pick my lock and get in here to quiet me."

He smiles a crooked smile and shrugs his shoulders with palms upward. "The way I see it, you don't really have a choice. So do we have a deal?"

Celador walks back into his cell and closes the door.

"I am confident that Sister Gwendelon will find that we are innocent of the charges against us and our names will be cleared." He gives Thorfire a wink in such a way that the hooded man cannot see this signal. "I am sure that Lazaret is working to find the real killer even as we sit here."

Chapter 6A: Locked in the Constable's Dungeon

Therarak focusses on the conversation above and recognizes the female voice of Mattis Bumbleford, the barmaid from the Trollip and Troll. Not everything is clear, but much of it is.

"...that they couldn't have done it,"
she contends.

"But we don't know when the murder happened either, Miss Bumbleford," the Mayor explains. "That's the problem."

More muffled conversation back and forth.

"A lot of people didn't like Morlough Merris."

"I'll grant you that."

"...greedy, arrogant..."

"Can't argue."

Thorfire, meanwhile digs through the crates. He is unable to find a crowbar to help with their opening, but he is able to pry them open with his dagger. The contents are general supplies: food, rope, paper, some trail rations, and general tools (hammers, nails, a hand saw, and some wooden stakes).

"Maybe they can help you solve..."

"They're suspects!"

"Along with every man, woman, and child in Westbank."

A long pause...

Thorfire continues to rifle through the crates. One of the smaller ones opens easily. More easily than the others, like one of the top slats has been opened before. The crate contains
some clothing, but underneath that is an fairly large stash of jewelry. Five gem studded rings and a ruby-adorned necklace.

"Please! You must tell them we are innocent! Or at the very least they should allow you to bring us some of your mutton" -...maybe that last bit wasn't a strong enough close...- he thinks.

"We want to protect Westbank! Not kill it's law abiding citizens!" -...better. not perfect. but better...-

"Celador?" Mattis calls from the other side of the door. "Oh, my goodness. Celador, stay there and Mattis will bring you and your friends some food."

The conversation continues upstairs, but isn't entirely clear. Judging by the firmness of Mattis's voice, however, the listeners below conclude that food from the Trollip and Troll is on its way and the guards will be hard pressed to stop its delivery.

After a few moments, the Mayor opens the door, descends the stairs, and takes a seat about half way down them. "You've made quite the impression on Ms. Bumbleford," he confesses. "And others, as well."

He takes a deep breath and sighs. "So you contend that you didn't do it. You want to help Westbank? Then explain to me what happened. If you didn't do this, then who did? And why?"

When the mayor comes down to talk, Celador intently listens.

"Good Sir Mayor. I have only arrived in your town recently so I cannot claim to know the list of grievances against Mr. Merris," he replies, "what I can tell you, as you may recall, he had his goons attack Mr. Lazaret for supposedly stowing away in his caravan. Unfortunately we needed to settle that disagreement with swords." Celador thinks maybe that is not the best thing to talk about and quickly moves on.

"But there were many witnesses who can tell you that Mr. Merris approached us last night and asked us to let bygones be bygones. He even bought us dinner as a sign of no hard feelings!" He says this a little louder in case Mattis is still here and can corroborate the story.

"There was a man we met on the road who was leaving town with his wares because of some fued with Mr Merris. It seemed to me that Mr Merris was the type of man that could, shall we say, rub some people the wrong way," Celador continues, sensing that his argument is appealing to the Mayor's sensibilities, "We did not kill him, but if you let us out we can help find who did."

Chapter 6A: Locked in the Constable's Dungeon

The Mayor listens carefully to Celador's plea, nodding his head in agreement from time to time. Once the Elf finishes, he sits quietly for a moment before making his final decision.

Just as he opens his mouth to speak, however, he is interrupted by a voice from the 3rd cell. "You're not going to actually believe this garbage, are you?" Malik asks. "This sounds like the trickery of a guilty party, if you ask me."

Rising to his feet and descending the stairs, the Mayor shoots a sharp look at the hooded man. "I don't recall asking for your opinion, Malik."

"Maybe you should. You seem to want it from these other criminals."

And just as the Mayor opens his mouth to reply, he is interrupted again. This time from a voice from atop the stairs. "Mister Mayor," a voice calls excitedly. "I have a witness that I think you should speak to."

Down the stairs comes a young guard with an excited look on his face "He said he saw someone rushing away from the Inn last night, carrying a rapier!".

Is am not following your logic Yasha.  This man claims to have seen someone with a rapier.  There could be any number of people in this town that carries such a weapon.  He said they were my size, but did he see their face?  Did he see the actual murder while it was committed? His statement doesn't prove anything.  What evidence is there to support this claim?

"He's right. The rapier is uncommon in Westbank," the Mayor interjects matter-of-factly to Thorfire. "In fact, until you and your feline friend came to town a few days ago, none had been seen in quite some time, which made the matter of Morlough Merris being run through with one last night a point of interest. It cast a suspicious shadow on the two of you to say the least." He gives a long look at the thick-accented stranger before continuing. "However if this young man claims to have seen someone else carrying such a weapon so close to the time and place of the murder, then it seems our initial suspicions must be re-examined."

He gives each of them a look before returning his eyes to Yasha. "You're certain it wasn't a Halfling or an Elf, then. But what about a Tabaxi? Could the figure you saw last night have been a Tabaxi? They are, after all, taller than halflings."

The Mayor rubs his chin thoughtfully, looking the stranger in the eyes. "Neither Halfling nor Tabaxi? Then who?" He glances toward the young guard. "Tyus, what do think?"

Tyus straightens. "Well, uh. I don't really know. There are more than a handful who had a complaint with the late mister Merris."

"You don't have to remind me. Mattis Bumbleford was lecturing me on that fact about 10 minutes ago."
The Mayor turns into the first cell to Celador. "You offered to help earlier. I think I'll take you up on the offer if it still stands. Might I interest you in a murder mystery? The Good Sister is expected back in a week's time. We'll need it solved before she returns or we'll all be facing the wrath of Sister Gwendelon!"

"I can't wait to get to the bottom of this mystery," he says cheerfully, then rubbing his stomach, "but not before I get something to eat!"

Chapter 6A: Locked in the Constable's Dungeon

The mayor reaches for a ring of keys on his hip, but as he does, Malik protests from the back cell. "You aren't actually believing this fiction, are you? I suppose if some stranger walked in and told you that lake was made of gold, you'd believe that, too."

Malik and the Mayor exchange words for a moment, but they are both interrupted by a rustle that starts in the office above and appears on the stairs as one Mattis Bumbleford, barmaid from the Trollip and Troll. "My goodness," she starts. "You all look famished." She carries a bag from which she pulls a narrow loaf of bread and hands it to Celador. After a hesitation, she pulls it back, places the loaf back into the bag, and then stuffs the whole bag through the bars. "Here. Take the whole bag. Your friend with the long whiskers helped me pack it."

The Mayor does his best to explain to Mattis that it isn't allowable for citizens to simply pass uninspected bags to prisoners. For her part, Mattis doesn't accept such rules and does her best to explain to the Mayor why.

Finally, after a short argument, the Mayor explains to Mattis that the four prisoners (Celador, Thorfire, Therarak, and Kevil Moonstone) are about to be released to assist with the investigation into the death of Morlough Merrs.

Chapter 6A: Locked in the Constable's Dungeon

With Malik protesting vehemently, the Mayor pulls a key and unlocks the first door, pausing after he turns it as if something in the mechanism was not exactly as he expected. He repeats the process on Thorfire and Therarak's cell, again stopping for an uncomfortable moment as he turns the key. He gives the Halfling a look from the corner of his eye, but says nothing as he pulls the door open.

Mattis bustles busily as the prisoners depart, pulling bread and fruit from the sack she handed Celador and giving some of it to each of the others. Even Yasha, Tyus, and the Mayor end up with some bread. Once everything has been distributed, she coughs rather suspiciously and points with her eyes toward the bottom of the sack. Celador glances in his bag to find a small piece of bread, two small apples, and a dagger. Lazaret's dagger, to be precise.

The Mayor motions everyone up the stairs and they return to the office above. From there, Mattis bids Celador (and to a lesser extent the others) farewell as she returns to work.

"We have about a week to figure this out," The Mayor figures aloud. "If we don't have it by then, I'm afraid Gwendelon might well arrest me right along with the rest of you! So far all we know is our murderer is a man. That limits our list of suspects down to about 500 people... including me, Enoch over there at the desk, and every other guard in town except for Traitlin. He rubs his hands through his hair in frustrated thought. We need a shorter list than that."

Lazaret makes his way to the jail and waits upstairs with the constable.

"So are they coming up soon? Now that they are free men, as they always should have been, I would expect that their release is hasty and notwithstanding forthwith with undue delay.

"I'm sure they are more than excited to see me since I was the one who secured their release. Once when I was at sea my captain was captured by marauders wearing uniforms that looked suspiciously like those of the royal navy. They were fakes. I am certain of it. Well I laid low below deck and then pursued his captors in a small row boat. Under cover of darkness I was able to catch up to their ship and climbed up the bark to an open port hole.

"These claws have served me well, I must say.

"Once on board I made my way to the brig where my captain was incarcerated. The guards were far too large for me to subdue, but they were avid card players and aficionados of cheap liquor. Fortunately I had brought along a deck of cards and a large bottle of fine brandy. Within an hours time they were both short fifty gold or so and unconscious. I was able to relieve my captain of his bonds we both escaped through the open port hole and rowed back to our ship.

"So if you ever need someone sprung from jail, just give a holler and...is that them coming up the stairs now?"

"This first song is a lullaby that I remember from my younger days. The sailors would whistle and sing to keep me quiet. The words I have long since forgotten, but I recall the gist of the tune as being a rather filthy tale of an unfaithful lover and a prostitute who turned out to be a man. The story was quite awful, but the tune was most soothing."

In reply to Taylin Naar (msg # 49):

I am a little shaky on the details, did the murder happen inside the inn or outside nearby?

"The murder happened in Mr. Merris's room," the Mayor explains. "There were blood stains on the bed linens and he was found lying on the floor next to the bed. There was a rope hanging in front of the window. We presume this is how the murderer entered without being seen by anyone in the hotel."

He then turns to Yasha. "But he didn't count on a late comer arriving next door just as he was leaving. The Northerner here said he saw a man with a rapier just outside the inn. He didn't know it at the time, but he was watching the murderer leave the scene of the crime."

By the time the Mayor has provided this much of an explanation, the room has filled with the surprisingly soothing notes of Lazaret's flute.

Enoch, trying unsuccessfully to focus on a pile of paperwork, has his face buried in his hands while the tabaxi plays. At the same time, Tyus returns with a wagon containing the belongings of the former prisoners.

"So where next, the young guard inquires while handing belongings to each of the adventurers. "Back to the room? Would you like to examine the body? I haven't searched that grove of trees to the south yet, either."

Chapter 6A: Locked in the Constable's Dungeon

Together again in the Constable's office, the heroes exchange notes with themselves, as well as with the new witness who, at least temporarily, has freed them from the dungeon below. Lazaret scans the office for any loose keys, but somewhat surprisingly, the guards seem to at least have that part of their business under control. None are seen except for the ring fastened tightly to the Mayor's belt, which even the quickest of thieves would be hard pressed to attain.
22:02, Yesterday: DM rolled 51 using 1d100.  50% chance of spare key being available (roll of 50 or lower).

For his part, the Mayor apologizes for his rush to judgement against the group, admitting that the entire town is a bit on edge with the recent uptick in rumors regarding the orcs of the red tooth assembling, undead haunting the northern road, and even tales of the drow ascending from underground to terrorize the surface.

Talk returns to the murder case, but before they get far into the details, their discussion is interrupted by a woman who stumbles into the office. Brown wavy hair matted in sweat hangs down into her eyes. She wears leather armor, and protruding from said armor are two arrows, one in the back and another just under her ribs. "Gwendelon," she gasps. "I've been told to ask for Gwendelon."

She winces in pain and drops to a knee.

"Two miles. No more. There's a narrowing of the trail there. A stone wall on the west and a big drop on the east. Garrith and I rode ahead and the bastards crawled out of the wall. Cut us off from the rest of the caravan. They filled us both full of arrows. I was the lucky one. I got away. Garrith wasn't so lucky."

"Our caravan is mostly leather goods, but we do have a few special mining tools. We aim to make it all the way to Cathid and trade with the dwarves there. They wouldn't have ridden ahead if we didn't report back. I'm hopeful they are still south of the ambush sight, and still alive. But if the orcs go looking, the caravan won't be able to hold them off."

OOC: By the looks of the arrows still sticking out from Kathel's side, Celador concludes her story is believable. The arrows are crude but effective, typical of an orc "craftsman". She herself is dressed in slightly finer clothing than most in the Northlands. She wears light boots, not the thick hide variety common in these parts. The clothes suggest she comes from the more civilized world far to the south.

Re: Chapter 6A: Locked in the Constable's Dungeon

Lazaret:
Lazaret turns to the mayor. "We shall ride South and dispatch the orcs. They always carry gold, don't they? Mayor, where are our horses?"

The Mayor, growing wiser by the minute when it comes to dealing with Lazaret, rolls his eyes. Before he can answer negatively, however, another voice is heard.

"I can get you horses," the voice says. It is young Kevril, almost forgotten in the past few minutes. "I have a friend who works at the stable. But you have to let me ride with you."

Re: Chapter 6A: Locked in the Constable's Dungeon

Kathel, meanwhile, has carefully removed the arrows from her person. She examines them. Crude, but effective, the feathers dyed blood red. Yasha recognizes this as another calling card of the Orcs of the Red Tooth.

She gratefully takes Therarak's healing potion, grimacing noticeably as she drinks it. Regardless of the taste, the affect is immediately evident. Her eyes sharpen within a matter of seconds. "Thank you, my friend. I have to admit, I didn't expect a Tabaxi and a Svirfneblin to be the first to come to my aid when I arrived in Westbank."

Re: Chapter 6A: Locked in the Constable's Dungeon

"Kevril my boy! I knew you would come in handy! Do you think you are up to fighting orcs?" Celador turns and responds to the boy.

He looks around at the crew assembled and lands on the newcomer with the funny accent, "It appears we are about to go rescue a merchant caravan from some orcs. You seem to be familiar with them. How are you with a sword and a bow?"

Celador scrutinizes his vestments and his obvious lack of any trappings of a soldier or fighter.

What can Celador tell about this new guy?

He talks funny. Other than that, not much.

In reply to Celador Qiris (msg # 71):

"Get the horses! Run before the mayor changes his mind."

Turning to Yasha. "Who is this? Friend of yours, Enis? Where did he come from? I do hope he speaks common because all I heard was jibberish. If we have to hire a translator that will cut dearly into our profits." Lazaret takes one of the arrows and examines it, batting at the feathers a little more than he really should.

Yasha mumbles something about the arrow as he inspects it. Then when the Tabaxi finishes his questions and comments he turns and looks at the Tabaxi. Realizing that he hadn't introduced himself.

Re: Chapter 6A: Locked in the Constable's Dungeon

The Mayor clearly doesn't like the idea of sending Kevril out to deal with bloodthirsty orcs, but he likes the idea of sending a contingent of the town's guards to do it even less.

It is over an hour before Kevril returns. It takes that long to convince his friend of the importance of loaning him five horses, to argue against, but eventually accept three horses, then to return to his own home to equip his own horse, all before returning to the office.

In total (counting his own) there are four horses. Kevril suggests (apologetically) that the halfling and gnome will have to share a ride with one of the bigger riders. The horses are nothing special. One of the three, Ol' Charlie, is noticeably stubborn and protests somewhat when sat upon. The other two are more cooperative, which really isn't saying much.

Once everyone is ready, Kathel leads the group down the main road. As they depart, Tyus calls to them. "Don't take too long. I still need your help solving the murder!"

OOC: In the hour before Kevril's return, players may do what they like: buy stuff, eat stuff, or just get prepared for the upcoming ride.

In reply to DM (msg # 74):

"I'm sorry but I didn't get a word of that. Did you say something about a tooth? Do you need a dentist? Perhaps you could write down what you are saying. Or maybe charades. Oh well."

Lazaret takes some time to return to the tavern telling the traders that he and his compatriots will not be able to take the job after all. "Our services are needed to the South."

"That's some nice looking armor, Thorfire. Where did you find it? Do you have money that the rest of us don't?" Lazaret bats at the studs on Thorfire's armor. "Of course, your armor only costs half what ours would."

Perhaps "liberated" would have been a better term...after all we are helping these people with orcs, hooded men, and god knows what else.
