Re: Chapter 2: The Constable's Office

In reply to Sister Gwendelon (msg # 7):

My lady.

Lazaret bows with great panache and feline grace.

We represent this wayward lad's poor mother. She has retained our services to get to the bottom of this issue before her son pays for another's deeds with his own life.

With your permission we humbly request to speak with Kevril and do what we can to clear his name. It would be a great relief to his mother and would put the rest of the town at ease to know that the real wrongdoers will be put to justice and that the threat they pose to the good people here is gone forever.

Sister Gwendelon ponders the proposal carefully before replying. "I've no doubt that clearing his name would be a great relief to Hyacinth Moonstone. She is a good woman and I am saddened that she has to deal with these dark matters. However I should also point out that Kevril himself has admitted to being a member of a local gang of bandits."

She shrugs her shoulders with a pained look upon her face. "I'm afraid the law is quite clear on matters of this type."

He is merely a boy and can be tought a lesson in a manner that would not bring woe upon his poor mother.

Therarak studies the good sister in detail to determine the deity she serves to see if there's a spiritual approach that could be taken.

Celador steps forward, performs a bow and introduces himself

Sister Gwendelon, allow me to introduce myself. I am Celador Qiris, corporal lieutenant of the elven army of Glenvendale. I pledge my sword and bow to your service while under your auspices and jurisdiction. I understand that young master Kevril came into contact with a hooded outlaw north of Westbank and that confrontation has lead to this unfortunate turn of events. In the interest of the peace and safety of the good people of Westbank, I suggest that you allow my colleagues and me to bring this person of interest to justice. Possibly in exchange for this service to your town you could be so merciful as to reduce the boy's sentence.

23:06, Today: Celador Qiris rolled 2 using 1d20.  persuasion.

OOC: I'm going to guess she's not persuaded...

While Gwendelon quietly considers the facts, Enoch sighs heavily. "Hooded outlaw? Please. The boy has you fooled and you haven't even met him yet." He turns his filmy eyes toward the thoughtful Sister. "Sister Gwendelon. I don't need to remind you that the laws are clear on this matter. I don't think it is in Westbank's interest to change the law based on the pleadings of a trio such as this."

OOC: Therarak, you notice that Sister Gwendelon wears a necklace emblazoned with the symbol of Pelor (a circle with six outwardly radiating points), god of the sun and agriculture.

In reply to DM (msg # 13):

We are not questioning matters of law here. We are simply looking into the truth.

Please, give us time to clear the boy's name. It is possible he is under the influence of a power that no one here fully understands. A power that could make someone admit to things they did not do.

Let us look into this. Justice will be served. The law will be upheld. But let us not be too hasty or justice and law may be forever tarnished here.

The Good Sister carefully considers Lazaret's words for several moments. Finally she nods to Lazaret with a sigh. "I suppose you are correct. I hold the law in high regard and would be negligent if I did anything to tarnish it. Let's speak with the boy. Enoch, would you be so kind as to assist us."

Enoch rolls his eyes and groans at the gnome's display. Sister Gwendelon, on the other hand, cracks a slight smile, noticably relieving the tension in the room.

She nods to her lieutenant. "Very well, Enoch. I believe we are ready."

Enoch rolls his eyes again, and with a sigh pulls open the trap door revealing a set of stone stairs descending into the dungeon. The passageway below flickers in torchlight.

"Well, let's see what our prisoner has to say." Gwendelon heads downstairs and motions for the others to follow.

Re: Chapter 2: The Constable's Office

"I'm keeping an eye on you, tabaxi," Enoch snarls at Lazaret while leaning the open door against the wall. Once completed, he stands atop the stairs with arms folded, glaring down into the chamber below for a moment before returning to his desk. He is clearly upset at the manner in which events have unfolded. However, he is the Constable's lieutenant, and as such has little choice but to comply with the wishes of his superior.

OOC: Enoch will not be joining you in the dungeon. The door leading down resembles those old style cellar doors that lead into old school basements from the outside (except this one is inside).

While fiddling with the door and sneering at Lazaret, Enoch provids a better than average chance for Thorfire to sneak downstairs undetected.

Thorfire, if you'd like to enter the dungeon unseen, make a stealth roll with advantage (DC 10).

Re: Chapter 2: The Constable's Office

In reply to DM (msg # 25):

I would expect no less as it is your station. Someone is always needed to guard and to watch.

At sea it was my duty to watch. As one skilled at climbing and with keen eyes it was I who was tasked with climbing up the main mast and looking for ships or signs of land. It was a job that I gladly accepted as it let me see the world and all the shiny things it has to offer.

One particularly calm, sunny day I was atop the main mast, just pacing from one end of the sail to the other when I spotted a peculiar object floating off the starboard bow. I don't think any of my fellow sailors would have spotted it. I alerted the captain and he had the ship turn slightly. A rope was lowered and I climbed down to retrieve the object. It was a lump of ambergris the size of a small child. Well I don't have to tell you the value of such an object and I certainly didn't have to tell the captain either!

I used to have a small chunk of that thing in my bag here, now where is the damned thing...

Lazaret takes a little time to search through his bag for a piece of ambergris that he long ago lost interest in and traded for some other bauble.

Why thank you, Lazaret.

He is the first to follow Sister Gwendelon donwn into the dungeon,

Now tell me good sister, what do you know about the hooded fellow that this unfortunate young man unfortunately ran into? Has he caused other trouble?

Re: Chapter 2: The Constable's Office

Led by Sister Gwendelon, the party descends into the torch lit dungeon. Thorfire, still unseen by Enoch or Gwendelon, nearly blows his cover when he kicks a loose rock across the floor. Luckily for the halfling, Enoch is staring venomously at Lazaret and doesn't notice a thing when the stone skids against a nearby wall. By the time the tabaxi has completed his unsuccessful search for an old treasure in his pack, the rest of the team is downstairs and Lazaret scampers off to join them.

At the bottom of the stairs, the passage turns right. Across a narrow corridor, in the thick stone wall, a door of iron bars is set. Beyond this barred door sits a boy, about 16 years old by the looks of him. He sits on a narrow wooden bench with his knees pulled up under his chin.

The corridor runs parallel to the stairs past two additional cells.
A 4th cell is located beyond the stairs on the other side of the corridor.

OOC: See "Map/Image for group 1" under the Game Map link if you want to see a full layout of the dungeon (it's not much).
