ooc After the cat is put to sleep I wish to assist Elden with examining the cat. he can examine the wounds and do a medicine or healing spell. While he examines I wish to assist by seeing if the marks match the cranium rats, if they are consistent with animals like that normally attacking a cat in such a manner, and if there any common results from these types of attacks. Basically trying to assist a medicine check with a nature check and noting things for the investigation.

I wish to speak with the person that was first on the seen. Then I want to see the full extent of the damage and see the list of what has been taken. Don't worry I am very good at keeping my mouth shut up about things I have seen.

ooc Varun wants to talk to all the witnesses and go to into all rooms of the business. Even if there was no visible damage I want to see if I can see an if exit or anything else  that was missed due to not searching for rats and assuming it was human theft.

I'm sorry. I have been completely swamped both at work and in my free time since last week. I even tried to check the game Saturday, but only got to read a post or two before rushing off to an appointment.

Anyway, I was thinking of trying to use Calm Emotions to coax the cat out without putting it to sleep, but the text says that spell only works on humanoids. I have high animal handling, but if Varun's 16 won't bring it out in less than a half-hour, I don't see much point in rolling again. I will go along with the plan to heal it if someone else can cast a sleep spell on it.

After some coaxing and spell-use, the cat is examined and healed. Fat Chance was bleeding from over a dozen wounds, and would've died if left untreated. The cat's wounds are consistent with the claws and teeth of rats.

Initial discussions with Ayre (who was the first one to notice the break-in) and other employees reveal they are all puzzled. The shop is guarded by around-the-clock security, and there are no signs of forced entry. "Yesterday was an unusually slow day," Ayre says. "No sales, although those girls from the temple were ogling engagement rings with that boyfriend of theirs." The shop doors are locked after closing and only Ayre holds the keys.

Underneath the cabinet along with the cat are the corpses of several rats. Each dead rat has slashing and puncture wounds consistent with a cat’s attacks, but also a damaged skull, revealing their brains, which glow with a slight purple phosphorescence consistent with cranium rats. A rat hole in the wall near the cabinet shows how the animals got in.

ooc When we get a copy of what was taken I would like to see if there is something that the loot might be used for aka spell components or something like that.

I say we move on to the next site of vandalism to see if we can see a pattern emerging.

"Maybe we should recruit the cat, he seems to have done his fair share of fighting the forces of this mind flayer as well."

Turning to Ayre, "That is one boyfriend with multiple girlfriends?"

While this is going on, I am going to start to cast Detect Magic to get a different perspective of the area.

Also want to roll Arcana or any other applicable skill to see if those gems have any value as spell or ritual components, and ask my comrades to do the same.

Ayre says two young female acolytes from the Moonwater come in often over the past month, accompanied by a human youth with an eyepatch, who usually wears black. She thinks he is romantically involved with one of them, but she finds it hard to say which. They never buy anything, but out of respect for Andorran Bree and the temple, Ayre never turns them away.

OOC: I just need someone to roll an Arcana check to determine if the gems are useful in spellcasting.

Fival detects that though the place is well-protected physically, magically its defenses are a joke. It has no wards, and a token attempt to sow gorgon's blood into the walls was inconsistent enough to not interfere with teleportation at all. Still, there are no signs magic was used to break in. The only dweomers Fival notices are psionic energies from the corpses of the cranium rats.

Salia, assisted by Fival, soon determines that uncut gems are useful in several higher level spells, primarily abjuration spells or spells with permanent effects, especially in terms of infusing the dead with life. Spells they believe would include such components include chromatic orb, continual flame, glyph of warding, nondetection, revivify, stoneskin, awaken, greater restoration, planar binding, raise dead, and more of higher levels.

Once Fat Chance has been tended to, Sälia holds the cat tenderly, petting it and considers the facts before stating very clearly to Ayre:

” I would invest in some additional security measures of the mystical variety.  Wards and such, enchanted items that could protect your establishment, might be pricy, but the advertisement that you have closed your business to further increase your security could go a long way to reassuring your clientele. Turn this situation to your advantage and you could be providing a superior service for more profit.”

He lays the cat somewhere comfortable.

”Should the eye patch and arm candy wander in here again, please feel free to tell them a Tiefling by the name of Sälia had mentioned someone of their appearance while shopping for a particular Gem. I would greatly appreciate it and it would go a long way to helping us.”

Ayre agrees.

FIVAL: Do you say or do anything in response to Ayre's emotional reaction to your particular presence?

EVERYONE: When you say the "next" location, where do you mean?

Looking at the game map, it looks like the Chiang Emporium would be the next place to go on our list of vandalism sites. It's just north of where we are now.

I'll pull Ayre aside. "These are trying times my dear, no need for apologies. You were only trying to do right by your father, there is nothing wrong with being over protective. When this is finished I hope to catch up, I so miss home, and I love being reminded of it. Stay safe, we shall return soon."
