OOC - Game Planning
With the focus on storytelling - and how FATE seems to work well with collaboration - I'm encouraging that we collectively we set the tone for the campaign, the bits of the setting and themes it explores and how the characters will work together. You can read how the FATE system intends this to work here: https://fate-srd.com/fate-core/game-creation

We have the basic concept for the story: the frontier of the Kuru Vuoristö Mountains, with settlers forced between too many impossible challenges to defend themselves and the mercenaries of the Blackwatch seeking a contract and possibly a home. Do the players want to focus on survival or conflict? Do they want to explore frontier life in a small settlement or be making the decisions that effect the region and the people? Are they newcomers or do they have roots in the territory?

Before we begin character creation we need to flesh out the following:
  • What is the Nature of the Party? Are you strangers thrown together by fate, or do you have prior history? Are you the beleagured defenders, those waiting behind them for the next attack or those hired to come to their aid? Are you a farming family herding alpaca, or a mining crew working the mountains? Do you work for the same corporation?
  • What is the Campaign Scale? Do you want to establish Eastmount or keep the wolf from the door? Do you want to dig into the underlying canon about the Seihai or establish a more fleshed out flavour for the Federation?
  • What are the Setting's Big Issues? Clearly there's a number of things in play on Comorian at this time: the final days of the Focht Epidemic, the collapse of the Mercantile Alliance and the unrelenting push towards modernisation and the stars from the Council. What is forcing the existing regional polity to consider hiring a renowned Exodus mercenary troop?
  • Where, what and who and the Key Locations, Groups and People? We know something about the physical geography of the region and the brush strokes of what will happen, but who are the unnamed existing territorial polity who bring the Blackwatch in eventually? Is Eastmount built on the bones of a prior settlement? Who is making the decisions?
  • Do we want to tweak the core rules are the Default Skills or introduce any Extras? I'm probably renaming Crafts to Mechanics and Lore to Education, but otherwise I'm not planning to make significant changes unless someone makes a case for it. Depending on where we get to with the other questions, we may end up using Extras

We will move on to character creation once we have these facets of the setting sorted out

So the only backstory I'm set on is that I'm going to play a former Crimeran pilot who is no longer flying for the Confederacy, probably due to a past mistake. The setting seems to indicate a connection to the blackwatch so Rusty is either a member or an asset for the group.

I would imagine my role would be the driver/pilot along with some combat prowess, some survival and some charisma so I would like some sort of travel involved in the campaign, even if it's just driving to town and back.

As for my opinions, I am flexible on the scope of the campaign and I would prefer to defer to blackwatch one as he would have the most knowledge and interest in the setting and plot. If no one has any strong feelings I can put some stronger opinions to the matter.

Our setting could see the characters part of Blackwatch or those who eventually need Blackwatch on their lands, either would work.

You've mentioned you're keen for some degree of travel, which is cool. Do you have any thoughts on whether that's because the party has no fixed abode (i.e. nomads, seasonal workers, soldiers) or because there's something about their base of operations that requires them to move between it and one or more other fixed locations (i.e. trappers or loggers, needing supplies from town, reliant on crucial equipment that needs parts or repairs)?

If its a mixed group of civilians and military I would imagine it would be because of base of operations of some flavor and harsh terrain.

When I think of settlers I imagine a homestead or a hamlet far from a trade post or thoroughfare with few roads or no roads at all between their hamlet and the nearest point of contact.

Nomads in the mountains doesn't seem to fit the bill, exposure is a big issue and making shelter tends to require staying put. Unless the shelter moves...that could work.

If it was strictly military party, I would like it to be either they would be a mechanized reconnaissance squad or perhaps airborne simply to make it easier to keep the party together.

If it was a solo-campaign I'd be more interested in a Crimeran outcast piloting one of the few aircraft in the region and his adventures as the area goes from settlers to blackwatch and whatever strife caused the blackwatch to come in in the first place. His role could go from freight to evac to combat over the course of the campaign.

If it were nomads I was thinking prospectors, surveyors, that kind of angle. Semi-nomadic rather than "murder hobos"

We've our second player, who is a Recon Leader from the Blackwatch itself... so:

Do the players know each other before the campaign begins? From the backgrounds I'm presuming Rusty is a contractor for hire that the Blackwatch has engaged, but it could happen at the beginning of the campaign - with their meeting being the kickoff

Why have they hired him? Why are they here? I'm intrigued with the idea of keeping the story episodic with them flying between the towns and settlements - perhaps before the main Blackwatch force arrives? Gaius may be checking out the region whilst negotiations are in play or the main force completes their existing contractual obligations

Well, I believe in fate there is an intertwining of characters to make the characters function as a party and to flesh out your aspects.

Perhaps Gaius was the one who pulled rusty out of a djinn ejector seat and introduced him to the blackwatch, now a few years later they're coming back together as part of a recon force.

Aye, it has and I intend to tackle that when we come to character creation. I realise my question was badly phrased, but what I was trying to ask was: why are the Blackwatch hiring outside help? Do we see the team as forerunners to the main force, or a part of it?

Ah, Blackwatch is always willing to take on those that are willing to do their jobs, and adapt to the cultural norms that Blackwatch holds, those with military experience generally have an easier time of it, partially because they are cut more slack due to their training and disposition (in general).

This recon wouldn't be a main force, they are the forerunners, working to prepare things for the main force to engage any threats, or engaging them on their own if capable. They also set up supply caches, and establish relations with the locals.

Ok, I can work with forerunners. What kind of threat is Blackwatch being pulled into combat? Which of the issues I mention above are the ones you want to tackle? Do you want to be close to the action and the detail or more skimming over it and handling the big brush strokes?

I think being in the thick of things regularly  is perfect for this premise. Having bullet holes and damage to repair to an aircraft would keep me entertained during mission downtimes

Blackwatch came into contact with several of the peoples in the area that made up the former Republic of Albion. They began a massive campaign to rebuild the nation and clear it of all the dangerous elements. They have to crack down on the various militant factions in the area, the bandits that the militant factions are allowing to run around as they please, and Silver Republic Militia that are attempting to take advantage of the chaos. They need to also modernize the infrastructure and communications, especially between the nation and the Buna.

The Main Forces hasn't stepped into the area, as they are completing contracts with the Nezem States, as well as independent factions outside of Federation Control. The Recon Forces are to lay the groundwork, scout the area and generally make things smoother for when Blackwatch Main Forces arrive.

If you need more/something else let me know.

Going to probably make it splinter settlers from the Silver Republics (and their militia) as the territory is some way distant

Going to roll things together, but this is what we have thus far:

Episodic, firefight to firefight, in the thick of things. Our team is the recon force for the Blackwatch, led by M. Gaius Cassius with the previous head of the Wraith Guard, Roth Dandris, and a Crimeran ex-flyer.

We will be in the Kuro Vuoristö mountains and the Vuoristö Savannah, currently a mix of homesteads, mining claims and small lawless settlements under the vague guidance of the Albion Republic. We will probably have some kind of Albion handler and a liaison back to the main force, assessing the extent of problems with bandits, private militias and so on

Give me a day or so to think about Aspects, but I will probably have the Recon Force and your aircraft both as Extras

Right, I've mixed up the Current Aspects thread with some more information on the setting together with the Kukri Squad commanded by Gaius and a skeleton of Rusty's cargo plane. Give me a shot if any of it doesn't make sense
