OOC - Game Planning
With the focus on storytelling - and how FATE seems to work well with collaboration - I'm encouraging that we collectively we set the tone for the campaign, the bits of the setting and themes it explores and how the characters will work together. You can read how the FATE system intends this to work here: https://fate-srd.com/fate-core/game-creation

We have the basic concept for the story: the initial settlement of Comorian at the end of the Exodus road. Do you want to begin on entering the Sabaki system, as the orbital battle begins or in the aftermath? Are you decision makers or order-takers? Are you aboard one of the vessels who make planetfall or from the escape pods of one of those destroyed in orbit and forced to survive until someone can make it to you?

Before we begin character creation we need to flesh out the following:
  • What is the Nature of the Party? Are you strangers thrown together by fate, or do you have prior history? Did you enter coldsleep together with a plan in mind or where you thrown together in the chaos of the initial landings? Are you all from the same ship even? Which one or ones?
  • What is the Campaign Scale? Are you setting the foundations for a nation or establishing a homestead or mining pit?
  • What are the Setting's Big Issues? Do you want to be dealing with the escalating tensions between the settlements, the strangeness of a new world or wrack and ruin left by the orbital battle?
  • Where, what and who and the Key Locations, Groups and People? We know something about the physical geography of the region and the brush strokes of what will happen, but where and who are the colonists we want to focus on? Stalwart Nejem loyalists or those we have picked up on the Exodus road?
  • Do we want to tweak the core rules are the Default Skills or introduce any Extras? I'm probably renaming Crafts to Mechanics and Lore to Education, but otherwise I'm not planning to make significant changes unless someone makes a case for it. Depending on where we get to with the other questions, we may end up using Extras

We will move on to character creation once we have these facets of the setting sorted out

I really like the idea of a prologue that is the battle and then we take control right about as the enemy ships retreat. We get to make some decisions such as what ships to try and land, gettison escape pods, etc which will have an impact on our post-landing life.

Aye, even if you're not influencing the final disposition (since we know which ones make planetfall) then there's some interesting reveals and world-building in where the smallcraft end up, how the characters know each other and so on

I think this one would be pretty hard to solo-campaign unless my character was put in charge of a ship or some other position of responsibility.

I would imagine Felicity would be out of cryo sleep fairly often to check on/tend to the seeds and crops. Depending on if other players join, the party could be the skeleton crew of the ship that awakens periodically.

As for the scale, I like the idea of starting a nation and have this one be a grander scale than the other two. There's just so many macro issues to deal with when you're crash-colonizing that it would be almost like a mini-comorian-scale game in itself.

We can certainly go grander in scale, but it will still be a character based campaign rather than a polity one!

We have a second player now, a shipboard security chief. What do you think of beginning aboard the RCV Kari, a colony sleeper whose coldsleepers went on to form the Hishu and Rafiki? Clearly there was some mini-exodus at some point, and an interesting one with those woken eventually colonising two quite distant parts of Comorian

I'm down for that. We're the Hishu pacifists before or after planetfall?

You're the crew of the vessel that has the people who will become the Hishu Gardeners or the Rafiki Brotherhood eventually. Doesn't mean you're pacificsts or they are, but that's where they end up and part of the story will be exploring how that happens and what causes the rift that makes them go their separate ways

Ah ok, so Hishu and Rafiki came to being after planetfall and our actions may or may not influence them to initially be pacifists when they do form which would be neat if that worked out in a terrible way.

I'm totally fine with the Kari.

Aye, though clearly there will be bits of the culture that are identifiable in those aboard :)

From the Department of Offworld Affairs in the core campaign, for reference:

Financed by the Mbum family:
  • RCV Kari*, a Colony Sleeper that held those who founded the Hishu and Rafiki and was cannibalised for early settlements

And I'm fine with that as well, seems that it has an interesting story in there somewhere ;).

Ok, so we're settled on being part of the command crew aboard the RCV Kari. Excellent :)

From the earlier comments we want this to be a bit more epic than the other spin-offs, setting the tone of the colonisation rather than worrying about the mundanity of establishing a homestead

Did either of you have a steer on the kind of issues and problems most interest you? Politics, rebellion and strife, the strangeness of the world or problems caused by the orbital conflict? I have a few things up my sleeve but we can tone them down or ratchet them up according to the more interesting bits

In reply to Narrator (msg # 12):

What if we turn the mini-Comorian game on its head and have the players submit Turn Reports in response to "budgets" that are designed by Narrator as a result of our roleplay? Fewer numbers to work with, like maybe just a verbal description of the funding level, and the roll results.

Once we land, we each get put in charge of a colonization task in the territory that either becomes Hishu or Rafiki. We steer towards a schism as players, while our characters struggle with the monolithic task of establishing the colony.

Let me have a think on that - though my gut reaction is I'm inclined to run these spin-offs are more traditional storytelling rpgs there may be something interesting in me being more like the player

In reply to Narrator (msg # 14):

The idea came up originally as making this something of an epistolary game, with us writing reports to our higher ups, as well as roleplaying, since we want something larger-scale.

Is this an angle you would want to explore, Felicity or Tiko? I'm keen that it's roleplay but we could include those kind of reports as a means to move the gameplay through downtime between the action

So we are trying to establish a colony in our day to day and once a year we are given a special task to accomplish before the year is out?

Broadly, though I was thinking more intense episodes of action (politics, conflict, challenges to overcome) and then a break of a few weeks or a month which we move forward based on a report from each of you about the bigger changes to the colony based on some brush strokes from me. As Natsu suggested, I provide a micro-budget (max three items each) and you provide something more like a report on progress
