"True enough." the redhead laughed.  "You may call me Annabelle. May I ask you a rather personal question?

Annabelle nodded as Marcus and Silas approached, an eyebrow raised in amusement.  Annabelle was often mercurial in her moods, playful, but also insistent. And there was something about her today that suggested she was in one of those moods.

OOC: Oh.  Okay. I guess she's Annabelle.  She's starting to take a life of her own, I think...

"Careful Luke, look mighty closely and think hard before you open that door..." The Marshal offers calmly, doffing his hat now to The Lady. "Ma'am, nice to see you out and about." It's a genuinely warm greeting, and true sentiment. He'd been an encouraging voice for her to remain at least familiar with the outside world and modern times/innovations.

He wouldn't spoil her fun unasked, but he wouldn't leave his partner completely out in the cold either. Seemed like a fair warning for ANY woman really, hopefully Luke had been paying attention at those workshops he'd been attending with all of the other rookies and paraneters.

"Careful. The Sahara is technically in the tropics and you'll need more than a little suncream if you are sent there."

Returning the lady's nod with a lower and almost unconscious bow of his head Marcus flickered a grin to Luke and the woman he was with before glancing back to Annabelle. He was in no rush to interrupt her conversation and content to simply stand attendance upon the chat until he knew where it was going. For one thing he was still not sure what the tone of this was to be.

"Mr Marshal." Annabelle said with a rather neutral expression.  Her eyes were vibrant green matching her dress.

She turned back to Luke.  "Your cautious companion fears that in allowing me to ask a personal question you might unwittingly surrender a part of yourself.  But the question stands.  Small talk is just that--small.

Re: 01.01: The Golf Club at Newcastle (Luke & Nicole)
Hunter's Moon wrapped up a lively little shanty song, then the lead singer took to the mic.

"adies and Gentlemen, we are Hunter's Moon!.  The band is going to take a little bit of a break, but I'm too revved up to go quiet.  So, if you don't mind, I'm going to do something I haven't done in just ages...

She stepped away from the microphone and stepped over to the keyboard, then picked up one of the stringed instruments.  It was squat stubby and done in a glistening cherry.  "This is an Irish bouzouki.  Her name is Bebe.  And today, I'm just going to play.  I have absolutely no idea what...  When the music calls, you play.  So, if the spirit moves you, dance! I'm just here to have fun!

And Rachel Kane lifted the bouzouki and started playing...

It was a low sound first, a gentle rain on a distant land, soft summer winds swirling in the pre-dawn before a tempest.  She was a girl, overlooking the ocean the distant line of sky giving rise to hope of light.  Then the waves crashed and the distant sounds of thunder brought strong foreboding.

A melody came from the scene, a love song of distant yearning, or a lover gone to sea.  And there, on the distant, framed by the false dawn, the small black on the horizon that said he was coming home!  Kane brought the melody out, ramped up the sound into the sheer exultant joy of homecoming, the promise of her love returned.

Though the band had taken a break, Kane tapped her feet, and somewhere, the sound of a flute played counterpoint to her melody, giving a lover's touch...

Annabelle's attention was momentarily drawn with rap admiration to the woman on stage...  Her eyes lit up, and Annabelle gasped, her expression breaking out into a smile that threatened to dazzle the room.

The Marshal shrugs, allowing her interpretation to stand uncontested. Close enough for government work. The distraction offered by the band's frontwoman doesn't go unnoticed, though it's hardly as impacting on him as it is The Lady. He certainly liked it much more than what was typically recognized as good music in the modern times, but it was also.... a bit old-world for him. Pretty, but not his thing.

The flute perks his attention though. Where was that coming from...?

Luke squints slightly, trying to see the trap before he steps into it, then he shrugs. "Feel free to ask, Annabelle. This is a party; I'll probably even answer." He smiles to show it's mostly banter.

Re: 01.01: The Golf Club at Newcastle (Luke & Nicole)
Nodding appreciatively along with the music Marcus for a moment wished he had brought his own instrument with him. An event like this was far grander than the streets he played on but the artist's skillful expression of music was one that made him itch to play too, his own hands half reflexively clenching as though playing for a moment. Whether the underlying flute was someone who felt the same or the band backstage he did not know but he certainly appreciated it.

Noting the admiring look on his associate's face he shifted for a moment to be slightly closer. While he doubted she was going to be so enraptured she did anything foolish Marcus had no desire to see Annabelle's feelings run away with her especially in somewhere this crowded.

Re: 01.01: The Golf Club at Newcastle (Luke & Nicole)
"We are not unalike, you and I.  Annabelle looked at Nicole, smiled and let her head fall to one side, eyes closed for a long moment as the lady on stage played her strange melody.

She turned back to Luke, opened her eyes slowly, sleepily, almost as if she were in a trance.  "We tell ourselves that we are happy; we play the parts of mild-mannered butchers, bakers, botanists; We convince our families that we chose this life, that we are content.  But we know, all the while, that we fight the appetite that move us, stirs us, pushes us to pronouncements of passions so great and terrible, that mere words cannot encompass them, cannot define them, cannot describe us.

Annabelle closed her eyes again, just as The musician's tune came to a brief stop.  A silence seemed to gather, marked only by the musicisn'a steady beat of her boot on stage... Three measured taps, before she started to play again.  What is it, then, that truly makes you happy?

Re: 01.01: The Golf Club at Newcastle (Luke & Nicole)
Luke glances at Nicole, who is frowning at the publicly-stated descriptions. He smiles, gently, then turns back to Annabelle.

"Same two things that make anyone happy: serotonin and dopamine. Chemicals our brain creates in response to certain physical sensations; the right foods, the right music, good sex, hell, even imaginary sensations from movies or books can trick our brains into making the right chemicals. Happiness is fun, but you don't want to get addicted to it. Eat delicious steak three times a day, and it will stop working for you, and you have to do something more to catch the next high."

He shrugs, "But for me, now, peppercorn steak, rockabilly music, and..." Luke pauses, taking the question seriously and trying to think of a true answer, "the love of my loved ones. Now I have a question for you. How do you earn your own respect?"

Annabelle grins, openly, raises an eyebrow and nods at Luke's measured response.

"I need not earn my own respect. "  she said without missing a beat.  " Strip the facade away and I remain what I am.  The blade of grass knows no respect, only the dedication and persistence of being.  So it is with me.   I respect those who neither falter nor surrender once committed. "

Luke's eyebrows raise in surprise. "Oh? For me, I have to be who I choose, to earn my own respect. Though the self I build is made up of the raw material of who I am."

Luke grins. "I gain and lose my respect, as I do my patience, wealth, and weight. If it was easy, it wouldn't be worth respect."

After a moment, he thinks of another question of his own. "Are you happy?"

When the conversation takes unexpected turn, and very much was the small talk she'd declared, The Marshal disengages from it-- attention moving back to the performer, then panning the room slowly. He still had an itch, that instinctive feeling that something was on the cusp of happening.

Laughing lightly at Luke's last question Marcus' face was frozen into polite innocence as soon as anyone looked at him though a faint tremble of his lips suggested he still found it funny. That same relaxed manner faded at the Marshal's expression and unconsciously he moved to place himself at Annabelle's back, lightly nudging the serious-faced cowboy. "You well there friend?"

As Marcus and Silas spoke, a short man in a grey suit approaches.  He was fastidiously dressed, with lavender pinstripes perfectly matching his shirt and handkerchief. He had blonde hair slicked back off his face, and a silver earring in both ears.  He had a tiny silver pin of a stylized zero (circle with a slash from lower left to upper right) on his lapel.

He coughed once, politely, to get their attention then stepped forward.  "Sirs.  I am sorry to intrude but there is an issue that may require your attention."  he offered a stiff bow.  "There has been an... ah... incident on the course."  he glanced over at Annabelle, and  bit his lower-lip.

He is obviously glamoured.  You can roll to see through the glamour by Overcoming Intellect(+1), should you wish to do so.

The Marshal scowls, rolls his head so that he can look at Marcus and Annabelle. "Yours?" He asks simply, implying constituency not whose attention was required... He returns his attention to the glamoured man. "Guessin' you know exactly who it is you're addressing right now Jeebs? Hop to it then." He pushes off the bar, adjusts his hat, and makes ready to follow the mans lead towards the course.

Nicole smiled, but the facade of cheerfulness was pretty obvious as she pulled Luke away.

Well that got all kinds of personal real quick. she remarked.  Who is she?

Luke raises a shoulder in a half-shrug, as Nicole pulls him out of earshot of Annabelle. "Silas seemed to know her. I'll have to ask him, later. Could be one of the Good Neighbours. Could be high on something illegal. Could be both. Last person who talked to me like that was trying to recruit me to sell Amway products."

He sucks on his bottom lip for a moment. "But it sure sounded like she was bragging about being a monster to see how I'd react. Or did you get something else out of that conversation?"

"She was talking like she knew us." Nicole said.  "A little too familiar.  There's a lot of loneliness there.   She's on the hunt.  I kinda feel sorry for whoever she hooks up with tonight.

Nicole glanced at her watch, then looked up.  "Jerome and Abigail have left.  You mind if we follow suit?   I wouldn't mind stopping by Pasqualies for some ice-cream,
 though..."

Luke looks around and realizes Nicole's right. The newly-wedded couple had slipped off. He takes Nicole's arm.

"Works for me. Assuming they're still open."
