01.04:  Back Home... (Luke, Nicole)

The ice cream was good.  The summer evening had cooled off substantially, and a wind had picked up.  Although there was a state-wide fire-warning in effect, the smell of burning cedar was fresh on the air.  Most likely, it was a result of the reservation right next door to the trailer-park.  Certainly no fires or fire-trucks were easily visible.

But there was, however, a couple of police cruisers pulled up in front of Luke & Nicole's home.  A small gathering of the local park were gathered together, talking with two officers.  Beyond them, the front door to their place had been torn off it's hinges and was, in fact, nowhere to be seen.  The big sheet of glass on the front end had had something thrown through it, causing a star-pattern of cracks around the fairly large hole.

Another officer stepped into door way from within, holding a cel-phone to his ear, just as Luke's cel-phone began to ring...

01.04:  Back Home... (Luke, Nicole)
Luke's stomach churned. It was never fun to have your home invaded. He knew, intellectually, that a mobile home didn't have much of a threshold. He didn't have much in the way of wards, let alone a security system. What he had was his reputation and a bunch of nosey neighbours. But, emotionally, he'd allowed himself to think of his home as a safe place, and that illusion was now torn away.

His left arm went around Nicole, ready to comfort her or hold her back from losing her temper and attacking someone- whichever way she decided to respond.

With his right hand, Luke pulled out his cell phone, glanced at the display to see who was calling, then answered. "Hello?"

"Hello.  This is Officer DeWitt with the Seattle Police Department.  I'm looking for Luke Biachi."  Luke could see the officer's lips move as the voice came over his telephone.

Once Luke identified himself, Officer DeWitt continued "Sir, there appears to have been a break-in at your house.  Is there any chance you could return home?

"I'm about ten feet away from you, Officer DeWitt."

Luke waves when the officer looks around, then hangs up and pockets his phone.

"What happened, here?"

The officer cocked his head to one side, then shrugged.  "Sir, A couple of your neighbors reported a disturbance about half an hour ago.  Said you weren't normally given to destructive tendencies.    Would you mind coming inside.  I'd like to get your assessment of the damage.  Maybe you can tell if anything is missing.

DeWitt stood at the door while Luke and Nicole took a step inside.   The inside was a mess.  The television was destroyed, the shelves--every single one of them--had been upended.  Cupboards had been emptied, drawer-contents scattered from one end to the other.   It would take weeks to get a semblance of balance again.

"One of your neighbors said you were attending a wedding. DeWitt said.  "Were many people aware of your itinerary?

The place had been professionally tossed.  It looked as if somebody had been looking for something.  And Luke could think of a few things in their home that somebody might go searching for... if they'd known it was there n the first place.

Open call...  What might he have hidden in the home?  As a SHARPSHOOTING BOOGEYMAN, might he have a stash of weapons and/or ammunition?

Yes, and moreover specialized ammo, like silver and iron bullets, and crossbows with sharpened wooden arrows. Probably even some potions. Are they all missing, or lying about to cause conflict with the police?

Luke figured a few things might be missing, but was not expecting this kind of carnage in his home. His fists and jaws clench as he assesses the damage, and looks for traps which an enemy might have left behind.

"It looks more like they wanted to break everything than steal anything. But that's just a first impression. Don't hold me to it."

Actually, it's up to you.  We can compel the high-concept if you're willing to have stuff exposed...  It would complicate things somewhat... though it isn't necessarily illegal to have weapons and ammunition if it's properly licensed...  still, police interest.  Will you take the fate-point for it?

It truly looked as if whoever had done this was intent on maximizing the damage and disarray.  Nothing appeared to be taken--though it was still difficult to tell.  And there didn't appear to be any specific traps set for the unwary.

DeWitt's eyes roved over the entire place, walls, furniture, the mess across the floor.
"So, you were on your way home when I arrived." Officer DeWitt said, pulling out his notebook.  "Where were you this evening?

"We left here about four PM."  Nicole said, her face tight, her mouth a thin, severe line.  "Ceremony and reception at The Gold Course at Newcastle.

"I mean, this looks rather personal.  DeWitt said.  "And if you have any concern that this might not be an isolated incident...  he let his voice trail off.

I'll take the Fate point. Let's have nothing illegal, but a few things that are odd. A gun cabinet, knocked over in the bedroom (you decide if the intruders broke into it; it will have a number of pistols and rifles inside. Let's say there's also a crossbow, broken from the ransacking, sitting on the couch, and a scattering of silver bullets on the kitchen floor."

Luke takes a deep breath in, and lets it out slowly. "No. No one's done anything like this to me before. What makes it look personal, and not just a junkie looking for valuables? Did they leave some sort of message?"

Re: 01.04:  Back Home... (Luke, Nicole)
At the moment, I'm going to call it a set-up.  Calling it PERSON OF INTEREST makes it sound ominous but it really just means that Luke (and Nicole) are on DeWitt's radar, so to speak.

DeWitt glanced around slowly.  "The  clutter is too erratic.  it looks like someone was going for maximum disruption.  Most of the things thrown around don't appear to actually be broken.  Living in a house like this, most people searching wouldn't have bothered to pull photographs off the wall.    There appears to be some valuable items here that could have been pawned off easily--and discretely enough.  But they left it."
DeWitt shrugged.  "Of course, I could be wrong.  Opinion isn't really relevant in this kind of thing.  Do you have house or tenant insurance?

DeWitt stepped into the hallway, affording him a look into the master bedroom.  "our Gun Safe appears to be unharmed."  You are licensed, of course?

Luke nods. "Yeah. I do." His brow furrows, and he looks around with an air of confusion. "So, not trying to rob for the sake of robbing. Not looking for anything in particular. Just messing with us?

Do you know any door repair companies that are open this late?"

DeWitt offered a small smile.  Yeah, I know a guy.  It'll just be plywood-boarding for tonight, but it'll get you through the night.

He offered a business card.  Seattle PD, Officer DeWitt, his badge-number and a file-number for the home intrusion.  You call us if you discover anything's missing.

"Will do, Officer."

Luke takes the business card, waves as the police officers all leave, checks to make sure no one is standing close enough to the doorway to listen in, then walks over to Nicole.

"Is this aimed at me, you, or both of us, you think?"

Re: 01.04:  Back Home... (Luke, Nicole)

Side note: I didn't know whether to go forward with having a landline telephone or just the cellular.   Please let me know.

After DeWitt had left, Luke found a voicemail message from an unknown number.

"Luke, this is... Call me Hope.  Doctor Ericsson told me to call you if there was trouble.   Well. there's trouble.   Bedbeddle says someone's trying to take out Willa and everyone who was at the garden party.  Find Sebastian Strauss and Dorothy McManus.  Find out what they've got in common.   They're going to make life miserable for everyone, and try--"

It's not like either of us ever pissed anybody off. Nicole said.    You wanna check the safe?   I'm going to go talk to Fred & Daphne Codename for their stoner neighbors.  Maybe the could give us a little bit more insight.

Let's say cellular only.

Luke tosses his phone at Nicole. "Listen to this message before you head out on your own. If you wait a minute, I'll check the safe, then come with you."

Luke looks around for signs of what happened and why on his way to open the safe and look inside.
