01.05: Returning Lydia Home...  (Gordon, Mona)

Niimi had been justifiably shocked that Lydia had turned up at the Gold Course. it was a ten minute drive to a little cul de sac just off of Newport Way, near Bellevue college.  The house was a two-storey white walled structure with vines creeping up the side.  It sported new shingles on the roof and quality drapes across the front window.

01.05: Returning Lydia Home...  (Gordon, Mona)

Lydia's mother didn't look old enough to have had a daughter Lydia's age, but she certainly had the worried mother act down pat.   She came to the front door in an ancient over-sized house-coat, her hair frizzy and unkempt, big dark bags under her eyes.

She wasn't angry... just concerned, afraid even....

She opened it quickly after the initial doorbell, wrapped Lydia in a large hug that left little doubt about her concern for her daughter.

Then she looked up at them...  "Thank-you."  she whispered.

"Hey Miss McLaughlin." Niimi said, in a kind of matter-of-fact tone that totally underscored the non matter-of-fact nature of the situation.  "So, Lydia had some sort of episode.  She tried to crash a friend's wedding....  This is Mona and Gordon...

"Greetings," he says, "I hope you don't mind, but we gave her a snack while we were there.  No sugar though.  I know it is late and it has been a trying evening for you, but could we talk for a moment?"

01.05: Returning Lydia Home...  (Gordon, Mona)
After getting Lydia and Gordon together with Niimi, Mona had taken off for a little bit to get changed out of her dress. It took a bit longer than it maybe should have, but she wasn't used to wearing so many clothes, let alone anything so confining. Or delicate. Or expensive... Soon she was able to rejoin them, wearing a simple and cheap black dress with a grey hoodie, and shoes easily slipped into and out of. The makeup was still on, but it would have taken even longer to remove that. Besides, some part of her was curious what would happen to it if she changed. Clothes didn't change with her, and that stuff wasn't any different, right? Maybe she could get a whole Cheshire Cat thing going...

That could wait until later.

At Lydia's place, Mona pulled a hand out of the hoodie's kangaroo pocket to wave at the girl's (surprisingly young) mother. She was hoping to avoid doing any more talking unless she had to, not only because she felt awkward but also because it would be the best way to observe and learn.

Ms Mclaughlin glanced at Lydia and then at Niimi.    Then she nodded and led Gordon further into the little basement suite she rented.   The walls were white-washed, with photos of Lydia on the hallway.  Photos of Lydia and her mother, Lydia at school, Lydia with a bunch of other children.  There didn't seem to be any men in the photos.

"Can you tell me what happened?"  She asked.

Mona:

Once Ms Mclaughlin left the room with Gordon, Niimi stepped further into the kitchen.  "Hot chocolate." she said with finality.

Lydia actually smiled.

"But you're really going to need to change into something a little less spooky. Niimi said in a matter-of-fact tone.  And you way over did the mascara.   Go wash up. while I put the kettle on.

With Lydia out of the room, Niimi set the little black kettle on the front burner and set the element on high.  Natalie is in way over her head.  What did she say to you guys?  Was it the old woman or the old man?

In reply to Narrator (msg # 6):

"She showed up at an event with my card in her pocket," he said simply, "She was looking for help."

He was being as gentle as he could.  He did not know how much Mom could take.  He decides to leave out the supernatural for the moment.

"She was in an Altered State, not talking or acting the way Lydia would talk," he explains, "we discovered that because towards the end of the conversation she 'switched off' and then she returned looking scared and confused....like a girl would if she suddenly woke up in an office with two strangers.  We talked to her some more and then brought her home."

He smiles.

"She was actually quite resilient to the situation.  She is quite special.  That is obvious even after being with her for a few minutes," he added complimentarily.

"I would very much like to help her, and you, if I can."

Ms Mclaughlin went quiet as they entered the sitting room.  She leaned against the back of a greyish-green corduroy couch and crossed her arms as she listened.  "What do you do, then, Gordon?" she asked, evenly.  "And how, exactly, would you help my daughter?

Mona leaned against the wall beside the door frame leading to the kitchen, arms crossed, and watched Lydia leave with a little smile. Once she was gone, she let out a slow breath and looked to her friend with a shrug.

"Couldn't get that much info. The voice came with a warning that a few of us are in serious danger -- you weren't among the names -- and that we needed to find Sebastian Strauss. Also said it couldn't tell us anything identifying about itself except it was using a friend's power and identifying itself, and I quote, 'could change things.' I'm hoping that means it's a friend, and not just a parasite. Not much to go on, not much to trust on, but this little girl was used as a messenger. Need to make sure she wasn't channeling something malicious. She's really freaked out about being dangerous, poor kid."

In reply to Natalie (msg # 9):

"Well... first and foremost, I am a Clinical Psychologist with years of experience specializing in helping individuals with unusual and intense issues," he smiles, "That is what I am told it says on my website.  But it is true.  I really am an expert in this type of thing."

"In the brief time I interacted with your daughter, it became clear that she is a remarkably gifted girl who is struggling.  Struggling to find, and be, her own self even though there often seems to be a war going on inside her own head."

He continues more seriously.

"What may make me different than the other professionals you may have met is that I am willing to meet her where she is at.  I don't try to cram her into what I, or the world, think she should be...or become.  I try to help guide her through her troubles and, once she comes out the other side, to assist her to continue moving forward to the person she is trying to be."

He gets a little more intense.

"Most importantly, Ms Mclaughlin, I have never given up on a person.....ever.  Once we start, I walk with her until she doesn't need me.  I will do what ever it is that is best for her to the limits of my ability.  And if she needs more than that I will find other ways to help.  But, no matter what, I will not abandon her."

Gordon lightens his mood as he continues.

"I have been doing this a long time Ms Mclaughlin and I have experienced many strange and wonderful events and people, including others who appear similar to Lydia, and I really believe I can help.  If I didn't, I wouldn't be trying to convince you."

(ooc:  Do you want a diplomacy check or something?  Also, this may be tying into my Trouble.)

Niimi sighed.  "Someone new, then."    She extended the cup of hot-chocolate.  "I know a couple people in the haitiian community.  Someone who's not ready to be a horse is taken out of the ceremony, talked back to ground.  I've never seen someone so easily ridden.   Lydia's got no boundaries.    I spent an hour one night talking to a seventy-five year old migrant worker.  From the freaking twenties.    They've been playing mix-n-match with the medication, but I know that she's been calmer recently.  I'd kinda hoped she'd gotten it under control.  No kid needs this...

"Mister--sorry, Doctor Ericsson.  What you're offering is very kind.  But you've got to know, I can't afford you.    Maybe you want Lydia for some sort of clinical trial.  Maybe write a book about her.  We can barely afford the meds as it is.  And we don't need the publicity.  I just...

Natalie shook her head and shrugged, resigned. Even if I bought your line, I can't afford to go there. So, thanks for coming over.  I really do appreciate having my daughter back.  And you not... you know... trying to go all creepy on her.  She stopped and her face went very still.  "You didn't go all creepy on her, did you?"

If you're offering HELPING OTHERS, REGARDLESS OF THE CONSEQUENCES, I'll take you up on it.   Want to strike a deal with Natalie?  Maybe offer damned-near-free sessions?  It'll mean an obligation to Lydia, of course...  and that will play.

He raises an eyebrow.

"All...creepy?  Since I am not sure what you mean, and I do not want to guess, you can rest assured that I did not."

He chuckles.

"At what point did you get the impression that I was going to charge you?  Most psychologists do not take the State program because....well, it is a pain and it pays terrible....but I do.  For this very reason.  There are people who need me to.  And.... if Lydia has no coverage," he shrugs, "I can afford to see her a few hours a week with-out taking your hard earned money.  In fact, if I do my job right, you will need to spend less on medications too.  Save your money for college or travel or for whatever her life may take her."

Gordon does not walk away from from things like this, even if the voice that used Lydia saved his life, that's not why he would do it.  It's not in his nature.  She needs help and it is with-in his sphere to do so.  Period.

I'm offering HELPING OTHERS, REGARDLESS OF THE CONSEQUENCES.  I know for a fact that the 'free' state insurances pay mental health providers less than enough to keep the lights on.  They are also usually ridiculous with the bureaucracy.  Which is why almost no private providers accept them.  Still, Gordon is willing to do it for free or, if Natalie insists on something, working out other arrangements.

Mona took the cup with a grateful smile and just held it for a bit, relaxing as one would with hot chocolate and a friend.

"Yeah. Life's pretty rough. She's in good hands, though. Between you and the doc, she'll figure out what's happening to her, learn to control it, and be safe as she can be." After a deep breath, she took a slow sip and then glanced at the door.

"If you need any help with her, lemme know. If not, I should probably get workin' on the problem the voice gave us soon. I'd rather not drag you into that, though. Your names weren't on the 'in danger' list, and I'd rather keep it that way."

Natalie turned Gordon's card over in her hand.  After a long moment, she said.  "Tomorrow.  I'll call you tomorrow.  I'm not making this decision here and now. Not this late.  Thank-you Mister--Doctor Ericsson. She said neutrally, even coolly.  "I will let you know what I decide tomorrow."

I am not giving you the fate point at this moment.  You have to earn it.  The offer is there.  Of course Natalie will take you up on it.   When you help Lydia out, you'll get it.  You've set up a nice little potential fate-point factory....

"Of course," he says.  He knows not to push, but he does add, "Also, feel free to call if you just have any questions."

He smiles as he gets ready to go.

"Would it be alright if I said goodnight to Lydia before I leave?"

Mona grinned at Niimi over the cup, eyebrows up.

"Martyr? Hey, I didn't say I wouldn't call you if I needed you. Dunno if there's danger, dunno what it is, dunno if calling you in would make you a target if it's even real. Unnecessary risks aren't really my thing. And I'm pretty sure I can handle Googling some supernerd without your help. Sometimes I can even remember how to tie my shoes all by myself. Relax, Niimi. We've got this. ...I mean we will, once we all know about it. And yeah, if it's too much, you'll be the first to know. Just like you'll let us know if you need more help with Lydia, right?"
